HOUSTON — It was the definition of a team win for Gang Green. The offense was balanced, and the defense played lights out and the end result was a 21-14 win over the lousy Houston Texans. Zach Wilson had a pedestrian day in his return to action as he went 14-for-24 for 145 yards with a rushing touchdown and an interception. Wilson wasn’t happy with his performance but elated for the victory. “Feels really good,” Wilson said. “I wasn’t happy with how I performed. Just the ups and downs of it all. I gotta just keep going, it’s all part of the process. it feels really good to go home having a win. That’s the goal, to win the game.” It was Wilson’s first game in a month, but the former BYU quarterback refused to blame his lackluster play on rust. “I don’t blame anything on that,” Wilson said. “There’s no excuses. You got to really come out and play well.” Late in the fourth quarter, Wilson appeared to tweak his knee on a scramble...
For a short week, the lead-up to the Chicago Bears’ game against the Detroit Lions on Thursday has had a whole lot of drama. An injury to rookie quarterback Justin Fields and the return of veteran Andy Dalton as the starter. A report that coach Matt Nagy had been told he will be fired after the Thanksgiving game and Nagy’s subsequent denial. And — oh, yeah — the Bears trying to move past a five-game losing streak after giving up game-winning drives in the last minute of the last two games. Now the Bears face the Lions, whose own ongoing drama is that they haven’t won a game since Dec. 6, 2020. The opponent? The Bears. The network said the Patriots versus Tampa Buccaneers contest averaged 28.5 million total viewers on all platforms, including NBC TV and streaming service Peacock. NBC said it was the largest audience since a Dec. 2012 Week 17 contest featuring the Dallas Cowboys and the Washington Football Team, which attracted 30.3 million viewers. The Bucs beat the Patriots 19-17 in a game pitting superstar quarterback Brady against his former team and coach Bill Belichick. SAN FRANCISCO — The Giants could have three key contributors to their first-place season back in the fold soon. Starting pitcher Alex Wood, who was sidelined with symptomatic COVID-19, threw a bullpen before Monday’s game against the Padres at Oracle Park. Giants manager Gabe Kapler said that there was “no roadmap in place “for his return, but with San Francisco down to only three starting pitchers, his return would be a boon. “It’s definitely the first step in a few and the one that’s going to give us a little bit more information about how he’s doing and how much strength he has. How ready he feels to really start pushing,” Kapler said. Wood has started 23 games for the Giants this season, striking out 135 in 125 innings, while pointing a 4.08 ERA. The Giants could also see the return of outfielder Alex Dickerson and second baseman Donovan Solano in the coming days. Both injured Giants sluggers are on rehab assignments with the Giants’ Triple-A team in Sacramento and scored runs in the second game...
OAKLAND — The next three series against teams with losing records will be the Oakland A’s best chance to gain ground in a contentious wild card race. With 22 games left in the regular season, the A’s are tied with the Seattle Mariners two games back of the second wild card spot held by the New York Yankees, who lost six straight heading into Friday’s games. On an eight-game win streak, the Toronto Blue Jays have surged into contention, a half-game back of the Yankees. The Boston Red Sox hold a one-game lead for the first wild card spot. The A’s start this crucial stretch with a big series win over the Chicago White Sox under their belt and will need to go on a run against the Texas Rangers at home, then the Kansas City Royals and Los Angels Angels on the road. The Rangers landed in Oakland on a four-game winning streak, but are one of two teams — along with the Baltimore Orioles — to be officially eliminated from postseason contention with a .367 winning...

