The first Sunday Night Football game of the year will showcase the Bears vs. Rams. The Bears, instead of starting the rookie quarterback Justin Fields, will start Andy Dalton, the 33-year-old NFL veteran who signed with Chicago back in March after one season with the Cowboys. Dalton started nine games last season in Dallas following the injury to Dak Prescott, throwing 14 touchdowns and 8 interceptions while leading the Cowboys to a 4-5 record in his starts. During the preseason, Bears coach Matt Nagy made it clear that it was always the team’s intention to start Dalton at the beginning of the season, regardless of the two quarterbacks’ performances leading into the first regular season game. They signed the veteran signal caller back in March to a one-year deal at $10.1 million and given his extensive experience as a starter — he started 133 games over nine years with the Bengals from...
LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) — Chicago Bears quarterback Andy Dalton could have defensive lineman Aaron Donald in his face Sunday night against the Los Angeles Rams. While this might terrify many NFL quarterbacks, the real trouble for Dalton might be behind him in the form of Bears backup quarterback Justin Fields as Chicago opens the season at SoFi Stadium. “That’s the worst thing you can do is look over your shoulder,” Dalton said. Bears fans have clamored throughout the preseason for Fields to start, even while the plan all along has been for Dalton to face the Rams. “We’re talking about tuning out the stuff you don’t need to focus on and knowing where you need to put your time and effort and all that kind of stuff,” Dalton said. “I think that’s just where I’m at. You don’t worry about all the other stuff.” The other stuff would be the calls for Fields to play. Dalton was booed by fans during his very limited play in the preseason, but Bears offensive coordinator Bill Lazor thinks...
By Michael Hurley, CBS Boston BOSTON (CBS) — The preseason is over. That is good news for everybody. While the August games are a necessity for player evaluation and roster building, there’s still no questioning the fact that football games that don’t count just don’t have the same juice as the real ones. And when those real games begin, we know at this point that two of the five quarterbacks selected in the top 15 picks of this year’s draft — Trevor Lawrence and Zach Wilson — will be starting for their teams in Week 1. We know another one — Justin Fields — will not be starting. And we think but don’t know that the other two — Trey Lance and Mac Jones — likewise will start the season on the sidelines. However things pan out for the five first-round picks over the course of their respective careers, they’re sure to be linked for some time. And while we can’t predict the future for all of them at this point in time, we can take a look at what they did in the...

Sunday marked the end of the exhibition season in the NFL and now it's full steam ahead towards the regular season. Over these last few weeks, we were able to see a number of young quarterbacks take the field and begin carving out their path in the NFL. For some of the quarterbacks taken in the first round of this most recent draft, the final week of the preseason was their last shot at convincing the coaching staff that they deserve to be the Week 1 starter. Others, meanwhile, are simply polishing up their game before the snaps start to count for real in a few weeks.  © Provided by CBS Sports ARLINGTON, TEXAS - AUGUST 29: Quarterback Trevor Lawrence #16 of the Jacksonville Jaguars looks for an open receivers against the Dallas Cowboys in the first quarter of the NFL preseason game at AT&T Stadium on August 29,...
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Nick Foles threw a 54-yard touchdown pass to Jesper Horsted with 6:51 left, and the Chicago Bears held off the Tennessee Titans 27-24 to wrap the preseason Saturday night. Horsted, a tight end who played at Princeton, finished with three TDs and 104 yards receiving, catching all five passes thrown to him. His first TD came from rookie Justin Fields in his first start with the other two from Foles in the second half. CHICAGO (CBS) — Rookie quarterback Justin Fields will start the Bears’ final preseason game on Saturday, when they visit the Titans, but coach Matt Nagy is sticking with veteran Andy Dalton as the starter to begin the regular season. Nagy said Fields will play the first half Saturday night in Tennessee, and backup Nick Foles will play the second half, while the team rests most of its veteran starters, including Dalton. However, the first-team offensive line will start the game to protect the Bears’ prized rookie. LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) — The Chicago Bears will start rookie quarterback Justin Fields in the preseason finale Saturday at Tennessee against the Titans. Although Fields is starting that game, he still is regarded as the Bears’ backup to veteran Andy Dalton for the regular-season opener against the Los Angeles Rams. “All I want to see from him is just play a good game of football at the quarterback position and again keep the big picture in mind for all of us,” Bears coach Matt Nagy said of Fields before practice Tuesday. Fields will play with some but not all of the offensive starters. Nagy said he’s leaning toward giving the former Ohio State star the chance to play with the Bears’ first-team offensive line, but the receivers could be a mix of reserves and starters. “I think it’s going to be a good opportunity for him and then you know we’ll be selective across the board for the other players as we go, but you’re going to see a direction of more kind of like the old-school fourth preseason...

