Today’s discerning older adults are seeking the latest home looks and features in senior living. “We attribute some of the strong interest in our community to the undeniable style and modern features in our apartment homes,” says Santha Siegel, design coordinator, for The Mather, a Life Plan Community for those 62 and better projected to open in Tysons, Virginia, in 2024. “While our tagline ‘luxury of a different kind’ refers to lifestyle, it certainly applies to the stunning apartment homes being planned.” Functional & Flexible One trend in home design that seems to be universally popular is open floor plans—that is, home layouts where living rooms are partially or completely opened up into the kitchen and dining area. “People continue to request open-concept homes,” says Santha. “That’s where people across the country are spending their money, whether on new construction or renovations.” Apartment homes at The Mather will incorporate open plans, with spacious living areas that flow together...
MIAMI (CBSMiami/AP) – The Florida Agency for Health Care Administration has begun a process to revoke an assisted living home’s license in Lauderhill after a 69-year-old woman who went missing ended up dead in a car in the parking lot. Yvanne Moise left Victoria’s Retirement home on Sept. 18 and never returned, the South Florida SunSentinel reported. READ MORE: Miami Weather: Cooler And Drier Air Set To Move Into South FloridaThe state health care agency’s recent inspection said the facility lacked a plan required by state law to address Moise’s “severe or persistent mental condition.” And it did not have updated versions of those plans for seven of its 18 other residents who were also considered “limited mental health residents,” the newspaper reported. Moise didn’t sign out when she left the home on Sept. 18. The report said she repeatedly told a staff member she was going to leave, and by 8:30 that morning, she was nowhere to be found. The report said an employee watched her walk out the front gate and into the parking lot. Moise didn’t listen...
THE Turpin family children have claimed they were told "to Google it" when they asked for help from some guardians after their escape from their parents' House of Horrors. The 13 siblings were rescued from their Perris, California home almost four years ago when authorities found the children, who were between 2 to 29, living in their own filth and deprived of food and basic health care.  4The 13 Turpin children were rescued from their family home almost four years agoCredit: Refer to Caption 4Jordan Turpin was the one who escaped from her home and called the police, leading to her and her siblings' rescueCredit: ABC 20/20 Many hoped that once the siblings escaped their parents, they would be moving onto a brighter future and have stepped up to donate to the family. Unfortunately, that hasn’t been the case for some of the siblings as they reportedly do not have access to many of the resources and services that were promised to them. “They have been victimized again by the system,” said Mike Hestrin, the Riverside County district attorney, told...
Seth Rogen was slammed after dismissing car break-ins in LA as part-and-parcel of living in the city - as its revealed his property portfolio includes two very secure properties.    Rogen, 39, who owned a secure $2.5 million home in West Hollywood and currently lives in a $8 million ranch house in Hollywood Hills, told Casey Neistat that crime was just part of 'living in a big city.'   Neistat, 40, who used to be a prominent YouTuber in New York before moving to the West Coast, took to Twitter on Wednesday to tell his followers that 'our cars got robbed,' and blamed the city for being a 'crime riddled 3rd world s**thole of a city.' This caught the attention of Rogan, whose previous home was outfitted with steel gates and surveillance cameras, to tweet: 'Dude I've lived here for over 20 years. You're nuts haha. It's lovely here. Don't leave anything valuable in it. It's called living in a big city.'  Rogen owned two West Hollywood homes, once of which was sold last year. The other features a tall steel gate...
A man who sold his home in a bid to live a minimalist life spent a year living with just 44 possessions to help him become less materialistic.  Rob Greenfield, 35, from Asheville, North Carolina, first began whittling down his possessions ten years ago, after deciding to cull everything he hadn't used for six months.   Inspired by the idea of minimalist living, in 2015 Rob sold his three-bedroom apartment, eventually moving into a home he built himself using second hand materials.  In early 2020, Rob decided to cut down everything he owned to just 44 possessions, all of which he can fit inside a backpack, and spent a year travelling around the country.  Rob Greenfield, 35, from Asheville, North Carolina, spent a year living with just 44 possessions (pictured)  to help him become less materialistic In early 2020, Rob decided to cut down everything he owned to just 44 possessions, all of which he can fit inside a backpack (pictured), and spent a year travelling around the country 'Throughout the year I either lived with friends and used their washing and...

