When people listen to stories, they subconsciously synchronise their heart rates with the narrative — and, therefore, each other — a study has demonstrated.  The finding builds on previous studies that found that people often sync up bodily functions like heartbeats or breathing when undergoing a shared experience.  Experts led from the Paris Brain Institute found a similar phenomenon occurs even when people are listening to a story on their own, as long as they pay attention. The finding could help to develop a new and easy-to-administer hospital test to determine the level of a given patient's consciousness. Police are considering charges after two teenage girls who were the subjects of a statewide Amber Alert in Texas allegedly staged their abduction, Fox 4 reported Tuesday. The 16-year-old and 17-year-old girls traveled with a music teacher to a flea market in Seagoville on Sunday to sing at a flea market, Fox 4 reported. The girls separated from the teacher at the event, and stopped answering phone calls, prompting the teacher to call police, authorities reportedly said. One of the girls called her mother later Sunday night, and claimed she and the other teenager were kidnapped and were being held against their will, Fox 4 reported. Police tracked the call to a motel in Dallas, but once they arrived, the girls were nowhere to be found. Police authorized a statewide Amber Alert in an effort to find the girls, and continued their search Monday morning.  But the evidence investigators began reviewing suggested something else had taken place, and it likely wasn’t a forced abduction. Pfizer reported that its two-dose COVID-19 vaccine is 100% effective at preventing infection of the highly contagious variant first detected in South Africa. The company also reported that the two-dose vaccine developed with German firm BioNTech provided continued high levels of protection against illness for six months after the shots were administered, setting the manufacturer on the path toward full regulatory approval from the federal government. PFIZER VACCINE NEUTRALIZES KEY VARIANTS, EASING ONE OF BIGGEST FEARS ABOUT PANDEMIC “The high vaccine efficacy observed through up to six months following a second dose and against the variant prevalent in South Africa provides further confidence in our vaccine’s overall effectiveness,” Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla said in a statement Thursday. Of the 800 participants enrolled at the South Africa trial site, nine cases were identified — only in subjects who had received the placebo. The 100% efficacy rate will likely mollify researchers who have feared that the B.1.351 variant out of South Africa would evade protection provided by the vaccine. The Pfizer-BioNTech researchers also concluded through surveillance...

The UMass Medical School is seeking to enroll several hundred volunteers in the next two trial phases. Tests on the vaccine are being conducted here as well as at 120 other centers across the U.S. The trial needs 30,000 volunteers. There are 15,000 people enrolled so far, the researchers said.
