If we were confronted in our gardens by a 6ft 4in airman armed with a pistol, most of us would be tempted to turn and run. But when farmer's wife Evelyn Cardwell spotted a German who was parachuting onto her land after his Junkers 88 was shot down by the crew of a Hurricane in the Second World War, she marched towards him and told him to put his hands up. The story of the woman's incredible bravery in July 1940, which saw her rewarded with an MBE by King George VI, is recounted in book Faces of the Home Front 1939-1945, by historians Neil Storey and Fiona Kay.  With her husband away, Mrs Cardwell, 45, who was only 5ft 8in, had at first tried to call the authorities when she saw the German soldier in the sky above her home in the village of Aldborough, in the East Riding of Yorkshire, but then discovered the phone did not work. Instead, she told one of her farmhands to go on his bicycle and alert the police, whilst she plucked up...

Sir Paul McCartney has set the record straight on the Beatles' split in 1970, insisting: 'I didn't instigate the split.' Speaking in an upcoming episode of BBC Radio 4's new interview series This Cultural Life, McCartney, 79, said: 'John walked into a room one day and said 'I am leaving the Beatles''.' He added: 'This was my band, this was my job, this was my life, so I wanted it to continue,' The Guardian reports. Candid: Paul McCartney, 79, has set the record straight on the Beatles' split in 1970, insisting: 'I didn't instigate the split' It has often been heavily implied that Paul instigated the band's break-up, with The Mirror reporting on the split in 1970 with the headline: 'Paul Quits The Beatles.' Keen to set the record straight, Paul insisted in his new interview that other band members (Ringo Starr and George Harrison) wanted the Beatles to continue, going as far as to say that if Lennon had not quit at the age of 29, the iconic group's journey 'could have been much longer'. The first-place San Francisco Giants (106-55) lost to San Diego earlier Saturday, reducing their lead to one game. The Dodgers (105-56) must beat the Brewers on Sunday and hope the Giants lose again to tie for the title, which LA has won the last eight years. That would send them and Giants to a deciding Game 163 in San Francisco on Monday. EVEN genius script writer Jed Mercurio would not have come up with a plot like this for Line of Duty. No one would have believed it. When 20-year-old call girl Lynette White was killed by a knife-wielding sadist on Valentine’s Day in a flat above a bookmaker’s shop, police quickly had a prime suspect. 11Lynette White was stabbed to death on Valentine's Day by a sadistic killerCredit: PA A white man, distressed and in tears, his hands bleeding, was seen by four witnesses outside the building in the racial melting pot of Tiger Bay in Cardiff docks. All the evidence pointed to the killer being a disgruntled punter.  Police even produced a photofit on TV’s Crimewatch programme of a white man with greasy dark brown hair they were looking for. But ten months after the murder – with no evidence whatsoever to back it up - South Wales detectives arrested five black men instead. They accused Lynette’s boyfriend Stephen Miller and four others living in the docks of getting together to stab her 50 times, in a ritual killing.    Most...

President Biden fell three times when attempting to board Air Force One on Friday, conjuring up memories of the mainstream media hyperventilating over former President Donald Trump cautiously walking down a ramp last year. Reporters and pundits sounded the alarm about Trump’s well-being for what they believed were signs of declining health during his appearance at a West Point commencement ceremony in June, when Trump was seen cautiously walking down a ramp from the stage. REPORTERS SPECULATE ABOUT TRUMP'S HEALTH AFTER HIS SLOW WALK DOWN RAMP AT WEST POINT COMMENCEMENT A clip of Trump’s cautious walk shared on Twitter by left-wing journalist Aaron Rapar accumulated over 13.1 million views. The footage essentially dominated an entire news cycle and liberal pundits even used it as the impetus to question if something was wrong with Trump neurologically. It remains to be seen if 78-year-old Biden’s triple fall will receive a fraction of the attention Trump received for walking gingerly. "Honestly no one would care that much about an old man tripping but the NYT, CNN and others went all in on speculative coverage about...
WASHINGTON -- In a highly unusual breach of security last month at the air base that operates the Air Force One presidential aircraft, an apparently aimless intruder went undetected for several hours and walked on and off an airplane on the flight line before his quirky headgear gave him away.He was wearing what an Air Force investigative report released Thursday described as "a bright red or pink cap that partially covered his ears and had distinctive balls on top that looked a little like mouse ears."An airman in the operations office at Joint Base Andrews, located in Maryland just outside Washington, saw the man on the flight line and became suspicious, partly because of the headgear, and called security. Officials said he never got close to Air Force One."To be frank, I'm just being honest, we had no idea we had an unauthorized civilian on the base. He could have roamed around for a lot longer had it not been for that particular airman that figured out he doesn't quite fit," said Sami Said, the Air Force inspector general who...

"He walked up the wall, flipped over ... and stood there." And if that's not strange enough, another eyewitness description proclaimed that a little boy from Indiana "glided backward on the floor, wall and ceiling." I remember reading those words in a strange state of shock and wonder. How in the world did a little boy allegedly walk up a wall? I wondered. And why was a mainstream outlet like the Indianapolis Star covering such a bizarre story? I had a slew of immediate questions about the 2014 story that had come out of Gary, Indiana, about a so-called demon house that was filled with terrifying tales, but the claim about a little boy walking up a wall was the hands-down, most offbeat detail amid the plethora of strange phenomena surrounding Latoya Ammons and her family. It's just one of the compelling stories I tell in my new book, "Playing With Fire: A Modern Investigation Into Demons, Exorcisms and Ghosts."
