The GOP lawmakers, led by Texas Reps. Roger Williams and August Pfluger, said the move would be a “catastrophic mistake” and further exacerbate high energy prices in the letter addressed to Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm and Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo. The congressmen noted that a previous crude oil export ban had been opposed by Democrats and Republicans alike. “President Biden’s war on American energy continues with his Administration’s latest discussions to reinstate the export ban on crude oil, which was repealed in 2015 on a bipartisan vote,” Williams said in a statement. “Banning crude oil exports from the U.S. would be a catastrophic mistake that will harm the livelihoods of blue collar workers in the Permian Basin and result in higher prices for international crude, giving Russia more profits,” Pfluger added. “US energy policy should put Midland over Moscow. Even more, an export ban will lead to even higher costs for American families down the...

Alabama, Florida and Mississippi are receiving more than $103 million in BP oil spill settlement money for new and continued coastal projects. “These projects, combined with existing investments, continue to advance our goal of protecting and restoring species and habitats impacted by the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill,” Jeff Trandahl, executive director and CEO of the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, said Thursday. The 11 new projects and two extensions from the foundation’s Gulf Environmental Benefit Fund bring its total allocations across the five Gulf states to $1.6 billion, a news release said. Alabama is getting more than $43 million for four new projects, the foundation said. Florida is getting nearly $33 million for one new project. The remaining $27 million will support six new projects and continue two others in Mississippi. The Gulf Environmental Benefit Fund received $2.5 billion in settlement money from criminal charges against BP and its codefendants. The fund is for work to fix damage and reduce risks of future damage to natural resources affected by the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill. State and...

Forbes Media Chairman Steve Forbes slammed the Biden administration on "The Faulkner Focus" Friday for hindering U.S. economic recovery with "artificial barriers" following weak November hiring numbers that were significantly below expectations. US HIRING STUMBLES IN NOVEMBER AS ECONOMY ADDS JUST 210,000 NEW JOBS STEVE FORBES: What you have is an economy that wants to move ahead but there's still artificial barriers there. Yes, we know the huge supply chain problems. Those are underestimated when you shut down a global economy, not helping that in the future. Europe is locking down again. But the fact is that lockdowns don't work. We know medically they don't work, economically they're hugely disruptive, in terms of health care they're hugely disruptive. So in terms of the economy, the administration is still waging war, for example, against the oil and gas industry. They haven't yet explained why getting a barrel of oil from Russia is somehow better for climate change than getting a barrel of oil from America. So they want Russia to produce more and we to produce less. And those kinds of...
A mother revealed it took five days to remove diaper cream from her daughters' hair after they covered themselves with Desitin to look like Elsa from Frozen. Wendy Pryce, from New York City, told Today Parents that she was 'absolutely convinced' that she'd have to shave her daughters' hair off after the incident, during which Jamie, four, and Morgan, three, coated their hair and faces in Desitin.  To Wendy's horror, she discovered that the product - which is used to treat diaper rash in babies - contains Zinc Oxide, an ingredient that is insoluble in water and therefore near-impossible to simply wash off. In fact, when she attempted to soak the Desitin off, it actually made things worse.    'My immediate reaction was to put them in the bathtub,' she explained. 'That was my first mistake - getting their hair wet. Zinc oxide is water insoluble. New York (CNN Business)President Joe Biden has already launched the biggest intervention into energy markets in a decade. Big Oil is nervous he's not nearly done yet.For weeks, Democrats have been calling for Biden to go even further than releasing strategic oil reserves by banning US oil companies from shipping oil overseas. Despite pressure from lawmakers in his party, Biden has so far refrained from taking the more extreme step of banning oil exports. A spokesperson from the White House declined to comment. But American Petroleum Institute CEO Mike Sommers told CNN that the powerful oil-and-gas trade group is "absolutely" taking the risk of an export ban seriously, including by leaning on moderate Democrats to talk White House officials out of the idea. Why Bidens bid to lower gas prices is more of a Band-Aid than a game changer"We're marshalling all of our forces. We're doing everything we can," Sommers said during an interview in his Washington office. Sommers warned that not only would an export ban backfire on US drivers by jacking up prices at the pump, it would help...

