Flash mob robbers hit California Home Depot; 4 suspects arrested

Four people police believe were involved in a flash mob robbery at Home Depot in the Lakewood Center Mall on Friday night have been arrested in Beverly Hills.

The Home Depot incident was one of several brazen robberies playing out around Los Angeles on Friday, including one where a security guard was punched and another where an employee was sprayed with a chemical agent.

Beverly Hills police officers received a call regarding six vehicles driving with no license plates near Beverly Drive and Dayton Way just after 9 p.m. Friday, Police Chief Dominick Rivetti said.

The officers stopped two cars and found several adults and two infants, Rivetti said. Ultimately, they detained four people who were later arrested by Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department on suspicion of their involvement in the Home Depot robbery.

How they were linked was not immediately disclosed.

Eight teenagers or young men entered the Home Depot in the 5000 block of Hardwick Street at about 7:45 p.m. and stole tools, including hammers, crowbars, wrenches, and sledgehammers, according to the Sheriff’s Department.

“We tried to stop them,” store employee Luis Romo told Fox11. “We closed the front entrance and they put their sledgehammers up and whoever got in the way, they were going to hurt them.”

The group threatened one customer, “but he got away,” Romo said.

“We are concerned these could be used in future incidents,” Los Angeles Sheriff’s Deputy Miguel Meza said. The number of items stolen was not announced but was worth a total of about $400.

Some of the robbers fled in what was described as possibly a red Mercedes-Benz with severe damage to the front.

Anyone with information about the robbery is encouraged to call the Lakewood Sheriff’s Station at 562-623-3500. Anonymous tips can be given to Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477 or submitted online at

The Lakewood incident was another in a series of so-called flash mob or smash-and-grab robberies across Los Angeles County in the past week, several of them taking place on Black Friday.

A large group of thieves entered the Bottega Veneta store at 8445 Melrose Place — near Croft Avenue and the border with West Hollywood — and stole an unknown amount of items before fleeing Friday.

According to KCAL9, a total of six smash-and-grab robberies took place Friday in the Fairfax District, Beverly Grove and Hancock Park. LAPD issued a citywide tactical alert from 8:30 p.m. Friday to 2 a.m. Saturday, spokesman Officer Mike Lopez said.

The first reported robbery took place about 4 p.m. near Melrose Avenue and Gardner Street. Three suspects took items from a store, but were arrested on suspicion of grand theft a short time later after officers pulled their vehicle over for a violation and spotted items with price tags and sensor alarms, Lopez said.

Two of the incidents took place in the 130 block of South La Brea Avenue around 5:30 p.m., Lopez said. In one incident, about 10 men ran into a store and took several items, punched a security guard and shoved an employee before fleeing, Lopez said.

In the second one, a man attempted to steal items from a store, but was confronted by an employee, Lopez said. The suspect shoved the employee down and sprayed a chemical agent before fleeing without the property.

Then, about 6:50 p.m., three men, at least one armed with a handgun, robbed a shopper of his personal property while inside a store in the 7800 block of Melrose Avenue, Lopez said. The specific items that were taken were not immediately known.

Information about a sixth robbery was not available on Saturday afternoon.

On Wednesday, robbers attacked a security guard and stole designer handbags worth an estimated $25,000 from the Nordstrom store at the Westfield Topanga mall in Canoga Park. Also Wednesday, flash mob suspects entered several stores in the 8500 block of Beverly Boulevard at the Beverly Center and grabbed merchandise without paying and ran out, the LAPD said.

Those crimes occurred two days after a smash-and-grab robbery by a mob of at least 20 people at the Nordstrom store at the Grove shopping center in the Fairfax district Monday evening. The suspects in that robbery fled the scene in at least four vehicles.

Three suspects were arrested in South Los Angeles following a chase. Officers recovered several items of clothing, at least one cash register and gloves from their vehicle.

Also Monday, at about 9:45 p.m., six suspects entered a CVS Pharmacy in the 5800 block of South Vermont Avenue in the South Los Angeles area and stole three cash registers, taking about $8,500 in cash, police said.

On Sunday, Nov. 21, storefront windows of the Louis Vuitton and Saks Fifth Avenue stores in Beverly Hills were smashed during attempted burglaries.
