SACRAMENTO — California fully reopened its economy this week. Now, key pandemic-era rules about getting unemployment benefits are changing. Here are some details:What is changing? Starting next month, Californians who receive unemployment benefits will have to show that they are looking for work, a requirement that the state waived last year when COVID-19 led to economic upheaval. Claimants for unemployment benefits must start job hunting by July 11 so they can attest that they are doing so when certifying their eligibility a week later with the state Employment Development Department, the agency announced Thursday. To show they are looking for work, unemployment benefit recipients can create an account at the state’s CalJOBS website and post a profile on various job search sites, said Rita Saenz, director of the EDD. They can also apply for suitable jobs or let prior employers and community members know they are looking for work to satisfy the requirement. For those who are gig workers or are self-employed and get benefits from the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance program, the EDD is providing other ways to show they...
California’s Employment Development Department says that starting July 11, 2021 anyone receiving unemployment benefits must start looking for work – a return to the rules that applied before March 2020 when the federal government let states suspend the requirement. Here’s what looking for work means in California. Note that it differs a bit depending on whether a worker is receiving regular unemployment benefits or Pandemic Unemployment Assistance. For those collecting regular unemployment benefits, the agency offers this guidance: Examples of reasonable efforts to search for suitable work each week include activities such as: • Prepare for Job Searches – Set up an account on CalJOBS, participate in reemployment services, post a profile on various job search or networking sites. • Expand Networks – Let friends, prior employers, or community members know you are looking for work. Participate in networking, job fair events or clubs. • Apply for Suitable Work – Apply for positions with employers reasonably expected to have suitable openings matching skills and experience, including government jobs and exams. • Participate in Training – Engage in permissible education and...
A member of President Joe Biden’s Council of Economic Advisors said Tuesday that governors ending federal unemployment insurance is a mistake and warned that Americans will face increased economic hardship as a result. “I do think it’s the wrong decision,” Jared Bernstein said on “Bloomberg Surveillance.” He warned that states’ decisions to no longer participate in federal unemployment insurance programs would increase economic hardship for residents and labor market outcomes would not change regardless of the move to cease benefits. (RELATED: Biden Directly Confronts Republicans’ Accusations That Unemployment Benefits Keep People Unemployed) Alabama plans to end its participation “in all federally funded pandemic unemployment compensation programs” on June 19, which include $300 checks to Americans, Republican Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey announced in a Monday press release. Mississippi, Montana, North Dakota, South Carolina and Arkansas will also stop taking part in the unemployment programs, according to various statements from states’ governors. President Joe Biden on Monday said that anyone taking unemployment who gets offered a 'suitable job' must take it after experts revealed that people making $32,000 before COVID could now earn more from benefits. 'We're going to make it clear that anyone collecting unemployment, who is offered a suitable job must take the job or lose their unemployment benefits,' the president said in remarks at the White House.  'There are a few COVID-19 related exceptions, so that people aren't forced to choose between their basic safety and a paycheck, but otherwise, that's the law,' he added. Biden dismissed claims people could earn more by staying home and collecting unemployment. 'Americans want to work,' he said.  'I think the people claim Americans won't work, even if they find a good and fair opportunity, underestimate the American people,' he added.  He noted that companies that 'provide fair wages and safe work environments' will 'find plenty of workers.' The White House had to defend its extra unemployment benefits on Monday, arguing it was not the main factor keeping people from returning to the...

She said she had spent months looking for a house which accepts housing benefits and everything seemed to be going to plan. The landlord of the property had even agreed to carry out some building work to bring the house up to living standards - so Georgia was feeling optimistic. ...
Professor Neil Ferguson, an epidemiologist at Imperial College London and SAGE adviser, suggested AstraZeneca's coronavirus vaccine may not be suitable for young people AstraZeneca's coronavirus vaccine may not be suitable for young people if its link to blood clots is proven to be true, one of No10's top scientific advisers suggested today. 'Professor Lockdown' Neil Ferguson said older and middle-aged groups should 'very much' get the vaccine because the threat of coronavirus far outweighs the risk of the clots, thought to affect just one in 600,000 people given the jab (0.00017 per cent). But the SAGE epidemiologist, 53, who himself has had AstraZeneca's jab, said the balance of risk is 'slightly more complicated' when younger people who are less vulnerable to the virus are considered. The risk of blood clots from the vaccine may prove to be higher in younger age groups. British scientists say the risk of dying of Covid for 25 to 44-year-olds is 0.04 per cent, and 0.01 per cent for people aged 15 to 24. For comparison, the rate is up to 6 per cent in elderly...
A potential Neptune-to Saturn-sized planet that 'could be suitable for life' has been discovered in the habitable zone of a neighboring star system. The exoplanet, dubbed 'C1,' was spotted in the Alpha Centauri triple star system 4.4 light-years from Earht, which is also home to Alpha Centauri A and B, along with the more famous Proxima Centauri. The discovery was made possible with a newly developed system for mid-infrared exoplanet imaging, in combination with an extremely long observation time – all of which were performed using the Very Large Telescope in Chile. Astronomers were able to reduce unwanted signals that come from the telescope and camera, in the same way noise-cancelling headphone block out certain sounds, allowing them to detect faint signals coming from the potential planet. The new capabilities were developed by a team of international astronomers, in collaboration with the initiative Breakthrough Watch/NEAR, which is a global astronomical program looking for Earth-like planets around nearby stars.  The paper's first author, Kevin Wagner, a Sagan Fellow in NASA's Hubble Fellowship Program at the University of Arizona's Steward Observatory, told...
A NON-invasive prostate cancer treatment billed as the biggest step forward in 20 years is effective, a study has confirmed. Few public hospitals have the equipment and doctors are sceptical due to lack of long-term data. But Imperial College London claims to have gathered enough evidence to support its general use. Professor Hashim Ahmed, a leading prostate cancer expert, said: "Our study has shown that focal therapy carries up to ten-fold reductions in urine leak and sexual problems.
