NYON, Switzerland (AP) — An investigation into alleged racist abuse by thousands of children against a Black player at a Europa League game was closed by UEFA on Friday for lack of evidence. Rangers midfielder Glen Kamara appeared to be booed by young Sparta Prague fans two weeks ago though the Czech club denied and pushed back on the claims. “The investigation has now concluded that there was insufficient evidence of racism or discriminatory conduct at the match to warrant the opening of disciplinary proceedings,” UEFA said in a statement. The game was played in front of about 10,000 fans aged from six to 14 as part of a punishment UEFA imposed on Sparta for racist abuse of a Black opponent in a previous game this season. Tensions were raised for Rangers’ visit to the Czech Republic because Kamara was racially abused by a player from Sparta’s city rival, Slavia Prague, at a Europa League game in Scotland last season. In that case, UEFA banned Slavia’s Ondrej Kudela for 10 games in its competitions forcing the 34-year-old defender to miss...
NYON, Switzerland (AP) — UEFA opened investigations Tuesday into allegations of racist abuse by Czech children and antisemitism by German fans at Europa League games. Thousands of young fans booed Rangers midfielder Glen Kamara, who is Black, during the team’s visit to Sparta Prague last Thursday. However, Sparta denies allegations of racism. Union Berlin already apologized for “shameful and intolerable” abuse by its fans targeted at fans of Israeli club Maccabi Haifa on the same evening. UEFA opened disciplinary cases against the two clubs but gave no timetable for its decisions. Sparta was due to host Rangers in an empty stadium because of previous racist abuse by its fans of an opponent’s Black player. That was in August at a Champions League qualifying game. UEFA instead allowed thousands of children up to the age of 14 to attend last week’s game in Prague. Rangers believe Kamara was a target because of an incident in the Europa League last season when he was racially abused by a player from Sparta’s city rival Slavia Prague. That player, defender Ondrej Kudela, was...
PRAGUE (AP) — Czech Foreign Minister Jakub Kulhanek asked the British ambassador to Prague on Monday to request the Scottish soccer association distance itself from its advisor Marvin Bartley or apologize for his words. Kulhanek summoned Nick Archer following widespread criticism in Scotland of the behaviour of thousands of young Sparta Prague supporters who repeatedly booed Rangers midfielder Glen Kamara in Thursday’s Europa League game in Prague. Bartley, who is the advisor on equality and diversity, said he was not shocked by that. “In no way is this the fault of the CHILDREN because they’re behaving in a way they see adults do/encourage. What chance do they have when placed in a bowl with rotten fruit,” he tweeted. Kulhanek told the ambassador such a “scandalous comparison” angered the Czechs. He said that emotions linked to a game, must not turn into “xenophobic insults aimed at underaged children.” Regular fans were banned at Sparta’s stadium for the Czech club’s 1-0 victory because of previous racist behavior, but UEFA allowed the host to have the support of some 10,000 schoolchildren aged 6-14....
