Despite all the turmoil during the 2021 season, the Miami Dolphins find themselves in rare company with Sunday’s 20-9 win over the New York Giants. Only seven teams — one-fourth of the league — have won at least five consecutive games this season. The Arizona Cardinals and Green Bay Packers put together seven-game winning streaks earlier this year, and sit at the top of the league’s standings. The Baltimore Ravens won five in a row in September and October. The Tennessee Titans and Dallas Cowboys won six straight earlier this season. The New England Patriots are riding a six-game winning streak headed into Monday night’s game against the Buffalo Bills, and the Kansas City Chiefs could win five straight games with a win late Sunday night. Those teams are all viewed as the NFL’s best, the elites of the 2021 season, and then there’s the Dolphins (6-7), who just extended their winning streak to five games by limiting an injury-depleted Giants (4-8) roster to three field goals. It was the type of performance...

They’re willing to work hard and use their resources, and they’ve had success in the previous season. I’m hoping to build on that. Let’s play the “what if game” for one minute with the hopes that it might provide some clarity on the 2021 Miami Dolphins season, and the lessons we should be taking from it. If the resurgent Dolphins had received the calls and bounces they didn’t get during their seven-game losing streak, and it had resulted in three more wins, would our assessment of the team, coaches, front office and roster be different? If Will Fuller had gotten a pass interference call in the end zone, and Miami scored at the 1-yard line, turning an overtime loss to the Las Vegas Raiders into an overtime win, would you view this team the same? If Urban Meyer hadn’t outsmarted Miami’s entire coaching staff, putting the Jacksonville Jaguars in position to kick the game-winning field goal instead of forcing overtime, and Miami somehow managed to pull off a win, would you view these coaches more favorably? If Kyle Pitts hadn’t put on a superhero cape and delivered two big receptions in the game-winning drive that propelled the Falcons to...
The defending champions are beginning to look the part again. It wasn’t long ago that the Milwaukee Bucks were languishing under .500, but after a seven-game winning streak, they’ve moved back toward the top of the Eastern Conference standings. Milwaukee’s run has been overshadowed a bit by Phoenix’s 16-game winning streak and Golden State’s 18-2 start to the season. Now, the Bucks — and their conference finals opponents, the Atlanta Hawks — are showing signs that they’ve shaken off their early struggles. “At the start of this season, going through some trying times, I think we were all just happy it was at the beginning of the season,” guard Jrue Holiday said. “We know how this league goes, how the games go. It’s always ebbs and flows. We know that we can make a run at any time.” The Bucks haven’t lost a game when Holiday, Giannis Antetokounmpo and Khris Middleton have all played. Holiday missed about two weeks early in the season with a sprained ankle, and when he returned, Milwaukee blew a 21-point lead in a Nov. 5...

For most of the season, there was a desire here for the Ravens to get better, gather momentum and head into the playoffs to make a significant run. After watching the Ravens beat the Cleveland Browns, 16-10, on Sunday night, it’s clear they will make some progress in the final month of the season, but they likely aren’t going to get a lot better. They still might be able to make a strong run in the playoffs because, well, the NFL is a mediocre league. Will the Ravens have enough? Probably not, but let’s see. The Ravens are a team that has to win ugly. Injuries have caused a lot of problems, but there are also some that the coaching staff hasn’t figured out. So, the Ravens are going to have to fight, crawl, scratch, yell and scream for every win. They can only win ugly, which is why they have only played one strong, complete game this season, beating the Los Angeles Chargers, 34-6, on Oct. 16. But few other teams have been impressive....
