EVIDENCE on a crash pilot’s mental state will be probed in a secret court hearing usually reserved for spooks.

Andrew Hill, 56, was cleared of the manslaughter of 11 men in the 2015 Shoreham airshow tragedy.

But now the coroner investigating the victims’ deaths plans to examine his crucial defence claim of “cognitive impairment” at the controls.

Legal papers show East Sussex Coroner Penelope Schofield has demanded access to Hill’s cockpit GoPro footage, expert medical reports and criminal court transcripts.

The material is “protected” under EU law, meaning it can only be used for safety investigations. But Ms Schofield’s battle for the papers will be settled in the rare secret hearing, likely to be in December.

A High Court judge likened it to a closed “public interest immunity” court session — normally used by MI5 or MI6.

Ms Schofield also wants to probe the findings by two Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) reports on grounds of “potential incompleteness”.

High Court documents show she will assess if Hill’s “conscious and deliberate conduct contributed to the crash”.

The inquest will also challenge whether he “suffered a cognitive impairment which affected his flying abilities”.

If she finds Hill at fault, it could pave the way for civil lawsuits from victims’ families.

A 2017 AAIB report ruled Hill flew too low and too slow at the West Sussex airshow. He was cleared of all criminal charges in March 2019.

Schiff: January 6 committee decision on criminal contempt charges for Mark Meadows could come this week

(CNN)The House select committee investigating the January 6 insurrection will make a decision "this week" on whether it will refer Mark Meadows for criminal contempt charges for defying a subpoena before the Thanksgiving recess, California Rep. Adam Schiff, a member of the panel, said Sunday.

"I think we will probably make a decision this week on our course of conduct with that particular witness and maybe others," Schiff told CNN's Dana Bash on "State of the Union." "I can't go into ... what communications that we're having or haven't had with particular witnesses, but we are moving with alacrity with anyone who obstructs the committee, and that was certainly the case with Mr. Bannon. It will be the case with Mr. Meadows, and Mr. Clark or any others."The looming decision by the committee comes amid attempts to try to get Meadows -- the former White House chief of staff for former President Donald Trump, who defied his subpoena from the panel -- to comply with the panel's request as it seeks more information about the events at the US Capitol on January 6.
The committee has already referred criminal contempt charges for former Donald Trump ally Steve Bannon and last week issued new subpoenas to five allies of the former President, including Roger Stone and conspiracy theorist Alex Jones. Former Justice Department official Jeffrey Clark earlier this month stonewalled the House select committee, responding to a subpoena demanding he appear for an interview with the panel, but not answering questions posed to him, sources familiar with his appearance told CNN at the time.