To British Airways, using cooking oil as fuel is not a half-baked idea. British Airlines announced on Thursday it signed an agreement with a U.K. refinery that turns recycled cooking oil and other household waste into fuel as part of an effort to make air travel more sustainable. Thousands of tons of sustainable aviation fuel will be produced in the United Kingdom for the first time, the airline said. "This agreement marks another important step on our journey to net-zero carbon emissions and forms part of our commitment, as part of International Airlines Group, to power 10% of flights with [sustainable aviation fuel] by 2030," said Sean Doyle, British Airways CEO, in a press statement . DAILY ON ENERGY: OMICRON THREAT HANGS OVER OIL MARKET AFTER OPEC DECISION The airline signed a multiyear agreement with the Phillips 66 Humber refinery, based in North Lincolnshire, to produce sustainable aviation fuel in the future. While the fuel will still produce carbon emissions, British Airways said it will reduce the "lifecycle CO2 emissions" by 80% compared to traditional...

London (CNN Business)Shell has pulled out of a controversial oil project in Scotland that was strongly opposed by climate activist groups. The company said its decision was based on the economics of the project and the risk of delays, and that it remained committed to its oil and gas operations in the North Sea.Shell, together with Blackstone-backed Siccar Point, had been waiting on the UK government's permission to begin developing the Cambo oilfield. The venture, which would produce 164 million barrels of crude during the first phase of development, had become a flashpoint in energy transition debates and the future of fossil fuel exploration in the oil and gas-rich North Sea. The UK government, which hosted the recent COP26 talks in Scotland and has pitched itself as a global climate leader, had come under enormous pressure to reject the massive project. Cambo's opponents argue that an expansion in oil production undermines the country's goal to go carbon neutral by mid-century. Shell had a 30% stake in the oilfield, while Siccar Point controls the rest of the venture. It's future is now...
It’s almost Hanukkah and that means eight days and nights of festivities and food. However, the traditional dishes eaten at Hanukkah are not the healthiest. The holiday celebrates the victory of the Maccabees over the Syrian-Greeks. When the Maccabees rededicated the Holy Temple in Jerusalem, they only had enough oil to burn for one day but a miracle occurred and the oil burned for 8 days. Fried foods such as latkes (potato pancakes) and sufganiyot (jelly doughnuts) became the traditional fare for Hanukkah because they are cooked in oil and remind us of the great miracle that happened there. It is also customary to eat cheesy foods on Hanukkah. This is based on the Book of Judith in which a woman helped conquer an Assyrian warrior by feeding him salty cheese which made him thirsty, and wine to make him drunk. After he was drunk, she beheaded him with his own sword. Talk about a hangover! In honor of Judith’s bravery, cheese, and dairy foods became part of the traditional dishes of Hanukkah. So how do we honor the...

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – The president’s announcement to release millions of gallons of oil from the country’s reserves is already driving down some gas prices nationally, but Pittsburghers are still paying about the same $3.55 as they were a couple of weeks ago. “Consumers can probably expect gas prices to be cheaper in the next coming weeks and next couple of months barring any outlying factors,” said Jim Garrity, AAA East Central spokesperson. Although the Omicron variant of COVID-19 has just been found, oil providers are expecting less people to travel, which has already made an impact. “We started to see crude oil prices come down when it was announced that the Biden administration would tap into oil reserves,” said Garrity. “Then we saw crude oil prices come down even further when concerns hit the market about the Omicron variant.” READ MORE: Man Being Charged After...

