PEOPLE are increasingly looking for employers who give back to their communities and have a positive impact on society, as well as offering workplace progression and opportunities. This makes Tesco an ideal starting point for a great career, especially if you consider the scale and breadth of the national community programmes it runs. 4 Last year alone, with many families facing hardship due to the pandemic, the retailer put together a £30million package of support for communities in the UK. It donated £15million worth of food and funds for distribution through partners The Trussell Trust and FareShare, in addition to ongoing monthly donations of 2.5 million meals a month from surplus food. Plus, it supported more than 10,000 local community groups with £8million worth of grants through its Community Grants Scheme (formerly Bags of Help) programme, and donated £2million to the British Red Cross to help them support people in need during the pandemic. Serving local communities is part of the supermarket’s DNA. It is at the very heart of Tesco’s own story, which began with a market stall in...
THE PREMIER LEAGUE will continue their rule of only allowing fans into matches if they are vaccinated or can show proof of a negative Covid test, according to reports. The condition for entry into stadia has been in place since the beginning of the season. 1Many Premier League fans around the country have abided by the Covid protocols in place The government has announced that vaccine passports will no longer be required for mass events but the Premier League are refusing to drop their standards. The Premier League is determined to ensure fan safety at each of their fixtures while ensuring full capacity crowds remain for the entire season. As such, they plan to have a vaccine passport system in place by the beginning of October, according to the Daily Mail. And as part of the Premier League's plans to reduce the risk of Covid transmission, it will increase the number of spot-checks at stadiums, to ensure fans in attendance are double-jabbed or have tested negative. Those who fail to meet the requirements could be barred from entry. In addition,...
Hundreds of emergency responders were in place in Louisiana and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers had power restoration experts and generators at the ready as Hurricane Ida hit on Sunday as one of the most powerful hurricanes to make landfall in the U.S., federal officials said. The Coast Guard prepositioned vessels for “deep water search and rescue efforts,” the White House said. States also had sent teams to help with ground and water rescue. “We’re as ready as we can be,” Gov. John Bel Edwards told CNN’s “State of the Union” a few hours before Ida’s predicted landfall. He said there were 600 people ready to deploy for search and rescue efforts, including teams from 15 other states, with “many more” on the way. Much of the response began days before landfall and included special precautions due to the coronavirus pandemic, the White House said. On Saturday, President Joe Biden met via videoconference with FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell, who said more than 100 ground ambulances and 20 air ambulances were deployed to help evacuate nursing...
Getty Dan Campbell coaching during a game. The Detroit Lions have been a sleeping giant in the NFL world for most of their existence, but the team’s new boss Dan Campbell is aiming to change that fact in a big way moving forward. Campbell has come to Detroit with a hands-on approach toward trying to change the culture, and a big part of that for the coach seems to be embracing where he has landed fully. The latest Lions news straight to your inbox! Join the Heavy on Lions newsletter here! Join Heavy on Lions! During an interview with Brad Galli of WXYZ-TV, Campbell was asked to explain how he is going about trying to change a culture that has suffered for a while. A non-binary track athlete told MSNBC host Alicia Menendez that track and field can be a "very gendered place." On Saturday’s episode of American Voices, Menendez spoke with track athlete Nikki Hiltz who recently competed against women in the Olympic trials.  Despite Hiltz not qualifying for the American team, Menendez highlighted this year’s Olympics as "making history" with transgender athletes competing for the first time. However, she also noted Hiltz’s recent statement feeling no longer "safe" in Arkansas due to bills Menendez claimed would affect trans athletes "to live their day-to-day lives."  DOJ ASSERTS WEST VIRGINIA, ARKANSAS LAWS LIMITING TRANSGENDER RIGHTS ARE UNCONSTITUTIONAL "Yeah. It's crazy. You know, I spent three years in Arkansas and I think, you know, I just don't feel safe there anymore," Hiltz said. "Just because of these bills and you know, the way that they're passing through. I think it's really going to limit a lot of people, especially trans people, and you know, yeah, it's just heartbreaking. And you know, that's why I'm so determined to keep showing up as myself and, you know,...
President Joe Biden praised failed Georgia Democrat governor candidate Stacey Abrams on Thursday during a drive-in rally in Duluth, Georgia. “Stacy Abrams can be anything she wants to be, from whatever she chooses, to president,” Biden said as he introduced Abrams and a handful of Georgia Democrats. “I want to thank you, Stacey, for empowering the people to vote and to make their voices heard, you’ve been amazing,” Biden continued. Abrams was once floated by Biden’s team as a possible running mate, but she publicly turned him down. “I think you don’t run for second place,” she said on ABC’s “The View,” in March of 2019: .@staceyabrams on rumors former Vice President Joe Biden was considering her as vice president on his ticket: "I think you dont run for second place." Johnny Manziel thinks social media has some serious downsides. The Texas A&M Heisman winner is no stranger at all to social media, and during his downfall, he was constantly all over it. Now, he wants people to know that it’s not always a great place. (RELATED: David Hookstead Is The True King In The North When It Comes To College Football) He said the following on the latest episode of the “Ball Don’t Lie” podcast: It takes a very special person to not be affected by social media in 2020. I think just watching the way things are going in life and in the world right now, you know, social media is almost a dangerous place at times. You can use it in the right way or you can very easily use it in the wrong way. I think for awhile I just tried to stay off of it as much as I can. You can listen to his full comments in the video below. It’s hard to disagree with a single word Manziel said in the video above. Is there anyone on the planet...