Their body of work been pretty eye-opening to say the least. All five theoretically could start Week 1, although the Chicago Bears appear poised to start veteran Andy Dalton over Justin Fields initially. Less clear are the situations in San Francisco and New England. But with fantasy, handicapping and real-football implications at stake with all five, we thought we’d update you on where the quintet stands with a little more than two weeks remaining until the start of the regular season. Getty Buffalo Bills linebacker Andre Smith hits Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields in a preseason game. Buffalo Bills linebacker Andre Smith wants Chicago Bears fans to know that he meant no harm with his massive hit on rookie Justin Fields in a preseason game on Saturday — though he did seem to enjoy the attention. Smith came in unblocked on a play to start the fourth quarter, hitting Fields so hard that the rookie quarterback’s helmet and armband were thrown off and he fumbled the ball. Fields was not hurt on the play and Smith was called for a roughing the passer penalty for coming in too high, and the Bills linebacker afterward offered something of a tongue-in-cheek apology to Bears fans mixed with a heavy dose of trolling. Justin Fields had his “welcome to the NFL” moment after this crushing preseason hit. It took only two preseason games, but Justin Fields had his “welcome to the NFL” moment as the rookie quarterback for the Chicago Bears. While he should be the Week 1 starter for the Bears this season, he is backing up veteran signal-caller Andy Dalton for the time being. The Bears were getting thoroughly shellacked by the Buffalo Bills in their second preseason game of the summer when this vicious hit happened to the former Ohio State standout. While fans and analysts will overhype preseason performances, most coaches put more stock into practices than games, especially the joint sessions against other clubs. Fields, the fourth QB selected in the NFL draft at No. 11 overall, was 14 of 20 for 142 yards in just over two quarters of action for Chicago against Miami’s reserves. But really, his reaction should say a lot to everyone who’s following the competition. I talked with Payton a few times about the Jameis Winston/Taysom Hill dynamic over the course of the offseason, and I can remember his reticence to put non-negotiables on what he’d need from his quarterback, because “what if neither of them have that?” He did eventually dive into what he saw as important. “The most important thing is leading this...
BOSTON (CBS) — It’s not often that five quarterbacks get picked in the first 15 selections of the NFL draft. That was, of course, the case this year, with Trevor Lawrence, Zach Wilson, and Trey Lance going 1-2-3, and with Justin Fields (11) and Mac Jones (15) completing the quintet. Perhaps all five quarterbacks will wind up in the Hall of Fame. Perhaps they’ll all be busts. More likely, one or two will thrive and become certifiable stars, one or two will last in the league but won’t reach true greatness, and one or two might become massive disappointments for the franchises that invested so heavily in them. Which ones fit into which categories is anyone’s guess at this point in time. But what has happened thus far is the preseason debut of each first-round QB. Here in New England, we tend to get hyper-focused on the local team, so it’s worth taking a moment to look around at the rest of the rookie QB group to see how Jones’ preseason showing compared. That is, obviously, said with the understanding that preseason stats are...

Getty Will head coach Matt Nagy of the Chicago Bears start Justin Fields or Andy Dalton Week 1? The wait is over. Fans of the Chicago Bears finally got to see rookie quarterback Justin Fields in action, and after a wobbly start, he did not disappoint. In just under two quarters of work, the rookie QB completed 70% of his passes, going 14-of-20 for 142 yards and a touchdown. He also had 33 yards and a score on the ground, exercising good judgment — other than on one play in which he fumbled (Chicago recovered) and neglected to slide. Still, Fields finished with a QB rating of 106.7, and he looked solid overall in his debut. When he was asked about Fields’ performance after Chicago’s 20-13 preseason win over the Miami Dolphins, Bears coach Matt Nagy couldn’t hide his excitement. But when he was asked if veteran Andy Dalton was still going to be the starter over Fields, Nagy did some impressive verbal gymnastics instead of directly answering the question. Biden calls school chiefs, lauds defiance of anti-mask rules Federal judge orders Biden administration to reinstate Remain in Mexico policy For the first couple drives, Chicago Bears fans had an all too familiar experience Saturday. Chicago Bears: Justin Fields impresses in preseason debut Usayd Koshul August 14, 2021 Share on facebook Facebook Share on twitter Twitter Share on reddit Reddit It was a cool summer afternoon at Soldier Field as the Chicago Bears opened up the preseason against the Miami Dolphins. Quarterback Justin Fields made his debut, playing in the second and third quarter, going 14-for-20, 142 yards, combined with one passing touchdown and a rushing touchdown. Fields’ mobility was also on display as the 11th overall pick rushed five times for 33 yards. There’s a lot to digest when it comes to Fields preseason debut. After what appeared to be early jitters, the rookie quarterback slowed down, hitting wide receivers with quick, easy completions before, leading to a 14 point explosion for the Bears in the third quarter. This is just the start for Fields, who will look to improve as the season goes on. What’s noteworthy is that Fields did play more than veteran Andy Dalton, who played just two series and completed just two passes for...

Justin Fields has a lot of good friends in Athens, and stopped by Georgia’s scrimmage to say hello First and foremost, Justin Fields is not transferring back to Georgia, as far as we know.
