SAN FRANCISCO — Sitting alone with a towel draped over his head after the Warriors’ latest romp, a single image of Klay Thompson captured the rarely seen side of a professional athlete betrayed by his own body and forced to work his way back to the top of his craft. After two and a half years — 899 days, as of Sunday — Thompson’s rehab from two career-altering injuries is finally entering its final stages. There are good days and there are bad ones, and it was apparent that Friday took an emotional toll on Thompson, dressed in street clothes and forced to watch his teammates’ 118-103 win over Portland from the bench. That’s where he remained for half an hour after the final buzzer. One by one, Steph Curry, Draymond Green and coach Steve Kerr eventually cycled through the seat beside him. “I just try to put myself in his shoes,” Kerr said. “He can’t help but stop and think about how much he’s lost the last couple years, just on a personal level. He loves...

His new wife, 27, who is a former flight attendant, added: 'From experience we thought the chances of the leopard claiming the...
Amanda Kloots Marks Anniversary With Nick Cordero After Waitress Premiere Rents Outpace Starter Home Prices in Half of U.S. Cities On the final day of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Eliud Kipchoge cemented his GOAT status by successfully defending his gold medal in the marathon. Plagued with Sapporo's intense humidity and temperatures veering into 90-degree territory, the Kenyan proved, in his words, that "no human is limited." © Provided by Yahoo! Sports In a world full of doubters and chastisers, Kipchoge reminds us that anything is possible. (Photo by Robert Szaniszlo/NurPhoto via Getty Images) That philosophy was exemplified during Kipchoge's second attempt to run an unofficial sub-two-hour marathon, better known as the INEOS 1:59 Challenge. A monumental undertaking that took place in Vienna, Austria nearly two years ago, the 36-year-old's feat is recounted in "Kipchoge: The Last Milestone."  Directed by Jake Scott, viewers are given unparalleled access to the infinite steps taken to accomplish Kipchoge's goal. Without stating the obvious, you can deduce that perfection was necessary for success.  Perhaps the most remarkable part of this story is Kipchoge's demeanor...

As I came to the end of my teens, I longed more than ever for love. But the idea of having sex made me nervous — and I felt I couldn't possibly live up to any man's expectations. Since the age of 13, I'd been a Disney child star, making popular family films such as Pollyanna and The Parent Trap.  Adolescence, however, had hit me hard, sapping my confidence and rendering me paralytically shy. At home, it felt like my parents — the actor John Mills and writer Mary Hayley Bell — told me a thousand times a day how young and irresponsible I was, yet they would never let me make my own decisions.  Their control over my life was becoming suffocating. Well, all that was about to change! In December 1965, I flew to New York on my own for a week of adventure. I was 19 years old, with money in my pocket, completely independent for the first time in my life and ready to shake off my wholesome Disney image. Since I was alone in the...
Kyle Lowry. Nic Antaya/Getty Images Kyle Lowry told Insider that this NBA season was perhaps the toughest of his career. Lowry said the compressed schedule, testing, and protocols were difficult to handle. He said it's important for players to take care of their mental wellbeing. Visit Insider's homepage for more stories. Kyle Lowry has seen a lot over his NBA career, but never a year like this one. Since last July, Lowry, a six-time All-Star, and his Toronto Raptors have played in the NBA's Disney World bubble, staying on the Disney campus from late July to mid-September to complete the 2019-20 season. They then took part in the shortest offseason in league history, resuming training camps in early December and tipping off the regular season weeks later. However, because of the pandemic, Lowry and the Raptors were not able to travel back and forth between the U.S. and Canada, so they spent the 2020-21 season in Tampa, Florida. Amid all of this was the strangest, most stringent NBA season ever — replete with health and safety protocols,...

With new hardware in the form of the PlayStation 5, fans of the post-apocalyptic third-person shooter were hoping for a frame rate bump, and developer Naughty Dog is giving them just that. While Sony isn’t putting out a proper native PS5 version of The Last of Us Part II, the title still has an update that will enhance the game specifically for the platform. The PlayStation team felt the need to release a separate one-minute full of bragging rights, while also showing off gameplay footage and cutscenes with a buttery smooth 60 FPS. Patch v1.08 will have a “targeted” 60 FPS rate, “enhanced resolution,” and quicker load times through a free software update. Players can still choose to target 30...