LONDON (AP) — Royal Dutch Shell has pulled out of a controversial oil project near Scotland’s Shetland Islands, saying the project no longer makes economic sense for the company. Shell had a 30% stake in the Cambo project, which is opposed by environmental groups who say Britain should stop developing new oil and gas fields as part of its efforts to combat global warming. “After comprehensive screening of the proposed Cambo development, we have concluded the economic case for investment in this project is not strong enough at this time,” Shell said in a statement. “However, continued investment in oil and gas in the U.K. remains critical to the country’s energy security.” Siccar Point Energy, Cambo’s controlling partner, said it still planned to move ahead with the project. Developing the field 125 kilometers (78 miles) west of the Shetland Islands will create 1,000 jobs and help ease the U.K.’s transition to a low-carbon economy, Chief Executive Jonathan Roger said in a statement. “We will continue to engage with the U.K. government and wider stakeholders on the future development of...
BANGKOK (AP) — Stocks were mostly higher in Asia on Friday after a broad rally on Wall Street as investors kept an eye on the spread of the new coronavirus variant and measures governments are taking to restrain it. Hong Kong slipped more than 1% while Tokyo edged lower. Shanghai and Seoul were higher while Sydney was nearly unchanged. Chinese ride-hailing service Didi Global Inc. said Friday it will pull out of the New York Stock Exchange and shift its listing to Hong Kong as the ruling Communist Party tightens control over tech industries. The Securities and Exchange Commission has moved to require that U.S.-listed foreign stocks like Didi disclose their ownership structures and audit reports, which could lead to some of them being delisted. In another blow for China’s troubled property sector, Hong Kong-traded developer Kaisa Group said it had failed to get the required approvals from bond holders to extend the deadline on payment on $400 million of 6.5% offshore bonds. It had wanted to have the new notes be due on June 6, 2023...
LOS ANGELES (AP) — A proposal to replace an oil pipeline that was shut down in 2015 after causing California’s worst coastal spill in 25 years is inching though a government review, even as the state moves toward banning gas-powered vehicles and oil drilling. Consideration of the $300 million proposal by Houston-based Plains All American Pipeline is expected to enter a critical phase next year at a time when new scrutiny is being placed on the state’s oil industry after an offshore pipeline break in October near Huntington Beach. That rupture released at least 25,000 gallons (94,635 liters) of crude that closed beaches and took a deadly toll on sea life along one of the world’s fabled surf breaks. Farther north, the 123-mile (198 kilometer) Plains pipeline travels along the coastline near Santa Barbara before turning inland. It’s buried and nearly invisible for much of its length to Kern County, in the state’s midsection. For decades it was a vital link between oil platforms off the coast and processing plants on shore, with shipments averaging 1.8 million gallons (6.9 million...
It’s curious how certain phrases catch on. When I took on Joe Biden and Barack Obama in 2008, they used “Hope and Change.” Now, Biden is the inspiration for “Let’s Go, Brandon.” My slogan was “Drill, baby, drill.” It was true and necessary in 2008, and it’s needed now more than ever. During my vice presidential debate against Biden, at the time a four-decades long senator, the price of gas was $3.65 a gallon and a barrel of oil was $97 dollars. Biden had no solutions to the problem of high gas prices, and 13 years later, he remains as clueless. Biden only reluctantly acknowledges that we have supply shortages. His baffling solution is to import oil from foreign countries. His response to high energy prices is to run and beg OPEC, the international cartel, for more oil. It’s no secret that gasoline prices have increased some 50% since last year. The higher prices have rippled through the U.S. economy, raising shipping and delivery costs for almost everything. After first denying gasoline prices were rising, then blaming the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), and most recently accusing oil companies of conspiring to raise gasoline prices, the administration has settled on a two-pronged response: announcing the release of 50 million barrels of oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) and blaming people for not buying electric vehicles (EVs). (RELATED: Biden Announces Release Of 50 Million Barrels Of Oil From Strategic Petroleum Reserve) The U.S. consumes around 20 million barrels of crude oil every day, around one-fifth of total world production of around 98 million barrels per day. So, the planned SPR release represents about two and one-half days of U.S. crude consumption and around five hours of world production. Moreover, the oil won’t be released all at once. Some of it may even be shipped overseas, as has happened in the few previous releases. Finally, the SPR...
