LONDON (AP) — The U.K.’s competition watchdog launched a formal investigation on Thursday into Facebook’s purchase of Giphy over concerns it will stifle competition for animated images. The Competition and Markets Authority said the investigation’s first stage has a deadline of March 25 to decide whether to trigger a more in-depth probe. The watchdog started examining the deal last year, shortly after Facebook announced its plan to acquire Giphy in a deal reportedly worth $400 million. Giphy’s library of short looping videos, or GIFs, is a popular tool for internet users sending messages or posting on social media. “We will continue to fully cooperate with the CMA’s investigation,” Facebook said in a statement. “This merger is pro-competitive and in the interests of everyone in the U.K. who uses GIPHY and our services.” Facebook had planned to integrate Giphy’s operations with Instagram but the authority last year ordered the companies to...
Washington — Justice Stephen Breyer's future on the Supreme Court has become the subject of whispers in Washington, now that Democrats control the White House and Congress, and the window for President Joe Biden to appoint a successor could be narrow, given the Senate's razor-thin majority. At 82 years old, Breyer is the most senior member of the court's three-member liberal bloc, having served on the Supreme Court for more than 25 years. While Breyer remains active during oral arguments, questions have arisen as to whether he should step down from the Supreme Court to allow Mr. Biden to fill his seat with a successor who could serve for decades. "Ultimately, the decision of whether or not to retire will be up to Justice Breyer. Who am I to say?" Chris Kang, chief counsel of the progressive group Demand Justice, told CBS News. "But I do think that as Justice...

Marcel Crolio, head of the Union of Producers of Farmers (UPA), believes that Quebecs will behave like the French if a foreigner tries to capture the metro. “If an American company wants to get its hands on a metro in Quebec, there will be similar government reactions because it will be the last banner of Quebec ownership,” he said. The office supply chain said it would be open to combining its retail and e-commerce business with Staples, which would leave essentially one national office supply chain. Office Depot said its proposal would have a greater chance of gaining regulatory approval than Staples’ idea of buying Office Depot for $40 a share, combining retail operations, and then selling Office Depot’s business-to-business division to a third party. Office Depot generates about half its sales from its business-to-business segment. The argument is that combining retail...
I picked up a new MacBook Air with Apple’s M1 chip, and I’ve absolutely loved it so far. It’s really speedy and the battery is fantastic. But I’ve been dealing with one nagging issue. And frustratingly, the screensaver renders my laptop inoperable until I completely close the screen and reopen it. It seems I’m not the only one seeing this bug, according to this MacRumors article. Others have shared similar issues with M1-equipped MacBook Airs, Pros, and Minis on MacRumors ’ forums, Reddit (in a few threads), and Apple’s support forums. And one user on MacRumors said they’ve seen the bug on their 16-inch MacBook Pro, which has an Intel chip, so perhaps this is...

Wigan Athletic’s Spanish takeover collapsed - after the bidders HALVED their offer for the club. The League One strugglers would have been RELEGATED if they accepted the new deal as it would have left unsecured creditors unpaid, meaning a 15 point penalty. Wigan's Spanish takeover bid has collapsed And the club’s administrators pulled the plug before opening talks with rival bidders to save the beleaguered outfit. It is a huge change by bidder Felipe Moreno who was originally willing to pay around £3 million for Latics. After further checks he put in a lowered offer to close to £1.5 million. The creditors are due the money, with the tax man having to be paid but the unsecured creditors left with nothing. And that is against EFL rules. Moreno, who owns Spanish side Leganes, had planned to send some fringe players over for the squad. But that also proved difficult as...

Billionaire Bernard Arnault-led LVMH made the first offer late last year, but as the luxury industry slipped into turmoil due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the company backed out from its promise to close the deal. LVMH also cited French political intervention to delay completing the acquisition until Jan. 6, pushing Tiffany into a legal battle in September to force LVMH to honor the deal. The death of illusion is a cruel, sharp sensation. There is no Santa. Mommy and Daddy are splitting up. Reality television is neither reality nor television. Time and experience are harsh teachers, and they will be administering their lessons to the Trump Republican Party for a long time to come. Some of those lessons will be politically painful and, since in politics pain is the only teacher, well overdue. The Republican Party’s wholesale moral, ideological, and political collapse is the most shocking ideological betrayal in our nation’s history. From a devotion (at least a stated devotion) to the Constitution, federalism, and limits on the power of government over its citizens, the Trump GOP has gone full authoritarian, pleading “Meine Ehre heisst Treue” to ensure Donald Trump’s continuing affection. That they believe this won’t come without political and moral consequences is beyond logic and reason, but here we are. The old...

