Comedian Jon Stewart branded the United States Supreme Court the 'Fox News of Justice' after it overturned Roe v. Wade.  Stewart, 59, opened Thursday's episode of The Problem with Jon Stewart, with an angry exclamation: 'Guys, what the f**k!'  He asked three law professors - Leah Litman, Melissa Murray, and Kate Shaw - if they immediately went into 'solution mode' after hearing about the dramatic political and legal shift.  Stewart then compared SCOTUS to the conservative new network - which has been accused by the left of being high partisan and spreading fake news.  He said: '[This decision] makes the court a cynical pursuit. It feels like the Fox News of Justice.' 'It is a cynical pursuit in the same way that Fox News would come out with 'we're fair and balanced' under the patina of what would be a high-status pursuit to the betterment of society, journalism. They are a cynical political arm.'  Read more: www.washingtonpo...
A urologist detailed the spike in interest for vasectomies following the Supreme Court decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization, but he also issued a warning to those considering the procedure. “It should be viewed as a permanent form of sterilization," Dr. Christian Hettinger, a urologist at Kansas City Urology Care, told a local outlet. "It’s not something that’s a good temporary fix, if you will.” BETTE MIDLER SAYS IT'S 'TIME TO BAN VIAGRA' BECAUSE IT'S 'GOD'S WILL' “It’s not something I would plan to have done and then reversed in the future,” he warned. "We’re up 900% in people looking to get a vasectomy" since the Supreme Court decision was announced, Hettinger added. “Typically, it’s about three phone calls over a weekend," he said of the pre-Dobbs norm. However, "it was 50 calls looking for vasectomies" the weekend of the decision. In Texas, the phones at Austin Urology Institute are similarly ringing more often. Dr. Koushik Shaw, the institute's founder, said, "On Friday, we might see typically about 200 phone calls,...

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky has often bragged about singlehandedly blocking consideration of Obama Supreme Court pick Merrick Garland as the "single biggest decision" he’s ever made in his political career. McConnell's handiwork in stealing that seat, along with jamming through a replacement for liberal Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg just eight days before the 2020 election, has also indefinitely sullied the once-esteemed body in the court of public opinion. After issuing a string of radical right-wing decisions, including the gutting of abortion rights, Americans have come to see the court's extremist majority as little more than a group of right-wing partisan hacks in black robes. Multiple polls have now found public approval of the Supreme Court reaching historic lows and being underwater by double digits in some cases. Reuters Ipsos: 43% favorable, 57% unfavorable (-14)—before the opinion dropped, the court was 4 points above water in early June, 52% - 48%. Navigator Research: 44% favorable, 47% unfavorable—the first time ever the high court has been underwater in the progressive consortium's polling, and a 23-point fall since February. Gallup: Just...
(CNN)Family members of Emmett Till, the Black 14-year-old whose murder in the Jim Crow South spurred the civil rights movement in America, say they have unearthed an unserved arrest warrant for the White woman who accused him of making advances toward her, sparking the events that led to his death nearly 70 years ago. "I cried. We cried. We hugged," Deborah Watts, Till's cousin, told CNN of the moment she said members of the Emmett Till Legacy Foundation found the warrant in a dusty, dank box in a county courthouse in Greenwood, Mississippi. "Unbelievable. We held each other. Justice has to be served." The warrant was discovered last week by a five-member search group led by members of Till's family, including Deborah Watts and her daughter Terri. An image of the warrant, provided to CNN by the foundation, charged J.W. Milam, Roy Bryant and Bryant's then-wife -- identified in the document as Mrs. Roy Bryant -- with kidnapping and orders their arrests. Russia has announced it is leaving Snake Island just days after Ukraine launched a major rocket attack on the outpost. The 100-acre hunk of land is a favourable strategic position, sitting some 80 miles off Ukraine's southern coastline in the Black Sea. Russia seized the island early in the war and had largely managed to maintain control of it despite intermittent attacks from Ukraine's armed forces. But Ukraine last week launched a major offensive, destroying a series of Russian supply stations and anti-aircraft systems with a brutal barrage of rockets. The withdrawal represents a major loss for Putin's forces. The head of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's office, Andriy Yermak, published a jubilant message upon learning the news this morning. 'KABOOM! No Russian troops on the Snake Island anymore. Our Armed Forces did a great job,' Yermak wrote on Twitter. Russia's defence ministry confirmed its forces had withdrawn from the strategic outpost, but painted the retreat as a 'gesture of goodwill' and evidence that Russia is not interfering with the export of vital grain from Ukraine amid an escalating global food crisis. SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) — Religious leaders and others in Savannah, Georgia’s oldest city, called Wednesday for the police chief’s resignation and a federal investigation into local officer-involved shootings, including one last week that left a Black man dead. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said it is independently investigating Friday’s fatal shooting of a man who officers spotted walking around midday in the middle of a street. The man, Saudi Arai Lee, 31, of Savannah, lived in the neighborhood where the shooting occurred. “Family after family are crying because of sons or their daughters shot down by this police department and it must stop,” Elder James Johnson, founder of the activist group Racial Justice Network, said at a news conference Wednesday. “I don’t know if it’s the training or a fear of a Black man, but seems like they shoot and ask questions later, and we cannot and will not tolerate this,” he said. Officers approached Lee to speak with him, the GBI said. The agency said Lee immediately showed them his wallet, saying it contained his weapons permit, and then...
Rep. Liz Cheney on Wednesday renewed her public call for former White House counsel Pat Cipollone to testify before the January 6 committee in the wake of explosive testimony from former senior Trump administration aide Cassidy Hutchinson. Cipollone warned her that the administration would be 'charged with every crime imaginable' if officials went along with Donald Trump's alleged plan to overturn the election on January 6. Cheney, the committee's vice chair, argued that Hutchinson's testimony and other accounts of Cipollone showing concern about the plot are compelling enough reason for him to testify.  'As we heard yesterday, WH counsel Pat Cippollone (sp) had significant concerns re. Trump’s Jan 6 activities,' the Wyoming Republican lawmaker wrote on Twitter. 'It’s time for Mr. Cippollone (sp) to testify on the record.' She added that 'any concerns he has about the institutional interests of his prior office are outweighed by the need for his testimony.' Hutchinson, the 25-year-old former assistant to Donald Trump's Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, spent roughly two hours on Tuesday telling the committee and Americans across the country her firsthand...