DANA POINT (CBSLA) – Fishing along 45 miles of the Orange County coastline has reopened, after it was closed because of an oil spill off of Huntington Beach in October. AUSTIN, Texas (CBSDFW.COM/AP) – Regulators of Texas’ oil and gas industry that buckled during February’s deadly freeze moved Tuesday, Nov. 30 toward making some producers more prepared for cold weather, but not in time for this winter as the nation’s power grid monitor warned the state is still at risk of blackouts. Republican Gov. Greg Abbott is guaranteeing the lights will stay on this winter. READ MORE: Be Wary Of Online Puppy Purchases; Veterinarian Group Says Pet Scams Are Rampant, Particularly In TexasBut energy experts are less confident and say Texas’ response over the last nine months to a winter storm that killed hundreds of people — including some who froze to death after power was knocked out to the proud energy capital of the U.S. for days — has been insufficient. Some were concerned that gas operators that froze up in February — cutting off fuel to power plants — would be able to skirt new weatherization mandates by seeking exemptions. But gas supply deemed critical by the state could not avoid doing so under new rules passed Tuesday,...
So much pain and suffering and economic ruin could be avoided with just a simple jab. Facebook is a menace. COVID-19 is a menace. Conservatism is a cesspool. Together, those three ingredients have created a toxic stew of malevolent death and devastation. We can talk about all those things in the abstract, look at the numbers and statistics, and catch the occasional whiff of seditionist right-wing rhetoric. But I hadn’t really fully understood just how horrifying that combination of right-wing extremism, Facebook, and a killer virus was until I became a regular at the Herman Cain Awards subreddit. This series will document some of those stories, so we are aware of what the other side is doing to our country. Today’s cautionary tale features the Buttons, who had a summer wedding—and a fall funeral.  Not going to lie—this meme is pretty much the reason I decided to use this story.  There are people in this country who believe pretty much any stupid shit they read on the internet.  Someone in the world actually believed that “the navel can detect which veins have dried...
Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer abandoned a lawsuit Tuesday aimed at shutting down an oil pipeline that runs through part of the Great Lakes but said the state would continue pursuing a separate case with the same goal. Whitmer’s legal maneuver followed a federal judge’s decision earlier this month to retain jurisdiction over a suit brought by Enbridge Energy after the state revoked an easement allowing Line 5 to cross the Straits of Mackinac. It further complicates a lengthy dispute over the 68-year-old pipeline, raising the possibility of simultaneous federal and state court cases alongside political negotiations involving Michigan, the Biden administration and the Canadian government. Enbridge contends Line 5 is a federal matter, raising questions of U.S. law and commerce between the two nations. Whitmer’s administration says the key issue is Michigan’s right to protect the Great Lakes, much of which are within its boundaries. “No oil company should be able to dictate to Michiganders what happens in our sovereign lands and waters,” said Dan Eichinger, director of the state Department of Natural Resources. Line 5 moves 23 million gallons...
Fishing can resume along the Orange County coast Tuesday afternoon, after the California Department of Fish and Wildlife determined it is safe to eat seafood taken from the waters after a massive oil spill in early October. An estimated 25,000 gallons of crude oil spilled into the ocean from a ruptured pipeline off the coast of Huntington Beach. Sticky black crude washed ashore along beaches across Southern California, and the Orange County shoreline was closed to recreational and commercial activities, including surfing, swimming and fishing. On Oct. 3, the state’s Department of Fish and Wildlife issued a fisheries closure that stretched 45 miles along the coast and banned the taking of fish and shellfish from Huntington Beach to Dana Point, including all bays and harbors from Seal Beach to San Onofre State Beach. California A long road ahead to recovery from Huntington Beach oil spill An oily sheen that appeared Saturday morning was likely a residual leak from the ruptured pipeline that fouled Orange County beaches, officials say. State officials determined it was not healthy to consume...
