According to popular lore, when the American humorist Mark Twain was asked about rumors that he was gravely ill, he replied, “The reports of my death are greatly exaggerated.” The quote itself is somewhat exaggerated, but the gist remains the same. Matt Nagy didn’t go quite that far Tuesday afternoon, but he did use the word “inaccurate” to describe a report that the Chicago Bears have informed him they will fire him after Thursday’s game against the Detroit Lions at Ford Field. The fact the Bears let the Patch.com report by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Mark Konkol sit out in the open all morning meant no one felt compelled to rally to Nagy’s defense, whether the report is true or they don’t want to get into the business of commenting on every report that comes along. It was a weird day at Halas Hall, but that’s the way it goes sometimes when a team is mired in a five-game losing streak that includes blown leads in the final minute of the last two games. Fire set to memorial for victims of Pulse nightclub mass shooting Jan. 6 committee subpoenas Stephen Miller, Kayleigh McEnany and other top ex-Trump aides Tom Brady thinks it was a "terrible decision" to extend the NFL regular season to 17 games.  During his "Let's Go" podcast that was posted Tuesday morning, Brady explained his resentment for the expanded schedule and criticized how team owners have the majority of control over the extension.  “I think it’s pointless,” Brady said on his podcast of the additional regular-season game. “I thought it was a terrible decision. So I don’t like the fact that we’re playing a 17th game at all. I think 16 is plenty. And, again, you’re eight games into the year and you’re not halfway through, so that’s kind of a little frustrating aspect. So whatever, I mean, we’ll play it. It’s there, you know, a lot of guys probably miss games over the course of the season anyway, so they probably don’t play all 16, most guys." Even as baseball season winds down with Bay Area teams outside the World Series, another group of ballplayers scratched out a win, advocates say — their minor leaguers. Major League Baseball announced this month big-league clubs would be responsible for housing their low-paid minor league players, a policy already adopted by some teams like the Giants in the high-priced Bay Area rental market but not by the A’s. Owners unanimously agreed to provide housing to “certain minor league players,” according to an MLB statement released last week. “We are in the process of finalizing the details of that policy and expect it to be announced and in place for the 2022 season,” MLB said. The shift breaks a long-standing policy of sending players to stay with host families or having them make their own arrangements — often in overcrowded apartments and discount hotels. California’s tops-in-the-nation housing costs this year overwhelmed A’s young minor league players with the Stockton Ports, where a typical player makes $500 a week under a standard contract. Some lost money paying for...

What’s a reasonable expectation for the Warriors this season? Let’s start with this: They shouldn’t be considered a title contender to start the season. They still have much to prove heading into tonight’s regular-season opener in Los Angeles against Lebron James and the Lakers. The Warriors have too many question marks. Too many “ifs.” But making the real playoffs — not that play-in tournament they were part of last season —  is a real and viable goal for Steph Curry & Co. The Warriors will never return to the level of play they were able to reach with Kevin Durant. Those juggernaut days are done and gone. But the Warriors’ calculated offseason and undefeated preseason are encouraging. This team knows who it is and what it wants to do. It has an identity to start the season for the first time in three years. After a couple years of fighting it, the Warriors finally acknowledged that fit matters in basketball. As such, they have spent the last few months building a roster that fits...

The SNL Weekend Update anchors throughout the years, ranked 50 Ways To Live the Big Life on a Small Budget Right off the bat, I've got two issues that surfaced on opening night of the NHL season. First, and far less serious, how can the Tampa Bay Lightning just absolutely not show up in their season opener in front of their home fans against a depleted Penguins team. Shoutout to the Penguins who played a great game, but Tampa just never showed up. Thankfully we didn't lay the -250 juice on the moneyline.  Second, and this is a far more serious issue as a hockey bettor, is the handling of the Kraken situation. For those unaware, Seattle played their first NHL game last night and they were expected to be without four players due to COVID protocols. Then, out of nowhere, about an hour before game time, news came out that that three of the players on the COVID list were cleared to play.  Jared McCann and Joonas Donskoi play top-six minutes for the Kraken. ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Jamahl Mosley waited a long time for this chance. He’s not about to let very low expectations douse his enthusiasm. The new coach of the Orlando Magic understands that this season, his first as an NBA head coach, is part of a massive rebuild that started last spring when the team traded away its best players — Nikola Vucevic, Even Fournier and Aaron Gordon. Here’s what he has now: a roster of players with a combined zero NBA championships, zero All-Star appearances, and somewhere around zero expectations. “The great part of this group is this is one of the most tied-together, push-the-next-man teams I’ve ever been around,” Mosley said. “So whatever the noise about us is, I don’t think they listen. I think they block it out. We just have to get better every day. We have to improve mentally, physically, just making sure we’re healthy. … Do that, the results always take care of themselves.” He also wants them to ring the bell. Along one of the sidelines on the Magic practice court is a...

