Kia is hoping you’ll celebrate the launch of its new minivan, but not call it that. The 2022 Carnival replaces the Sedona in the lineup and Kia prefers to refer to it as multi-purpose vehicle so your kids aren’t mortified, I guess. The 2022 Kia Carnival is called a multi-purpose vehicle (Kia) Unfortunately for them, the fact is that it’s about the same size as a Honda Odyssey, Toyota Sienna or Chrysler Pacifica/Voyager and has sliding doors and a deep cargo area behind its third row, so it is very much a minivan. Its styling is boxier than any of those to give it more of an SUV look, however, and it has a pair of dashing chrome panels on the sides that act as shiny sideburns to add some unexpected flair. (Kia) Inside, the driver will appreciate a low window line that offers great forward visibility and a modern dashboard with dual widescreen digital displays for the instrument cluster and infotainment system. The center stack is filled with auxiliary controls, many of which are touchpads...

Many of the road accidents are due to human error. In this sense the electronic devices ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems, for its acronym in English), born to help and improve driving. We are not talking about an ‘autopilot’, they are dynamic systems that alert and, if necessary, intervene in risky situations, but do not exclude having to keep your attention behind the wheel. The ADAS can automate lighting, control speed based on signals, warn of possible obstacles and assist in lane departure, among other functions.. They are complex and evolving technologies that are usually associated with a high degree of ignorance about their operation. For our safety, and that of the rest of the road users, let us know these systems ADAS approved by the European Union and those that, without being required to install, are of great help to driving. The EU approved ADAS systems for passenger cars are as follows: Automatic emergency braking Radar and sensors as ADAS system to control the safety distance From just 5 km / h speed and driving at less than...

When Audi introduced us a few weeks ago to the first member of a new family of prototypes, my first thought was inevitable: the brand with the four rings has reinterpreted the Batmobile that most of us have dreamed of. The Audi Skysphere is the future of the brand: a luxury electric roadster in which to live captivating experiences. Audi is clear about one thing: it is no longer just about driving and that is why it is redefining the luxury vehicle segment. The Audi Skysphere debut at Peeble Beach is not a random choice: has been conceived at the Audi Design Studio in Malibu, located off the Pacific Coast Highway linking Los Angeles with Northern California. This is where Gael Buzyn and his team began to shape it by referencing the past. His source of inspiration has been Horch 853 roadster, which was the definition of modern luxury in the 1930s and won the Peeble Beach Contest of Elegance. With this starting point they have created an electric vehicle that offers two driving experiences, that of a grand...
Long summer trips by car require that we carry the vehicle in the best conditions, both for our comfort during the journey and to ensure road safety for everyone. You already know that the DGT is dedicated throughout the year to remind us of basic road regulations so that we do not forget that on the road the important thing is to arrive. That is why they share tricks, tips and rules that allow us travel safely, or at least according to what the authorities understand as prudent and safe. The last recommendation of the DGT has been published on Twitter with a very simple illustration, although they have lacked one last point that we will now add. As you already know from the title of the article, the advice is about the mirrors and their placement, giving the pertinent indications to have them focused perfectly. According to the tweet from the General Directorate of Traffic, the interior mirror of the car must be centered with the rear window, so that we can see well and without obstacles everything that...

Three House Democrats are moving to force the government to raise the safety standards governing car front seat backs, which may collapse during rear-end collisions and injure or kill passengers in the back seat. Representatives Kathleen Rice, of New York; Jan Schakowsky, of Illinois; and Diana DeGette, of Colorado introduced the Modernizing Seat Back Safety Act in the House Tuesday. In a press release, the lawmakers credited a CBS News investigation with prompting the legislative push to fix the issue.   Their bill would require the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, or NHTSA, to update its decades-old strength standard for vehicle seats to address failures during rear-end collisions within two years. Mercedes-Benz is big on SUVs. How big? It sells nine models in the U.S. that are so successful that it’s moving production of the next C-Class sedan from Alabama to South Africa to make room to build more. Mercedes-Benz still has a full lineup of cars, however, in part because they’re still popular in other parts of the world. But there’s one that splits the difference between them and the SUVs. (Mercedes-Benz) It’s the E 450 4MATIC All-Terrain, which you can think of as a short utility vehicle. It’s one of a handful of station wagons still available in the U.S., none of which are from domestic brands. It comes standard with all-wheel drive and about two inches of additional ground clearance compared to the rest of the E-Class lineup on which it is based, but still just 5.8 inches. Black plastic wheel arch covers and roof rails give it slightly rugged looks and power is provided by a 362 hp 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six-cylinder engine. It’s essentially Mercedes-Benz’s version of the similar "off-road" wagons from Volvo and Audi and...

