Seven children, 1 adult kayaker rescued off Monterey County coast

PACIFIC GROVE — Eight people, including seven children, were rescued off of the Pacific Grove coast Sunday afternoon when they were unable to return to shore on their kayaks and paddle boards because of strong winds, the Monterey Fire Department reported.

There were no reported injuries.

The fire department received a call about kayakers in distress at 5:22 p.m. Sunday just off Ocean View Boulevard and dispatched all units to the scene. They were joined by Pacific Grove police, two U.S. Coast Guard vessels out of Monterey as well as other local agencies.

When firefighters arrived they determined that the individuals were not in distress, rather could not make headway back to shore because of wind.

The department’s fire boat motored out to the people, picked them up and brought them back to a safe location where they could make it back to shore, according to the report.

The name of the single adult was not released. It is not known what the relationship between the adult and children is.