Everything you need to know © Provided by CBS Sports James Ennis III worked out for the Los Angeles Lakers this offseason. He has that in common with a number of other well-known players, who, like him, are not currently members of the Los Angeles Lakers. Isaiah Thomas came in, worked out and left. So did Darren Collison and Mike James and, in all likelihood, a number of other veterans whose auditions went unreported. It's standard offseason practice. Most of these workouts don't lead to job offers. Players typically move on and await another opportunity.  But give Ennis credit: He is persistent. Or perhaps a tad stalker-ish. The Ventura California native will not leave the Lakers alone this offseason. In August, he liked a number of tweets suggesting that he would land with the Lakers. Now, four games into a winless preseason in which the Lakers have allowed an average of 121 points per game, Ennis has taken...

Crystal Gardens: Chicago residents are fighting to save one of the citys only indoor green spaces No silver bullet for crisis at the Southern border The COVID-19 pandemic derailed the 2019-20 NBA season, and the impact of the coronavirus was felt once again during the 2020-21 campaign. While the league has gotten closer to a sense of normalcy — teams will play their typical 82-game slates, and fans will be back in arenas — it's clear that the NBA is not out of the woods just yet. The biggest storyline from this year's set of team media days was how players felt about being vaccinated against COVID-19. The vast majority of players have been vaccinated ahead of the 2021-22 season, but a vocal minority has turned the issue into a near-daily topic of conversation. MORE: Draymond Green won't push vaccine on Andrew Wiggins For now, let's put the opinions to the side and focus on what we actually know about the COVID-19 protocols for the upcoming season. In general, I tend to shy away from making preseason predictions about the NBA. I have no reason to think my insight or analysis is any more prescient than anyone else’s and putting a pin down on anything specific is more likely to be wrong than right when you’re talking about 82 games for 30 teams and roughly 500 players. Still, in the interests of promoting conversation and keeping this daily newsletter full and robust, I’m going to give it a shot this year. I’m still working on predictions for team win totals and awards but I thought I’d warm up with a few more esoteric categories for the upcoming 2021-22 NBA season: scoring leader, assist leader, turnover leader and best lineup.Your 2021-22 NBA scoring leader will be: Damian LillardLillard finished third in the NBA in scoring last season, trailing both Stephen Curry and Bradley Beal at 28.8 points per game. The Oakland A’s season was a disappointment. The defending 2020 American League West champions looked to be in control of a fourth straight postseason berth, but spiraled in August and September out of the picture. While a few brutal injuries and a PED suspension played catalysts to the flameout, some underwhelming performances didn’t help either. A few games remain, but here are grades for some key A’s players that began the season on the team’s opening day roster. Catcher Sean Murphy: B- In 2019, Murphy, 26, was ranked along with pitchers Jesús Luzardo and A.J. Puk as a fixture in what was a highly-ranked A’s farm system. Since his call-up that August, Murphy has shown tremendous power, a keen eye at the plate and maturity behind it. After suffering a collapsed lung days before spring training began, Murphy was eased back into the baseball grind. A slow start to the regular season peaked in June, where he hit five home runs, batted .227 with a .837 OPS. But instead of going up, Murphy fell back down;...

