Normally, it’s a slam dunk. In a typical football season, De La Salle receives Northern California’s spot in the state Open Division championship game and everyone else from the region falls in line behind the Spartans. But the choice isn’t clear-cut this season. When California Interscholastic Federation officials meet Sunday to choose teams for the Open and regional championship games, De La Salle will be near the top of the board. But so will Serra, fresh off its 16-12 victory Friday night over St. Francis in the Central Coast Section Division I title game. Had St. Francis won, the CIF’s decision would have been a no-brainer. St. Francis would have gotten the nod because it beat De La Salle in September and would have been undefeated. But now the CIF must decide between De La Salle, the North Coast Section’s Open Division champion, and Serra. Mater Dei, which beat Servite for the Southern Section Division I title on Friday, will be the Southern California representative in the state Open game on Dec. 11 at...
CAMPBELL — A little before 9 p.m. Friday, Serra quarterback Dominique Lampkin ran across the goal line for the go-ahead touchdown in a 16-12 victory over St. Francis. The Padres followed with a two-point try that failed. There were just over two minutes left in a thrilling Central Coast Section Division I championship game between league rivals at Westmont High. Then things got scary. Uneasiness from the sounds of gunshots sent some terrified fans in a stadium packed with more than 5,000 spectators running for cover. St. Francis players hit the deck on the sideline. Numerous Serra players ran off the field and up an embankment, until their coach, Patrick Walsh, told them it was safer to remain in the stadium. “It was chaotic,” Walsh said. Saint Francis players and others lay on the field after sounds of gunshots outside the stadium caused a panic in the fourth quarter during the CCS Division I final at Westmont High School on Friday, Nov. 26, 2021, in Campbell, Calif. Top matchups Central Coast Section No. 2 Serra (10-1) vs. No. 1 St. Francis (11-0) in Division I final, Friday at Westmont HS, 7 p.m.: Second matchup this month between the section’s top two teams. St. Francis won the first game in dominant fashion, with Viliami “Juju” Teu rushing for a school-record 344 yards and two touchdowns in 45 carries to lead the way as the Lancers avenged a 49-7 loss at Serra in the spring. The 44-21 victory at Serra on Nov. 6 clinched the West Catholic Athletic League championship for St. Francis. A victory Friday would pad the school’s record of CCS football titles to 17. St. Francis is 15-12-1 in CCS finals, a resume that includes excruciating losses in their past three appearances, to Oak Grove in 2015, Serra in 2017 and Valley Christian in 2018. (The Lancers shared a title with Los Gatos in 2002 when the teams tied 21-21). Serra is 6-0 in CCS finals, including 5-0 under longtime coach Patrick Walsh. This will mark the fourth time since 2016 that the teams have...

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Rain and storms predicted for the Akron area on Thursday has caused the Ohio High School Athletic Association to delay the start of the baseball state tournament until Friday. The scheduled start times and order of games all remain the same, but the state tournament will shift to a Friday-Saturday-Sunday event. Due to pitch count limitations in baseball, the OHSAA always wants to keep both semifinal games of each division on the same day so that both finalists played their semifinal games on the same day. The state tournament is hosted at Canal Park, the home of the Cleveland Indians’ AA affiliate Akron RubberDucks. GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — Tampa Bay Buccaneers safety Antoine Winfield Jr. won’t play in Sunday’s NFC championship game against the Green Bay Packers because of an ankle injury. Winfield didn’t practice Friday and had been listed as questionable on that day’s injury report. This will be the first game the rookie second-round pick from Minnesota has missed all season. While the Bucs (13-5) will be missing one of their starting defensive backs, the Packers (14-3) had better news regarding their secondary. Green Bay starting cornerback Kevin King is active for Sunday’s game after missing practice Friday with a back injury that had left him questionable. The Packers had prepared for the possibility King might not be available by promoting cornerbacks Tramon Williams and KeiVarae Russell from the practice squad to the active roster for the NFC championship game. Green Bay signed the 37-year-old Williams after the Baltimore Ravens released him on Monday. He previously played for the Packers from 2007-14 and 2018-19. Other inactive players for the Bucs include quarterback Ryan Griffin, running back Ke’Shawn Vaughn, wide receiver...

A season that began with typically low outside expectations for San Jose State’s football team has nearly reached the mountaintop. Picked 10th in a poll by the website Mountain West Wire just before the rebooted season began in late October, San Jose Stare has earned a date with the team chosen first. The Spartans will play Boise State in the Mountain West championship game next Saturday because they found a way to keep their magical season going Friday night after an un-Spartan-like — at least in 2020 — first half against Nevada. Through 30 minutes at Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas — San Jose State’s temporary home because of Santa Clara County coronavirus restrictions — the undefeated Spartans looked as if the grueling nature of a season filled with endless challenges had finally set in. What followed in their 30-20 victory was a testament to the team’s identity. San Jose State (6-0) outscored Nevada 23-0 in the second half. The Spartans erased a 13-point deficit, their largest of the season, with sudden recharges to...