A group of left-wing House Democrats asked the Justice Department (DOJ) to free a lawyer serving a six-month sentence who fought the fossil fuel industry. The Democrats, led by Democratic Michigan Rep. Rashida Tlaib and Democratic Illinois Rep. Jesús García, urged the DOJ to immediately “rectify the unprecedented and unjust imprisonment” of environmental lawyer Steven Donziger in a letter sent to Attorney General Merrick Garland on Monday. Donziger previously sued the massive U.S. oil corporation Chevron on behalf of indigenous groups in South America. “Mr. Donziger, who has no prior criminal record, has been a beloved and vaunted member of the environmental and human rights communities for decades,” the letter stated. “Mr. Donziger has done nothing but uphold the highest professional ethics in representing and protecting his clients but has since been thrown in federal prison for petty contempt charges,” it read. “The Biden administration must send a clear signal that it stands with communities harmed by pollution and environmental destruction and the lawyers courageous enough to represent them and not the corporations that benefit from polluting the water, air,...
(CNN) — The surge in oil prices this year has angered drivers, tainted Americans’ views on the economy and confounded both the White House and Federal Reserve. Unfortunately, JPMorgan Chase says the oil spike is just getting started. In a new report on Monday, JPMorgan warned clients that Brent crude oil will hit $125 a barrel next year and $150 in 2023, in large part because OPEC doesn’t have nearly as much firepower to respond to high prices as many assume. READ MORE: Wrong-Way Crash Shuts Down Lanes Near SB I-5, I-80 Junction In Natomas“They don’t have the barrels. It’s a mirage,” Christyan Malek, JPMorgan’s head of oil and gas research and the lead author of the new report, told CNN in a phone interview. $150 oil is more than double today’s Brent price of about $73.50. If that forecast proves accurate, it would likely translate to national gas prices topping $5 a gallon and surely exacerbate inflationary pressures hitting the US economy and squeezing American families. The central problem, Malek said, is that while OPEC nations have plenty of oil in the ground, they...

Hong Kong (CNN Business)Global stocks and oil prices are falling again after a brief respite Monday from the heavy sell-off triggered by the emergence of the Omicron coronavirus variant. Stocks in Asia Pacific and Europe slid, Dow futures were down 1% and oil prices fell about 2% as more countries reported cases of the variant and imposed new travel restrictions. The mood was also dampened by a warning from Moderna CEO Stéphane Bancel that current vaccines will struggle with Omicron."There is no world, I think, where [the effectiveness] is the same level . . . we had with [the] Delta [variant]," Bancel said in an interview with the Financial Times published on Tuesday. "I think it's going to be a material drop. I just don't know how much because we need to wait for the data. But all the scientists I've talked to ... are like, 'This is not going to be good'."South Korea's Kospi (KOSPI) led losses in the region, falling 2.4%, while Japan's Nikkei 225 (N225) dropped 1.6%. Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index (HSI) fell 1.6%. The Shanghai Composite (SHCOMP) was flat....
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Jewish families across Minnesota are celebrating the second night of Hanukkah. The eight-night Festival of Lights is filled with history and folklore. So what is the significance of Hanukkah? And how is it celebrated today? READ MORE: How Can We Best Prevent & Treat Dry Skin?WCCO’s Jeff Wagner learned there are many layers to the holiday. Candles bring light to darkness and for eight nights in the Jewish faith this time of year, that light carries a symbolic and proud story. “Hanukkah means rededication,” said Rabbi Marcia Zimmerman, the senior Rabbi and Temple Israel. Sometimes the spelling of Hanukkah starts with an ‘H’ and other times with a ‘Ch’, why is that? The sound at the beginning of Hanukkah is from the Hebrew letter ‘chet’ which doesn’t translate to English, thus the different spellings. What is the significance of celebrating Hanukkah? “The significance of celebrating Hanukkah is this military conquest,” Zimmerman said. Thousands of years ago in Israel in 163 B.C., Jews fought to overcome oppressive Greek rule and reclaimed their religion in the second...