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Giannis Antetokounmpo had 26 points and 13 rebounds and the Milwaukee Bucks extended their winning streak to seven, routing the Indiana Pacers 118-100 on Sunday night. The Bucks led by five at halftime and pulled away with a 39-27 third quarter. Guard Jrue Holiday scored 11 of his 23 points in the quarter. Much like the surging Bucks, who improved to 13-8, Holiday has been hot in averaging 19.7 points in the last four victories. He also had nine assists and seven rebounds against Indiana. Bobby Portis scored 15 points, Khris Middleton and Pat Connaughton each had 14, and Indianapolis native George Hill added 13 for the Bucks. Caris LeVert led the Pacers with a season-high 23 points. Malcolm Brogdon had 16. TIP-INS Bucks: Extended series winning streak against Pacers to six games … Antetokounmpo has led the team in scoring in 17 games and in rebounding in 16 games. SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) — Chris Driedger was the winning goalie when Florida’s home-ice winning streak started last season. The streak ended Saturday — and Driedger was the winning goalie again. Just seeing those guys on the other side of the ice is a bit different.” Jordan Eberle scored twice in his 800th game, Ryan Donato and Jamie Oleksiak added goals and Joonas Donskoi had two assists for the Kraken, who were facing the Panthers for the first time. SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) — Chris Driedger made 33 saves against his former team, helping the Seattle Kraken defeat Florida 4-1 on Saturday night to deny the Panthers what would have been a record-setting 12th consecutive home win to start the season. Jordan Eberle scored twice in his 800th game, Ryan Donato and Jamie Oleksiak added goals and Joonas Donskoi had two assists for the Kraken, who were facing the Panthers for the first time. Patric Hornqvist had the goal for Florida, and Spencer Knight stopped 23 shots for the Panthers. Florida was bidding to become the first team in NHL history to start 12-0-0 at home; the Panthers will merely have to share the record of 11 consecutive home-ice victories to open a season with Chicago, which had such a start in 1963-64. It was also Florida’s first home-ice regular-season loss since last season. The Panthers had won 15 consecutive games at home since last April, excluding playoffs, a span that included two coaches, two arena names and obviously two seasons. And there was some irony that Driedger — who...

Getty Elijah Mitchell receives a handoff during the Week 2 win at Philadelphia. It took more than half the season, but the San Francisco 49ers have figured out who they are. The only question that remains is will the Niners’ injury luck allow them to consistently be that football team? The post-Thanksgiving Day injury report lists starting running back Elijah Mitchell as officially questionable for Sunday’s pivotal matchup against the Minnesota Vikings. Elijah Mitchell is officially questionable for 49ers-Vikings — David Lombardi (@LombardiHimself) November 26, 2021 Mitchell’s designation does not just bring into question the star rookie’s status for a game with potentially major playoff implications — both teams are 5-5 and in the thick of a crowded race for three NFC Wildcard berths come January — but also threatens the specific style of play the Niners have employed to pull themselves back into the postseason race.Niners Deploy ‘Top 40’ Strategy to Climb NFL Charts GETTYRunning back Jeff Wilson Jr., of the San Francisco 49ers, celebrates with wide receiver Kendrick Bourne after scoring on a 25-yard touchdown...
Close games and unpredictable outcomes have been a staple this NFL season. Thanksgiving Day was the latest example. The Bears beat the Lions on a last-second field goal. The Raiders upset the Cowboys on a field goal in overtime. The league and the networks must love it, and fans stay entertained. Going into Thursday, the 23 games decided by a winning score on the final play were the most such games through Week 11 in league history. Victories by Chicago and Las Vegas increased that total to 25. So far, 39 games have been decided by a game-winning score in the final two minutes of regulation or in overtime. Thrilling finishes are exciting for everyone except writers who have to rewrite their stories at the end of games. There’s more parity now than anytime in recent years, and it’s a wide-open race to the Big Game. Last week, three teams without a winning record beat a club that was in first place or tied for first. Since Week 9, that’s now happened 12 times. Each team in both the...