“Cassidy Hutchinson, a top aide to Trump’s White House chief of staff Mark Meadows, provided compelling testimony Tuesday that former president Donald Trump is singularly culpable for the Capitol riot.” That’s the assessment of the prominent legal analyst who serves as a Fox News contributor. In a stunning National Review column published late Tuesday, former federal prosecutor Andy McCarthy spelled out why Hutchinson’s testimony was such bad news for Trump — particularly from a legal standpoint. “The testimony in a session of the House January 6 committee — a session abruptly called, reportedly due to concerns about Ms. Hutchinson’s safety — was devastating because it was directly about the former president,” McCarthy wrote. “The day’s lone witness pulled back the curtain that countless advisers and aides kept around the mercurial Trump for four years.” McCarthy did include the caveats that there are Hutchinson did not face cross-examination, and also there are “significant questions about aspects of her account, particularly where it involved hearsay.” Yet McCarthy compared the Jan. 6 Committee to a grand jury, not a trial jury, and...
Calls for the House January 6th committee to subpoena Virginia Thomas, the wife of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, have been ramping up after her lawyer told the panel she would not testify at the hearings. The committee has asked Thomas to voluntary testify about her role in the illegal plot to overturn the 2020 election after it emerged the conservative activist pushed election fraud conspiracy theories in dozens of text messages with ex-White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows in the run-up and day of the insurrection at the Capitol. But her lawyer, Mark Paoletta, responded to the committee by insisting there was not a 'sufficient basis' for Thomas to testify, according to a letter obtained by the New York Times.  Thomas repeatedly texted with Meadows and urged him to press on with Trump's election overturn effort. This included a Nov. 10th text where she called Joe Biden's election win 'the greatest Heist of our History.' Along with emailing Arizona officials, Thomas, who attended a rally Trump held just before the Capitol riot, also had written emails to John Eastman, the...
New York City Mayor Eric Adams slammed former mayor Rudy Giuliani for 'using police to carry out [his] agenda' after he had a Staten Island supermarket worker arrested for assault, citing video that he says seems to undermine the former city leader's account of the incident. 'I looked at the video,' Adams said Tuesday. 'I would like to remind former mayor Giuliani that falsely reporting a crime is a crime.'  Adams said not only should Giuliani be investigated for filing a false police report over the alleged assault, but that he's also asked Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell to look into the arrest of ShopRite worker Daniel Gill, 39.  Gill can a be seen on security video patting Giuliani on the back during a campaign stop for Andrew Giuliani, who is running for New York State governor.  He then reportedly says to the former mayor: 'What's up, scumbag?' (Photo by Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images) In a new statement by Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), the Speaker of the House outlined her legislative response to the Supreme Court decision on Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, going as far to suggest eliminating the filibuster. Pelosi released this statement on Monday, three days after the Supreme Court announced the 5-4 ruling, overturning the landmark Roe v. Wade case that had been standing as precedent for nearly fifty years. The Speaker of the House wrote that the decision displayed “the Supreme Court’s disrespect for a woman’s freedom over her reproductive health.” Pelosi highlighted that House Democrats have been anticipating this ruling “preparing for the possibility of this tragic outcome,” she said continuing “Our Caucus has been exploring avenues to protect the health and freedom of American women.” The Speaker then listed bullet points outlining the goals of the legislation to be introduced. She specifically highlighted protecting “personal data stored in reproductive health apps,” clarifying that “Americans have the Constitutional right to travel freely,” across the country, and passing the Women’s Health Protection Act,...
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez criticized fellow Democrats over the weekend for simply telling Americans to 'go vote' in November's midterm elections in response to the national outcry over the Supreme Court overturning federal abortion protections. The New York progressive also took aim at her party's leaders for sending out campaign fundraisers soon after the ruling was issued on Friday. 'In a legitimacy crisis, the solution Biden + Dem leaders must offer can’t just be one of voting, but of statute & authority,' Ocasio-Cortez wrote on Twitter Saturday. She pointed out recent polls that show the majority of Americans view the high court as partisan or illegitimate. A CBS News poll released on Sunday shows 52 percent of Americans view overturning Roe v. Wade as a 'step backwards.' 'For the moments when we DO insist on elections, we must be PRECISE with what we need and we will do with that power,' the lawmaker continued.  'How many seats does the party need to Codify Roe? Dems must SAY THAT. Not just “go vote” or “give us $6 to win.” That is demoralizing,...