HUNTINGTON BEACH (CBSLA) — Officials announced on Monday that fishing may resume after an oil spill forced authorities to close to the coast nearly two months ago. Since Oct. 3 fishing on much of the Orange County coast was banned following an oil spill on Oct. 2. It spanned 650 square miles of marine waters and about 45 miles of shoreline from Seal Beach to San Onofre State Beach. State officials said the ban on fishing will be lifted at noon on Tuesday, Nov. 30. New York (CNN Business)The surge in oil prices this year has angered drivers, tainted Americans' views on the economy and confounded both the White House and Federal Reserve. Unfortunately, JPMorgan Chase says the oil spike is just getting started. In a new report on Monday, JPMorgan (JPM) warned clients that Brent crude oil will hit $125 a barrel next year and $150 in 2023, in large part because OPEC doesn't have nearly as much firepower to respond to high prices as many assume."They don't have the barrels. It's a mirage," Christyan Malek, JPMorgan's head of oil and gas research and the lead author of the new report, told CNN in a phone interview. Why Bidens bid to lower gas prices is more of a Band-Aid than a game changer$150 oil is more than double today's Brent price of about $73.50. If that forecast proves accurate, it would likely translate to national gas prices topping $5 a gallon and surely exacerbate inflationary pressures hitting the US economy and squeezing American families. The central problem, Malek said, is that while OPEC nations have plenty...
MIAMI (CBSMiami) — Florida drivers could soon receive deep discounts at the gas pump. Crude oil prices were slashed on “Black Friday” and unable to recover on Monday. The crude price cut was sparked by concerns about the emergence of a new strain of COVID-19 and the implications it could have on future fuel demand. Friday, the price of U.S. crude dropped 13%, finishing the week 10% lower than the week before. Friday’s closing price of $68.15 per barrel is the lowest daily price since September 9, 2021. During that time, the price of gasoline in Florida was teetering on $3 per gallon. Forty-three lawsuits have been waged against more than 200 energy-related companies in Louisiana since 2013, and many, if not all, are angling for cash settlements with environmental credit schemes. Similar credit initiatives have failed to deliver in other states, critics note, and the cap-and-trade style system of buying and selling environmental credits requires legislative approval before lawsuit settlement money can be put to use. An April 2021 memo authored by the New Orleans-based Pelican Institute highlighted several issues in two legislative bills that would establish a central Coastal Zone Restoration Fund and credit-trading structure in Louisiana. The bills – House Bill 569 and Senate Bill 233 – did not pass during the 2021 regular legislative session, but they are expected to return in 2022 as hundreds of millions of dollars hang in the balance from the cascade of lawsuits. One company has settled so far. International mining giant Freeport McMoRan agreed to a $100 million payout earlier this year that would filter through the proposed credit system and operate similar to greenhouse gas emission trading programs. The Freeport McMoRan settlement...
A top Biden administration official said the president is prepared to release more crude oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve to lower prices after it announced a 50 million barrel release last week. Amos Hochstein, the senior energy security adviser at the State Department, said opening the reserve was among the tools the administration had at its disposal and "will be available again" if necessary. Hochstein made his comments during an interview with CNBC on Monday, drawing a distinction between the 32 million barrels to be made available under the Energy Department's exchange authority and the 18 million to be offered to companies in an accelerated sale. HOW BIDEN'S STRATEGIC PETROLEUM RESERVE SALE WILL WORK AND WHAT IT WILL DO “Remember, this was not a 50 million barrel release; 30 million barrels were an exchange where companies and traders can take the oil now and return it over a scheduled period of time. That means the Strategic Petroleum Reserve will be replenished,” Hochstein said . “And therefore, we have more flexibility to be able...

"Absolutely. This is a tool that was available to us and will be available again," Amos Hochstein told CNBC's Hadley Gamble in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates on Monday. His comments come as energy analysts assess the effectiveness of a U.S.-led pledge to release millions of barrels of oil from strategic reserves after OPEC+ producers had resisted calls to pump more to help cool the market. "Remember, this was not a 50-million-barrel release, 30 million barrels were an exchange where companies and traders can take the oil now and return it over a scheduled period of time. That means the Strategic Petroleum Reserve will be replenished," Hochstein said. "And therefore, we have more flexibility to be able to do this again in...
