PREMIER LEAGUE games are at real risk of being called off after Mateo Kovacic became the latest player to test positive for coronavirus. On Tuesday, Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel has confirmed Kovacic has tested positive for coronavirus having only just returned to training. It sparks fears of an outbreak at the Blues akin to Tottenham's current crisis. Spurs are reportedly considering asking to postpone Sunday's game against Brighton after at least SEVEN players and two members of staff returned positive tests. In the latest figures, the Premier League reported their were 12 positive tests last week - the highest since the week of August 16-22, when there were 16. And with another club seemingly struck by a potential outbreak, Prem officials may be forced to consider postponing games at the very least. MORE TO FOLLOW... Last week Atletico Mineiro clinched their first Brazilian league title for 50 years with a fearsome strike force of Hulk and Diego Costa. This has reminded older supporters of the centre forward from their previous triumph back in 1971 - one of the great characters of the Brazilian game, and a player whose deeds and life story deserves a wider audience. 3Hulk and Diego Costa celebrate Atletico Mineiro's Brazilian league triumphCredit: Reuters 3Atletico Mineiro fans have been reminiscing about former striker Dario Dario was part of the Brazil squad that won the 1970 World Cup. But though he warmed up once, he was never called upon. He played just six full games for his country between 1970 and 73, and his only goals for Brazil came in unofficial matches against club sides. It has been unkindly suggested that he was only in the squad because the president of Brazil demanded his inclusion. This view shows a glaring lack of respect for coach Mario Zagallo. Because it would have been insanity not to have him in the squad. He would never...

Buck O’Neil, who spent most of his life as a tireless advocate for the Negro Leagues, will finally be inducted in the Baseball Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2022. More than seven decades have passed since John “Buck” O’Neil last played a game in organized baseball. Nearly 60 years have passed since he coached in the Majors. He died 15 years ago after spending his entire 94 years devoted to the game of baseball. O’Neil wasn’t the best baseball player. At a time when the door to the Majors was denied to men of his skin color, what counts as official Negro League statistics assign him a .258 average and nine home runs. O’Neil himself insisted that, in the haphazard way such statistics were kept, he was actually a .300 hitter. But, if the Negro Leagues are mentioned today, Buck’s smiling face is likely the first image that comes to mind. He was the consummate storyteller, recalling days when he played with Satchel Paige and against Josh Gibson. For most of his life, nobody listened. That...
(CNN)Baseball legends who played in the Negro Leagues are finally getting a chance to take their rightful place in the National Baseball Hall of Fame. The Early Baseball Era and Golden Days Era Committees were meeting Sunday to decide whether Buck O'Neil and other Negro League players -- as well as pre-Negro league players -- will be selected for induction into the Hall of Fame. In total, 20 players are being considered for induction.Candidates for induction include O'Neil, who played 10 seasons with the Memphis Red Sox and Kansas City Monarchs, and Grant "Home Run" Johnson, who was a shortstop and second baseman in the pre-Negro Leagues era, according to the Hall of Fame website. Grant "Home Run" Johnson is up for consideration for induction into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Each 16-member committee will consider candidates on their ballot, and any candidate receiving votes on at least 75% of all ballots cast will earn induction, according to the Hall of Fame's website. Those elected will be inducted in Cooperstown, New York, on July 24, 2022.Sunday's vote comes one year after...
The Italian man wounded in a Manhattan stabbing spree that left a Columbia University student dead is also connected to the school, it has been revealed. Roberto Malaspina, 27, is an Italian PhD candidate who arrived in New York just a day before the attack to undertake a research project, Columbia president Lee Bollinger said on Saturday. Malaspina was wounded in the deranged stabbing spree on Thursday night in Harlem, in which Columbia PhD candidate Davide Giri, 30, was stabbed in the stomach and killed.  Known gang member Vincent Pinkney, 25, was arrested minutes after the two attacks as he wielded a large kitchen knife and menaced a couple walking hand-in-hand in Central Park. But that shouldn’t stop them from plotting. The Cardinals will have the same pressing needs after the lockout as they did before Dec. 2. The only difference will be the time that goes by, and any potential rule changes that impact exactly how St. Louis general manager Mike Girsch goes about filling those holes. The Cardinals specifically ought to target a middle infielder, relief pitching and perhaps even a former team great. (CNN)On October 5, 2013, Adnan Januzaj made his mark in a big way. In what was his first league start for Manchester United, the slight youngster scored two goals in a dramatic comeback against Sunderland -- his second a stunning left-foot volley. It was a special performance that got fans excited and hopeful that the club had unearthed yet another major talent in the game. For the player himself, it kick-started a promising breakthrough season for the then 18-year-old; Januzaj scored four league goals in 27 appearances in a side struggling for identity in the post-Alex Ferguson era. His good form, trickiness and eye for the spectacular were rewarded with a bumper five-year deal but things quickly began to change. Read MoreUnited sacked David Moyes -- someone Januzaj rates highly as both a coach and person -- in 2014 and new manager Louis Van Gaal started using the youngster more sparingly. Loan spells at Borussia Dortmund and Sunderland did little to boost his reputation at the club, and he eventually was sold to Real Sociedad by then United manager Jose...