The Guardian As the White House changes hands, so will Fox News’ support of the presidency After four years of slavishly promoting the president and White House, rightwing media will turn an abrupt about-faceWhen Joe Biden is sworn in as president on 20 January, cable news viewers may witness one of the most dramatic 180-degree turns in history. After four years of slavishly promoting the president, Fox News is expected to pump on the brakes within seconds of the inauguration ceremony. All of a sudden, the person in the White House is not a Republican. More than that, the network can no longer rely on the willingness of the president or his aides to call into Fox News any time of the day or night. The rightwing TV channel, and its big name hosts Tucker Carlson and Sean Hannity, will spend the next four years as the party of the opposition. The network has done this before, of course – the eight years of Barack Obama’s presidency weren’t that long ago – but Biden presents a different challenge.“Of course we can expect it...
During an interview aired on Thursday’s broadcast of CBS’ “Late Show,” President-Elect Joe Biden stated that we are “going to get to the place we can open schools.” And by this time next year, “we’ll be awfully close to” back to normal “if not there.” Host Stephen Colbert asked, “Do you think this time next year, when you’re both in the White House, we will have what you could call a normal Christmas? Will the country be back to normal?” Biden responded, “I believe we’ll be awfully close to that, if not there. I do believe that. I think we’ll be able to have — because the combination, in the first 100 days, I’m going to ask everybody to wear a mask for 100 days, and where I can dictate that, on federal property, I’ve been on with 45 governors asking them to think about it, just 100 days. We’re going to get those — the 100 million vaccinations out there, and we’re going to get to the place we can open schools. And there’s things we can do, and...

NEW YORK (AP) — The coronavirus has led more people to spend time outdoors, and many find themselves walking the same paths and gazing at the same trees or shrubs day after day. Author and self-taught landscape photographer Larry Lederman suggests looking at your surroundings anew by turning a camera on them. Fall and winter, he says, are the perfect time to take up landscape photography. There’s the gorgeous fall foliage but also the beauty of the bare trees and their shapes. Lederman says to start photographing now and then watch the year-round transformation of the landscape. His new book, “Garden Portraits: Experiences of Natural Beauty” (The Monacelli Press), examines 16 East Coast gardens throughout the seasons, offering inspiration for novice landscape photographers. “There’s something to be said for shifting one’s focus toward landscapes, particularly trees, many of which are at their most beautiful in the fall,” says Gregory Long, who was president of the New York Botanical Garden for more than 25 years and wrote the book’s foreword. That shift in autumn is “liberating,”...
Even as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to affect countries around the globe, researchers are hard at work trying to understand what happened and how such tragedies can either be prevented or mitigated in the future. Prominent among these efforts is a new spreadsheet developed by the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), where a team is attempting to track what are described as "ARS-CoV-2 Superspreading Events from Around the World" — and Colorado appears all too often on it. The document (accessible on Google Drive by clicking here), currently includes 137 superspread events in this state out of a total 1,521. As noted by Florida's Poynter Institute, which is touting the spreadsheet, the database provides information and brief descriptions about each event's location and whether it took place inside or outside, as well as geographic coordinates for mapping purposes. A wide range of countries is included, from Argentina and Australia to Singapore and Vietnam.Related Stories Hancock: Rising COVID-19 Numbers Put Crackdowns, Shutdown on Table COVID-19 Update: Inside Colorado's Third Wave COVID-19: Polis on Why He's Extending Statewide Mask Order...
Barbara Jo Kammer finds therapy in music, and in better times, she and her band, The Hippie Buckaroos, can often be found playing to the residents of senior homes in and around Boulder County. Of course, COVID-19 has made that next to impossible. The Lafayette resident didn't want to let a global pandemic stop her from helping others. She's taken her act solo and plays just outside the window for elders, many of whom are stuck inside and in need of a distraction. "I've been working with elders as a music therapist since I graduated from Naropa in 2000," Kammer says. "It's been a wonderful experience for the elders, for the staff and for us especially." The past few weeks have even made playing outside a bit of a challenge because the smoke from nearby fires and those in California have forced many senior homes to close their windows. The 46-year-old Black man died after a white police officer knelt on his neck for eight minutes and 46 seconds as Floyd lay on the payment in Minneapolis. The outrage over the deaths sparked global protest about racial inequality and police brutality, and it pushed forward a renewed agenda to fight racism.  The scope of the fight crossed barriers from healthcare to education to media. Black news anchors and reporters across the country are reporting the facts of each story of racial injustice objectively, while also fighting their own racial inequality battles.