It’s been two years since the first fully-electric Audi e-tron made its debut in SUV form. It has since been joined by a Sportback variant and, come later this spring, by a pair of all-wheel drive Grand Touring models — the RS e-tron GT and the e-tron GT quattro. Designed to perform equally well on both daily commutes and weekend road trips, Audi is positioning the RS GT and GT quattro front and center as the future of its fleet electrification efforts which seek 30 percent of its model portfolio to run on electricity by 2025. The first thing you’ll notice about the new models is that they are very much not SUVs with their large wheels, wide stance, flat silhouette, and long wheelbase. Not to mention that burly podracer-esque growl.  “One of our main design goals was we wanted the sound to be very much dependent on the current driving situation — we want it to be adaptive to the driver’s needs when the car is driving at slow speeds with low torques,” Stephan Herwig with Audi’s...

(Reuters) - U.S. firefighters battled crumbling ice in Long Island Sound to rescue two people trapped after a truck broke through and sank in the frigid waters beneath, authorities said on Tuesday. Social media images of the incident near the Connecticut city of Stamford showed rescuers extending an aerial ladder over the ice to reach the couple in the sinking vehicle. "The extreme winds, snow and tide continued to move the vehicle and cause it to fill with water," Matt Palmer, deputy chief of the Stamford Fire Department, said on its website, adding that the mishap came at the peak of a nor'easter storm. Snow up to 2 feet (61 cm) deep was dumped across the U.S. northeast on Monday and Tuesday, killing three people and shutting down transport. Some of the Stamford rescuers, wearing yellow protective suits, swam through the freezing waters of the Sound to pull the white pickup truck's occupants to safety before it sank completely in the 79-acre (32-hectare) beach-fringing Cummings Park. In its first report on its autonomous vehicle operations in Phoenix, Arizona, Waymo said that it was involved in 18 crashes and 29 near-miss collisions during 2019 and the first nine months of 2020. These crashes included rear-enders, vehicle swipes, and even one incident when a Waymo vehicle was T-boned at an intersection by another car at nearly 40 mph. The company said that no one was seriously injured and “nearly all” of the collisions were the fault of the other driver. The report is the deepest dive yet into the real-life operations of the world’s leading autonomous vehicle company, which recently began offering rides in its fully driverless vehicles to the general public. Autonomous vehicle (AV) companies can be a black box, with most firms keeping a tight lid on measurable metrics and only demonstrating their technology to the public under the most controlled settings. Indeed, Waymo, which was spun out of Google in 2016, mostly communicates about its self-driving program through glossy press releases or blog posts that reveal scant data about the actual nuts...
A Fair Lawn driver collected a $1 million settlement in a rear-end crash that his attorney said forced him to change jobs. Gjon Lahu, 35, stopped to let a pedestrian cross Fair Lawn Avenue in September 2017 when his vehicle was struck from behind. Lahu was seriously injured and required physical therapy, chiropractic treatment, epidural injections and other surgery as a result, his attorney, Mark McBratney of Siegel Law in Ridgewood, told NJLaw.com. Lahu, who was an auto mechanic at the time, had to take a less-strenuous job as a school custodian because of his injuries, McBratney said. Lahu sued the FDU student from Fair Lawn who was driving the vehicle that hit him, as well as her father, who owned it. They countered that Lahu’s injuries were “degenerative and pre-existing,” according to McBratney. Both sides settled in August, the attorney said.

Eli Wolfe September 9, 2020 11:29AM (UTC) This piece originally appeared on FairWarning. Andrew Warner was driving his family home from a Christmas party near Houston when they were rear-ended by a drunk driver. Warner's seat buckled, slamming backward into his infant daughter, Taylor. She suffered massive brain trauma and died less than a day later. In the decade since his child's death, Warner has learned that what happened to Taylor was no freak accident. While relatively rare, seatback failures have been injuring and killing people for decades. According to one estimate, roughly 50 children have been killed each year since 2001 in rear-end crashes, and experts say that some of those fatalities were likely from front seats collapsing backwards.   : For decades, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has required automakers to build seats strong enough to meet a safety standard.  But experts regard the standard, established more than 50 years ago, as laughably weak—several who spoke with FairWarning said that a lawn chair could pass it. In actual rear-end collisions, the seat pushing forward against the weight of a...
Toyota has designed a van for the COVID-19 age. (Monet Technologies) The automaker’s mobility venture Monet Technologies has unveiled a conversion of the Toyota Hiace Grand Cabin equipped with a ventilation system that’s been engineered to reduce the spread of viruses among passengers in the vehicle. (Monet Technologies) The system pulls fresh air in from outside and directs it down the center of the cabin to an exhaust at the rear. The driver’s compartment is isolated by a fixed bulkhead, while partitions and curtains separate the passenger seats, which are covered in vinyl for easy cleaning. (Monet Technologies) The conversion is being offered for approximately $7,000, but is only available in Japan at this time. Earlier this year, Honda built 10 vans with pressurized rear cabins for Detroit to help transport COVID-19 patients, but they were only meant to protect the driver from the passengers.
