New York (CNN Business)As the pandemic drags on, big chains like Target and Nordstrom are looking for ways to keep consumers coming back to their stores. One go-to strategy is the store-within-a-store concept. It's a way for one retailer to join forces with another by setting up a pop-up shop within their stores. Industry analysts say the approach has benefits for both parties. For instance, department store Kohl's (KSS) is adding as many as 200 Sephora mini shops inside of its stores in 2021 as a way to expand its beauty and cosmetics category. For Sephora, the deal helps the retailer expand its market to Kohl's shoppers.Meanwhile, Target is opening mini Apple shops in a handful of its stores as it strives to become a one-stop shop to meet all of its consumers' needs."From Sephora co-locating in Kohl's to Apple in Target stores, these collaborations bring complementary customer traffic and added income, especially for the host retailer," said Burt Flickinger III, managing director of Strategic Resource Group. It's also a way to get shoppers to visit stores more frequently, he said.Read...

We've already seen a number of big names, like J.C. Penney (OTC: JCPN.Q) and Neiman Marcus declare bankruptcy, and while some chains may thrive in the aftermath of a filing, others, like Lord & Taylor, are shutting their doors permanently. That's bad news for malls, which rely on department stores to serve as anchor tenants, drawing in customers and helping to entice new stores to sign on and pay rent. Of course, it's easy to point a finger at the coronavirus outbreak and attribute department stores' failings to an unprecedented pandemic. But the reality is that many department stores have been struggling for years with sluggish foot traffic and high overhead costs. In fact, the fear among mall operators and mall REIT, or real estate investment trust, investors...

This year, the big move came from Nordstrom, which just announced they will be banning the sale of furs and exotic skins in their stores and online by the end of 2021. While companies like Macy's and Bloomingdale's made headlines for banning fur from their stores last year, Nordstrom has taken its commitment to change even further by being the first to also ban the use of exotic...
Nordstrom on Tuesday became the first major US retailer to say it will stop selling products made from fur and exotic skins. The upscale department store’s announcement comes a year after Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s said they will no longer sell fur. But it goes a step further by banning products made from the skins of alligators, crocodiles, pythons, kangaroos and ostrich, according to the Humane Society of the United States, which has been working with the department stores.  The Nordstrom ban will go into effect in 2023, the company said. “Our private label brands haven’t used these materials for years, so extending this policy to all the brands we carry is a natural next step for our business,” said Nordstrom’s chief merchandising officer, Teri Bariquit. Dozens of major designers and brands, including Chanel, Calvin Klein, Gucci, Tommy Hilfiger and Michael Kors have adopted similar policies in recent years as more consumers demand it.  Even Canada Goose, known for the signature coyote-fur trim on its pricey jackets, will stop using coyote fur starting in 2022, the company said in April....

NEW YORK (AP) — Nordstrom Inc. on Tuesday reported a larger-than-expected loss and a 53% drop in sales for its fiscal second quarter, during which the pandemic forced the upscale department store chain to temporarily close its stores. The Seattle-based retailer’s business was also hurt by the shift of its anniversary sales from the fiscal second quarter that ended Aug. 1 to the third quarter. Like many department stores and other non-essential retailers, Nordstrom was forced to temporarily shutter stores and furlough workers when the pandemic was declared in mid March. Nordstrom’s stores have now reopened but stores were temporarily closed during half of the fiscal second quarter. During the fiscal first quarter, Nordstrom cut inventory by more than 25% to reduce markdowns. As a result, profit margins on merchandise in the second quarter improved and exceeded the company’s expectations. While sales were in line with company expectations, business was constrained by the flow of inventory, which steadily improved throughout the quarter, the company said. In July, Nordstrom increased inventory to meet customer demand, “At the onset of...
