by Bethany Blankley  California gasoline prices reached the highest they’ve been since March 9, 2020, hitting $3.27 a gallon, according to a new gasoline benchmark published by the U.S. Energy Information Administration. California gas prices are roughly 66 cents more than average price paid by consumers nationwide. PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Rising crude oil prices and tightening supply have helped drive up the average price of a gallon of gas in Rhode Island by 5 cents, AAA Northeast said Monday. The current per-gallon average of $2.17 is a nickel lower than the national average of $2.22, and 35 cents lower than the Rhode Island price one a year ago. Rising crude oil prices and tightening supply are driving up prices at the pump, AAA said in a statement. Oil prices have not been this expensive since February, before the coronavirus pandemic struck. “The recent gas price pump jumps are a bit surprising given December demand numbers are the lowest posted for the month since 1999,” AAA spokesperson Mary Maguire said. “The increases are likely to be short-lived, especially as holiday road travel is expected to see at least a 25% decline.” Copyright 2020 The Associated Press.