Shortly after midnight on Thursday morning, moments after Major League Baseball locked out its players, visitors to mlb.com and associated team web sites noticed something strange: All photos and content about players on 40-man rosters had been removed.  Visitors to the Twins site found no mention of the $100 million contract Byron Buxton signed just Wednesday morning. Instead, they saw a letter to fans from Commissioner Rob Manfred (yuck) and a bunch of old stories about the 2022 schedule, the 1987 World Series and Bert Blyleven’s 3,000th strikeout. What’s up with that? MLB says that to comply with federal labor law, it won’t promote players’ names, images and likenesses during the lockout. (Minor leaguers not on 40-man rosters aren’t affected because they don’t belong to the MLB Players Association.) It’s yet another sign that both sides remain far apart on key issues, and the 2022 season probably won’t start on time.  And you thought four-hour playoffs games were MLB’s biggest problem. Article continues after advertisement If you’re wondering how MLB went from 26 years of labor peace to this, here’s...

There are the Warriors and there are the Suns. Then there’s a big gap between them and the NBA’s 28 other teams. So thank goodness the NBA’s two best squads are finally going to play each other this week. For the Warriors (18-2), who have aced every test they’ve faced through a quarter of the season, back-to-back matchups with the Suns (17-3) on Tuesday and Friday in Arizona and San Francisco respectively represent the toughest tests yet. There’s no question that the Warriors are an exceptional team, but are they the best? At this point in the season, only Phoenix — winners of 16 straight games — could make a more than fair claim on that favorite status. And while the season is still in its early days, this checkpoint for both teams will establish a pecking order heading into the true-but-unofficial start of the NBA season — Christmas, when these two teams will play again. These two teams are — for the first time in a long time and probably for the first...

ZURICH (AP) — FIFA confirmed dates for the delayed 2021 Club World Cup on Monday, with the Feb. 3-12 tournament in the United Arab Emirates requiring Chelsea to postpone two Premier League games. The schedule was announced hours before the tournament draw was being made in Zurich. The seven-team lineup was completed Saturday when Palmeiras won the Copa Libertadores. Chelsea, the Champions League winner, and Palmeiras enter at the semifinals stage and then go on to play the final or a third-place game. Premier League leader Chelsea had been due to play Feb. 8 at Brighton and host Arsenal on Feb. 12. Those games should now be rescheduled. The tournament also includes African champion Al Ahly, Asian champion Al Hilal, CONCACAF Champions League winner Monterrey, Oceania champion Auckland City plus the host nation’s domestic title winner, Al Jazira. The COVID-19 pandemic has twice altered plans for the 2021 Club World Cup. It was originally to be the inaugural expanded edition in China in June and July. That launch was shelved by FIFA when the 2020 editions of the European Championship...
MADRID (AP) — Atlético Madrid got the goals flowing in the second half, with Antoine Griezmann among the scorers in a 4-1 win at Cádiz that moved the team to second place in the Spanish league. Thomas Lemar, Ángel Correa and Matheus Cunha also scored after halftime for Atlético as it rebounded from a surprising home loss to AC Milan that left it in danger of elimination from the Champions League. Diego Simeone’s team had won only one of its last four matches in all competitions. The league victory at Cádiz gave Atlético 29 points from 14 matches, one point less than Real Madrid ahead of the rival’s home match against Sevilla later Sunday. After a slow start, Atlético secured the three points in southern Spain by scoring three goals in a 20-minute span. Lemar broke the deadlock in the 56th, then Griezmann scored in the 70th and Correa in the 76th. Cunha added a fourth in the 86th, after Cádiz had pulled one closer in a rare own-goal by Atlético goalkeeper Jan Oblak, who couldn’t swat away...

