By Issam Abdallah BEIRUT (Reuters) - Near the wreckage of Beirut's port, a charity is bringing Christmas cheer to a city hammered by a devastating explosion, rising coronavirus infections and the worst economic crisis since Lebanon's 1975-1990 civil war. The Solidarity Christmas Village, decked out with flashing fairy lights and glittering trees, has been offering visitors free entry to watch concerts and pick up drinks and snacks, lifting the mood of families who can't afford seasonal luxuries. People dressed in giant polar bear costumes and others in Santa Claus outfits offer some festive spirit to a country that is a patchwork of Christian and Muslim sects. "We need to make our children happy .... even if we are tired," said Toni Hossainy, who had brought her son. The Christmas village has been set up in a temporary warehouse near the port, flattened by a huge explosion on Aug. 4 which also ruined a swathe of the capital. Near the port's shattered entrance, an artist erected a towering Christmas tree decorated not with shiny baubles but with grimy protective clothing and...

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — No large crowds, fewer vendors, social distancing reminders and hand sanitizing stations. While Philadelphia’s Christmas Village looks different this year, the feeling is still the same. It’s definitely not the usual turnout you’d see at Christmas Village, but that’s a good thing now that we have to be extra cautious this holiday season. With only half the number of vendors, there’s still lots to choose from. “You need something to create a spirit of holiday, and that’s why I’m here. I’m bringing the ornaments,” said vendor Lucy Yolkina-Strak. “We’re lucky that the City of Philadelphia has recognized the importance of the Christmas Village to the city,” said John Murray with the Irish Shop. To keep things in order, vendors are located on the perimeter of Christmas Village, making it easy for those browsing. “Hope to do as much business as we can,” said Brian Kauffman with Sockadelphia. The new layout means visitors must enter at the designated entrance so organizers can keep a count of the number of people entering and exiting the village. “It’s great to...

This vacation will be even more magical with the expansion of The Pauline and Austin Neuhoff Christmas Village at the Dallas Arboretum. Inspired by European Christmas markets, or Christkindlmarket, the Christmas village is made up of charming shops and facades that represent a picturesque European village. In total, 14 lovely shops and facades debuted in 2019 and this year it’s bigger. But the big news this year is the handcrafted Christmas pyramid in Germany, which stands 23 feet tall and is decorated with hand-carved elements and beautiful illuminated movements on all levels. Christmas Pyramid is the perfect addition to the Christmas Village and is the signature feature of Pyramid Square along with three new shops, including an Edelweiss Haus with food and drink, a chocolate shop and a toy store. Known for their beautiful craftsmanship and carpentry, German craftsmen from the Erzgebirge (Ore Mountains) region created the octagon-shaped Christmas pyramid. Sculpting each figure by hand, 15 workers spent 2,150 hours designing and building this unique, handcrafted pyramid. Each of the four levels rotates and...