Getty Jayson Tatum of the Boston Celtics. The season has begun to turn around for Jayson Tatum following weeks of struggles. Yet, the Boston Celtics All-Star wing has come in for scrutiny from an anonymous Eastern Conference assistant coach. In his latest piece for ESPN, Tim Bontemps dives into the Celtics’ recent struggles, their hemorrhaging of star talent over the last few seasons, and where the team can go next. When reading through Bontemps’s piece, it’s clear he’s consulted with sources from around the league, but shockingly, their opinions on both Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum are damming. As two young All-Stars in the NBA, you would think that Tatum and Brown’s stock was on an ever-rising trajectory. However, it would see there are particular members of rival organizations that haven’t been impressed with either of the Celtics star players’ current growth. One Eastern Conference assistant coach told Bontemps, “Jayson Tatum is about Jayson Tatum, I don’t think he cares about winning now, and if he does, it is on his terms,” a sentiment that has a striking...
A Texas youth football team has been booted from their league in the middle of the playoffs season for 'being too good'. The Flower Mound Rebels, a team of seven and eight-year-olds, won seven games during their season with a combined score of 199-6.  The Rebels asked the Keller Youth Association to join its leage after the pandemic made it difficult to field a team. But, they were deemed too good to play by the association and were ultimately kicked out of the upcoming playoffs because they were as good as a select level team instead of a peewee team - despite many of the players never having played before. 'This is the Keller league, not the Flower Mound league,' Rhett Taylor, the vice president of the association, told KXAS-TV.  'In my mind, they've dominated our league. Getty Baltimore Ravens outside linebacker Pernell McPhee celebrates a play against the Cincinnati Bengals in 2019. The Baltimore Ravens moved veteran outside linebacker Pernell McPhee to short-term injured reserve on Saturday, per the NFL’s official transaction report, sidelining yet another player in an injury-riddled 2021 season in Baltimore. Players moved to the short-term IR have to miss their team’s next three games, but since the Ravens completed the move before Sunday’s game against the Chicago Bears, McPhee could be back as soon as Baltimore’s December 12 matchup with the Cleveland Browns. It’s yet another knee injury for McPhee, who has underwent surgery on both of his knees in his career, forcing him to miss several games since he entered the NFL. He was a fifth-round draft pick by the Ravens out of Mississippi State in 2011 and quickly emerged as a reliable pass rusher, averaging more than one quarterback pressure every 10 pass rushing snaps as a rookie, per Pro Football Focus. While a lot happened, there are a few key points I want to hit on.   View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Yellowstone (@yellowstone) First, I absolutely loved the scene with Jamie and Kayce. I’ve said for so long that there’s no way Jamie was responsible for the attack. Him and Beth might hate each other, but he’s still a member of that family. The fact he gave John protection, swept the killings on the ranch under the rug and more shows he’s still loyal to the man who raised him. As for his biological father, I’ve continued to have complete faith in my earlier predictions that he’s pulling the strings....
Paramount Yellowstone “Yellowstone” season 4 episode 4 has just premiered on the Paramount Network. And once again, this was a stellar episode that was captivating from beginning to end. This week, Jimmy was one of the characters who stood out, as he slowly began to appreciate the new life waiting for him. This is a review and recap of “Yellowstone” season 4 episode 4, so there will be SPOILERS below.  Jimmy Opened Up the Episode As the episode begins, we see Jimmy on the road with Travis and the rest of the horse training gang, heading to Texas. We hear the same song that we heard when Jimmy was leaving Dutton Ranch last week: Shane Smith & The Saints’ “All I See Is You.” It’s a great song, and I’m happy to hear it again. Travis is really impressive at the horse showing, and Jimmy is obviously taken in by watching his talent. Jimmy had a heart for the rodeo himself, but couldn’t quite cut it. Seeing how well Travis navigates this world that Jimmy loved really draws...
