How we turned Gaga into Gucci: As Lady Gaga turns her movie into a fashion show, the Oscar-winning British designer who created her dazzling outfits reveals how they made it work

Dripping in glamour and treachery and based on a true-life story, the House Of Gucci has got both film and fashion fans buzzing.
From a virginal bridal gown to sizzling skiwear, the film has its leading lady — Lady Gaga as jealous Patrizia Reggiani, who hired a hitman to kill her ex-husband, Maurizio Gucci — tripping a veritable catwalk of style across the big screen.
Ahead of today's release, Oscar-winning British costume designer Janty Yates, exclusively reveals the secrets that turned Lady Gaga into 'the Black Widow' ...
1: SHORT CUT TO STYLE
First impressions count, and the dress worn by Patrizia when she met Maurizio Gucci at a party is a belter, based on a pink dress the real-life Patrizia wore.
It was made using duchess satin and took six weeks to fit at the hands of Janty's costume cutter, Dominic Young.
Originally the gown was much longer — rising by 18 in at Ridley Scott's request.
Janty says: 'We kept five camera crews waiting that day, luckily LG [as she calls Lady Gaga] had her man with her from New York, who was the most wonderful hand sewer and had the steadiest hands of us all.

'So we stood her on an apple box and took a pair of very sharp scissors to it!'.
Patrizia Reggiani was the queen of bling, never opting for one piece of jewellery if half a dozen would do.
For much of the film, Janty made use of 20 trays of costume jewellery, but for big occasions, security guards from upmarket jewellers Bulgari or Boucheron would arrive on set with the real deal: on this occasion, diamonds and rubies from Bulgari.
2: LOGOS A GOGO
Janty and her team had access to the entire treasure trove of the Gucci archive for the film.
It was Gaga's idea to wear head-to-toe logo-bedecked Gucci for an encounter in which Patrizia discovers her maid has a fake Gucci handbag, which triggers a scene in which she goes down to New York's 42nd Street and berates the seller.

'LG felt, and I agreed, that she should be in full-on Gucci,' says Janty.
The second scene in which the star wore Gucci has her in a logo-print blouse and leather mini-skirt, on the day she is served with divorce papers while at her daughter's sports day.
3: ALTAR IMAGE
Eight to ten weeks in the making, the wedding dress with cathedral veil was Janty's favourite design, a 'labour of love', the lace all painstakingly hand-sewn.
With its sweetheart neckline, high-low hem and lace sleeves, it's not a copy of Patrizia's floor-length, high-necked gown — although Janty had a replica made.

'We didn't decide until the day,' says Janty. 'Her hair and make-up team, her manager, me and my dressers — we all just went: 'It's definitely got to be this one.'
4: DRESSED TO KILL
In this scene Patrizia is dressed to kill (although not literally) in vintage Yves Saint Laurent, rented from one of three Italian costume houses Janty deployed, along with a vintage mink coat.
The red slingbacks were designed by Janty and made in Rome, by theatrical shoemaker Pompei.
Janty says, 'I had four or five different designs, which we sent to LA and she put one pair on and said: 'God I love these shoes — have them made in every colour!'

Gaga's Patrizia wears 54 different costumes in the film, but never repeats a single item.
'She would come into a fitting; we did about ten fittings, quite apart from the Zoom fittings when we couldn't move [due to Covid restrictions].
'She'd come in, we'd discuss the scene, we'd have all our vintage there, she'd say 'I fancy that one' and then we would do every single item of jewellery, shoes, bags for that particular scene — and then she would never wear it again.'
5: LADY IN LACE
Gaga's Patrizia could have been a Joan Collins Dynasty affair, but director Sir Ridley Scott wanted a slightly more discreet look, in the style of Italian Fifties screen siren Gina Lollobrigida.

The strapless silk lace dress and jacket the star wears for a Gucci family gathering on the banks of Lake Como is an homage to an outfit Lollobrigida wore, and was made by Dominic Young.

6: ICE MAIDEN
When Lady Gaga tweeted this Alpine image, captioned 'Signore e Signora Gucci', back in March, the internet went wild.
Dressed for the slopes all in black, save for lashings of gold costume jewellery and a white chinchilla fur hat, she looked the perfect villainous wife.
Co-stars Adam Driver, as Maurizio Gucci, and Camille Cottin, the French actress who plays his lover at the time of his death, were originally meant to wear fur hats, too, before Lady Gaga declared them off-limits.