Supporters of Nice had waited two years to be allowed back into the stadium to see their team take on Marseille in one of France’s footballing rivalries. Now it’s their violent conduct, rather than the pandemic, that could see the turnstiles locked again. There were 15 minutes remaining in Sunday’s French league match when a plastic bottle was hurled at Marseille star Dimitri Payet. The winger was enraged, hurling it back into the stand behind the goal. Fans then surged onto the field to confront Payet and his Marseille teammates, leading to a wider brawl before the game was first suspended and then abandoned. The French government said Monday that a red line was crossed with the unrest. “There can be no tolerance for such acts,” Roxana Maracineanu and Jean-Michel Blanquer, the French ministers in charge of sports, said in a joint statement. There was no such immediate clear condemnation from the French league, which only summoned Nice and Marseille to a meeting of its disciplinary committee on Wednesday. Criminal proceedings are moving at a faster pace. French prosecutors...
Hot news [Top 50] # 1: Patrick Mahomes, already the biggest Roger Goodell should acknowledge the arrival of Daniel Snyder A different aspect of Washington’s fine on Thursday comes from the owner’s position Daniel Snyder. The press release announcing the $ 10 million fine and other financial penalties explains that co-owner Tanya Snyder will manage day-to-day operations and represent the team indefinitely at league meetings. The league and team insist the move is voluntary. In other words, Daniel Snyder is sidelined and avoids the contempt of official suspension. He has no choice but to volunteer to avoid another scandal and raise the issue a little more. This view is reinforced by a new expression Washington Post This confirms that Commissioner Roger Goodell “must recognize the return of Daniel Snyder to daily control.” Contradictory version of the owner’s lawyer, Jordan Sieve. “Any suggestion that Commissioner Goodell should acknowledge Don Snyder’s return to daily control is wrong,” Shiv told ESPN.com’s Adam Schaefer. “Dan has not been suspended, so by definition he should not be re-appointed under any circumstances.” In...

More On: chicago cubs Adbert Alzolay will prove reliable in this NL matchup World Series champion will have successful Wrigley return Veteran pitcher makes Cubs the pick in this one Bet on the veteran pitcher in this NL Central showdown That’s what friends are for. Cubs star Kris Bryant made former teammate Kyle Schwarber feel right at home when he returned to Wrigley Field on Monday — his first time as a visitor since Chicago non-tendered him in the offseason. Schwarber signed a one-year, $10 million contract with the Nationals. After receiving a warm welcome — including tribute videos and cheers and ovations from Cubs fans — Schwarber found a Twix bar in left field, courtesy of Bryant. The gesture between the starting left fielders was caught on camera by fans in the bleachers, who had fun with the surprise gift. It turns out that Bryant’s in-game present gave Schwarber an advantage at the plate. He drilled a two-run homer to center field on a 93-mph pitch off Adbert Alzolay. The fourth-inning blast cut the Cubs’...

After putting on a monster performance in a 123-110 home win over the Suns on Sunday, the big man said he’s having “fun” as the Lakers fight to escape the NBA’s play-in tournament. If the play-in were to begin today, the seventh-seeded Lakers would occupy the first slot, as the tournament will include matchups between the No. 7 through 10 seeds in each conference for a chance at a playoff berth. “We were a great team last year, and this is the first time since I’ve been here that we ran into a challenge. This is a different challenge for us,” Davis said, according to ESPN. In Sunday’s win, Davis became the first Laker in history to record at least 42 points,...
In Marcus Semien’s anticipated return to Oakland with his new team, his old team stole the show. The A’s took the first of this four game series against the Toronto Blue Jays, 5-4, on Monday night at the Coliseum. The A’s move to 7-2 in one-run games. The A’s played a video tribute for Semien before first pitch, and the sparse crowd — that included his family and friends — gave the Bay Area native a warm ovation. Semien, who spent six years with the A’s from 2015 to 2020, collected a hit and a walk in his first game at the Coliseum since he donned green and gold. Ramón Laureano’s two-run home run in the third inning gave the A’s a 5-3 lead and marked Laureano’s third straight game with a home run. His sixth home run of the season was the A’s second of the game — Stephen Piscotty’s two-run home run in the second inning, adding on to an RBI double from Jed Lowrie, gave the A’s an early 3-0 lead in the third inning. ...
Two years removed from a devastating injury, the 26-year-old WNBA and EuroLeague star has made a case to be women's basketball's greatest of all time. Mary Holt-USA TODAY Sports Breanna Stewart won the 2021 EuroLeague title and earned Final Four MVP honors this weekend. Six months before, she won WNBA Finals MVP during the Seattle Storm's 2020 championship run. Both feats came after Stewart's tore her Achilles, which cast doubt on her future in basketball. Visit Insider's homepage for more stories. On April 14, 2019, Breanna Stewart suffered one of the most gruesome injuries a competitive athlete can sustain. Since then, she's defied logic and expectations by posting one of the most impressive years in all of athletics. On Sunday — almost two years to the day after tearing her Achilles tendon during the 2019 EuroLeague final — the 6-foot-4 superstar led UMMC Ekaterinburg to the 2021 EuroLeague title. With 14.5 points, seven rebounds, and three assists per game throughout the tournament, Stewart earned Final Four MVP honors on her way to her first championship in an overseas...

While Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid definitely showed signs of rust in his first live game action in more than three weeks, they were few and far between. After missing his team’s last 10 games with a left knee bone bruise, Embiid was finally back in the fold as the Sixers played host to Karl-Anthony Towns and the Minnesota Timberwolves on Saturday. The New York Rangers blank Boston in Artemi Panarin’s return By: Jim Bay March 13, 2021 ShareTweetFlipRedditThe New York Rangers finally got the total 60 minutes of complete play that head coach David Quinn wanted. The Rangers scored in each of the three periods in defeating the Bruins 4-0. The game also saw the return of Artemi Panarin, who had missed the past nine games for personal reasons. The Rangers got goals from K’Andre Miller, Chris Kreider, Pavel Buchnevich, and Ryan Strome. Mika Zibanejad had two assists. Panarin got an assist on Strome’s goal, but it was obvious that his presence gave the Rangers a huge emotional boost after losing three straight games. Kreider continues to be one of the main contributors to the Blueshirts. Per NYR Stats&Info, Kreider’s nine goals since Feb. 24 are the most in the NHL over the span. His 13 points over the span are the third-most in the NHL. Keith Kinkaid made 18 saves for the shutout victory. He earned his first win since Oct....
The Atlanta Braves got to Game 7 of the NLCS without staff ace Mike Soroka. With his healthy return, they’re World Series contenders The most important pitch of the 2020 season for the Atlanta Braves was thrown in their 11th game. On Aug. 3, during a Monday night game against the New York Mets at Truist Park, staff ace Mike Soroka induced a groundball from J.D. Davis and raced over to cover first base. “I think these guys always want to get better. Max has continued to grow,” Snitker said earlier in spring training. “The maturity and what he’s done, I mean Max is going to be a guy that’s going to put himself in Cy Young conversations probably for the rest of his career. He’s come a long way.” If everything goes well in Soroka’s recovery, Fried won’t have to do it by himself this season. The Braves, with a stacked lineup that includes reigning NL MVP Freddie Freeman, Ronald Acuna, and Marcell Ozuna, proved how far they could go last season. A healthy Soroka will help get them...
New York's basketball-starved NBA fans got a taste of normalcy amid the pandemic on Tuesday night as roughly 2,300 total spectators witnessed games at Madison Square Garden and Barclays Center for the first time in nearly a year. Governor Andrew Cuomo recently loosened coronavirus restrictions on indoor sporting events, approving crowds at 10 percent capacity while requiring that all staff and spectators receive a negative COVID-19 test and provide documentation within 72 hours of the game. The Brooklyn Nets were even more prudent for Tuesday's win over the Sacramento Kings, welcoming only 300 fans at 17,700-seat Barclays Center, sending out at-home testing kits, and administering a nasal swab for antigen rapid testing at the gate.  Meanwhile in Manhattan, 2,000 COVID-free fans got an extra dose of familiarity as the Knicks blew a big second-half lead in a loss to Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors.   'The Knicks almost won, but it wouldn't have been a Knicks game if they didn't lose,' fan Ben Soffer told the New York Post on Tuesday night. Fans arrive early prior to the...

Brooklyn’s Big 3 was two-thirds of the way back. Newly minted All-Star starter Kyrie Irving returned to the Nets’ lineup Thursday to face LeBron James and the Lakers after missing the last game with lower-back tightness. Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot (right knee soreness) was also back after sitting out the come-from-behind win in Phoenix. However, Kevin Durant missed a third consecutive game with a hamstring injury, and coach Steve Nash offered no timetable for the star forward’s return. “What they want to see is improved strength,” Nash said. “Usually when you have a little injury like this, there’s a strength deficit, and until you have that strength back, it’s not necessarily safe to resume play. So there’s a few progressions he’s got to meet. “Other than that, we’ve just got to monitor it and see how it goes. The positive thing is he’s had a few days of rest now and is improving. But there’s no timeline still on when we’ll see him again.” Durant — averaging 29.0 points and 7.3 rebounds — missed the wins over Sacramento and Phoenix. He’s only...