Russell Wilson, Seattle Seahawks. (Mandatory Credit: Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports) These three teams can save quarterback Russell Wilson from the Seattle Seahawks after this season. Things were supposed to get better for the Seattle Seahawks once quarterback Russell Wilson returned from his middle finger injury. So far, the same issues ail the Seahawks even with the one-time Super Bowl champion returning into the starting lineup. After being shutout by the Green Bay Packers the week prior, the Seahawks fell 23-12 to the Kyler Murray and DeAndre Hopkins-less Arizona Cardinals on Sunday. Remember the talk of Wilson potentially demanding a trade off the Seahawks this past offseason? SAN FRANCISCO — Steve Kerr’s coaching tree had a branch sawed off Sunday. Luke Walton, an assistant on Kerr’s staff with the Golden State Warriors from 2014-16, was fired Sunday by the Sacramento Kings, 17 games into his third season. Sacramento was 6-11 this season and failed to eclipse .500 in either of his first two seasons. “It’s a tough business,” Kerr said before his Warriors tipped off against the Toronto Raptors. “You’ve got to have everything lined up to last for a long time in this league. … Luke is one of the finest human beings I know in the NBA. He’s smart, he’s humble, he’s collaborative. He’s everything that you want in a coach. That’s why I asked him to be an assistant coach here years ago.” A member of Kerr’s first coaching staff, Walton has been fired twice since leaving to take the Los Angeles Lakers head coaching job in 2016. He has amassed a 408 winning percentage and never posted a winning season since leaving the Warriors. Related Articles Kurtenbach: Andrew...
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — The end of the Tennessee Titans’ six-game winning streak comes down to a simple number: Five. Ryan Tannehill was intercepted a career-high four times, and the Titans lost the ball on a muffed punt for a season-high five turnovers Sunday in a 22-13 loss to the Houston Texans that snapped the longest active winning streak in the NFL. “You turn the ball over in this league, you’re going to lose,” Titans coach Mike Vrabel said. “Nobody wants to hear that, nobody believes that. But when you do that, it doesn’t matter what the record is. We had five turnovers. They had zero. You’re going to lose the game 99 percent of the time.” The Titans (8-3) also had other issues Sunday. They fell behind 19-0, leading them to go for it on fourth down four times. They turned it over on downs twice and cost a chance at another fourth-and-1 opportunity after a false start by left guard Rodger Saffold. Those mistakes were more than enough even when the Titans outgained Houston 420-190...

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Ryan Tannehill fumbled and immediately dove toward the ground, trying to grab the ball back only to be beaten by his teammate, receiver A.J. Brown. With Derrick Henry and Julio Jones already on a lengthy injured reserve list, Tannehill’s Tennessee Titans teammates absolutely worry about their starting quarterback fighting for a loose ball even though they know he once played wide receiver. “He understands the game, and he knows how to protect himself,” left guard Rodger Saffold said Wednesday. “Sometimes it’s hard to trust that when he’s playing quarterback.” This season, Tannehill is doing whatever it takes to help the Titans win. He’s a big reason why Tennessee (8-2) sits atop the AFC with the NFL’s longest active winning streak at six straight even if his statistics don’t reflect all that he’s doing with Derrick Henry and Julio Jones among the 15 Titans currently on injured reserve. Tannehill’s been sacked 29 times through 10 games after being sacked only 24 times all last season. He also has had more interceptions with eight...
SANTA CLARA — If the 49ers’ 31-10 win over the Los Angeles Rams Monday night looked familiar, that’s because it was familiar. Go back to 2019, the year they went to the Super Bowl. Or even last season when they beat the Rams twice. So maybe it wasn’t all that shocking that for all the 49ers’ issues, the mere sight of playing the Rams served as a defibrillator for the 2021 season. Make a couple of plays on defense. Get a lead. Run the ball early, often and late. Complete just enough passes for a semblance of balance. This is 49ers football, and for all the talk of finesse in their Super Bowl history, at their best the goal is to beat their opponent to the punch. That goes back to the Bill Walsh days, where he’d compare the 49ers’ style to boxing. When the 49ers were good under Jim Harbaugh they were physical. In Kyle Shanahan’s lone winning season as a head coach, they were physical. ESPN analyst Louis Riddick reminded me of that during...
