In this article KR OCDO-GB Kroger's delivery vans double as a billboard. The company is using them to get out the word that it's now offering grocery deliveries in Florida.Melissa RepkoGROVELAND, Fla.— Kroger wants to attract tens of thousands of new customers in Florida — and it plans to do that without opening a single grocery store. Instead, the supermarket operator is relying on a giant warehouse of robots that help retrieve such products as bananas, milk and meat, and a fleet of delivery drivers that drop off online grocery orders at people's doors. The automated warehouse — big enough to fit nearly eight football fields — is a pricey bet for the grocer and an illustration of its e-commerce ambitions. Three years ago, Kroger struck a deal with British online grocer Ocado to build a network of customer fulfillment centers, which it calls sheds, across the U.S. It chose Ocado because of its track record in the United Kingdom, where it's gained popularity with customers. Kroger has opened two sheds so far, with plans for at least nine...

The announcement comes at a time when many people are having groceries delivered for convenience and want their items to arrive quickly. Kroger Co. said Tuesday that the service, called Kroger Delivery Now, will offer 25,000 items and reach up to 50 million homes. The company, which has more than 2,700 stores, will offer the service for its namesake stores as well as Ralphs, Fred Meyer, King Soopers, Fry’s, Mariano’s, and Smith’s locations. Chairman and CEO Rodney McMullen said in a statement that the grocery chain had more than $10 billion in online sales last year and anticipates doubling its online sales and profitability rate by the end of 2023, with the delivery service helping to achieve that goal. The “Get My Payment” tool is not the only one online to track the arrival of the third $ 1,400 stimulus check distributed by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) since two weeks. A worker collects shopping carts at a Walmart store on May 19, 2020 in Chicago, Illinois. Walmart reported a 74% increase in U.S. online sales for the quarter that ended April 30, and a 10% increase in same store sales for the same period as the effects of the coronavirus helped to boost sales.Scott Olson | Getty Images Walmart said Wednesday it plans to expand its use of high-tech systems that quickly pick and pack online grocery orders as it anticipates shoppers' demand for pickup and delivery will outlast the pandemic. Dozens of Walmart's stores will become local fulfillment centers, with a portion of those stores turned into small, automated warehouses, the company said. To accomplish this, Walmart will either use a store's existing footprint or add to it. In 2019, Walmart began testing one system called Alphabot at its Salem, New Hampshire store, and it immediately saw results. The system allowed the retailer to pick orders within minutes and have them ready for a customer within an hour of placing the order. As Walmart automates more stores, it...
Picture this: That expensive gift you spent weeks waiting for on back order finally gets delivered in time for the holidays, only to be swiped from your doorstep without a trace. Millions have fallen victim to package theft at some point, and the growth in online shopping during the coronavirus pandemic means porch pirates are on the prowl this holiday season. That’s why the United States Postal Inspection Service — the U.S. Postal Service’s dedicated law enforcement arm — is asking its users to familiarize themselves with how to stave off a missing parcel nightmare. For starters, postal inspectors suggest never leaving delivered mail and packages unattended whenever possible. Packages left in the open on front porches or mailboxes are a tempting target. Sign up for delivery notifications from your courier to determine when you have a package waiting. If you’re expecting a particularly large or valuable package and won’t be home to receive it, consider authorizing the courier to leave it in a specific, safer place — USPS lets you customize delivery instructions online. For those going out of...

The study asked 2,000 Americans how they’ve handled the novel coronavirus’ impact on their local communities and how they’re supporting each other in this difficult time. SWNS Seventy-one percent of those surveyed said they’re now shifting their shopping habits to supporting small and local businesses rather than big corporations or chains. Conducted by OnePoll on behalf of Canva, the survey found that 79 percent of respondents said the COVID-19 pandemic has changed their perspective on just how important small businesses are to their communities. Uber is launching an on-demand grocery delivery service in Latin America and Canada, the company announced on Tuesday. It’s Uber’s first major move into the competitive world of online grocery shopping since acquiring Cornershop, a leading online grocery provider in Chile, Mexico, Peru, Canada, Brazil, and Colombia. Grocery delivery will be available through both Uber’s main app and its Uber Eats app. Customers will see food delivery available from local grocery stores and will be able to receive their orders “in as little as one to two hours,” according to Uber Eats head of product Daniel Danker. The service is available starting today in 19 cities across Latin America and Canada. Later this month, it will be available in the US, Danker said. And when it launches, it will be included in Uber’s subscription services, Rider Pass and Eats Pass, in which customers can get free delivery on orders over $30. “I think this would make a lot of sense in a pre-COVID world.” The announcement also comes on the heels of Uber’s $2.65 billion acquisition of Postmates....
