During the holiday season, a lot of well-intentioned people encourage us to focus, more than anything, on our families. The message is loud and clear: Cherish the time you have with your loved ones, prioritize seeing family above all else, and be present in the moment. All of that is good and reasonable. But what happens when you can’t—or don't want to—go home? That’s where the concept of “chosen” family can come in, if companionship is something you’re looking for. Anyone can develop a chosen family (or families) for any reason, though it’s something that’s long been held as sacred among queer communities. Even today (and especially in generations past), many openly LGBTQ+ people have been kicked out or otherwise disowned by our families, which can manifest in a number of ways—perhaps it’s temporary, perhaps there’s partial communication with certain people, or it could be a total estrangement. But what does it mean to have a chosen family, and what does it look like in practice? Like so many things about relationships: It depends. As a gay person that’s been...

THE World’s Most Private Couple have emerged from their seclusion in Hollywood to announce the birth of a daughter. Given that Harry and Meghan could give Moses a run for his money in the portentousness stakes, we should have known that this would be no normal child, and that its name would be like some mystery of Holy Writ, replete with meaning. ???? Read our Meghan and Harry live blog for the latest updates 8We should have known that this would be no normal child, and that its name would be like some mystery of Holy Writ, replete with meaningCredit: AFP 8 But even I bent double when I heard the Sussexes had chosen to call their daughter Lilibet Diana Mountbatten Windsor.  Diana, as the name of Harry’s beloved and much missed mother, is a natural choice of course. But Lilibet is the Queen’s intimate family nickname, used only by her parents, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, her sister Princess Margaret and her husband, the Duke of Edinburgh. It is not exactly something the monarch carelessly flings around...

I HAVE always likened becoming a new family member by virtue of marriage or courtship to being the new girl at school. You know that everyone around you is connected by years and experience; bonded by affection and proximity and, in the case of families, bound by blood and fortified by unity and a common identity. 7Becoming a new family member by virtue of marriage or courtship to being the new girl at schoolCredit: Reuters Everyone has already established their feet under the table and you are observed and assessed and . . . judged. So I can well imagine how intimidating it might have felt for Meghan Markle to enrol in the most famous family in the world. While I never got as far as joining it (I stopped short of a bit of rough and tumble under the covers with Prince Edward), I have had to join a couple of other units over the past 30 years through my marriages. And I don’t mind admitting that a very large part of the reason I married my first husband, John Turnbull, aged...
PRINCESS Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank have revealed they have named their baby son August Philip Hawke Brooksbank - and there is a very sweet meaning behind the name. The choice of Philip as a middle name pays tribute to Eugenie’s grandfather Prince Philip, who was admitted to hospital this week. 6Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank have announced they have named their baby son August Philip Hawke BrooksbankCredit: PA:Press Association Prince Philip, 99, currently remains at King Edward VII's hospital, having been admitted on Tuesday evening after feeling unwell. Meanwhile, August means “great” in Latin - and although isn’t a traditional British royal name, is still popular in the German hereditary royal line, from which Queen Victoria descends. And Hawke - linking to the bird - has been made popular by the likes of Tony Hawk and Ethan Hawke. Buckingham Palace today released an image of Eugenie and husband Jack Brooksbank with their baby boy, who was born at the Portland Hospital in central London at 8.55am on February 9. 6The middle name Philip is a tribute to Princess Eugenie's grandad,...
A prominent human rights attorney apparently posed as a Latina woman for years. Despite claiming Puerto Rican and Colombian heritage for over a decade, Natasha Lycia Ora Bannan is actually a white woman from Georgia, according to a report by the non-profit news outlet Prism. She serves senior counsel at the Latino Justice Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund. Records obtained by the site say Bannan’s family arrived in the United States from Ireland, Italy and Russia. On Monday, Bannan, 43, clarified that she’s white in response to the report. “I am racially white, and have always said that. However my cultural identity was formed as a result of my family, both chosen and chosen for me, and that has always been Latinx,” the attorney wrote. “My identity is my most authentic expression of who I am and how I pay honor to the people who have formed me since I was a child.” Bannan also sent an email to Prism saying she’s previously identified as white saying her “biological origins are Italian,...
(CBS Local)– Lena Waithe is one of the most creative people in Hollywood and her work can be seen throughout the ViacomCBS family. The screenwriter, producer and actor is the creator of “The Chi” on Showtime and the new BET series “Twenties,” about a group of Black women in their 20’s figuring out their lives, careers and relationships in Los Angeles. The comedy features actors we’ve seen before like Christina Elmore and new faces like Gabrielle Graham. Both Elmore and Graham love being on a show that’s as authentic as this one. “It’s been a dream, it’s literally a dream come true,” said Elmore in an interview with CBS Local’s DJ Sixsmith. “After the last show that I was on ended, my husband asked what I wanted to do next. I said I would love to do a half hour comedy, on cable, with Black women, about Black women. Twenties is literally my dream and it has been pretty magical.” “I was in acting class and my acting teacher said you need to be specific about the type of work that...
