While Chromebooks have been fully embraced by schools for their low cost and ease of use, it’s been an uphill battle to get other laptop users to take them seriously. A symbolic act, and not dumb at all. NY Times: “President Trump has led the largest mobilization of the public and private sectors since WWII to defeat Covid-19 and save lives,” said Brian Morgenstern, a White House spokesman. But Mr. Trump’s unwillingness to put aside his political self-centeredness as Americans died by the thousands each day or to embrace the steps necessary to deal with the crisis remain confounding even to some administration officials. “Making masks a culture war issue was the dumbest thing imaginable,” one former senior adviser said. xBREAKING: David Purdue is quarantining after exposure to COVID-19.— Brian Tyler Cohen (@briantylercohen) December 31, 2020 Axios: McConnell calls Jan. 6 certification his "most consequential vote" Between the lines: Many Republican senators are furious at Hawley for forcing them to take what Trump is setting up as the ultimate loyalty test on January 6th. The UFC as a promotion has been around for over two decades. What started out as a no-holds-barred exhibition between fighters has turned into a multi-billion dollar business.  The Fertitta brothers and Dana White have been responsible for establishing the UFC as a prominent figure in MMA. After buying over the company from the original owners, White and the Fertitta brothers had a gargantuan task ahead of them. They had to legalize the sport in different states and change the public perception of MMA among other challenges.  However, the UFC was one of, if not the first promotion in MMA. The first movers’ advantage has played a big role in the UFC, establishing itself as the premier organization for MMA.  However, as with every area of business, in a free-market, competition is inevitable. Therefore, it is no surprise that Dana White and his team have their fair share of competition....

“We have this mantra on my show: Increase the amount of useful information in the world,” Rachel Maddow said of her MSNBC show, which has flourished as must-watch programming for liberals in the Trump era, in our exclusive interview. But the program has a different formula than most of what you see on cable: “That means don’t book liars, don’t show fighting for the sake of fighting.” The Rachel Maddow Show, which airs at 9 p.m. on MSNBC, averaged more than three million viewers a night in 2020, as her prodigiously loyal audience tuned in for her nightly take on the 2020 race and the subsequent chaos of the election. Maddow’s success comes at a time of uncertainty for the cable news industry. President Donald Trump has dominated the news for the last five years, fueling a ratings boom for cable news networks suddenly thrust at the center of...

Google has been accused of secretly giving Facebook advertising data perks and engaging in a deal with the social media giant to manipulate sales to consolidate their market power illegally, a new antitrust lawsuit alleges.  Texas and nine other states filed the lawsuit against Google late Wednesday, accusing the search giant of using its 'monopolistic power' to control pricing of online advertisements, fixing the market in its favor and eliminating competition. The lawsuit, which brands Google as an 'internet Goliath' and was announced by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, targets the heart of the search giant's business - the digital ads that generate nearly all of its revenue.  It was prompted by complaints by publishers and other businesses whose publications rely on advertising revenue to survive. In the lawsuit, Google is accused of striking up an illegal deal with Facebook, a major competitor for online ad sales, to manipulate advertising auction. ...

Still from "The Mandalorian" series on Disney's streaming service Disney+.Disney My parting thought from Disney's four-hour investor day Thursday, dedicated to its massive streaming video aspirations, was "strategy bomb." It was a Disney show of force. Keeping people in front of screens for four hours to watch an investor day is absurd. The event had multiple intermissions! But as Disney rolled out show after show for Disney+ — methodically ticking off Marvel character after Marvel character, "Star Wars" spinoff after spinoff, Pixar movie after Pixar movie (The Verge did you a favor and culled the list of announcements to the most important 52) — I couldn't help but think about how Disney is playing the streaming video game at an entirely different level than its competition. For pretty much every other company in the streaming wars, the goal is to acquire the most popular content to entice paying month subscribers....

