LAHORE, Pakistan (AP) — A passenger train crashed into a college van carrying female students at an unmanned railway crossing in eastern Pakistan on Tuesday amid smog, killing three people and injuring seven others, police said. The accident happened in the district of Sheikhupura in the Punjab province, according to Rana Shakeel, a senior district administration official. He said the dead and injured were taken to a nearby hospital. Footage on social media showed the badly destroyed van near the railway tracks. Angered over the accident, residents briefly blocked the railway tracks, delaying some trains. Authorities said they restored the train service and officers are investigating to determine whose negligence caused the accident. Train accidents are common in Pakistan, where successive governments have paid little attention to improving the poorly maintained signal system and aging tracks. In June, an express train barreled into another train that had derailed in southern Pakistan, killing about 50 passengers and injuring more than 100 others. Copyright © 2021 The Associated Press. The D.C. Metro train that derailed near Arlington Cemetery station last week, causing commuter chaos in the process, had derailed twice previously that same day, The National Transportation Safety Board announced Monday. The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority announced Sunday evening a dramatic 60% cut to its railcar fleets, saying it would run only 40 railcars beginning Monday, in response to the accident on Oct. 12, with NTSB officials warning that the incident could have been "catastrophic" at a Monday press conference. The accident happened last week on Metro's railcar 407 with hundreds of people on board, but no serious injuries were reported. The railcar experienced a series of minor derailments and rerailments throughout Tuesday before the final incident took it out of action, NTSB said. The WMATA pulled its 7000-series railcars, made by Kawasaki Rail Car, on Sunday to investigate an issue with the cars' axles. The 7000-series cars are the newest in the fleet, but NTSB expressed concerns about how the latest models are rolling on the tracks. DC METRO PULLING 60% OF FLEET FOR BLUE LINE DERAILMENT...

FORT WORTH, Texas (CBSDFW.COM/AP) — Federal officials say a train that derailed and caught fire in Fort Worth in 2019 was traveling on tracks that had been weakened by flooding after days of rain. The National Transportation Safety Board said in an accident report released Thursday that the weakened track structure and washout from the rains, which flooded nearby Echo Lake, were the probable cause of the April 24, 2019 accident. WASHINGTON  —  Hazy sunshine illuminated the suburban landscape as Eric Forbes settled into the seat of his Friday afternoon train. It was Sept. 12, 2008, 4:22 p.m. Forbes, 56, an administrator at Cal State Northridge, was headed home to be there in time for his son’s first school dance. The curve allowed Forbes to see down the track. Motion caught his eye. “I saw this train coming at us,” he recalls. COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) — No one will be prosecuted for Denmark’s deadliest train accident in 30 years, in which a high-speed passenger train struck a semi-trailer that fell off a freight train coming in the opposite direction during a storm, police said Wednesday. Eight passengers were killed and 16 injured in the crash. The Jan. 2, 2019, accident happened because the unit wasn’t properly secured. “Neither individuals nor companies have acted in a way that would make it possible to place criminal liability,” police spokesman Martin von Buelow said. “There is nothing in the accident that indicates that the lack of locking was the result of an intentional act by someone, that is, that a person should have deliberately failed to attach the semi-trailer to the train carriage.” Police said they have now closed the criminal investigation after Denmark’s Accident Investigation Board last year concluded that strong winds were able to knock the semi-trailer off the freight train’s flatcar as it crossed the Storebaelt system of bridges and a tunnel that link the central Danish islands of...

BERLIN (AP) — Two teenage brothers were hit and killed by a train in southern Germany on Tuesday as they apparently ran across the tracks in an attempt to make their own connection, police said. Barriers were down across the tracks outside the station in Bruckberg, northeast of Munich, when the 13-year-old and 17-year-old attempted to cross to make their own train, which was already at the platform, police told the dpa news agency. An oncoming Munich-bound train tried to brake but was unable to stop in time and hit the two. Many children and others witnessed the accident from the train station and crisis teams were sent to provide counseling, police said. Copyright © 2020 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – An A train hit debris and partially derailed pulling into a station in Lower Manhattan on Sunday morning, causing a power outage across the tracks and suspending service in both directions south of 14th Street, said Interim Transit President Sarah Feinberg. As a result, there are extensive delays on the A, C, D, E and F lines in Manhattan, while northbound trains are being rerouted. It started around 8:17 a.m., when the northbound A train hit something on the roadbed as it was arriving at the 14th St.-8th Ave. station. One of its wheels left the track. Everyone on board was able to get off safely. Feinberg said the power loss left another northbound A train stuck in the tunnel near 34th Street. In her statement around 9:30 a.m., Feinberg said crews were working to get passengers off that train. Meantime, the MTA is urging riders to use the numbered lines as an alternative.