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — With their window tightening for playoff contention, the Minnesota Vikings finally won a close game against a winning team by simply letting loose. By going for it instead of settling for the safer options of kicking and throwing deep to their star wide receivers, the Vikings delivered a signature victory that just might portend a more aggressive approach on offense down the stretch. From the 1-yard line late in the third quarter, Kirk Cousins connected with tight end Tyler Conklin for their second touchdown of the afternoon and a 20-17 lead. AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Steve Sarkisian’s first season as Texas coach is very much going from bad to worse. A five-game losing streak is the worst at Texas in 65 years. And the latest defeat to Kansas — which ended a 56-game road losing streak in the Big 12 for the Jayhawks — came with a season-ending elbow injury for star running back Bijan Robinson. That means Texas (4-6, 2-6 Big 12) will try to win its final two games against West Virginia and Kansas State just to get bowl eligible without its best player, who had rushed for more than 1,000 yards and had scored 16 touchdowns this season. Sarkisian on Monday tried to spin some positives out of the losing skid as the season that began as a bid for the program’s first Big 12 title since 2009 has turned into yet another rebuild. Losing now, Sarkisian suggested, will help him identify problems within the program he needs to fix later. “If we had found a way to win some of these fourth quarter games, if...
Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes showed off his ridiculous skill set by completing a pass left-handed against the Las Vegas Raiders. Patrick Mahomes is one of the NFL’s most talented quarterbacks for a reason. It’s not just the conventional passing that makes him special. It’s the way he does the unusual. NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Ryan Tannehill ran and threw for touchdowns as the Tennessee Titans held off the New Orleans Saints 23-21 Sunday for their NFL-best sixth straight victory. The Titans (8-2) also became he second team in NFL history to win five straight over playoff teams from the season before, joining the 2003 Philadelphia Eagles. Tennessee improved to 7-0 overall against 2020 playoff teams this season. The Saints (5-4) dropped their second straight since losing quarterback Jameis Winston to a season-ending ACL injury. Against the Titans, they also played without a trio of starters in four-time Pro Bowl running back Alvin Kamara because of an injured knee, left tackle Terron Armstead (knee and shoulder injuries) and defensive back C.J. And Cole, who won the Prem three times during his seven-year spell at Stamford Bridge, feels his former side are the best equipped to go all the way this season. He told Coral: "I am throwing it out there now, Chelsea will win the league. "I watch them every game, a lot of the time live working as a pundit at the games, and they are just so strong. Here's the team he started with. Reflection is a big part of winning in fantasy sports. Many different draft styles succeed. Each fantasy owner must decide which path best fits their strengths. The trick is finding the plan that works over time. This season in the high-stakes National Fantasy Baseball Championship (NFBC), Phil Dussault walked away with a boatload of cash ($324,000) and a lifelong permission slip from his girl to play fantasy sports. I remember listening last March to the Dead Pull Hitter podcast between Dussault and Rob DiPietro. They were reviewing previous successes, and Dussault talked about streaming hitters while also knowing he built his teams with two front-end aces. My first thought was that theory made sense in 2020, over a Covid-shortened baseball season, but churning bats typically doesn’t end well in 15-team leagues over 162 games. Get fantasy and betting...
FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. (AP) — Cordarrelle Patterson says the Atlanta Falcons must “stop giving people heart attacks.” Patterson is in his first season in Atlanta, so he lacks the historical perspective to know heart-stopping wins in the first half of 2021 are the Falcons fans’ preferred option to heartbreak losses of last year. Thanks to the latest scary win, a last-second, 27-25 thriller at the New Orleans Saints on Sunday, the Falcons (4-4) already have matched their 2020 win total at the midpoint of the season. Of their four wins, three have come by no more than three points. First-year coach Arthur Smith’s Falcons now can aim for their first winning season since 2017, also the year of Atlanta’s last playoff appearance. Smith has been successful in helping the Falcons learn how to finish games. That’s a noteworthy accomplishment one year after Atlanta lost four fourth-quarter leads and made inglorious history as the NFL’s first team to lose back-to-back games after holding fourth-quarter leads of at least 15 points. There is much room for more improvement as the offense...