A British former Nato chief said last night there will 'never be peace in Europe' while Vladimir Putin remains in charge of Russia and called for 'massive rearmament' in the West.  Speaking at the Chalke Valley History Festival, which is sponsored by the Daily Mail, General Sir Richard Shirreff said Western armed forces – including those of Britain – had been 'cut to ribbons' as a result of 'successive complacent thinking' in the past 15 years. General Sir Richard, who was the deputy supreme commander of Nato when Russia annexed Ukraine's Crimea region in 2014, likened the current situation to the months leading up to the Second World War and said Western nations have to push for the 'defeat of Putinism' and the 'defeat of the Putin regime'. Former President Donald Trump renewed his attacks on his former vice president on Friday, dismissing Mike Pence as a 'human conveyor belt' for failing to reject what he said were fraudulent votes in the 2020 election. It came at the end of a week that revealed more evidence of the way he and his allies tried and failed to persuade Pence to overturn the result.   The House January 6 committee released testimony of a White House official saying that Trump called Pence a 'wimp.' Trump tore into the hearings as a 'show trial' in his most sustained attack on the committee since it began its investigation into the attack on the U.S. Capitol.  'I don't even know who these people are. But I never called Mike Pence a wimp,' he told a gathering of religious conservatives in Nashville, Tennessee. 'I never called him a wimp. Mike Pence had a chance to be great. 'He had a chance to be frankly historic. 'But just like Bill Barr and the rest of these weak people, Mike - and I say it sadly...