Once the free update is downloaded, there’s an option to toggle in the game’s display options that lets you choose to target either 60 or 30 frames per second. It’s a PS5-exclusive feature. “The team has been digging into the PS5 hardware and the possibilities it unlocks since launch last year and we’re excited about what the future holds,” said Arne Meyer, Naughty Dog director of communications. “This patch is just...

The Met Gala is coming back. Actually, twice. The Metropolitan Museum of Art announced Monday that the annual high-wattage celebration of both fashion and celebrity — held virtually last year because of the pandemic — will return in person, first in September, and then again on its usual date on the first Monday in May. The galas, Sept. 13 and May 2, will launch a two-part exhibition, which will be on view for almost a year. “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion,” opening Sept. 18, will celebrate the 75th anniversary of the museum’s Costume Institute and “explore a modern vocabulary of American fashion,” the museum said. There was no immediate word on who the celebrity hosts, or chairs, would be for the galas, traditionally a heady...
Related news CaixaBank has diluted its participation in Telephone, as he has been able to confirm Invertia with market sources. In recent weeks the movement has been confirmed after the Catalan entity has collected in cash part of the dividend that the telecommunications operator delivered to its shareholders last December. In february of last year Telephone announced the policy for 2020 maintaining the same conditions of the previous year: the payment of a dividend of 0.40 euros per share, payable in December 2020, (0.20 euros per share), and in June 2021 (0.20 euros per share). The operator offered to pay in cash but also in shares (scrip dividend). In this way, in December the first part of the dividend was paid with 342 million in cash (33%) and 197 million in shares (67%). The operation of CaixaBank has not been notified to the National Securities Market Commission (CNMV) because the dilution has not brought the bank below the 3% stake in the operator, the threshold that the regulator establishes so that these types of movements are notified and...
I’ve always had a soft spot for finding familiar tropes, archetypes, and Easter eggs in TV and movies — like catching all of the Lord of the Rings bits in an episode of Bob’s Burgers, or recognizing a ship named Serenity on an episode of The Expanse. Disney films make this process particularly fun: The studio has a knack for monetizing references across their massive franchises. Marvel films are always packed with moments of fan service for those who have kept up with the cinematic universe, Ralph Breaks the Internet featured Disney’s entire princess lineup, and Pixar animators often subtly pop characters from one film into another as easter egg cameos. So I appreciated that Disney’s new animated movie Raya and the Last Dragon gave me the chance to play spot-the-reference, whether intentional or not. I related the film to Mulan, the Disney classic I grew up with. Both films star an Asian woman driven to combat in order to protect a beloved father, with a dragon sidekick who provides comedic relief. Both films use plucked flowers floating on still...
The aging it is a biological process that affects us all sooner or later. Becoming ‘older’, however, does not mean automatically going into a situation of dependency or disability. The profile of older people, in fact, is changing and they are becoming more assertive, communicative and active, which forces us to change the current models of care and residences. An evolution that, luckily for everyone, is already materializing in the Community of Madrid. The Ministry of Social Policies led by Ciudadanos has just launched the model of the residences of the present and the future, a model focused on the elderly, their well-being and their personal autonomy, halfway between home and a care center. “It is not about controlling their existence. It is about considering them an essential part of our society” From this moment, the regional government will invest 40% per square with the aim of ensuring the highest quality care. Thanks to this, the residences will have more staff (physiotherapists, sociocultural animators, geroculturists, medical and nursing staff, cleaning staff), best menus and strict regulation of the use...
Walking through a door is pretty simple on a physical set, but in the realm of game development, it’s a big struggle. Kurt Margenau, the co-game director on The Last of Us Part 2, and upcoming indie game DeathTrash’s Stephan Hövelbrinks discussed the issue on Twitter, and it seems that when a game developer opens a door, they give everyone else on the team a big headache. The conversation was kicked off when Hövelbrinks tweeted a screenshot of a Discord message that read, in part: “Doors are complicated to have in games and have all sorts of possible bugs. Mostly because they’re a dynamic funnel and block in the pathfinding, potentially locked, potentially destructible, but in general because they sit potentially between any game interaction or character to character situation from here to there.” In short, if you want to go from Point A to Point B, that’s easy enough, but if you throw in a door, that adds all sorts of variables in development. It’s not just an indie game dev problem, either; Hövelbrinks notes that the Assassin’s Creed...
