ATLANTA (AP) — Coming off one of the worst performances in franchise history, the Atlanta Falcons have only a few days to turn things around. If rookie coach Arthur Smith can’t get things fixed — and quickly — the Falcons could be in for another grim game against one of the NFL’s hottest teams. Atlanta (4-5) was thoroughly embarrassed Sunday by the Dallas Cowboys, losing 43-3 in a de facto scrimmage that was over by halftime. “I’ve got to do a better job of getting them prepared,” Smith said. “Clearly we weren’t prepared coming in here.” The Falcons trailed 36-3 at halftime — the second-largest deficit in franchise history at the midway point of a game. The only time they were further behind at the break was in 1967, the team’s second season in the NFL, when they trailed Johnny Unitas and the Baltimore Colts 35-0. “It falls on me,” Smith said “We’re lucky it only counts as one.” Indeed, this performance was such a stinker, it probably deserves to be counted as two or three losses. But the...

They've hardly even been in the conversation, notching only four playoff victories in that span. Yet the Cowboys are the most-valuable NFL franchise, topping the New England Patriots, who have won six Super Bowls since Dallas last took home the Vince Lombardi trophy. Despite decades of mediocrity, the Cowboys are always in the headlines, thanks to a brand that's almost universally recognized. "They have that slogan that kind of sticks," said former NFL wide receiver Terrell Owens, who played for the Cowboys from 2006 to 2008. "They are America's Team." Fans now have a reason to get excited about what's happening on the gridiron. After an injury-riddled season last year that saw the team finish 6-10, the Cowboys are 5-1 in the new campaign, riding a five-game win streak and...

The Kansas City Chiefs are in last place in the AFC West and the Cincinnati Bengals are in first place in the AFC North. The Las Vegas Raiders and Denver Broncos are undefeated. Sam Darnold has been good. Ben Roethlisberger has been bad. Aaron Rodgers has been both. And somewhere in all that chaos, the Dallas Cowboys were rocked by some early roster attrition and somehow got better the past two weeks. Better on defense. Better on special teams. And more balanced and bullying than ever on offense. So much so that after Monday night — when a short-handed Dallas defense helped drill the Philadelphia Eagles 41-21 — the Cowboys look like they’ve got something cooking. Maybe even to the point of playing their way into the conversation of NFL elites after next week’s tilt against a surprisingly stout 3-0 Carolina...

The Dallas Cowboys took a 14-11 lead into halftime against the Los Angeles Chargers, but their advantage almost grew in spectacular fashion as they came close to pulling off a miracle play at the end of the second quarter. In the final seconds of the half at SoFi Stadium, Dak Prescott escaped the pocket and rolled to his left before connecting with CeeDee Lamb on a short pass. Re-signing Dak Prescott is the safe choice for the Cowboys, but making a trade up in the 2021 NFL Draft for Ohio State’s Justin Fields might be a stroke of genius for Dallas.  Most Cowboys fans are fixated on how their favorite team can lock up Dak Prescott for the long haul this offseason. Admittedly, that’s the most likely course of action for Dallas. A more interesting idea might be engineering a way to land Justin Fields in Big D. The Ohio State signal-caller is the consensus No. 2 quarterback in this year’s draft class. He does offer some things that likely No. 1 overall selection Trevor Lawrence does not. Namely, Fields projects to be the type of runner who can give NFL defenses fits when he breaks loose from the pocket. Adding that extra dimension to the Cowboys offense could prove deadly for head coach Mike McCarthy and his staff. When healthy, Prescott is a mobile quarterback who can take what the defense gives him, but he isn’t a big-play threat. Fields is a player who can turn broken...

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — The Dallas Cowboys won a game thanks to a watermelon kick and are now 2-0 after smashing said fruit as a motivational tactic the night before each victory. If that doesn’t say it all about the pandemic-altered 2020 season, then how about the woeful NFC East offering the guarantee that a team will go from 2-7 to the playoffs for the first time in NFL history, according to Sportradar? Dallas (6-9) is one of those three teams, with the winner between the Cowboys and New York Giants (5-10) from early Sunday getting in if Washington loses at Philadelphia in prime time. Washington (6-9) simply needs to win to advance. Andy Dalton, 4-4 since replacing Dak Prescott after the star quarterback’s season-ending ankle injury, has directed a three-game winning streak after beating the Eagles 37-17, and the former Cincinnati starter has the Cowboys playing for a lot more than 2021 momentum. That was the goal a few weeks ago, when first-year coach Mike McCarthy noted that a four-game winning streak to finish his rough Green Bay...
Could Kellen Moore really leave the Cowboys and take the Boise State job? Boise State thought they had a coach that would lead them for the next decade in former quarterback Bryan Harsin, but he surprised many when he took the head coaching job at Auburn. Hiring a former Boise quarterback with a cutting-edge offensive mind worked out pretty well for them when they brought Harsin back, and they have their eyes set on another legendary Boise signal-caller to replace him. The Atlanta Falcons didn't make a move on the ball, allowing the Cowboys to steal a win. Dak Prescott plans to be at training camp with the Dallas Cowboys, if and when it starts, on the richest one-year contract in franchise history. There is also still time to work out a long-term deal for the star quarterback. Prescott signed his $31.4 million tender under the franchise tag Monday. That comes just over three weeks before the July 15 deadline to agree on a long-term deal. By signing the offer under the franchise tag, Prescott is obligated to report for all team activities or risk being fined. He didn’t participate in the club’s virtual offseason program while unsigned. Prescott played the final year of his rookie contract on just a $2 million salary. He was the 2016 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year while leading the Cowboys to the NFC’s top seed in the playoffs and won his first postseason game two years later. There has never been a question of whether Prescott is the franchise quarterback in Dallas. Owner Jerry Jones has repeatedly made that clear as the sides have spent more than a...

It’s indisputable that the current Dallas Cowboys roster is night-and-day better than the 2019 outfit. It’s also indisputable that the Cowboys’ roster — like any NFL roster — is not without flaw. Former Dallas vice president of player personnel-turned-respect league analyst Gil Brandt pinpointed the team’s biggest area of need and its consequential concerns in a recent piece for NFL.com. Brandt took aim at the Cowboys’ secondary, which, despite an offseason remodeling, still brings about more questions than answers heading into the 2020 campaign. The franchise that once fielded safeties Cliff Harris, Darren Woodson and Roy Williams has not had a true impact player at either starting safety spot in a decade-plus. That drought will likely continue into 2020, unless Dallas trades for someone like Jamal Adams — but I wouldn’t hold my breath there. As much as this appears to be a position of need, the Cowboys don’t seem to agree, based on the fact that they’ve selected just one safety in the first two rounds since choosing Williams in 2002. The plan right now seems to be to...
Dallas Cowboys’ Aldon Smith is looking to make a comeback after reportedly being reinstated into the NFL last week, and head coach Mike McCarthy says the defensive end's “bigger and stronger” than when he last saw him play. McCarthy had nothing but praise for Smith in a video conference with reporters on Wednesday. CAM NEWTON COULD BE JUST WHAT NEW ENGLAND NEEDS, FORMER PATRIOT SAYS “He is such an impressive young man and his path to Dallas is special and unique, so just thankful and blessed to be a part of this opportunity with him,” McCarthy said, according to an NBC Sports report. “You know, he wants to get back professionally and be productive. He’s in great physical shape. It will be exciting to see him get out there for the first time.” Smith last played in the NFL in 2015 when he played for the Oakland Raiders but was suspended because of legal issues, including allegations of domestic violence and multiple DUI charges which extended his yearlong suspension into an indefinite one, according to Bleacher Report.