Taj Gibson and Julius Randle prove how the Knicks have changed their culture for the better Alexander Wilson August 29, 2021 Share on facebook Facebook Share on twitter Twitter Share on reddit Reddit It was only a year ago that the New York Knicks were an undesirable destination for free agents and big names. However, in just one season, they’ve turned their entire organization around from the bottom up. Elevating the culture and creating a winning environment has sparked players’ interest around the league, which led to a successful free agency for the team this off-season, bringing in Evan Fournier and Kemba Walker, two players who significantly increase the talent on the roster. It is clear that the Knicks have restored their image, and two of their own players back up that assessment. Veteran center Taj Gibson, who spent the second half of the season last year with New York, signed a two-year extension to stay with the team. While Gibson understands he might not be a priority on the floor, he’s looking...
As the calendar turns to fall in September, the seasons also change in “Pokemon Go.” The period of discovery is fading to black and the time of mischief has begun. This season, which runs from 10 a.m. Sept. 1 to 10 a.m. Dec. 1, focuses on Hoopa, who has already brought the unexpected to the game. The mythical Pokemon brought in legendaries in the second part of Pokemon Go Fest 2021 and gave players more of a taste of Galar region pocket monsters in Phase 3 of the Ultra Unlock. Players should expect plenty of surprises and that begins with a season-long Special Research story that will let players catch Confined Hoopa. The Mischief Pokemon has another form called Hoopa Unbound, but there’s no word on that coming any time soon. Those set of tasks begin on Sept. 5 and the quest line comes to an end with a special event at the end of the season. Unfortunately, Hoopa cannot be transferred to Pokemon Home for now. LaLiga 21/22 is about to start, and in a transfer market without many movements, there are names to consider in all profiles. MANCHESTER CITY are hoping for some good news by the weekend in their pursuit of Harry Kane and Jack Grealish. And Pep Guardiola could really use a boost right now. 4Harry Kane is believed to favour a move to Manchester CityCredit: Getty It has been exactly the kind of pre-season he did NOT want as City bid to retain their Premier League crown. The lack of first-team players around and the long wait for progress on their two main summer targets are just part of it. City have also been battling the effects of a Covid outbreak in the youth ranks and changes to their friendly schedule. Oh, and then last week the spectre of Financial Fair Play reared its head once again. So boss Guardiola could be forgiven if he was feeling a bit lonely and fed up as he prepares his squad for their ONLY traditional pre-season friendly Tuesday night. The NFL just dropped quite the update, as they made it clear that if a game can’t be rescheduled this season, the team with a COVID outbreak will forfeit that contest.  Leave it to Roger Goodell and the NFL to drop quite the bomb on Thursday with training camps around the corner across the country. With there still be plenty of debate in terms of players getting the COVID-19 vaccine, the NFL just sent quite the statement for guys on the edge. That’s because the league has announced that if any of the games in the new 18-week schedule can’t be reschedule due to a COVID outbreak, the team that had that outbreak will be forced to forfeit and take a loss. That obviously will have monster postseason implications. The NFL just informed clubs that if a game cannot be rescheduled during the 18-week season in 2021 due to a COVID outbreak among unvaccinated players, the team with the outbreak will FORFEIT and be credited with a loss for playoff seeding, per sources. Massive implications. — Tom Pelissero (@TomPelissero)...