While some women are breaking the glass ceiling, others have been forced to take a step back as the COVID-19 pandemic has triggered a so-called "shecession."In January 2020, women outnumbered men in the United States workforce. In December 2020, women accounted for nearly 90% of the jobs lost. Black women and Latinas have been hit especially hard by unemployment. But the job problem goes even deeper. In order to be counted as unemployed, you have to be actively looking for work -- but more than 2 million women have left the labor force during the pandemic, and they're not looking for work because they are staying home to care for children or other family members. The impact of the "shecession" could last for years. By Lindsey Bahr | Associated Press Contrary to what “Game of Thrones” might have you believe, not all dragons are agents of destruction. In the newest offering from Walt Disney Animation, ” Raya and the Last Dragon,” they are kind, full of magic and, when needed, the saviors of humanity. Five hundred years ago, we’re told in a prologue, dragons sacrificed themselves for humans when a mystical evil called the Druun passed through the lands of Kumandra and turned many to stone. The kingdom splintered into factions — Tail, Talon, Heart, Fang and Spine — who perpetually teeter on the edge of war. Sisu, the only remaining dragon, hasn’t been seen in five centuries. Raya (voiced by “Star Wars'” Kelly Marie Tran) is the young Princess of Heart. Her father (voiced by Daniel Dae Kim) is the Chief who hopes to unite all the territories. It doesn’t go as planned, he’s turned to stone, and Raya is set on a dangerous quest to track down the dragon who she believes is their last hope. The film comes from the odd...
Disney does not deserve Kelly Marie Tran. In 2017, the Vietnamese American actress became the first woman of color to co-lead a Star Wars movie, playing the resourceful rebel mechanic Rose Tico in director Rian Johnson’s Star Wars: Episode VIII — The Last Jedi. It was her first major screen credit after years spent in bit parts and on improv stages, rocketing her from obscurity to worldwide blockbuster recognition. The once-in-a-lifetime experience came with daunting responsibility; to be the “first,” one person tasked with representing many, is an important but sometimes lonely position. Still, Tran met her task with wide-eyed enthusiasm. Rather than play it cool during the press tour leading up to the film’s release, she was a beaming, excited presence. Her director told stories about her shadowing other departments on set, eager to absorb the experience from every angle. And onscreen, it was Tran’s sincerity and guileless warmth—and not just the features of her face—that marked Rose as a new kind of Star Wars character. It felt natural that she delivered the film’s thesis herself, redefining heroism for...

Democrat Anthony Brindisi, who had stolen this seat in a region near Syracuse from Claudia Tenney during the 2018 legislative elections, publicly conceded defeat, in a tweet, after fighting in court against the confirmation of the victory of its rival, by only 109 votes. “It is time to turn the page on these elections (…) and to build a more united country for our children,” he said on Monday. Mrs. Tenney thanked him. “He graciously offered to help with a smooth transition and I look forward to working with him in the next few days,” she said. Mr. Brindisi had pointed out numerous dysfunctions in the way local authorities conducted the elections, notably preventing more than 2,400 people from taking part in the polls. But after three months of examining them, a New York State Supreme Court judge ruled that the valid ballots counted did grant Ms. Tenney the victory – by 109 votes out of some 300,000 voters. This dispute underscores the multiple legal battles that accompanied the presidential and legislative elections of November 3. Many ballots had...
Bridget Jones’s toe-curling exploits still make us hoot with laughter a quarter of a century on. Many have been the news about The walking dead in recent times, even in all these months of the pandemic. Editorial: Gaming / Facebook / Twitter / YouTube / Instagram / News / Discord / Forums The story of the first The Last of Us is one of the most emotional in the history of videogames and since Naughty Dog decided to rely on a deeper narrative, it would only be a matter of taking a step so that what Ellie and Joel experienced could be considered from the perspective of another medium. Today, we know that HBO is preparing a series inspired by the franchise and that Sony has such plans for some of its IPs and it is all part of a large-scale plan, as Jim Ryan pointed out. Germany has dropped a probe into a former Nazi guard slated to become 'possibly the last' suspect deported from the US for alleged complicity in the Holocaust, prosecutors said Thursday. Friedrich Karl Berger, 95, had been accused of aiding and abetting the killing of prisoners as a guard at two concentration camps in northern Germany, in particular by overseeing a brutal evacuation march. A court in March ordered his deportation from the US, where he has been living since 1959. The end of the German investigation will have 'no immediate effect' on the deportation proceedings as they are separate processes, prosecutors told AFP. It was not immediately clear whether US authorities would still push for his expulsion. Berger had admitted guarding prisoners in the camps, which were part of the infamous Neuengamme network, but said he had not observed any mistreatment or overseen an evacuation. There are also nominations for games that have only just been released, such as Assassin’s Creed Valhalla and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, each of which have two nominations. Some titles that have been around for a while are up for awards in the ongoing game, esports, community support and multiplayer categories. Among them are Fortnite, No Man’s Sky, Destiny 2 and Apex Legends. Voting is now open for this year’s Game Awards, which will stream live on December 10th.