Getty New Bears WR Byron Pringle didn't seem too happy about questions he was asked by the media at minicamp. Byron Pringle doesn’t want to focus or dwell on the past. The top free agent at wide receiver for the Chicago Bears this offseason, Pringle spoke with the media on June 14 at mandatory veteran minicamp and was asked about an incident in April in which he was arrested in Florida for reckless driving and driving with a suspended license. According to the Florida Highway Patrol arrest report, Pringle was doing donuts in his vehicle on a public road with a child in the back seat and an adult male in the front passenger seat. The arrest report also stated Pringle “became verbally confrontational” and “ignored” the “verbal commands” of the officer who initially pulled him over. When Pringle was asked about the incident for the first time at minicamp, it was clear during the press conference — and after it — that he didn’t want to discuss it. Former Detroit Tigers reliever Joel Zumaya has been vocal about the team’s 2022 struggles. He didn’t hold back after Wednesday’s effort. A.J. Hinch and Co. held a team meeting after a 13-0 loss to the White Sox on Wednesday afternoon — a game in which three position players pitched. It was as embarrassing as they come, and Hinch questioned the team’s effort both in the clubhouse and publicly. Something has to change, and fast, or else this season will truly get away from them. Zumaya was a member of the mid-2000’s Tigers teams which made it to the World Series under manager Jim Leyland. Speaking from experience, Zumaya claimed those Tigers faced a similar predicament, but Leyland demanded more. Large oil companies took in over $22 billion in profits in the first quarter of 2022 as gas prices have soared. President Joe Biden sent a letter on Tuesday to executives at seven of the largest oil refining companies in the country, calling on them to increase production capacity as Americans face high fuel costs and the companies reap massive profits. The letter reads in part: Vladimir Putin's war of aggression, and the bipartisan and global effort to counter it, has disrupted the global supply of oil and driven up the global price. But the sharp rise in gasoline prices is not driven only by rising oil prices, but by an unprecedented disconnect between the price of oil and the price of gas. ... That difference -- of more than 15% at the pump -- is the result of the historically high profit margins for refining oil into gasoline, diesel and other refined products. Since the beginning of the year, refiners' margins for refining gasoline and diesel have tripled, and are currently at their highest levels ever recorded.   [...]...

Idaho police have been bombarded with death threats from callers as far away as Norway after arresting 31 masked members of a 'white supremacist' hate group on their way to riot at a pride event.  The arrests were made Saturday after a concerned resident called 911 to warn about masked men who 'looked like a little army' climbing into a truck and seemingly headed to the LGBTQ event at a park in the northwestern state.  Coeur d'Alene Police Chief Lee White said half of around the 150 calls received by his department since the arrests were from anonymous people wanting to 'scream and yell at us' and 'offer death threats against myself and other members of the police department, merely for doing our jobs.'  White attributed the abusive calls to 'hate groups from outside' Coeur d'Alene, with one person phoning from Norway to 'give us their opinions.' The other half of the calls were 'supportive calls from the Coeur D'Alene community.' The arrested men - who police believe are linked to US far-right cell Patriot Front - were intercepted before...

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Rep. Mark DeSaulnier (D-CA) spoke to Raw Story about what he witnessed in the House Select Committee on Monday morning as the second of four hearings unfolded. During the hearing, top aides to former President Donald Trump said they made it clear to the president that his belief that the election was stolen was a lie. Barr made it clear under oath that Trump's ideas were false. At one point, Barr pointed out that if Trump truly believed what he was saying that he was detached from reality. Other aides said that Trump would throw out conspiracy theories and that the staff would debunk them and Trump would move on, but would still repeat those conspiracies publicly. "Unfortunately being older, I'm not naive about people's weaknesses and the perception of power," said DeSaulnier. "I mean this guy doesn't believe that the rules apply to him and he's crazy. I mean, he makes King Richard seem like a stable person." DeSaulnier went on to say Trump ignored Barr because he isn't "a stable human being. I mean, you're...

Shake Shack is facing calls to join boycotts of Martin's Potato Rolls, after it was reported that the famous bread-making family made donations to the conspiracy theorist and republican nominee for Pennsylvania governor, Doug Mastriano. James Martin, the current executive chair and former president of Martin's Famous Pastry Shoppe, donated $110,000 to Mastriano's gubernatorial campaign, according to an April report in Spotlight PA. Since then it was revealed that Martin's wife and daughter also contributed to the campaign.  Mastriano is a Trump-backed senator who has been vocal about promoting the claims that Trump won the 2020 election, and who attended and helped organize the January 6th protest which then turned into the riot at the US Capitol.  News of Martin's political allegiance to Mastriano has led to high profile chefs and local restaurants alike boycotting the Pennsylvania bread company which has long been a mainstay in the recipes of restaurants across the world.