(CNN)It was Premier League club Newcastle United's first match of a new era. St. James' Park was packed to capacity with expectant fans and the sound of jubilant chants filled the air on the Tyneside on Sunday, October 17th.Following the club's controversial takeover by the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund [PIF], the mood of the Northern English city has been nothing but celebratory and the atmosphere at that particular match was close to delirious. The black-and-white colors of the club could be seen in every stand, on shirts and adorning flags, while a giant banner was held up to spell out some of the words from a famous song about the River Tyne that Newcastle proudly sits upon:"This is a mighty town built upon a solid ground and everything they've tried so hard to kill -- we will rebuild," the flag read. The banner alludes to the supposed 'killing' of Newcastle United, a perceived death many fans of the club have spent the past 14 years grieving over following the acquisition of the club by UK retail boss Mike Ashley -- who...
In this article MLFB Soccer in the U.S. has not always had the best track record. Its popularity fluctuates, and interest is usually tied to significant events, such as the World Cup or the Olympics. She said a “small scale and limited pilot” on the sale of alcohol “in sight of the pitch” would help struggling clubs rake in extra cash. Ms Crouch added yesterday: “This is about the financial sustainability of the lowest parts of the league — such a small change would make a huge difference.” Research suggests an average League Two club loses around £184,000 a season by not being able to sell booze to fans watching matches. The Argentine is best known for his spell at Tottenham, where he got them challenging in the top four and guided them to a Champions League final. United are also looking at Leicester City boss Brendan Rodgers. The 48-year-old managed the team to FA Cup glory last term, once again proving he's a top manager. Rodgers also had a good spell at Liverpool between 2012-15, but came up short in the pursuit of the Prem title in the 2013-14 season. THE Champions League group stages are nearly at their end and Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool are already thinking ahead. The Reds, Blues and United have already qualified for the knockout stages of Europe's top competition and can start planning for the ties in the new year. 1Chelsea legend Branislav Ivanovic was at the group stage draw back in SeptemberCredit: Reuters In fact, all three sides can put out reserves for their final Champions League game and still not worry about being in the draw for the last 16. Manchester United pulled their socks up after sacking Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to beat Villarreal 2-0, while Chelsea hammered Italian giants Juventus 4-0 as both sides secured their places. City can qualify if they beat Paris Saint-Germain tonight, but a point could also do the job, while Liverpool secured their spot in the knockout stages with two games to spare. The last group stage games take place on December 7 and 8, so the draw will be shortly after. What date is the Champions League last 16 draw and what time does...
Tashaun Gipson’s first four NFL seasons came with the Cleveland Browns, who at the time had the distinction as the most wayward and dysfunctional organization in the league. From 2012-15, Gipson experienced 19 wins and 45 losses, played for three head coaches and endured a shift in owners when Jimmy Haslam bought the Browns from Randy Lerner in the middle of the 2012 season. That franchise seemed to live inside a pocket of turbulence. Drama and tension were constant. Instability felt inevitable. Failure became the expectation. “Those were bad locker rooms I was a part of,” Gipson said Tuesday afternoon. “It was more of the norm to have internal (issues) where guys were just all over the place with emotions.” Now a starting safety for the Chicago Bears, Gipson realizes his early NFL existence kept taking him to the same place: last place. Every season in Cleveland, in fact. In 2014, Gipson lived through the bizarre soap opera in which rookie quarterback Johnny Manziel went missing from the team on the final weekend of the...
A Texas youth football team has been booted from their league in the middle of the playoffs season for 'being too good'. The Flower Mound Rebels, a team of seven and eight-year-olds, won seven games during their season with a combined score of 199-6.  The Rebels asked the Keller Youth Association to join its leage after the pandemic made it difficult to field a team. But, they were deemed too good to play by the association and were ultimately kicked out of the upcoming playoffs because they were as good as a select level team instead of a peewee team - despite many of the players never having played before. 'This is the Keller league, not the Flower Mound league,' Rhett Taylor, the vice president of the association, told KXAS-TV.  'In my mind, they've dominated our league. My team got one first down all game. And my team is good.   The Flower Mound Rebels, a Texas youth football team, were booted out of their league in the middle of playoffs season for 'being too good'  The team of 7 and...
