Banks is being held on a $75,000 bond. What else? Hernandez's father — who, along with his wife, now has custody of the couple's two young children — told the station that his daughter was always smiling and always happy. "She was having problems with him," he admitted. "But she would always go back to him." He recalled, "She was just here on Monday. She was playing with the kids. They called us in the middle of the night to tell us she was dead.” Neighbors told police that they could hear screaming from the couple's apartment at least once per week.
In the aftermath of last week's verdict in the Kyle Rittenhouse trial, some commentators saw the acquittal of a white Illinois teenager as an indictment of America. 'There's a two-tiered system here, where [black Americans] don't have the right to self-defense, in the same way [as white Americans],' CNN political commentator Van Jones said on Cuomo Prime Time on November 22.  'I don't have a Second Amendment right, in the same way.'  Jones claimed to be giving voice to a 'pain' in the black and progressive communities that apparently believe America's laws are not applied equally. 'There's still pain here about the sense of difference,' continued Jones. 'We don't have the right to self-defense and Second Amendment in the same way that others do.' Over the last six days, there have been three different murder cases that provide data points to help evaluate these concerns over the fair application of self-defense laws in American courtrooms.  3 CASES, 3 DIFFERENT OUTCOMES: (Left) Travis McMichael was found guilty for the murder of Ahmaud Arbery. (Center) Andrew Coffee IV was acquitted on felony murder and attempted...
CASTRO VALLEY —  The unforgettable horror that would last a year began when she was 12, with daily inappropriate  touching of different parts of her body, including her vagina and buttocks. It quickly escalated to rape and other sex acts that went on for months despite her pleas to the alleged assailant to stop that fell on deaf ears, authorities said. The terrifying acts that authorities and court records allege were committed by the then boyfriend of the girl’s mother,  ended in December 2016 when her mother broke up with him and she and her children moved out of the Castro Valley home where they had been living with him. The now 18-year-old woman never told her family at the time about her ordeal but wrote a graphic, emotional  poem on her computer that described what she had gone through. It was that poem, which her mother discovered on the computer in June, that initiated an investigation by the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office Special Victims Unit. The investigation led to the filing in September of 12 felony crimes, including multiple...
BASTIAN SCHWEINSTEIGER has claimed that Manchester United's David De Gea was fuming when he told him he wasn't better than Manuel Neuer. Schweinsteiger, 37, played alongside De Gea at Man Utd for just under two seasons and recently recounted when the Spaniard asked for his opinion. 1Schweinsteiger joined United for £6.5m in 2015 after 17 years at Bayern MunichCredit: Copyright 2017 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, Schweinsteiger said: "When I first came to Manchester United De Gea said, 'Tell me, am I better than Neuer?' "I was like 'No, you're not. It is a different level.' He was angry, but I explained why. "Whenever he had a great game he would ask me again, I would still say he wasn't on that level." Four-time Man Utd player of the year De Gea, 31, has been in excellent form for the Red Devils so far this season, despite their disappointing run of results. But he has often been in Neuer's shadow throughout his career, with the German winning the IFFHS World's Best...
MANCHESTER UNITED legend Sir Alex Ferguson's transfer policy was like a "slow conveyor belt" according to his former defender Gary Neville. Unsurprisingly during his 26 years at Old Trafford the boss oversaw a whole host of big name incomings and departures. 4 Gary Neville discussed Fergie's 'conveyor belt' transfer policy 4 Sir Alex Ferguson helped developed some of football's best talents But there were methods behind the purchases, and evidently the system worked. Fergie won 38 trophies, including 13 Premier League titles, five FA Cups, and two Champions League titles during his legendary spell in the hotseat. And according to Neville, who was the first-choice right-back during his own trophy-laden 19-year spell at United, transfer policy was split into three categories. Speaking on the Sky Sports podcast, the 46-year-old footie pundit said: "His policy was to promote youth wherever possible, that was number one before he even looked at the external market. "Number two was to look at the best in the Premier League, those he could trust, and still have growth and be with the club for a long...
