Within the dog-pound fraternity of the Minnesota Timberwolves 2021-22 roster, the disposition of D’Angelo Russell is a noticeably feline outlier.  The other stars that comprise the Wolves’ Big 3, Karl-Anthony Towns and Anthony Edwards, are naturally gregarious, effusive to the cusp of sloppiness, expressing their sentiments. Most of the rest of the crew — culture-creator Patrick Beverley, dervishes Jarred Vanderbilt and Josh Okogie, sharpshooter Malik Beasley, rookie Leandro Bolmaro — find their natural rhythm in a barking, cavorting environment.  DLo is different. By nature he is dismissive of the canned back-and-forth of media public relations. He is prim and exacting in his habits, lithe and silky in his movements, and professorial in mien, as if auditioning for the Lawrence Fishburne role in “Higher Learning.” In the tumult of NBA hoops, he is constantly surveying the court with a serene dispatch, gliding from station to station, his expert dribble attaching the ball to his hand like a yo-yo. Ideally it wouldn’t make a sound.  Thus far this season, DLo has been an unlikely difference-maker during one of the most enjoyable stints...

DEAR MISS MANNERS: I discovered a lady’s wallet lying on the ground in the parking lot of a grocery store. I examined the contents and found that it contained a driver’s license, credit cards, insurance cards, a vaccination certificate and other important forms of identification, but no money. Her address was nearby, and I was able to get her phone number online, so I called to tell her that I’d found her wallet and would drive over to return it. She sounded excited and grateful, but when I arrived, she immediately inspected it to see how much money was there before giving me a disappointed look. I explained that I’d found the wallet empty of cash, but she seemed unsatisfied, perhaps silently wondering if I’d taken what had been there. She then handed me a dusty bottle of wine as a gift and thanked me again, quickly escorting me to the door. By the usual measures, the U.S. economy has been booming this year. Employment has risen by more than 5 million since January; a record number of Americans say this is a good time to find a quality job, a sentiment reflected in the willingness of an unprecedented number of workers to quit (yes, high quit rates are a good sign). Yet Americans are, or say they are, pessimistic about the economic situation. For example, the widely cited Michigan index of consumer sentiment has slid to a level not seen since the depths of the pandemic slump. How can people be feeling so bad about a seemingly good economy? One answer is that Americans are upset about inflation and disrupted supply chains. And that’s surely true. But I’d suggest that it’s only part of the story — that to an important extent, when you ask people about the state of the economy, their replies don’t necessarily reflect their actual experience. Instead, they respond based on what they imagine is happening to other people, a perception that can be shaped by news...

VIDEO3:2603:26As Activision plummets, two traders discuss what's next for the video game stocksTrading Nation Video game stock Activision Blizzard is in the middle of a massive sell-off. The stock fell more than 14% on Wednesday, its worst day since November 2008, after announcing delays for the latest releases in its Overwatch and Diablo franchises. The studio is grappling with sexual harassment and discrimination allegations that led to firings over the recent quarter and development disruptions. Activision is by far the worst performer among the top video game stocks. Its shares have fallen 28% in 2021 – competitors Take-Two Interactive and Electronic Arts are also lower for the year, but at just a fraction of Activision's losses. The video game stocks, bid up during the worst of the Covid pandemic lockdowns, have fallen out of favor with the reopening this year. "Now the stock has gotten very oversold on a weekly basis. You're down to levels in the mid-$60s which does hit … a trend from 2019, so a two-year area of trend line support," Mark Newton, global head of technical...

NEW YORK -- Tony Morrison is a two-time Emmy-award-winning producer at Good Morning America and co-host of the new podcast, D23: The Official Disney Fan Club.In August of 2021, Tony came out as HIV positive in a self-published essay on GoodMorningAmerica.com. "The response I've gotten from writing that essay has been hugely supportive. You can't really prepare for a response quite like that," he says. "I've been overwhelmed with love and support."While Tony is usually a very private person, he hopes sharing his story helps to combat the negative stigma that follows an HIV diagnosis. "The thing about HIV stigma and misinformation is that we have never separated the illness from the person, and that is the stigma that really is endangering people," he notes. Finally, Tony hopes to inspire others to find their courage to come out. "If I can speak out and say that you're not alone and that life is so good we owe that to people who aren't here anymore."You can read Tony's full essay here. For more information about D23: The Official Disney Fan Club, the official...

Sign up for the free Mother Jones newsletter.Twice in the last year, a Walmart employee has quit via intercom. Last month in Louisiana, Beth McGrath took to the speaker to announce “Beth from electronics” was going to “quit” because the company treats some employees “like shit.” This came almost exactly a year after Shana Blackwell—a night stocker in Texas—announced to her whole Walmart that she “fucking quit” her job because the “company treats their employees like shit.” There’s no need for a third exact copy—intercom, Walmart, “like shit”—to notice a pattern: People are rejecting bad working conditions and quitting at rates we haven’t seen in decades. One report found that this year, 1 in 4 workers quit their jobs. In August 2021 alone, around 4.3 million people quit—that is 2.9 percent of the total US workforce. There have never been that many in a single month since 2000, when the Labor Department began tracking quitters. Yankees starting pitcher Gerrit Cole was so bad that Aaron Boone pulling him in the third inning was the best decision that could’ve happened Tuesday. The New York Yankees kicked off the postseason with an abysmal performance from starting pitcher Gerrit Cole against the Boston Red Sox. The ace walked two, allowed four hits and gave up two massive homers on his way to being pulled in the third inning. When Yankees manager Aaron Boone pulled Cole, the Yankees were down 3-0 and bleeding badly from the plate. While this pitching change is probably the right one, it comes with a painful caveat for Yankees fans: the 30-year-old Cole is in the second year of his nine-year $324 million contract. RAISING children is certainly not easy and it's fair to say most people with tiny tots are doing their best. For a few heady weeks in 2004 and 2005, it seemed a miracle had occurred. The ivory-billed woodpecker—the “Good Lord Bird” known for its startling size, massive white bill, and a call described as being like a “toy trumpet”—had been found living in a national wildlife refuge along the Cache River in Arkansas. Multiple sightings were reported. The sounds of woodpeckers pounding on trees were recorded. A single grainy video was shot. The presence of the bird was confirmed by everyone from the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology to The Nature Conservancy.  They were all wrong. North America’s largest woodpecker is extinct, and on Wednesday the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service made that official. Though the supposed sightings in Arkansas brought hope, years of effort failed to find any additional evidence. The last confirmed sighting of an ivory-billed woodpecker before that date was in 1944. It’s likely the bird actually vanished from the world about 80 years ago. The striking black, white, and red coloration of the ivory-billed woodpecker, along with its status as the largest woodpecker in the United States, helped make the bird a favorite with both...

Like most people, I have been walking more than usual during the pandemic and enjoying it. My meetings with students and colleagues have turned into walking meetings around campus for over a year. Now, I have a problem: School is starting soon, and I don't want to go back to the classroom. We all saw this coming. Give employees a taste of the outdoors, and they might not want to go back to their offices and desks. So I am thinking of teaching my fall courses outside. Yet while I was researching this possibility, I discovered a problem. I had always read that walking increased cognitive functioning and problem solving, but it turns out that it's not that simple. In 2014, a new study showed that walking decreased rational and linear thinking and increased divergent thinking and imaginative mind-wandering. Uh oh. Will my students learn less if I teach them while walking? I teach philosophy, a discipline that prides itself on rational and analytic thinking. So is walking going to clash with the values of my profession? But wait,...