Jeremy Lin didn’t do anything to disqualify himself from a return to the NBA in his G-League debut Wednesday. But his performance, juxtaposed with those of his teammates and opponents, showed that Lin still has a lot to prove if he wants to make it back to the big leagues. Let’s be clear: Lin was solid and gritty in his 30 minutes against the G-League Ignite team, scoring 18 points, dishing out five assists, and adding three steals. That’s a really nice game, especially when you consider how long it’s been since he’s played that many minutes in a truly competitive league. Could he be a solid contributor to an NBA team right now? Wednesday’s performance made me think so. Then again, I’ve been watching Brad Wanamaker play for the Warriors — you can’t convince me Lin wouldn’t be better. But a nice, solid, gritty performance isn’t the kind of game that will get Lin back into the league. Related Articles Jeremy Lin solid in NBA G League debut but Santa Cruz...
With the Kansas City Chiefs now through to the AFC Championship game, the question on everyone’s mind is whether Patrick Mahomes will be fit for next week.  The star quarterback took a hit in the 3rd quarter of the Divisional game against the Cleveland Browns and went off the pitch to be evaluated for a concussion. He stayed out for the rest of the game as he failed to clear a concussion protocol conducted by medical professionals on the pitch.   The NFL has a strict policy when it comes to evaluating players with concussions. The current rules require an extensive list of check-ups before a player is cleared to take the field again.  What is the current concussion protocol in the NFL? The league has dedicated spotters to keep an eye out for moments where players pick up suspected concussions.  The player is then escorted to the locker room to get checked by an independent neurotrauma evaluator who is assigned to each franchise by the NFL. The evaluator conducts a series of examinations which include cognitive and balance tests.  If...

You don’t win five titles in a year without a radical change in your gameplay. Andrey Rublev has seen a meteoric rise in 2020. He won five titles and ended the year ranked 8th. But what made him the most improved in 2020? Andrey Rublev in action during his group stage match against Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas. REUTERS/Toby Melville The answer is his increased pedigree of winning his service games and return games. In 2019, he won just a single tournament. His service wasn’t polished enough, and his ability to pounce on the opponent hadn’t matured. But in 2020 there is a monumental rise. His service game win percentage has increased substantially. He is serving more accurately and it is becoming harder to break. Moving over to his return games, there too we can see a significant rise with respect to 2019. What is surprising is that he has improved a lot on the clay as well. It is harder to hold serve on clay but he still has a healthy average among his peers. And his return game win percentage...
The current season in Fortnite has been nothing short of a huge hit, with almost all of Earth’s mightiest heroes fighting it out on the map. Epic Games has been pretty regular with updating the game, usually once every two weeks or so. Almost two weeks have passed since the last major update, and data miners have already unearthed clues to an upcoming update. Note that Epic themselves have not released an official statement regarding this one. Without further ado, here is everything you can expect to see in the game in the upcoming weeks. Upcoming months in Fortnite: What to expect? Of course, the first upcoming update is Fortnitemares, a yearly event that takes place around Halloween. This is a pretty obvious item on the list since it isn’t particularly new. So, what happens is players fight hordes of undead zombie-like creatures called ‘husks’. These husks appear on various locations throughout the map and killing them during BR gameplay is the primary objective. Since last year, Fortnitemares has included a boss fight that required players to team up for....
After being held out of the starting lineup for the last seven games due to a right calf strain, Mike Yastrzemski will lead off and play right field against the San Diego Padres in Game 1 of a doubleheader on Friday. Yastrzemski spent the early portion of the week playing catch, hitting in the cage and running the bases and was finally able to come off the bench as a pinch-hitter in Thursday’s 5-4, 11-inning loss to the Rockies. The second-year outfielder’s availability to start against the Padres provides the Giants with a much-needed reinforcement for a team that’s lost four of its last seven games. “It wasn’t an ideal situation to go down in the timeframe that I did, so I wanted to get back as soon as possible, but at the same time be smart about it, because I want to be able to play a few more weeks not a few more days,” Yastrzemski said. Yastrzemski has been one of the Giants’ most valuable players this season and is a front-runner to win...
Johnny Boychuk’s leadership was on full display in his return last night for the Islanders By: Rob Taub September 16, 2020 ShareShareTweetA lot of people were waiting for Johnny Boychuk to make his return for the New York Islanders. It finally came last night. After he had not suited up since game one of the qualifying round against the Florida Panthers, where he suffered a concussion after taking a high hit from Florida’s Mike Matheson, Boychuk finally got the call from head coach Barry Trotz to go back into the lineup. Boychuk didn’t disappoint in his first game back, which just happened to be the biggest of the postseason for his team; the Islanders were appearing in game five of the Eastern Conference Finals trailing the series 3-1to the Tampa Bay Lightning. In only the fashion he knows how, the 16-year vet led by example with a throwback, workman-like performance as the Isles forced game a six with a 2-1 win in double-overtime on a Jordan Eberle goal. “He brings a...