(CNN)Paul Rudd is objectively cute. He's funny. He's a family man. He is charitable. But ... sexy?People magazine's selection of Rudd as this year's Sexiest Man Alive came as a surprise to some, including Rudd, according to Dan Wakeford, the Editor-in-Chief of People, who said the actor was "baffled" by the honor. But after speaking with Wakeford, I came to understand how People made their choice. I even came away kind of swooning for Rudd. Our delightful conversation about this very important topic, which has been lightly edited for length and clarity, follows below. CNN: Does the debate for the Sexiest Man Alive (SMA) cover get intense?Wakeford: People staff meetings [for SMA] really should be a reality show. It's like an intense debate with legal style arguments. There are suddenly raised voices and a lot of passion. We at People, we take our journalism very, very seriously and we take who we're choosing very seriously, because it does lead the national conversation for that day. When you're on the cover of the Sexiest Man Alive issue, you are the most talked...
“I’m fascinated by the possibility of creating a movie that has a simple structure,” explains director Pablo Larraín. “It starts with an emotional crisis that develops into something that could be related to mental health—and how reality can be a ghost—and then it evolves into a healing process. We play with the tool of cinema, but most importantly we are inside of her.” The Chilean filmmaker is describing Jackie, his portrait of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis in the wake of her husband’s assassination, and now Spencer, which follows Princess Diana (Kristen Stewart) over the course of three fateful days—Christmas Eve to Boxing Day—at Sandringham, the Queen’s royal estate, as she builds up the courage to put Prince Charles and the rest of the suffocating British royal family in her rearview mirror. Both Jackie and Spencer toe the line between high art and camp, absurdism and intimacy, melodrama and horror, with the latter owing a considerable debt to Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights and John Cassavetes’ A Woman Under the Influence, a film that Larraín and Stewart discussed a lot during the course...
Michael Schneider likes to say that there’s more to roadkill than most people think. The Los Gatos resident grew up in Colorado, and he frequently came across dead animals on the side of the road, usually after they’d been struck by a passing car or truck. It was just a fact of life: Cars and wildlife frequently collided, often with deadly results. When Schneider moved to Summit Road in the Santa Cruz Mountains, the problem existed here, too. The problem was just as big as Schneider had suspected. Roadkill has historically been a major problem in California. According to Reuters, collisions with wildlife cost the state $276 million in 2016. Throughout the state, thousands of animals are killed on roadways every day, according to a UC Davis researcher. About a year ago, Schneider was talking with his mother’s boyfriend, who is from Texas. He, too, was used to seeing roadkill during the course of his day. As they talked, Schneider started to think of ways he could help. A self-proclaimed serial entrepreneur, he knew that a solution was possible. He...
THOMAS TUCHEL hailed his set-piece coaching specialist and said 'it is a good sign' after Andreas Christensen scored his first in 137 GAMES. But his manager was quick to credit Anthony Barry, a member of his coaching staff who specialises in set-pieces. Tuchel wrote in Chelsea's pre-match programme: "It is important for us that we have many different players performing and we have many different goalscorers this season. "I said after the Malmo game last week that it is a good sign when Andreas starts to score - and I think our set-piece coach, Anthony Barry, can be very, very proud! "It is important to be able to score in situations like this and it is...

FORMER wonderkid Freddy Adu is now 32 years old, without a club, and staring at the last knockings of a career full of 'what might have beens'. The original golden child the American exploded onto the scene when he was just 14 when he was signed by MLS giants DC United. 10Freddy Adu was the original wonderkid dubbed the 'American Pele'Credit: Getty Then, at the same age, he became the youngest scorer in US professional football with a goal against New Jersey MetroStars, who later became the New York Red Bulls. That prompted Nike to snap Adu up on a $1million (£730,000) sponsorship deal, while ESPN said he was a better sporting prospect than Lebron James. Even Brazilian legend Pele compared the prodigy to Mozart for displaying such an incredible ability at such a young age. However, Adu's career soon became a thing of disappointment - with the pressure of being America's great hope too much and expectation becoming a burden. After a failed trial at Man Utd, spells in Portugal with Benfica and Monte Carlo with Monaco, Adu...