If anybody would want to see the demise of Fox News, one would think it would be Don Lemon — the CNN Tonight anchor whose work is heavily criticized by Fox’s opinion hosts. (A search of the media monitoring service TVEyes reveals that Lemon has been invoked nearly once per day on Fox News over the past two months — seldom in a favorable light, to say the least.) And yet, when presented with an opportunity to forecast Fox’s demise, Lemon declined — stating that the network will shrug off a rival which has gotten a lot of industry attention of late. Speaking with Chris Cuomo during the handoff between their shows on Tuesday night, Lemon predicted that order will be restored to the broadcast world by March. And conservative upstart Newsmax will prove to be no threat to Fox’s longtime ratings supremacy, but rather, a flash in the...

CityofTampaFL/Facebook Catching a buzz at The Hub is a surefire way to drum up some emotion, but Kamran Mir, a longtime Tampa bartender who just celebrated his two-year anniversary behind the bar at the downtown dive, took it to another level Tuesday night during Tampa Mayor Jane Castor’s new “Crafting Tampa's Cocktail” competition. Held just a short walk away from The Hub at Winter Village at Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park, the competition was a search for Tampa’s signature cocktail, and Mir turned up the feels for his entry, which he called “6 a.m. on 7th Ave.” as an homage to the Ybor City historic district. Served in styrofoam coffee cups you might get when you order a coffee with your Obama Cuban at the West Tampa Sandwich shop, the cocktail was a tribute to the city’s immigrants. “This is inspired by the café con leche because when I think of...
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — High school athletes will have to wait until at least the new year to compete because the California Interscholastic Federation will keep all practices and competition start dates on hold due to the continued surge of COVID-19 cases. The CIF, which oversees high school sports in California, says it has been waiting on the state’s Department of Public Health to issue guidance on when schools can return to full practice and competition. On Tuesday, CIF said they did not expect to hear from public health officials until after Jan. 1, 2021. “The CIF is confident this decision is a necessary and reasonable action for our member schools, student-athletes, and school communities in light of the current statewide crisis,” a statement said. CIF officials say they will remove all regional and state championship events from the Season 1 sports calendar. The move will allow more student-athletes to...

Rumors quickly went into overdrive when the opera singer posted a cryptic message to his social media accounts in which he claimed that he did not leave by choice and that “details are still to come.” However, according to Entertainment Tonight, the reason for Gallagher’s dismissal was purely a legal one: he violated the terms of the show’s contract regarding COVID-19 protocols. No further details were given about how or when the infraction took place. Unlike the sports championships with physical demands, whose segregation by sex may be justified by the anatomical and hormonal differences between men and women, the existence of chess championships for men and women is not supported by any kind of evidence scientific, although it is very old. The popular Netflix series Lady’s Gambit features a young American woman who becomes a world star by beating the world champion. A fiction license, right? History of women in chess Chess experienced an explosive growth in interest during the 20th century, when professional and state-sponsored players began competing for the officially recognized title of world champion; as well as the increasingly lucrative cash prizes. But chess has not traditionally been a competition in which equality of the sexes prevails. According to the Encyclopedia Britannica, the separation of men and women dates back to approximately 1500 with the...

Black Friday Pornhub deals are nothing new. In fact, every year I have the opportunity to craft an incredibly crass headline announcing some ludicrous porn discounts. But, this year? There is going to be no topping this year (pun intended). 2020’s Black Friday Pornhub deal For a limited time, Pornhub premium subscribers can score the ultimate savings of a lifetime. And I mean that quite literally. Starting at midnight (so 12 a.m. ET or 9 p.m. PT) tonight through Cyber Monday, Pornhub is unloading a limited amount of $200 lifetime memberships to its premium service. It’s on a first come first serve basis, though. So if you wait until Friday, you’ll likely end up paying a smidge more. With the media acting as if a positive test for the coronavirus is a death sentence, it is interesting to note the many sports stars who have gone on to become champions after testing positive. Journalist Jordan Schachtel recently posted a series of tweets showing that a positive coronavirus test is not the end of everything. In fact, there has already been a bevy of athletes who have gone on to achieve personal bests after getting over a positive test for the virus. For instance, PGA star Dustin Johnson tested positive for the virus early in October. By November, he was winning a green jacket at the 2020 Masters tournament. Schachtel then noted that Atlanta Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman was hit with a positive test result in July. By November he was named the National League’s Most Valuable Player for 2020. Shut.