The Last of Us Part 2 gathered 10 nominations, including a Game of the Year nod, to lead all nominees for The Game Awards 2020, announced on Wednesday. The five other video games tapped for GOTY also carried nominations in multiple categories, including the indie hit Hades, with nine overall. Hades, The Last of Us Part 2, Ghost of Tsushima and Final Fantasy 7 Remake were all nominated for GOTY as well as all three major development categories: game direction, narrative, and art direction. The other two GOTY nominees, Doom Eternal and Animal Crossing: New Horizons (which launched on the same date, incidentally) took four and three nominations, respectively. In all, 75 different games were nominated in 23 categories. Sony Interactive Entertainment is the most-nominated publisher, picking up 22. The Game Awards said that is second to the record-setting 23 Nintendo received in 2017. The Game Awards air on Dec. 10, 2020 on several live streaming services and platforms (a news release says 45 in all). The show will broadcast in a virtual format this year due to pandemic restrictions,...

Jimmy Garoppolo arrived as the 49ers’ franchise quarterback in a blockbuster trade from the Patriots only three years ago. But with the Super Bowl 54 starter dealing with his second major injury in three seasons, does this also mean his profitable time in San Francisco is finished? Garoppolo, who missed 13 games in 2018 with a torn ACL, is out again up to six weeks, on injured reserve with a high ankle sprain. He already had missed two games in 2020 and may end up only playing half the season, at best. Although the 49ers went 13-3 and won the NFC when Garoppolo was fully healthy last season, there has been a sense that he hasn’t maximized the potential of the team at the game’s most important position. Garoppolo has excellent key metrics with his 8.3 yards per attempt and 98.1 efficiency rating in his regular-season career stint in San Francisco. But the knock on his play has been about the throws he misses, the critical mistakes he makes and intended air yards that put him bottom-10 passing in the league. Coach Kyle...
What does the future hold? In our new series “Imagining the Next Future,” News Brig explores the new era of science fiction — in movies, books, TV, games, and beyond — to see how storytellers and innovators are imagining the next 10, 20, 50, or 100 years during a moment of extreme uncertainty. Follow along as we deep dive into the great unknown. Science fiction is a study of future worlds. Sometimes these are near-future worlds, ones that are only slightly off from our own. Other times, these worlds are set so far in the future that they’re nearly unrecognizable. That’s what makes designing the future so hard; the definition is always changing. It’s not always about flying cars and cybernetically enhanced bodies, but, of course, that’s cool, too. Video games have to be built in ever-changing technology, and yet science fiction games about the future manage to encompass all of these themes, imaging worlds across the spectrum. We asked game developers and creative teams about the process of creating future worlds. The Last of Us Part 2 ...
Late last month, 38 members of the University of Denver swimming and diving crew were suspended from team activities through the fall quarter for allegedly attending a large party in violation of COVID-19 safety protocols. But a source tells Westword that some of these athletes have continued throwing bashes so large and boisterous that the Denver Police Department has been notified. The DPD says it has received such complaints but is unable to confirm whether the incidents involved DU students, let alone swimmers or divers. The university can't verify that, either, but a statement provided to Westword contains heavy threats against anyone who might engage in such activities. Meanwhile, the Denver Department of Public Health & Environment reveals that it has imposed quarantines on seven DU Greek houses and hit one sorority with a criminal summons over a get-together that is said to have included several people with the virus.Related Stories Dear Denver Mask Haters: Stop Being A$$holes Trader Joe's COVID-19 Outbreak Part of Yet Another Colorado Record Denver Cites Walmart and More for Violating COVID-19 Health Orders The October 7...