Courtesy of the Minnesota Historical SocietyGeorge Bonga, ca.1870Fur trader and translator George Bonga was one of the first African Americans born in what later became the state of Minnesota. His mother was Ojibwe, as were both of his wives. Through these relationships, Bonga was part of the mixed racial and cultural groups that connected trading companies and American Indians. He frequently guided white immigrants and traders through the region. Comfortable in many worlds, Bonga often worked as an advocate for the Ojibwe in their dealings with trading companies and the government. Around 1802, George Bonga was born to an African American father and his Ojibwe wife. His father, Pierre Bonga, was the son of Jean Bonga. Jean had been brought to Mackinac Island after the American Revolution by a British officer. Either an enslaved man or an indentured servant, Jean Bonga was freed by the British soldier’s death. He married and started a family. Pierre Bonga, meanwhile, worked in the fur trade with the Ojibwe near Duluth. George’s younger brother, Stephen Bonga, was also a notable fur trader and translator...

With the trailer for Spider-Man: No Road Home, Marvel fans exploded with excitement when they saw Alfred Molina (Spider-Man 2 – 93%, Frida – 76%, Beautiful Revenge – 90%) again in his role as Doctor Octopus, and earlier by catching a rather explicit reference to Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin (The Last Temptation of Christ – 82%, Born on July 4 – 90%, Antichrist – 70%), his grenade and his ghoulish laugh. The success of the trailer was so great that it became the most viewed and commented on in its first 24 hours of all history, even above the Avengers: Endgame trailer – 95%. The Y: The Last Man series has come a long way to streaming. But judging by the attention and effort HULU is putting into its production, it was worth the effort. Brian K. Vaughan and artist Pia Guerra’s modern comic book classic of the same name is one of the platform’s most ambitious projects that we will soon be able to see on Star +, the new Disney Plus channel. And according to what has transpired from the television plot, the series will adapt the best of history on paper. It is also a peculiar response to the success of The Handmaid’s Tale. In fact, both series seem to dialogue about the same thing from different ends of the spectrum. Y: The Last Man, which will premiere in September on HULU, is also a risky experiment. With his groundbreaking discourse on gender, identity and culture, he will undoubtedly be a center of controversy. We leave everything to you what we know so far about its production and filming details. ‘Y: The Last Man’, a dark, painful and possible...

TOKYO (AP) — Swimming is nothing if not orderly. Get ready for a little chaos. Here comes the 4×100-meter mixed medley relay making its Olympic debut in Tokyo on Saturday: Two men and two women per country doing backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly and freestyle. The teams get to decide who swims each stroke, so a woman from one team and a man from the other could be doing the butterfly, say, at the same time. “I was probably a bit skeptical when it first came on the program, but I’m so thrilled that it’s now an Olympic event,” Australian sprinter Cate Campbell said. “It keeps you on the edge of your seat until the very last moment.” FINA, the sport’s world governing body, added two mixed relays to its program at the 2015 world championships in Kazan, Russia, where the 4×100 mixed freestyle relay also debuted. While there are no restrictions on whether a man or woman swims which stroke, there are some general strategies that teams follow at the highest levels for the mixed relay. Most teams put a woman...

It's one of the most famous images in the history of scientific endeavour. The Road To Homo Sapiens, by American-based artist Rudolph Zallinger, is a convenient shorthand to show the gradual evolution from primitive crawling apes to upright walking mankind. The image was created for a children’s book in the mid-1960s and has since appeared in humorously subverted versions everywhere, from T-shirts to The Simpsons.
