SANTA ROSA (KPIX) — COVID-19 has changed the way holiday toy drives operate and one effort in the North Bay is using the lessons learned from the pandemic to reach more kids than ever. Santa Rosa’s Railroad Square was feeling the holiday spirit Saturday morning. At the Sonoma Marin Area Rail Transit station, volunteers were collecting toys at a drive-through event and SMART’s brand-new general manager, Eddy Cummins, got to play Santa’s helper his first week on the job. “Lots of people out here and, like I said, we’re making a difference in the community and that’s what it’s all about,” he said. It was SMART’s 6th annual Holiday Express toy drive. They used to decorate one of their trains and collect toys at the stations but “COVID changed that for everybody and it takes a village to put on a toy drive during COVID,” said event coordinator Susan Barnes. NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — There was a sense of normalcy in Hamilton Heights for hundreds of children of first responders Saturday. A new kind of giveaway brought them holiday cheer at a time it’s needed most. In a year filled with little joy, there were big smiles peeking from behind the windows of cars lining Riverbank State Park. FDNY firefighter and mom of five Kinga Mielnik says the drive-thru toy giveaway gave her and her boys much more than just basketballs and action figures. “I’m here to celebrate, I’m here to have a good time and to finally have some normalcy,” Mielnik told CBS2’s Christina Fan. DENVER (CBS4)– What a day it was in Lakewood and Arvada where toys flowed from the hearts of donors to the kids of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Metro Denver. About 81 boxes and bins were being sorted through on Friday night at the warehouse that serves as a sort of North Pole for toys. (credit: CBS) “I’m a single mom and I remember what it’s like to struggle,” said Carla Cordova of Wheat Ridge. She has been through times when there wasn’t much to give her kids and remembers the days when she was a child, when money was scarce. “My mom had to do it when we were young.” Things are going a little better now for her at a time when she knows many others are hurting. “And I have a little bit more. Not wealthy by any means, but I’m able to help when I can… It’s just all about the kids…” (credit: CBS) Others told their own stories of a hard year, yet brought something for children who might not have much this year....
DENVER (CBS4) – CBS4 is holding its annual Together 4 Colorado Toy Drive Collection at two King Soopers stores, the one on West Alameda at Belmar in Lakewood, and the other will be at 80th and Sheridan in Arvada. The collection runs from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. All the toys go to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Denver and they need 8,000 to make sure every one of their members gets something this Christmas. “Maybe for some people who don’t have a lot of money for their kids to get toys, I think that the club is very kind to give us stuff,” said Starlynn, a 5th grader from the Bronco’s Boys & Girls Club. (credit CBS) The Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Denver run more than 20 clubs throughout the Metro Area. On a regular day, each of those clubs will see 200 members come through the doors after school. The clubs are open now at about a quarter of the capacity. At the beginning of the pandemic, the clubs had to close, and for...
CHICAGO (CBS) — Santa and a church in the Roseland neighborhood need your help, or else thousands of Chicago kids may not get a gift for the holiday. An annual toy drive is held at Another Chance Church, 9550 S. Harvard Ave. Parents and children who need a little boost or help from Santa line up, sometimes for hours. Every child 13 and under is able to pick up at least one gift. Tens of thousands of toys are collected each year – except this year, that has not happened. The pastor of the church, the Rev. Kenyatta Smith, said the church is down 19,000 toys this year. On Wednesday night, he was holding onto his faith that Chicagoans will help. “We just believe that it’s important for us to get the story out, that somebody may hear it… some well-off person, and want to help the community outreach,” Smith said. “It’s all of Chicago and the surrounding suburbs.” If you would like to help, Another Chance Church has set up a GoFundMe for Operation Cover Chicago 2020, where you...
A photo of Proud Boys at a Placerville holiday toy drive prompted the city’s police department to publicly distance itself from the group — and the mayor to suggest the historic town may soon change its “Hangtown” logo. The Marine Corps Toys for Tots event in the Sierra foothills city on Saturday was intended as a drive-through collection, in line with social distancing. Near the end of the drive, a group of about 25 men showed up and posed for a photo near a police car. One was dressed as Santa Claus, and most of the others wore sweatshirts with the words “Hangtown Proud Boys” and an image of a noose. In the photo, many flashed a hand sign that has become associated with white supremacists. “To be clear, neither the City of Placerville nor the Placerville Police Department invited, associated with or supports this organization,” said a Facebook post Monday on the police department’s website that was signed by the police chief and the city manager. It went on to say: “We have not authority to disallow anyone from...
The City of Statesboro in partnership with Bulloch County NAACP, the Statesboro Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and the Xi Mu Nu Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. will host a toy to provide Christmas joy to families in need. The toy drive will start on Tuesday, December 8 and will run through Thursday, December 17. “Every child in Statesboro should have the opportunity to share in the joy of Christmas,” said Statesboro Mayor Jonathan McCollar. “The holiday season can be a challenging time of year for families who are already struggling to make ends meet. It is our hope this toy drive will take that pressure off parents so they can spend more time making holiday memories with their children instead of worrying if Santa will be stopping by.” The city and its partner organizations are seeking donations in the form of new, unwrapped toys for ages 1 year to 16 years old. Citizens who are interested in donating to the toy drive can drop...

On Friday, December 11th from 12p.m. to 7p.m., there will be two drop-off locations, one in Lakewood and the other in Arvada. The Toy Collection Day is traditionally a wonderful display of kindness and holiday spirit. Hundreds of people show up and donate new, unwrapped toys, and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Denver ends up with thousands of toys, gift cards, and cash donations. This year, the collection will be outdoors in the parking lots of two King Soopers stores, 8055 Sheridan Blvd., Arvada and 7984 West Alameda Ave., Lakewood. PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — During the COVID-19 pandemic, we’ve seen the community reach out helping hands to their neighbors, and that continues into the holiday season. The David L. Lawrence Convention Center floor looked like a child’s dream on Monday morning with toys coming by the truckload. “We knew that it was going to be hard, but we also knew it was going to be the most important year ever for us to do this,” Play It Forward Pittsburgh Toy Drive organizer Dr. Heather Starr Fiedler said. (Photo Credit: KDKA) Throughout the week, trucks will be coming to the Convention Center downtown as part of the toy drive, which is different this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic. “We’ve tried to make it as safe as we possibly can. We have lots of PPE, we’re separating volunteers into zones and we’re having a limited number of volunteers,” Dr. Starr Fiedler said. Normally, the families in need come and pick out what they would like. This year, they are instead putting in requests for the toys for children, ages 0-12, and they...
