No ‘MotorCade’ in the Garden: Cunningham will sit out Knicks-Pistons game Alder Almo October 12, 2021 Share on facebook Facebook Share on twitter Twitter Share on reddit Reddit After two impressive preseason victories, the New York Knicks will head into Wednesday’s game as the overwhelming favorites when they host the Cade Cunningham-less Detroit Pistons. Cunningham, the No.1 overall pick, has yet to see action for the Pistons in the preseason after suffering a mild ankle injury during the training camp. Dwayne Casey earlier said there’s no timetable on Cunningham’s return. And it remains that way heading into a preseason matchup against the rampaging Knicks. “We’re not gonna rush Cade back,” Dwayne Casey said after Tuesday’s practice. “When he comes back, it doesn’t mean he’s ready to go & throw him out there and see what happens. He’s too valuable for us. Whatever it is, we’ll sit down with his team, the medical team, myself, and Troy (Weaver) & map out a plan.” The Pistons will be missing seven players, including Killian Hayes, who...
By Matthew Geagan, CBS Boston BOSTON (CBS) — Celtics basketball is back, albeit a preseason version of Celtics basketball. We still have a little over two weeks before the real thing tips off. For now, we’ll have to overreact to what we see in Boston’s four preseason tilts. And overreact we will, because Monday night’s opener was a pretty exciting one. The Celtics gave Ime Udoka a win in his first game on the Boston bench, and it was a thrilling one at that. The C’s made a spirited comeback over the Orlando Magic at TD Garden on Monday night, with Romeo Langford making a steal and knocking down a game-winning three with 14.2 seconds left in the game. Celtics reserves erased a 10-point Magic lead with 5:45 to play and walked off the floor with a 98-97 victory. The ending was fun, but getting there will give Udoka and his staff plenty to discuss with the team leading up to Saturday’s second preseason game. For starters, Udoka wasn’t too thrilled with his team shooting just 35 percent on the...

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — Oklahoma coach Lincoln Riley understands why there is so much buzz surrounding his second-ranked Sooners. He just doesn’t care. “Whatever they say in preseason, we all know it’s a bunch of garbage,” he said. “It doesn’t matter until we can stop reading and talking and actually play. Go look at preseason rankings through the years and then go look at postseason. It’s just a guess.” It’s actually an educated guess. Oklahoma’s high-powered offense returns preseason All-America quarterback Spencer Rattler and plenty of other talent from a 9-2 squad that beat Florida in the Cotton Bowl. That’s why the Sooners have the program’s highest preseason ranking since 2011. Oklahoma gets its first test when the Sooners host Tulane on Saturday in a season-opening contest that was moved from New Orleans because of Hurricane Ida. Riley said his team is ready. “I like the way we’ve prepared,” he said. “I feel like we’re ready to play, we’re ready to go play somebody else, ready to see what this young team is going to look like early in...

The 49ers and Raiders resumed their preseason series Sunday after a 10-year hiatus due to fan violence. But for the teams’ exhibition finale, even the mild tension on the field outweighed that in the stands at Levi’s Stadium in the 49ers’ 34-10 win. Lt. Cuong Phan of the Santa Clara Police Department told this news organization that his department made 17 arrests at the game, mostly related to intoxication and that there were “no known major incidents” related to fan violence. The 49ers blew out the Raiders, who left most of their starting offensive and defensive lineups back in Las Vegas. In 2011, when the Raiders were still based in Oakland, the running preseason series was discontinued between the cross-bay rivals after two shootings and a bathroom beating tied to that year’s edition of the game, which was played mere months after Giants fan Bryan Stow was beaten into a coma outside Dodger Stadium. The 25 most memorable TV pets Rude Money Habits You Need To Break Now © Provided by NBC Sports Replay Video SETTINGS OFF HD HQ SD LO Skip Ad Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray was not happy with the way the first-team offense played against the Chiefs last weekend. The Cardinals went three-and-out three times while Murray was in the game and the quarterback finished 1-of-4 for two yards through the air. That’s not the kind of crisp performance that anyone in Arizona wants to see come the regular season, but seeing Murray and company do better in the preseason isn’t an imperative for head coach Kliff Kingsbury. Kingsbury said on Tuesday that Murray does not “need” to play against the Saints after failing to catch fire against Kansas City. “It wasn’t what we expect and we weren’t as sharp as we’d like to be, but we know what we are capable of and the offense understands the expectations,” Kingsbury said, via the team’s website. Murray has expressed his distaste for preseason football this summer, so he’ll likely be fine...