It went like so: © Associated Press Leadoff single to Marcus Semien; Seven-pitch walk to Ramón Laureano; Five-pitch walk to Matt Chapman to load the bases; Five-pitch walk to Matt Olson to score Semien; Nine pitches to Mark Canha, resulting in a two-run single; Two pitches to Robbie Grossman, scoring Olson. Shohei Ohtani, Los Angeles Angels. (Photo by Ezra Shaw/Getty Images) Someone else should pitch for the Los Angeles Angels besides Shohei Ohtani. Please send Shohei Ohtani an angel because good Lord, he was terrible on the mound Sunday. Fate would have it on Opening Weekend in a coronavirus-shortened, 60-game MLB season that Ohtani would make his triumphant return to the mound for the Los Angeles Angels. Ohtani hadn’t pitched for the big league club since his first year with the team in 2018. He was 4-2 with a 3.31 ERA in 10 starts for the Angels the last time around. Too bad he was an on-field atrocity Sunday. Ohtani threw 30 pitches, only 15 were strikes. He walked three batters, allowed three hits and surrendered five earned runs as the Angels’ starting pitcher vs. the division rival Oakland Athletics Sunday. He was so rancid on the mound that Ohtani got yanked by skipper Joe Maddon before he even recorded an out. Ohtani was so bad he doesn’t have an ERA or it’s hidden behind a paywall. ESPN reporter Nick DePaula, Los Angeles Tourism & Convention Board Member Wells Phillips, podcast host Travonne Edwards, and former Slam Magazine reporter Drew Ruiz have been compiling pics and clips from players' social media accounts over the last week. In doing so, the group has created a contemporaneous history of players' lives during quarantine. 'This project has helped me mentally to have an escape,' Phillips told the Times. 'I get some fun versus six hours a day of seeing negativity. The timing has...
The A’s looked to be the lucky ones, spared a significant injury that could dent a team looking to make a postseason run again — this time around, with its full shelf of young talent ready to go. Monday, that precarious streak of luck came to an end with news that prized left-hander A.J. Puk re-strained his left shoulder — the same injury Puk incurred early March in Arizona — and was placed on the 10-day injured list. Shoulder flare ups are common among pitchers recovering from Tommy John — or so, that’s what many TJ survivors have told Puk. “It’s frustrating. It’s frustrating for him, too,” manager Bob Melvin said. “We thought this period of time off would benefit him. It did up until a point.” Puk has no timetable for return, and any update will come following his meeting with Dr. ElAttrache. But, the A’s are concerned. “The fact we have to put him on the (IL) right away, there’s a level of concern,” Melvin said. The A’s have a line of pitchers who can squeeze into the...

Every National Women's Soccer League player starting in the first professional American team sports game Saturday kneeled during the playing of the national anthem. Players from both teams — the NC Courage and Portland Thorns — wore Black Lives Matter shirts during warm-ups. The players then took the field and once again kneeled for a moment of silence for victims of police brutality while wearing black armbands in support of the Black Lives Matter movement. The Thorns and the Courage issued a joint statement before kickoff to explain the players' decision to kneel during the anthem. Visit Insider's homepage for more stories.
