Conservative pundit Candace Owens drew heat Thursday on Twitter for denigrating Juneteenth after she posted a tweet calling the holiday “sooo lame.” Earlier in the day, President Joe Biden signed into law the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act, after it passed unanimously in the Senate and was overwhelmingly approved by the House, with 14 Republicans voting against. Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when Union forces informed slaves in Texas that the Civil War had ended, and that slavery had been abolished. Owens responded to the newest official holiday by calling it “soooo lame” and suggested that the bipartisan recognition of the day was somehow an example of Democrats “trying to repackage segregation.” Juneteenth is soooo lame. Democrats really need to stop trying to repackage segregation. I’ll be celebrating July 4th and July 4th only. I’m American. ???????? — Candace Owens (@RealCandaceO) June 17, 2021 The inevitable roasting soon commenced. Candace Owens is soooo far in the sunken place… Listen, #JuneTeenth2021 IS an American Holiday & it unites us to celebrate freedom from the worst form of chattel slavery...

But what I do know for sure is that if “holiday” itself has now become a dirty word, then we are all getting something rather wrong. I understand it when people say that while the rage of this pandemic still has fire on it, a holiday can’t be a top priority. Yet I also winced a bit when Tory MP Sir Charles...

Now that the winter season is approaching and there are less hours of daylight each day, people may begin to experience a type of depression called seasonal affective disorder, also known as SAD. Symptoms typically start when the days get shorter in the fall and winter and subside in the spring, when there are longer daylight hours. This happens each winter season and is known as the “winter blues.” Paul Kurkjian, M.D., MemorialCare Long Beach Medical Center  This year especially, the “winter blues,” combined with the anxieties and loneliness that the COVID-19 pandemic has caused, are making depression rates higher than ever, especially in the older adult population. Since so many of the safety precautions surrounding COVID-19 are directed at isolation of older adults. To say that many of us are experiencing some not so positive health effects related to the nearly year-long pandemic is likely a gross understatement. As the pandemic wears on, collectively, there’s a growing sense of fatigue related to the safety measures implemented by local and state public health departments. Symptoms of depression, anxiety disorder, substance use disorder, and suicidal ideation have increased dramatically between the months of April and June 2020 compared to the same period the prior year. The Centers for Disease Control reported survey data that suggests that out of nearly 5,500 respondents, over half reported at least one adverse mental health experience in the past 30 days. Of important note, adverse conditions were more prevalent among unpaid caregivers for adults than among those who were not, with particularly large differences in increased substance use (32.9% versus 6.3%) and suicidal ideation (30.7% versus 3.6%) in this group. David Hart, MD  As the holidays near, the sadness related to missing people and traditions in our lives is becoming more pronounced. The empty seats at our dining table are...