BOSTON (CBS) — Mac Jones looked pretty darn good in his NFL debut last week, and the rookie was solid once again in his second preseason game for the Patriots on Thursday night. Jones again came off the bench in relief of Cam Newton, who was also stellar Thursday night against the Eagles. Newton likely solidified his spot as New England’s starter with his performance, but Jones continues to make Patriots fans feel good about the future at the most important position in the game. Jones was under center for four series in Philadelphia, completing 13 of his 19 passes for 146 yards. While he mostly delivered check-down strikes last week against Washington, he opened things up a bit more against the Eagles. He also looked like a cool customer in the pocket for the second straight week. Here’s how the rookie quarterback did in each of his four series in preseason game No. 2. Mac’s First Drive Jones took over with 11:14 left in the second quarter and the Patriots up 13-0. He played with the backup receivers and...
BOSTON (CBS) — The Patriots practiced with the Philadelphia Eagles twice this week, and now the two teams will clash in a preseason tilt in Philly on Thursday night. In this new three-game preseason, Thursday’s game is the most important of the games that don’t count. Most of the important work was put in on the practice field on Monday and Tuesday, with both Patriots quarterbacks having up and down days on Monday before the team focused on red zone work on Tuesday. Now, they’ll take all of that to the field on Thursday night in an important dress rehearsal for the regular season. Here’s what we’ll be watching for when the Patriots and the Eagles kick things off Thursday night in Philadelphia. Does Cam Look Better? Newton got two series in the first preseason game, and other than hitting Jonnu Smith on a nice crossing route, he looked a lot like the Cam Newton of last season. His throws were nothing special, he held on to the ball forever, and he nearly fumbled one away when Chase Young blew...
The 20 best British crime films 10 Post-Pandemic Stocks To Add to Your Portfolio Hopefully, the rest of the NFL preseason will be better than the Hall of Fame Game.  Our first look at football in many months wasn't pretty. The Pittsburgh Steelers beat the Dallas Cowboys 16-3 last week in what can kindly be called a forgettable game. But at least it was football.  On Thursday, the preseason continues with two games. The spreads at BetMGM: Washington Football Team (-2) vs. New England Patriots, and Philadelphia Eagles (-1) vs. Pittsburgh Steelers.  Betting on preseason football involves either a ton of research into coaches' tendencies and the bottoms of training camp rosters, or pure luck. For instance, knowing that the new wave of coaches like Sean McVay of the Los Angeles Rams don't want to use any starters in the preseason is important information.  In the first game of the night, both coaches have a good preseason record. Bill Belichick of the Patriots is 46-36 in the preseason, and 6-2 over the last two preseasons (all records from Walter...

Samuel was placed on the physically unable to perform list with a groin injury to open camp and then landed on the COVID-19 reserve list a short time later. He remains on both lists and head coach Ron Rivera said Sunday that there’s no plan in place for when he’ll be activated. Rivera also said that there’s not cause for alarm about the missed time because of Samuel’s familiarity with the offense from his time with Rivera and offensive coordinator Scott Turner in Carolina. “There’s no timetable for Curtis,” Rivera said, via a transcript provided by the team. “He’s been in the system, he knows it. Yeah, you’d love for him to catch...
CANTON, Ohio (AP) — If you’re looking for stars during Hall of Fame enshrinement week, concentrate on the museum itself and the inductions this weekend. You won’t find many, if any, stars playing Thursday night when the NFL preseason begins with Dallas playing Pittsburgh. READ MORE: Family Searching For Award-Winning Horse Stolen From Property In Butler County Indeed, with the number of preseason games reduced from four to three, with the exception of the Cowboys and Steelers, the opportunity to see the big names on the field will be diminished further. For Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy, the Hall of Fame game carries importance as a trial for guys on the back end of the roster, and for backups at key positions. “The fact that we’re playing the four games this year, Week 1 and Week 4 will be huge games for the younger players. You’re looking at a good half of football,” says McCarthy, whose first season with Dallas was a 6-10 fiasco marred by key injuries and indifferent performances. “To me, this is what the preseason has always been...

