A man convicted of raping best-selling author Alice Sebold 40 years ago was exonerated following a producer working on a film adaptation of the writer's memoir finding inconsistencies with the story.  "I’ve been crying tears of joy and relief the last couple of days," Anthony Broadwater, 61, told The Associated Press on Tuesday. "I’m so elated, the cold can’t even keep me cold." Anthony Broadwater, who spent 16 years in prison, was cleared Monday by a judge of raping Sebold when she was a student at Syracuse University, an assault she wrote about in her 1999 memoir, "Lucky." The memoir preceded Sebold’s book, "The Lovely Bones," which became a bestseller after its release in 2002 and was later made into a movie.  FLORIDA'S 'GROVELAND FOUR' EXONERATED MORE THAN 70 YEARS AFTER BEING ACCUSED OF RAPING WHITE GIRL The exoneration comes after a producer working on a film adaptation of the memoir became skeptical that Broadwater was a guilty man. Initial media reports stated the adaptation of "Lucky" was a Netflix project, but the streaming and production company said it is...

Don Winslow, the author of several New York Times bestsellers, recently blasted Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) in a newly-released video shared on social media. For months now, Manchin has positioned himself as one of the main roadblocks of President Joe Biden's proposed Build Back Better agenda, pushing back on key provisions including child tax credits and climate initiatives. In the video, Winslow described Manchin as a "senator for sale" as he detailed the lawmaker's "financial conflicts of interest as well as those of his family," HuffPost reports. With the video, Winslow tweeted, "[Joe Manchin] is blocking Joe Biden's agenda. We found so much vile and provable corruption in Manchin's life and his families life that we could not fit it all into one video. So this is just Part 1." From floating the idea that 'the world ceased to be beautiful after the fall of the Soviet Union' to deconstructing the class system, bestselling author Sally Rooney's novels are a lot more political than their racy reputation suggests.  The Irish author, 30, hit the headlines this week after she defended rejecting an offer from an Israeli publisher to translate her latest book into Hebrew, saying the decision was on political grounds - with critics accusing her of anti-Semitism. However, her personal politics and literary career have always been heavily intertwined, weaving many of her left-leaning beliefs into all three of her bestselling novels.  In Normal People, which Sally once described as a 'Marxist love story', Connell and Marianne read Karl Marx's The Communist Manifesto and attend a protest against Israel during 2014 Gaza War.  Meanwhile in her latest novel Beautiful World, Where Are You, the main characters Alice and Eileen discuss how 'the world ceased to be beautiful after the fall of the Soviet Union.' Speaking to the New Yorker 2018, the author said: 'I feel like you can really get away with putting a lot of...

Five years ago, I heard the expression ‘You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with’ and it was one of those phrases that immediately got my creative juices flowing. Within an hour, I had my lead character and the plot of my new novel, Freckles. Credited to the famous American author and business motivational speaker Jim Rohn, it’s an enigmatic phrase. The question it begs — who are those five people? — could, I suppose, have a different answer in each different phase of our lives. While the precious people remain, others change as our situations change: new neighbourhood, new job, new you. But if you were to choose a phase of your life, and look at who you were and what you were going through, and then closely examine the five people you allowed into your inner circle, how much of an impact did those people have on your decisions and on your character? Four UK-based writers reflected on the five people who've shaped their lives the most, as Cecelia Ahern (pictured)...

A childbirth campaigner has claimed she was 'cancelled' for taking issue with the term 'birthing people' instead of women.    Milli Hill, a UK-based bestselling author, said she experienced 'extreme bullying' after she made the comments on social media last year. The mother-of-three was called out by a stranger on Instagram last November, who wrote: 'Birthing people are seen as "the fragile sex' who need to be kept under patriarchal authority by doctors.' Hill replied: 'I would challenge the term "birthing person" in this context though. It is women who are seen as the "fragile sex" etc, and obstetric violence [medical interventions performed during childbirth without a woman's consent] is violence against women.' After the comments, she was subjected to waves of online hate, and some called for her books to be boycotted, while she was dropped by a charity she'd worked alongside for years.  The mother-of-three said she experienced 'extreme bullying' after she made the comments on social media last November, and people said to boycott her book  One comment read: 'Let's just air it. Kody Scott was such a notorious neighborhood gangster that schoolchildren trembled at the thought of passing by his South Los Angeles home out of fear he’d pick a fight or steal their bikes and lunch money. “That’s like butterflies,” said Skipp Townsend, a former gang member, now a community activist who works with 2nd Call, a community based organization that serves high-risk individuals. “It’s like man, my stomach gets jittery because we have no idea what Kody is going to do.” But on this day, as Townsend and a schoolmate passed by 69th Street near Florence and Normandie avenues, they happened to catch Scott on a good day. Townsend’s schoolmate told Scott he had a stomachache and was just trying to get home. Scott patted him on the back. “All right, I’ll see you tomorrow,” he said, then sent them on their way, unscathed. The Making of a ‘Monster’ : MONSTER: The Autobiography of an L.A. A New York Times bestselling author has faced backlash online after explaining why he doesn't read books, saying he gets his information from blogs, Instagram, and YouTube because they're more current.  Neil Patel, a marketer and co-author of Hustle: The Power to Charge Your Life with Money, Meaning, and Momentum, made waves on Twitter this week when he shared a video outlining his anti-book stance.  'The only books I read are kids' books — and that's to my daughter,' the 36-year-old said. 'People talk about reading books. You know what? I wrote a book, and I was even a New York Times bestselling author, but here's the thing: Most books that you see in a bookstore, they're written a year to two years before they were actually published, and they go through this really long process.' The best way to combat the incestuous and corrupt relationships between news media and political figures is to “write bestselling books exposing all of these linkages,” Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) said on Friday, referring to Breitbart News Editor in Chief Alex Marlow’s Breaking the News: Exposing the Establishment Media’s Hidden Deals and Secret Corruption. Cotton spoke with Marlow on SiriusXM’s Breitbart News Daily. Marlow highlighted two examples of conflicts of interest presented by marriages between news media persons and current and prospective Biden administration officials. “It is anticipated that Biden is going to nominate a guy named Tom Nides to be the ambassador to Israel, and he’s someone who is part of the Biden Institute at Delaware, and I think is a Morgan Stanley guy — Democrat establishment all the way — but what’s more interesting to me is that he’s married to the vice president of newsgathering at CNN, named Virginia Moseley.” He added, “The type of thing I’ve been documenting in my book Breaking the News is how much of the media establishment is literally in bed with the Biden administration....