FOXBORO (CBS) — The New England Revolution would have loved to have finished off their historic 2021 regular season with another win. Instead, they settled for one heck of a celebration inside Gillette Stadium. The Revs closed out their regular season with a disappointing 1-0 defeat to Inter Miami CF, but that did not rain on their Supporters’ Shield celebration after the match. Players gathered on the field to lift the Supporters’ Shield in front of fans for the first time, and it did not disappoint. There was a season-high 31,365 fans in attendance on Sunday, and the majority of them stuck around for the postgame bash. The Bachelor Return and Black-ish Final Season Dates Set at ABC 13 Surprising Ways to Save on Groceries Tottenham Hotspur were thrashed by Manchester United 3-0 over the weekend and responded to that result by parting ways with head coach Nuno Espirito Santo and his staff on Monday.  © LaPresse It appears Tottenham already have a replacement in mind.  Sky Sports and other outlets report Antonio Conte, who guided Chelsea to the 2016-17 Premier League title, is "in advanced talks" to take over as new Tottenham boss. Conte, who also has four Serie A titles on his resume, has been available since he left Inter Milan "by mutual consent" in May after Inter won the Serie A crown for the first time in 11 years.  Conte had been linked with Tottenham as a potential replacement for Jose Mourinho, who was fired in April and before speculation arose that star striker and England captain Harry Kane wanted to complete a big-money move to Manchester City. Tottenham refused to sell Kane before the summer transfer window closed at the end of...

DETROIT (AP) — Aleksander Barkov scored in overtime and the Florida Panthers — playing a day after coach Joe Quenneville resigned amid a sex scandal — beat Detroit 3-2 on Friday to run their season-opening winning streak to eight. Quenneville, the second-winningest coach in NHL history, resigned Thursday, two days after being among those implicated for not responding swiftly to allegations by former Chicago player Kyle Beach of being sexually assaulted by then-Blackhawks assistant Brad Aldrich during the 2010 Stanley Cup playoffs. Andrew Brunette, an assistant under Quenneville, directed the Panthers as interim coach. Barkov scored twice, Eetu Luostarinen had a goal and Sergei Bobrovsky made 28 saves to help the Panthers move within two of the NHL record for consecutive victories to start a season set by Toronto in 1993-94 and matched by Buffalo in 2006-07. Sam Gagner and Pius Suter scored for Detroit, with Suter tying it with 3:41 left in regulation with his first goal of the season. Luostarinen and Barkov gave Florida a 2-0 lead in the first period. Luostarinen redirected a shot through goalie Alex...
Rookie head coaches usually inherit losing teams and are tasked with quickly building a winning culture in the NFL. If they don’t get it done fast enough, it’s onto the next coach. There’s no patience in sports, but judging guys before the midpoint of their first season is unfair. Only one of the NFL’s seven first-year coaches has a winning record. Brandon Staley is off to a 4-2 start with the Los Angeles Chargers. It helps that he took over a team that finished 7-9 last year and already had a franchise quarterback in Justin Herbert. Arthur Smith is 3-3 with the Atlanta Falcons, including three wins in the last four games. He has Matt Ryan, who looks like his old self after a rough start. The five other rookie coaches are 5-28 combined. If owners listened to media and fans, some of these guys wouldn’t last through their first season. Some people called for Urban Meyer to lose his job before he even stepped on a sideline with the Jacksonville Jaguars. He was criticized for hiring former...