Stanford is receiving plenty of attention during the preseason with Tara VanDerveer on the verge of passing the late Pat Summitt as the winningest coach in women's basketball. But the Cardinal are also hoping the spotlight will be on them at the end of the season. The Cardinal return nine players and were picked by league coaches and media to win the Pac-12 Conference regular-season crown for the first time in seven seasons. They are also ranked second in The Associated Press Top 25, their highest preseason ranking in 11 years. VanDerveer needs five wins to surpass Summitt's mark of 1,098 wins. Providing no games are canceled, that could occur in mid-December. “I know she has four or five wins until she gets the record, but I know she has bigger goals than that,” said guard Kiana Williams, who led the team in scoring last season, averaging 15.0 points per game. In the first preseason poll as part of the NAIA’s transition from two divisions to one central division, the women’s basketball program at Shawnee State was selected to finish ninth overall in the NAIA Women’s Basketball Preseason Coaches Poll Wednesday morning, according to a release put out by national officials. Shawnee State, who garnered 437 points in the NAIA Preseason Poll, loses Mid-South Conference Player of the Year and NAIA First-Team All-American Bailey Cummins but returns six of its top-eight scorers, three of its four leading rebounders, and 10 letterwinners overall from a unit that went 29-4 overall during the 2019-20 season and won its fifth conference championship in six seasons. Leading the group of returnees is Brandie Snow, who joined Cummins on the First-Team All-MSC unit and earned NAIA Honorable Mention All-American honors to boot in 2020. Snow, the reigning Mid-South Conference Tournament Most Valuable Player, is the team’s returning leader in nine different categories, including points (498), points per game (15.1), rebounds (192), rebounds per game (5.8), assists (92), assists per game (2.8), steals (96), steals per game...
The Preseason AP Top 25 Poll will forever be a reference point of what could have been for the nine teams listed that will not play college football in 2020.   Ohio State — ranked No. 2 in that poll — will wonder what could have been the most. Those feelings are going to linger longer in Columbus than anywhere else, too.   The Buckeyes had what coach Ryan Day said was a “once-in-a-lifetime-team” after the Big Ten made the decision to postpone its fall football season. That team featured the lone returning Heisman Trophy finalist in quarterback Justin Fields along with the typical four- and five-star supporting cast that dominated the Big Ten the past three seasons.   MORE: SN’s reshuffled Top 25 Clemson — which is ranked No. 1 — needed to rally from a 16-0 deficit to pull out a 29-23 win in the College Football Playoff semifinals last season. This was supposed to be Fields’ chance to build up toward a rematch with Trevor Lawrence.   Ohio State won’t get that chance now. Not after Fields led an online petition that cleared more than 300,000 signatures. Not after...
No Preseason Games Will Crush Longshots’ NFL Dreams By: John Fennelly July 21, 2020 Follow ESM On Social Facebook Twitter Youtube Flipboard Instagram ShareTweet0 SharesThe NFL and the NFLPA have agreed. There will be n preseason games this summer. That is both good news and bad news at the same time. In recent years, the preseason has been loathed by everyone from coaches and players to fans and gamblers. The four-game ramp-up suddenly became an exercise of both caution and recklessness with the three of the four games being used to whittle down the roster while one game – usually Week 3 – was played as a dress rehearsal for the regular season. But in this age of the coronavirus, necessity has become the mother of invention. Americans are figuring out how to get what they need done within the restrictions handed down by their respective municipalities. The NFL is no different. The preseason is 75% meaningless to 90% of its participants, so why risk playing it. The website Rotowire made...
Getty The Minnesota Vikings' preseason has been cut in half along with the rest of the NFL. It’s official. The Minnesota Vikings preseason has been cut in half. Along with the rest of the NFL, the Vikings’ Week 1 and Week 4 games have been scrapped against the Houston Texans and Seattle Seahawks respectively, following an announcement Thursday, according to ESPN. Teams are still scheduled to show up for training camp on July 28, but further precautions have been imposed as the NFL continues to plan for the 2020 season amid the coronavirus pandemic. Each team will play one home game and one on the road, although adjustments have yet to be made. Visiting teams will travel the day before games. The joint-decision between the NFL and NFL Players Association (NFLPA) comes following the cancellation of the Hall of Fame Game, which is the annual season opener of the preseason, between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Dallas Cowboys. Players approved of the decision given they will need more time to get into football shape after no rookie training...