A charming handwritten letter penned by Roald Dahl to an adoring fan the year before he died saying to 'never shelter children from the world' and revealing his secret to writing bestselling books has gone under the hammer. The iconic children's author replied to student Christine Wotton in 1989 after she found his address in the back of an old library book while she was at university. The fascinating letter gives a rare insight into the novelist's opinion of his own books and his determination to get children reading. In the handwritten note, Dahl - considered one of the world's best storytellers - frankly admits his work had 'very few messages' and was 'mostly pure fantasy'. He wrote in the letter, dated August 2, 1989: 'Never shelter children from the world. The writer of a critically-acclaimed new biography of novelist Philip Roth has been accused of grooming underage girls while working as a teacher, and raping one when she was a young adult.  Blake Bailey, 57, has been fired from his literary agency as a result of the claims, which saw two other former students allege that they had consensual sex with him as young adults. Both women allege that their encounters came about as a result of a 'power imbalance' with the older man, but Bailey denies all claims of wrongdoing.  Bailey was accused of grooming students as young as 12 and 13 years old while working at Lusher High School in New Orleans by offering to 'mentor' them as writers.  He is then said to have had sex with them - or attempted to have sex with them - when they were young adults. Bailey is said to have done so while studying Vladimir Novokov's 1955 novel Lolita with his students. It tells the story of a middle-aged professor's infatuation with a 10 year-old girl.  The most serious allegation...

A seminary professor in Georgia is featured in a book of prayers asking God to help her “hate white people.” The book, A Rhythm of Prayer: A Collection of Meditations for Renewal, features a prayer from Chanequa Walker-Barnes, Mercer University associate professor of practical theology, that begins with “Dear God, Please help me to hate White people." “Or at least to want to hate them,” the prayer continues. “At least, I want to stop caring about them, individually and collectively.” Walker-Barnes explained that she has no desire to hate openly racist white people and “strident segregationists” because they are “already in hell,” but instead, she wants to hate “the nice ones.” Specifically, Walker-Barnes said she wants to hate the “Fox News-loving, Trump-supporting voters who ‘don’t see color’ but who make thinly veiled racist comments about ‘those people.’” TOM COTTON CRITICIZES MLB FOR PUNISHING GEORGIA OVER VOTING LAW WHILE PARTNERING WITH COMMUNIST CHINA “Lord, if you can’t make me hate them, at least spare me from their perennial gaslighting, whitemansplaining, and White woman tears,” the prayer says. “Lord, if it be...

A bestselling author who became 'obsessed' with freeing a convicted murderer from prison has revealed how the nearly six years she has spent on the case has left her 'absolutely broke,' 'seriously ill,' and 'years past deadline' on her next book.    Sara Gruen, whose 2006 novel Water for Elephants sold 10 million copies worldwide, has devoted countless hours and more than $500,000 of her own money trying to prove the innocence of Charles Murdoch, who was sentenced to life without parole for first-degree murder in the early 1990s.  In a piece published in partnership with The Marshall Project and New York Magazine, fellow author Abbott Kahler detailed how the 52-year-old from Asheville, North Carolina, has nearly ruined her life by taking on the case.   'Since 2016, she has been in a perpetual state of emergency. She has borrowed against her house. Death threats forced her to flee her home for months. Big Tech has tightened its stranglehold on conservative ideas by censoring a bestselling book that undermines transgender ideology by showing its lack of scientific grounding. Renowned scholar Dr. Ryan T. Anderson released his book When Harry Became Sally: Responding to the Transgender Moment exactly three years ago, but only now, just days before a Congressional vote on the Equality Act, Amazon has decided to erase the book from its website. Amazon has cancelled the meticulously researched book not because of any factual errors or incendiary language but because it counters the gender ideology popular in woke circles. Noteworthy experts in the field, including the former psychiatrist-in-chief at Johns Hopkins Hospital, have heaped praise on the book, Anderson told Breitbart News Tuesday, and no one has yet produced a serious scholarly response to the arguments it makes. Anderson said that he has reached out to Amazon in an effort to find out what the tech giant found so intolerable about the book, but so far company executives have declined to respond. Some may find it eerie that Amazon has decided to...