LeBron James is missing one game. Markieff Morris is missing his eighth, with no end in sight. Those two things are more connected than some might realize. CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM By suspending James for Tuesday night’s game against New York — the Los Angeles Lakers’ lone visit to Madison Square Garden this season — over his role in an incident in Detroit on Sunday, the NBA sent a very loud, very clear message to anyone who might want to partake in future on-court dustups. Enough is enough. Sunday night’s mess in Detroit — the second significant on-court fracas in the NBA this season — earned James the first suspension of his 19-year career, plus got the Pistons’ Isaiah Stewart a two-game suspension on top of the eight stitches that were needed to close a gash in his head. "He felt like he got a cheap shot across his brow," Pistons coach Dwane Casey said. "On the street, it’d be a different story." Maybe so. But the NBA isn't played on the street and the league...
MANCHESTER UNITED are on their knees after having to sack Ole Gunnar Solskjaer following a brutal run of form. The Red Devils have lost seven of their last 13 games in all competitions, culminating in Saturday's 4-1 drubbing at the hands of Watford. 3 3Michael Carrick takes charge of Man United tonightCredit: Getty With Solskjaer since dispensed with, Michael Carrick takes interim charge for tonight's Champions League clash with Villarreal. While the Norwegian was the hero in 1999, Carrick was part of United's last side to win the famous competition back in 2008. But he is currently faced with a bunch that are nowhere near as good as that golden team. Edwin van der Sar at that point was a more reliable goalkeeper than David de Gea. While Wes Brown was more dependable than this season's erratic Aaron Wan-Bissaka. Luke Shaw has had a disappointing time since his Euro 2020 heroics, and would be edged out by Patrice Evra. CLEVELAND (AP) — (EDITOR’S NOTE: Hall of Famer Wayne Embry, a five-time NBA All-Star and the first African American general manager in sports when the Milwaukee Bucks named him to that position in 1972, shares some of his experiences of playing in the league during the 1960s. The demand for Civil Rights and the Vietnam War were among the issues dividing the country and the foundation was being formed in the NBA that league and players stand on today.) The Sixties were a turbulent time in our country –- and in the NBA –- as the battle for Civil Rights raged. That battle reached my hotel room in Philadelphia in the spring of 1965, when my wife Terri called from Cincinnati to tell me she and Oscar Robertson’s wife Yvonne were going to join Dr. Martin Luther King’s march from Selma to Montgomery. “Are you crazy?” I asked. This was less than two weeks after Bloody Sunday, when Alabama state troopers on horseback attacked the nonviolent marchers with tear gas, clubs and dogs after they crossed the Edmund Pettus Bridge...
Zombie leagues are coming back. After XFL, it is USFL’s method to attempt rebirth. In April 2022, the USFL will again be divided into eight divisions, the North and the South. In the north, we find the Michigan Panthers, the New Jersey Generals, the Philadelphia Stars and the Pittsburgh Mowlers. In the south, it’s Birmingham stallions, Houston gamblers, New Orleans breakers and Tampa Bay bandits. These are the names of the owners at the time. On the other hand, those in charge are no longer the same. In the 1980s, Donald Trump, for example, owned the Generals. Each team is expected to play in 10 regular season games. The top two teams from each division will meet in the semifinals and then in the title match. $ 1 League In service from 1983 to 1986, the American Football League sank as it sued the NFL for breach of trust laws. One case won, which earned him 1 index dollar. This amount was tripled to $ 3, therefore, under hopeless laws. The move ended with losses estimated at $ 163 million...

For the sake of brevity, we’re just going to focus in on the top six teams as the league (as I see them). (CNN)Within hours of Manchester United announcing the sacking of manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the hashtag 'ThankYouOle' started trending. It was yet another reminder that, despite disappointing results, the club as a global brand seems to be as strong as ever, continuing to boast a social media following that is the envy of many sports entities worldwide. No club in the Premier League, for instance, can come close to matching United's Twitter following of 28.5 million people -- league leader Chelsea comes closest with almost 10 million less. But winning the social media race will offer fans little consolation, with Solskjaer's departure coming at a time when the club is falling further behind its rivals on the pitch.Last year's runner-up is currently languishing in eighth after four losses in its last five league games and the team, particularly the defense, looks short of organization and structure.