New York (CNN Busines)Stocks rebounded Monday, bouncing back from the steep selloff at the end of last week, when investors feared the Omicron Covid variant could disrupt the global economic rebound.Reports of the new Omicron variant of the coronavirus brought back memories of last summer when the fast-spreading Delta variant put a dent in the recovery and consumer confidence. This spooked investors on a traditionally quiet day in the market following Thanksgiving, leading to one of the worst days for stocks this year. The Dow (INDU) logged its worst day since October 2020, while the S&P 500 (SPX) had its worst performance since February. The Nasdaq Composite (COMP) recorded its steepest fall since September. But just as the market quickly bounced back from its Delta fears, history appears to be repeating itself: Investors are taking a breath and sensing a buying opportunity. The market opened in the green, with all three indexes sharply higher. West Texas Intermediate crude futures, the U.S. oil benchmark, gained $3.31, or 5.3%, to trade at $71.48 per barrel at about 8:15 a.m. on Wall Street. The move puts the contract back above $70, after it broke below that key level on Friday. WTI tumbled 13% on Friday for its worst day since April 2020, and also closed below its 200-day moving average — a closely-followed technical indicator — for the first time since November 2020. Brent crude, the international oil benchmark, advanced 4.3% on Monday to $75.90. The contract declined 11.55% on Friday, and along with WTI registered a fifth straight week of losses. "Friday's price slide was excessive," said analysts at Commerzbank. "Admittedly, the omicron variant is fueling concerns about...
SACRAMENTO —  Offshore oil derricks dotting the California coastline continue pumping despite a history of catastrophic spills and vows from generations of politicians to send them to the scrapheap. They’ve even survived a modest attempt by state officials more than a decade ago to offer incentives to oil companies that chose to abandon their costly operations. Now, the failure of California’s “Rigs to Reefs” program, an effort to transform oil platforms into underwater artificial reefs, stands as a cautionary tale to those who have called for a drilling ban after thousands of gallons of crude washed ashore in Orange County in October. “The question that we’ve been grappling with is how do we minimize risks to taxpayers and maximize the speed with which we can get these things gone,” said state Sen. Bob Hertzberg (D-Van Nuys). “No one wants to deal with the oil companies, but the reality of the situation is you’re gonna have to create a structure that works for everybody. Otherwise, we’re going to continually be in this situation and there will be another spill.” Fed by concerns...
The Biden administration announced on Tuesday it would act alongside five other major economies and release tens of millions of barrels of oil from national stockpiles in a bid to lower prices, as global oil cartel OPEC+ resists significantly boosting production in response to President Joe Biden's urging. The Department of Energy will oversee the release of up to 50 million barrels of crude oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve's four storage sites along the Gulf Coast, which will be made available to private firms for refining or otherwise adding to their own crude reserves. Here's how it will work: DAILY ON ENERGY: FALLOUT FROM BIDEN TAPPING THE SPR How will the Department of Energy distribute the oil? The department will make up to 32 million barrels of crude available to refiners and other companies through its exchange capability, which is functionally a loan repaid with in-kind interest in the form of oil. Exchange oil will be returned to the reserve over the next three years. Up to another 18 million barrels will...
moreby Brandon J. Weichert   Under former President Donald J. Trump, for the first time in decades, the United States became a net exporter of natural gas and oil. That helped to keep global energy prices relatively low. It also gave the United States leverage over the international system in ways it had not enjoyed since before the 1970s. Alas, the propagation of the novel coronavirus from Wuhan, China, along with the ceaseless lies of the Western “mainstream” media made such a prosperous and secure future under Trump an impossibility. In the eight months since assuming office under a cloud of controversy, Joe Biden has done more to harm America’s inherent strategic advantages in the global energy market than any U.S. rival could have imagined. Under Biden, the United States has gone from being a net exporter of global energy to begging the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) to produce more oil for the world to consume. Why? Because the Biden Administration killed the much-needed KeystoneXL Pipeline that would have linked Canadian energy sources with American refiners. Once inaugurated, the Biden Administration’s Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) enacted a bevy of onerous regulations that...