Congressman Adam Smith (D- WA) said that President Donald Trump cares more about attempting a “fascist takeover” than about the direct payments to Americans in the covid stimulus package. MSNBC’s Kasie Hunt spoke with Smith Monday about the president throwing a wrench in stimulus negotiations before ultimately signing the omnibus bill. Trump has called for $2000 direct payments to Americans, which a number of Democrats were quick to support. Hunt said, “He had negotiators in the room talking to leadership… If this was something he felt strongly about, he had literally months to make his case.” Smith made a point of saying Trump “didn’t care” about whether the check was $600 or $2000. “He’s frustrated and he’s upset because he can’t overturn the election and, well, basically complete a fascist takeover of the United States. That’s what he’s upset about,” he added. “So he’s just throwing things around the room...

The U.S. State Department updated its travel advisory for Hong Kong, merging it with its advisory regarding China, on Thursday, warning that visitors may face arbitrary arrest and other human rights violations. The advisory issued on Thursday places Hong Kong alongside China with a Level 3 travel warning, the second-highest tier behind “do not travel.” It urges visitors to “reconsider travel” to both China and Hong Kong “due to arbitrary enforcement of local laws.” The advisory described Hong Kong as under the control of the People’s Republic of China (PRC), a nation that “arbitrarily enforces local laws, including by carrying out arbitrary and wrongful detentions and through the use of exit bans on U.S. citizens and citizens of other countries without due process of law.” “In most cases, U.S. citizens only become aware of an exit ban when they attempt to depart the PRC, and there is no reliable mechanism or legal...
By KELVIN CHAN, AP Business Writer LONDON (AP) — The European Union on Thursday approved Google’s plan to buy fitness gadget maker Fitbit for $2.1 billion after it promised to restrict user data and ensure Android phones work with other wearable devices for at least 10 years. Human rights and consumer groups, which had called on authorities to block the deal over privacy and antitrust concerns, were unhappy with the decision. The deal also attracted scrutiny in Australia, where competition regulators are mulling a similar offer from Google. The EU was initially worried the deal would expand Google’s “data advantage” and raise barriers for rivals in the online ad industry. The EU’s competition commissioner, Margrethe Vestager, said she cleared the deal because Google’s commitments “will ensure that the market for wearables and the nascent digital health space will remain open and competitive.” Google said it “worked constructively” with EU regulators...
Matt Marshall, leader of the Washington Three Percent militia group, wore a "Boogaloo" Hawaiian shirt at an April protest in Olympia. Probably the most insidious aspect of the creep of proto-fascist movements in America is the way they have been able to insinuate themselves within the traditional mainstream, sometimes by attempting to create a false image through the adoption of labels that create an image of legitimacy: Think of the seditious “Patriot” movement with its “III Percent” militias and Oath Keepers that try to claim a nonexistent connection to the Constitution. And then they sometimes actually try to take over existing institutions, such as the various attempts by the alt-right to gain a foothold within local Republican parties. The most vivid recent example of this is occurring on rural Whidbey Island in northwestern Washington state, where a “III Percent” militia group has been slowly taking over one of the local...
It is Mitch McConnell’s turn in the barrel. After the Senate Majority Leader congratulated Joe Biden and Kamala Harris on their victory in the 2020 election, recognizing the pair as president-elect and vice president-elect, media supporters of the president attacked the Kentucky Republican for abandoning efforts to overturn the election. “The Electoral College has spoken,” McConnell said on the Senate floor Tuesday. “I want to congratulate President-elect Joe Biden. The president-elect is no stranger to the Senate. He’s devoted himself to public service for many years. I also want to congratulate the vice president-elect: our colleague from California, Senator Harris. Beyond our differences, all Americans can take pride that our nation has a female vice president-elect for the very first time.” President Donald Trump, his legal team, and his allies in the media have waged a scattershot assault on the results of the election, which saw the incumbent defeated...
Venezuelan President Juan Guaidó urged citizens this weekend to participate in nationwide protests on January 5, the day dictator Nicolás Maduro is set to install a majority loyalist National Assembly to replace the lawmakers who made Guaidó president. Guaidó is currently the president of the National Assembly, the federal legislature, held by opposition lawmakers since 2015. Most free states consider the 2015 parliamentary elections the last free and fair elections in the country. Lawmakers appointed Guaidó president – which is in their power to do as per the Venezuelan constitution – in January 2019 after Maduro’s last legal term as president expired. While legally the president of Venezuela, and widely regarded as such internationally, Guaidó has failed to exercise any meaningful power over the country. (CNN)To hear Georgia Republicans tell it, if Democrats win both runoffs in the state on January 5, the United States will be a socialist utopia on January 6."We know the direction the country would take, and we're going to continue to make sure that Georgians understand that our very way of life here in Georgia and across the country is under attack by the left," said Sen. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos slammed calls to "cancel" student debt or make college free, making a case this week against what she called a "socialist takeover" of education -- and prompting a fiery rebuke from Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. DeVos, who almost certainly will be replaced once President-elect Biden is inaugurated, has been a lightning rod for controversy since her tenure began in 2017; she's pushed deregulation and aimed to increase due process on college campuses, to applause from conservatives and harsh criticism from Democrats. But with an incoming administration likely to take the Department of Education in a sharply different direction, one of President Trump's longest-serving Cabinet secretaries made one last case against "total government control" of higher education Tuesday at the 2020 Federal Student Aid Training Conference.  "Policies should never entice students into greater debt. Nor should they put taxpayer dollars at greater risk. There are too many politicians today who support policy that does both,"...