The NFL still wants to expand the regular season to 18 games. It’s a desire that has existed for years. In an excellent oral history of the 2011 lockout, Daniel Kaplan of TheAthletic.com shares a nugget that underscores the duration of ownership’s desire for 18 regular-season games. “We were in separate rooms, the players in one, the owners in the other,” Giants co-owner John Mara told Kaplan. “And Jerry Jones said, ‘I’m going to go in there and I’m going to sell them on 18 games.’ I said to Jerry, ‘You have no chance of doing that.’ He said, ‘You watch me.’ I said, ‘Jerry, if you go in there and sell them on 18 games I will wear a Cowboys jersey in Times Square every day for the next week.’ We all...
From Opening Day through the final game of the first half, the Giants received critical contributions from players up and down their roster. Stars such as Brandon Crawford and Buster Posey have led the way with career-best numbers at the plate while ace Kevin Gausman pitched his way to his first career All-Star selection with one of the most dominant runs by a Giants starter since the club moved to San Francisco in 1958. Aside from the Giants’ core players, a huge group of role players and lesser-known contributors were key to the success of a team that stormed out of the gates and never slowed down en route to posting a 57-32 record that’s given Gabe Kapler’s squad a two-game edge over the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West. Sustaining the Giants’ first-half pace will be a major challenge for a club that plays 35 of its final 73 games against teams that are currently in playoff position, and doing so will require an even bigger list of players to lead the charge toward...
Jermaine Burton, Georgia Bulldogs. (Mandatory Credit: Dale Zanine-USA TODAY Sports) The Georgia football team is counting on these three players to have breakout seasons for Kirby Smart’s Bulldogs to have a chance at winning the SEC. If the Georgia football program wants to win the SEC for the first time since 2017, the Bulldogs need to see breakout seasons from a handful of emerging talents. Georgia may have one of the best rosters in the Power Five, but anything short of a College Football Playoff berth this season will be viewed as a disappointment. The Dawgs should make it to their fifth straight New Year’s Six bowl in a worst-case scenario this season, but that is not good enough. For them to make the playoff, they need a handful of players to break out this year. Here are three players who need to have breakout seasons for the Dawgs to win the SEC in 2021.Georgia football: 3 players who must have breakout seasons to win the SEC 3 Jermaine Burton WR Georgia Bulldogs Georgia needs Jermaine Burton to be in...
Knicks News, 7/4: 3 untouchables for the Knicks, internal discussions on Chris Paul Alexander Wilson July 4, 2021 Share on facebook Facebook Share on twitter Twitter Share on reddit Reddit With draft capital and youth to spare, the Knicks could look to execute a blockbuster trade this off-season, but there are a few players on the roster that should be deemed “untouchable.” While adding superstar talent is always a benefit, tearing up the foundation of a roster can sometimes lead to failure, and as we’ve seen in the past it can also be malpractice. Building around the quality the Knicks already have should be a priority, and with $50+ million in free agency and an attractive destination for players, New York doesn’t have to execute a massive deal to improve the team. Three untouchable players for the Knicks: Julius Randle: If not for Julius Randle, New York wouldn’t even be considered a destination for big name free agents. Pairing him with an elite point guard should help the team tremendously, but if you...

Yankees’ Hal Steinbrenner speaks about 2021 season for the Bombers: ‘It’s aggravating; maddening’ Andres Chavez July 1, 2021 Share on facebook Facebook Share on twitter Twitter Share on reddit Reddit New York Yankees’ president and managing partner Hal Steinbrenner, like most fans, is extremely frustrated about the team’s current performance. They are 41-39 and currently out of the playoff picture, and are coming off a heartbreaking loss against the Los Angeles Angels. “It’s aggravating, maddening,” Steinbrenner said Thursday, just a few hours after the Yankees blew a four-run lead in the ninth inning in spectacular fashion. However, while frustrated, Steinbrenner won’t pull one of his father’s moves: he won’t blow it all up and fire everybody. In fact, he said he still supports general manager Brian Cashman, skipper Aaron Boone, and the whole coaching staff. “Brian and I have been doing this a lot of years together. He’s very intelligent. We communicate very well. There’s not much that happens without him running it by me first. He knows that’s the way I want...
SentinelOne Exceeds IPO Goal to Raise $1.2 Billion Cramers Mad Money Recap: Facebook, Merck, Nvidia The Philadelphia 76ers finished the 2020-21 season with the best record in the Eastern Conference for the first time in 20 years. But, they were ultimately unable to advance past the second round of the postseason as they fell to the Atlanta hawks in seven games in the semifinals. After a disappointing end to a promising season, the Sixers enter the offseason facing a plethora of important questions. Here's a look at four of the most pressing. © Provided by CBS Sports 1. Will the Sixers offer Embiid an extension? Joel Embiid has clearly established himself as one of the absolute best players in the NBA, and the centerpiece of the 76ers, both literally and figuratively. Embiid averaged 28.5 points, 10.6 rebounds, 2.8 assist, 1.4 blocks and a steal per game for Philadelphia this past season, and he was arguably the most impactful player in the league when he was out on the floor. As a result, he finished second in MVP voting behind...
Bay Area News Group’s Giants beat reporter Kerry Crowley and A’s beat reporter Shayna Rubin go back and forth on this weekend’s Bay Bridge Series at Oracle Park between a pair of teams with their eyes set on making a run to the postseason. Shayna Rubin: The Giants went from bottom feeder to surprise contender to best team in the stacked National League West. What is it about the way Farhan Zaidi maintains a roster that lends itself to all of this winning? Kerry Crowley: I think Giants fans have been frustrated by the number of injuries the team has suffered and have become conditioned to expect at least one or two players to hit the injured list on a weekly basis, but it’s what happens after the initial feelings of despair that reveals why the Giants are in first place. Every time a player goes down, someone different steps up and fills a void, which means the Giants’ depth has been the 2021 team’s greatest strength. Beginning in 2019, Zaidi began reshaping the 40-man roster from...

