Max Verstappen has revealed that he has refused to take part in Netflix's upcoming series of hit show Drive to Survive because it has 'faked a few rivalries' to gain new viewers in America.

Since its debut in 2018, Drive to Survive has offered viewers behind-the-scenes footage of the Formula One season, providing interviews with drivers, team principals and other key figures throughout each campaign.

The series has proven extremely popular with viewers and has resulted in an explosion of interest in Formula One, with US broadcaster ESPN revealing that the sport's viewing figures have climbed from 547,000 people in 2018 to just shy of one million in 2021.

Despite the positive influence it has had on F1's popularity, Red Bull star Verstappen believes that the show values drama over reality and is edited and produced in a disingenuous way.

'I understand that it needs to be done to boost the popularity in America. But from my side as a driver, I don’t like being part of it. They faked a few rivalries which don't really exist,' the world championship leader said of the show ahead of this weekend's Grand Prix in Texas.

'So I decided to not be a part of it and did not give any more interviews after that because then there is nothing you can show.

'I am not really a dramatic show kind of person, I just want facts and real things to happen,' he added. 'The problem is they will always position you in a way they want, so whatever you say, they will try to make you look reckless or trying to make you… whatever fits the story of the series.

'So I never really liked that. I prefer to just have a one-on-one interview with the person who would like to know me.'

The hit show received some criticism following its portrayal of a rivalry between Carlos Sainz and Daniel Ricciardo in its second season.

'I mean the second season, there were some episodes or parts where I feel they forced it a little bit,' Ricciardo reflected on the series.

'They tried to create a bit of a rivalry between me and Sainz and it wasn’t really there. Like, he’s no more rival than anyone else. There wasn’t any personal grudge with him, but I think [Netflix] wanted something, so a lot of questions led with asking about Carlos.'

Netflix are currently filming the fourth season of Drive to Survive, with fans excited to watch all the action from a dramatic season where Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton have gone toe-to-toe for the world championship.

The Dutchman, 24, leads his Mercedes rival by six points and the pair have come to blows throughout the season, colliding at the British and Italian Grand Prix.