In a virtual speech on Tuesday, Education Secretary Betsy DeVos made time to decry tuition-free college and student debt relief. As reported by The Washington Post, she described tuition-free college as a "socialist takeover of higher education" as well as “a matter of total government control." DeVos also argued that if college does go tuition-free, higher education will “begin to resemble a failing K-12 school, with the customer service of the DMV to boot.” Surprising no one, DeVos also slammed student debt relief initiatives, saying that politicians who promote it are setting the stage for “the truly insidious notion of government gift-giving.” Also surprising no one, DeVos was met with swift backlash on Twitter. While countless people shared their stories of student debt and the barrier to access education, which particularly impacts people of color and low-income folks, elected officials also called out DeVos for her misguided, harmful rhetoric at the financial...
President-elect Joe Biden introduced Tuesday in Wilmington, Delaware six members  of his diverse economic policy team. Biden and Vice-president elect Kamala Harris championed his picks as the leaders who will usher Americans out of economic turmoil brought on by the coronavirus pandemic. Biden’s expected pick for director of the National Economic Council (NEC) is Brian Deese, who served as both deputy director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) and the NEC during the Obama administration. During his tenure, Deese worked on environmental issues and the auto industry bailout. After his stint with the Obama White House, Deese assumed a role with the investment firm BlackRock, the world’s largest asset manager. Jeff Hauser, director of the Revolving Door Project, a group that monitors corporate interests and influence in government told Reuters that BlackRock’s stake in policy decisions could compel Deese to recuse himself in some situations. “He will either...

Elon Musk, CEO of TeslaBeck Diefenbach | Reuters Tesla CEO Elon Musk addressed a theoretical question about whether or not Tesla would be game for a merger with one of the incumbent car companies. "I think we're definitely not going to launch a hostile takeover," Musk told Axel Springer CEO Mathias Döpfner on Tuesday during a live event streamed to YouTube. Döpfner pressed Musk if he's consider a friendly takeover. "If somebody said, 'hey, we think it would be a good idea to merge with Tesla,' we'd certainly have that conversation. But we don't want it to be a hostile takeover situation," Musk replied. The scenario was purely theoretical. Tesla currently needs its capital for other things, like its battery plans, mining, and manufacturing advances that it has said will lead to, among other things, lower vehicle prices. In a letter to employees on Tuesday, for example, Musk highlighted...