New York Giants: 2 breakouts players on defense for the 2021 season Alexander Wilson June 18, 2021 Share on facebook Share on twitter Share on reddit Share on email The New York Giants are looking to re-create their identity on defense, despite having a top 10 unit in points allowed per game last season thanks to the emergence of Patrick Graham and the 2020 free-agency class. The acquisitions of James Bradberry, Blake Martinez, and Logan Ryan proved to be significant, but the defense is not done elevating their game, as they brought in former Tennessee corner Adoree Jackson and drafted a bevy of pass rushers. We should expect a more creative defensive scheme next season, relying on man coverage and heavy blitz packages — Graham’s roots. After minicamp last week, Graham spoke about the importance of man coverage and how it opens up the defense. There are multiple players who will benefit from this change in philosophy with added personnel that fit the scheme, in both the secondary and on the defensive line....

(Photo by: Ken Levine/Getty Images The Golden State Warriors have had some stars over the course of their run, but you surely forgot (or didn’t realize) these three NBA legends played for them. From the franchise’s roots in Philadelphia to initially being named the San Francisco Warriors upon their move cross-country, the Golden State Warriors have had some great players play for them. That’s easy to overlook since they went from 1975-2015 without winning an NBA title, or even making a Finals appearance. NBA fans of a certain age remember “Run TMC” in Golden State, with Tim Hardaway, Mitch Richmond and Chris Mullin as the Warriors’ star trio. Before and after them, between titles, there were some good players who passed through the East Bay at some point...
Epic Games The new season of Fortnite has only just started and there’s already a lot of controversy surrounding some of the new additions. Mainly, it seems like fans have honed in on the new UFOs and their ability to lay waste to the competition with ease. The UFOs have actually already been nerfed once, but they can still be very powerful in the right hands. As time goes on, more and more players are finding out new ways to use the UFO, and some of them don’t even involve using the weapons. The strength of these UFOs has the community split with some of them feeling it’s fine because of their low health but others feeling the opposite because fighting a flying ship just isn’t very fun to them. If you’re an Arena player, it’s looking like you won’t have to be dealing with UFOs anymore, but it’s not for the reason you’d think it is.Epic Disables UFOs in Arena In an effort to address server performance in high-level matches, we have removed Saucers from competitive playlists...
3 free agents the Knicks should re-sign for the 2021-22 season Alexander Wilson June 9, 2021 ShareTweetFlipRedditWhile the New York Knicks are being connected to a variety of different star players and complementary pieces, it is entirely possible they look to a few of their own free agents to consider bringing back for the 2021-22 season. Their most recent campaign was full of ups and downs, but the team surprisingly exceeded expectations thanks to a few key contributors. The players expected to hit the market this off-season include Derrick Rose, Alec Burks, Nerlens Noel, Taj Gibson, and Elfrid Payton. While some of these players deserve an extension, others are worth letting go, so the Knicks have to decide carefully who they are willing to spend money on as they look to acquire a star player on a max contract. Three free agents the New York Knicks should re-sign for next season: 1.) Derrick Rose Without the influence of Derrick Rose this past season, the Knicks would’ve struggled to claim the 4th...