The 13 siblings rescued from a California 'House of Horrors' three years ago have been failed miserably by a social services system that was supposed to help them transition to new lives, according to a new report.  Then aged from two to 29, the siblings lived their lives in horribly abusive conditions that included being locked in their home for years, shackled to beds and starved by their parents before they staged a daring escape to contact police in 2018.  Now, Riverside County has hired a private law firm to look into allegations the seven adult and six minor children in the Turpin family did not get basic services they needed after they were freed from their parents' prison-like home, ABC News reported on Friday. A conservatorship, like the one Britney Spears was recently freed from, is allegedly preventing even the adult Turpins from accessing some $600,000 in donated funds, leaving them living in squalor and on the brink of homelessness.   There also is a criminal investigation of a foster family suspected of mistreating several children, including one of the Turpins, ABC...
MALIBU, Calif. (KABC) -- California's first-ever zero carbon home is officially on the market. Most people can't afford a $32 million home, but experts in design, engineering and carbon planning who built this six-bedroom, nine-bath ultra-luxury home are hoping everyone can benefit from what they've done."We're reaching out trying to make this the norm," said Jennifer Hoppel, the President of Burdge & Associates Architects. A Long Island man who became known as America's Most Famous Squatter after he went 23 years without paying the mortgage on the house he was living in has finally been evicted. Guramrit Hanspal, 52, who has been living in his three-bedroom, two-and-a-half bath East Meadow home for free for over 20 years was locked out of his home Friday morning. Nassau County Sheriff's deputies, who have attempted to evict Hanspal several times over the years, arrived at the house before 8 am on Friday with movers and a locksmith. The deputies knocked on the door and entered the Kenmore Street home when no one replied. Over the course of about three and a half hours, the movers cleared out the contents of the home loading everything from a stained couch and a stove to a child's electric truck into their vans. Three different owners have tried to kick Guramrit Hanspal, 52, from the three-bedroom, two-and-a-half bath East Meadow home (pictured) since he was foreclosed upon in 2000 Hanspal (pictured), who was living in his home for free for over...

The body of a deceased elderly woman who died in 2018 was dismembered and buried in the backyard of her Las Vegas home by at least two squatters who sold her car and lived off her wealth before being caught by police this spring, authorities said. Lucille Payne, 82, passed away while sitting in a chair and remained there for three years inside her Northwest Valley home before squatters mutilated her mummified body and dug up a shallow grave to bury her, according to police. 'After finding her, the decision was made between several people that they were going to dismember her body and bury her and then basically drain her finances and sell off her belongings, fraudulently,' Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Lt. Ray Spencer said. Payne's death had initially been ruled a homicide by blunt force trauma after investigators received a tip about two people seen digging, and authorities later found her body buried at the Shore Breeze Drive home in April.    Further investigation concluded the cause of Payne's death was 'undetermined,' Metro Police said.  Payne had no...

Courtesy Trulia Yes, the view is a major appeal of this hillside perch, but the creative minds behind this home—Mork-Ulnes Architects—embraced the location well beyond the gorgeous scenery. They wanted to integrate the home into its natural surroundings, which is one of the reasons they draped the entire exterior in Cor-Ten steel: the red of the material mirrors the red of the local soil. (CNN)Eight years ago, I came to the United States with the same vision that countless immigrants before me pursued -- a better future. Neeraj GautamAt 19, I left my family and home in Nepal to attend college in the United States. It may sound like a cliche, but the American Dream gave me a new drive in life. As a teenager, I had to grapple with massive questions about my future while watching a humanitarian crisis unfold in my home country. In 2015, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake hit Nepal, the biggest the country has had in almost a century. My parents' home was damaged, and many of our farm animals died. In the earthquake's aftermath, many Nepalese people have struggled to rebuild physically and emotionally. Though there was government and international aid, much of it failed to reach those in need due to corruption.Since the earthquake, nearly 15,000 Nepali people, including me, have received work authorization and protection from deportation under the US Temporary Protected Status program. But TPS is typically only extended for 18 months at a time, which...

"While we won't speculate on Mr. Singh's motivations, he decided to...