Last month, the Denver Film Festival announced that its 43rd edition would unspool virtually as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. But now, there are a trio of exceptions. During the October 22 to November 8 event, DFF will screen three high-profile flicks using a drive-in format at Red Rocks that was pioneered over the summer for the 2020 Film on the Rocks program. The flicks include Nomadland, starring Frances McDormand, the Winston Duke-Zazie Beetz vehicle Nine Days, and Ammonite, a period romance headlined by Kate Winslet and Saoirse Ronan. Denver Film Festival director Britta Erickson says the idea of including in-person screenings as part of this year's offerings was cemented by the success of the Film on the Rocks experiment. "There's no beating the environment of Red Rocks and the way we had such a huge screen up there with our LED system," she allows. "They were pretty evenings."Related Stories Denver Film Festival Closes Out on a Winning Note Previewing the Denver Film Festival's Biggest Opening Night Ever Inside the Denver Film Festival's Salute to the Late Brit Withey Marijuana...
News broke last week that Arsenal, the stacked-with-talent but notoriously disappointing English soccer team, is laying off Gunnersaurus, its beloved mascot. Jerry Quy, the man inside the herbivorous costume for the mascot's entire 27-year existence, found out on October 5 that he was getting axed by the franchise, which is owned by Stan Kroenke, Colorado's most prolific sports-team owner. Luckily for Gunnersaurus and his fans, star Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil has publicly committed to pay Quy's salary for the remainder of Ozil's time with Arsenal. But what of Kroenke's other mascots? Particularly here in Colorado?Related Stories Stephen A. Last March, a person with mild COVID-19 symptoms went to a two-and-a-half-hour long chorale practice in Skagit Valley, Washington. In the weeks that followed, more than fifty people — nearly everyone who attended that rehearsal — contracted the disease and two people died. Shelly Miller, a mechanical engineering professor at the University of Colorado Boulder, led a recent study of that rehearsal, one of the nation’s first super-spreader events. The study states that singing indoors and unmasked can swiftly spread COVID-19 via microscopic airborne particles known as aerosols. In the study, she explains that although members of the chorale took precautions, like using hand sanitizer, avoiding touching each other or surfaces, and propping doors open, they didn’t wear masks. Members of the chorale were interviewed as part of the study, and researchers concluded that there simply were not enough opportunities for droplets and infected surfaces, known as fomites, to transmit the virus to the number of people who fell ill afterward. NBA : With a final victory over the Rockets in Game 5, the Lakers qualified for their first conference final in ten years. After their success (110-100) won with the manner during game 4, last Thursday in the Orlando bubble, the Lakers needed only a small victory against Houston to qualify for their first Western Conference final since 2010. A mission accomplished on the night of Saturday to Sunday, with a new demonstration at the key (119-96). Led by a LeBron James (29 points, 11 rebounds, 7 assists) still stunning despite his 35 years, the Angelinos started the beating drums part, taking advantage of their opponents’ largesse to lead 35-20 at the end of the first quarter time. The reaction of the Texans will be far too timid and LA even goes so far as to have a 30 point lead in this part. Harden holds his rank, Westbrook disturbing It must be said that on the Houston side, James Harden, too lonely, is the only one to have held his rank (30 points,...

Amy Johnston is carefully perched against the hip of her co-worker for the day, an animator by the name of Marianne Hayden. It’s a strange scene, to say the least: two grown women in a mismatched embrace, one of them decked out in a Tron-like suit fitted with bright orange and green panels. Johnston slowly wags her legs and rests her head on Hayden’s shoulder. “I loved it so much,” Johnston says. “It was very relaxing. It’s nice to be a baby.” Johnston, an experienced stuntwoman, was helping animators for The Last of Us Part II capture movement for an in-game baby. Rather than suit up a real baby (just imagine the complications there), Hayden had asked Johnston to sub in. A little bit of quiet head bobbing, some long and curious stares — Johnston did it all. Her best advice: move slowly. Very slowly. Nothing looks more nightmarish than a fast baby. Motion capture work is a crucial part of modern game design, one that allows developers to create more lifelike performances for their virtual worlds. Actors are rigged...
As for permadeath, it’s just what it sounds like. At its most aggressive, a single death ends your entire game. The truly insane can combine this with Grounded mode and see how far they can make it, but there are also more forgiving options. Permadeath can be set to “one day,” which means a death sends you back to the beginning of the day your character was playing through. Getting through an entire day without dying is still pretty challenging, so there’s also a “per chapter” permadeath. Given each day has about a half-dozen chapters, that should be a bit more manageable. Given the challenge of these modes, Naughty Dog is adding two new trophies to the game: one for beating it with any permadeath mode enabled, and one for beating it on Grounded difficulty. But if you want to get a platinum trophy for the game, fear not — these new trophies are a separate challenge. Naughty Dog also made some changes for those not obsessed with challenge, as well. In keeping with the game’s huge variety...