Janty says: 'Madam said: 'She's not wearing a fur hat — I'm going to have all the fur hats'.
True to character, Gaga wore the lion's share of jewellery, too.
'She [Patrizia] nearly always wore enormous earrings, a brooch, two or four bangles or bracelets, she would wear two necklaces,' says Janty.
'All the costume jewellery we got from a rental jeweller, Pikkio, in Rome — I cleaned them out!'
7: DANCING QUEEN

The vivid turquoise halterneck dress Gaga's Patrizia wears in a nightclub scene in the trailer was carefully made by Janty's team, accommodating a six-month baby bump for the character, who was pregnant with one of her two daughters at the time.
8: BLACK WIDOW
No wonder this picture of lady Gaga was used in promotional images for the movie. Her Patrizia makes funeral attire a style sensation in head-to-toe black, save for a bold, white, costume jewellery necklace with matching bracelet, and a glossy lipsticked pout.

Janty says: 'Dominic Young created three black dresses.
'LG wears them all in the film, but this one has such an interesting neckline.
'He made it out of silk and she was very happy to wear it and it just worked for this scene.'

Washington rides winning recipe into NFC playoff contention
After four consecutive losses going into the bye week, Ron Rivera recalculated how Washington could win games.
The recipe involved running the ball, controlling the clock and shortening games. The result has been a three-game winning streak to move into the final playoff position in the NFC at 5-6.
“It’s interesting because if you go back and you look at the statistics of who wins the Super Bowl and how do they win it, it all points to the yards rushing,” Rivera said. “There is a physicality and mentality to it. If you can throw the ball well and yet at the same time still be able to keep that run game going, I think if you come up against a team that all they do is rely on the passing game, you have a chance, I think, to win and win big, and the reason being so is you can grind it out.”
Rivera pointed out that Washington has been able to minimize the impact of quarterbacks Tom Brady, Cam Newton and Russell Wilson by keeping them off the field. Brady made some self-inflicted mistakes that hurt Tampa Bay, but since then Washington had a time of possession edge of 39:08-20:52 against Carolina and 41:40-18:20 against Carolina.
At 41:40, it was the franchise’s highest time of possession since 1990.
Gibson’s growth, quarterback Taylor Heinicke’s evolution as a game manager and the play of the offensive line have paved the way for this style of play. Gibson had a career-high 29 carries for 111 yards against the Seahawks, something he thought would have been “crazy” when he was a receiver at Memphis.
“(It’s) starting to look good for us: holding the ball, taking control of the game,” Gibson said.
The defense ranks fourth in the NFL since Week 10, allowing 279 yards a game. Rivera credits better communication, and using Landon Collins as a hybrid safety/linebacker has helped get playmakers Kamren Curl and Bobby McCain on the field.
“With Landon, it gives us an opportunity to take advantage of a skillset that I really appreciate,” Rivera said, comparing Collins to Shaq Thompson playing the “buffalo nickel” position with Carolina. “When you watch Landon, you watch his productivity over those last few weeks, what he’s done and how he’s impacted games, that’s pretty special.”
WHAT NEEDS HELP
Washington is on to its fourth kicker after Joey Slye pulled his left hamstring chasing down Rasheem Green on the blocked extra point attempt Monday night. The team signed Brian Johnson, who was on Chicago’s practice squad and spent time earlier this season with New Orleans.
Johnson made all eight of his field-goal attempts with the Saints, but missed three extra points and was released after four games. After releasing Dustin Hopkins and having blocked kick problems with Chris Blewitt, Rivera said Washington wanted a kicker who can get the ball in the air quickly and elevate it.
DeAndre Carter continues to be Washington’s best free agent signing, and it goes beyond his return specialties. Carter made four catches for 42 yards against the Seahawks and has developed chemistry with Heinicke.
Rookie cornerback Benjamin St-Juste has not gotten a defensive snap in either of the past two games. That’s more a credit to Kendall Fuller and Danny Johnson than a knock on the third-round pick, but he looks more like a developmental prospect than a part of the current secondary.
“We’ve just been very pleased with what we’ve gotten from the guys that are on the field right now,” Rivera said. “Benjamin’s still a young man that’s in our plans. We believe he’s got a bright future, and it’s just a matter of opportunities coming up again because it’ll happen.”
In addition to Slye’s absence, Washington could be without running back J.D. McKissic and interior offensive lineman Wes Schweitzer. McKissic was carted off in the final minutes against Seattle with an undisclosed injury, and Schweitzer’s ankle injury pressed fourth-stringer Keith Ismael into snapping duty at center.
Rookie right tackle Sam Cosmi will miss at least the next two games with a hip injury after going on injured reserve Monday. Rivera said the team did it out of necessity to open a spot for tight end Logan Thomas, who was activated off IR after missing six games with a hamstring injury.
5 — Regular-season wins with Washington for Heinicke, the same as franchise legend and Super Bowl MVP Doug Williams.
Try to prepare to visit Las Vegas on a short week, which is especially challenging given that the Raiders played on Thanksgiving and will have a big rest edge.
