DEAR MISS MANNERS: I spent two days cooking a flawless Thanksgiving dinner for immediate family (due to COVID restrictions). It was just us, my partner’s daughter and her family (husband, toddler and mother-in-law). That’s it. The guests were assigned to either bring a pie and/or some wine. That was their only contribution. After the meal was over, my partner’s daughter got up from the table and opened a large backpack, which I had assumed was for the toddler’s things. Nope. It was full of food containers. She asked if I wanted any leftovers, to which I said, “Yes, of course.” She then proceeded to take all the best cuts of the turkey, all the trimmings and side dishes, the stuffing that was in the bird (the best part) and even 90% of the leftover desserts — a pie she brought, a pecan pie I provided and a cake her mother-in-law made. She left us one piece of pecan and two small pieces of pumpkin. Related Articles Miss Manners: I thought my offer was polite. His response startled me....
Dear Amy: My father has a habit of giving cash to my brother and me if we are going on a family vacation. Amy Dickinson  He has done this since we were children, so we could treat ourselves while away. This continues, even now that we are adults with careers of our own. Dad is not a man of many words or outward emotions, and I know this is a way of showing affection. On a trip this year, he gave us each $350 in cash. My husband thinks this is weird. He disapproves. He gets upset when I accept money from my father, so I have stopped telling him about it, but if he finds out about it anyway, then he is upset that I hid it from him. He acts as though I’m being dishonest. DEAR HARRIETTE: My father had another child many years after I was born. I overheard him telling my aunt that my younger sibling is so much “easier.” Harriette Cole  I don’t know if this means that he found me hard to raise, or if it’s just easier this time because he has already learned the ropes. Should I take offense to this? I don’t really want to confront him about it if it wasn’t a big deal. First Born DEAR FIRST BORN: Nothing good can come out of exploring what you overheard. Do not take offense. Your father’s experience with you when you were born was based on all kinds of circumstances over which you had absolutely no control. Now, as a mature man, he knows more, may be more stable in his life and is in a different position to handle a child. That is likely what “easier” means to him. His evaluation is probably about himself, not about you or your sibling. Be happy for your father and your sibling. Do your best to establish your own relationship...

A 16-YEAR-OLD teenager confessed that she accidentally made her father’s girlfriend dump him.  However, she said she was just doing her part in warning the woman about his tendency to dump anyone over the age of 23. 3A man's girlfriend broke up with him after his daughter warned her about his relationship tendenciesCredit: Getty 3The daughter feels she was just being truthfulCredit: Getty “My 45-year-old dad has this habit of dating college-age women and dumping them after like two or three years [and] then complaining about how needy and clingy they were,” the teen began in her anonymous post on Reddit.  “It's been going on my entire life and it really annoys me “It's seriously like he's allergic to any woman over 23.” She added that she’s made “half jokey comments” about how she thinks the tendency is “creepy,” but her dad tells her it’s none of her business. She argued that it is her business, however, because he complains to her after dumping his young girlfriends. The teenager then noted that she was recently introduced to her father’s...
A DESPERATE Afghan father was forced to sell his five-year-old daughter to a 52-year-old man in a bid to feed his starving family. Qadir, 35, an impoverished labourer in the north-west of the war-torn country, has spent the past two years waiting for the paedophile to come and collect his "goods." 3Zohra, now aged seven, was sold to a man, 52, for £1,386 The father, who has six other children including a baby daughter, used to earn £2 a day - however since the Taliban took over in August, his earning have diminished even further. Ethan Williams was shot and killed during a trip to New York City last October and his father Jason Williams spoke up on "America Reports" and corrected what had been falsely reported about the nature of his death. Williams explained that the tragedy has been told by other news publications as a stray bullet striking his son dead. But the Indiana father clarified that the exchange was intentional, as the 20-year-old was shot down while sitting with his friends on the front porch of their Airbnb in Brooklyn. "He was ambushed," he said. "A gunman walked up to them and fired six bullets towards them. The boys ran into the house, checked each other, made sure they were ok and someone said, ‘Where’s Ethan?’ And Ethan never got off of the step." When he was eight years old, Wilbur Smith saw his father kill three man-eating lions. The animals attacked their safari camp at night and, woken by the screams of a guide, Herbert Smith grabbed a torch and his heavy rifle. On the way out of his tent, Herbert lunged headfirst into the tent pole and smashed his nose open. Wilbur saw the gush of blood, and at the same moment realised his father was wearing only a pyjama top, and was naked from the waist down. Then the lion charged. Herbert trained the torch beam on it with his left hand, raised the rifle with his right and shot from the waist, as if he was holding a pistol. He hit the lion in the chest. Seconds later, he brought down the two lionesses. (CNN)I was 4 years old when my mom took me to meet my dad for the first time. I thought we were traveling to a park or a playground, but then we arrived outside Insein prison in Rangoon (present day Yangon), Burma, and I was even more impressed. It was a massive compound with an imposing red entrance and more guards than I could count. Wai Hnin Pwint Thon "Is daddy very wealthy?," I asked. My mom told me to keep quiet and stay close to her. Men in uniform drilled her with questions, while other guards rummaged through the gifts that we had brought for my dad. After waiting for hours in the scorching sun, we were finally allowed into a room where we met a man dressed in all white, and in handcuffs and shackles. I recognized him instantly -- this was my father whose photo had hung on a glass cabinet in my house for as far back as I could remember. His wild hair from the photo wasn't so wild anymore, but he still had...
Meghan Markle wrote her now-infamous letter to her father asking him to stop talking to the media to protect her husband, Prince Harry, from “constant berating” by his family before their 2018 wedding, a trove of text messages released Friday by London’s Court of Appeal sensationally revealed. In a heretofore unprecedented glimpse into the troubled relationship between Harry and Prince Charles, Meghan wrote to her former communications chief, Jason Knauf, that she was writing the letter to her estranged father, Thomas Markle, because Harry was being pressured by his father. In a series of texts to Knauf, which he turned over to the court, Meghan wrote of her plan to write the letter: “The catalyst for my doing this is seeing how much pain this is causing H. Even after a week with his dad and endlessly explaining the situation, his family seem to forget the context—and revert to ‘can’t she just go and see him and make this stop?’ They fundamentally don’t understand so at least by writing H will be able to say to his family… ‘She wrote...

(CNN)Last year, like many people across the US, I couldn't imagine feeling more anxious about a presidential election than I did in November 2020. In the weeks leading up to the vote, I followed every twist of an often surreal and harrowing campaign. Roberto Aguirre-SacasaEvery Sunday night, I would call my father, a horse farmer and part-time political pundit in Nicaragua, who would give me his analysis of the week's events, followed by a simple question: "Have you voted yet?" Then, he would say, "This is probably the most important election of your lifetime." And it was—at the time. Now, an even more crucial election for me and my ancestral country is happening in Nicaragua this weekend—and most people in the US aren't following it. The anxiety I experienced last year has given way to outright dread as my family's homeland prepares to elect its next president. When it comes to the question of who will win, the outcome is a foregone conclusion. Nicaragua has regressed into a dictatorship led by President Daniel Ortega and his wife, Vice President Rosario...

His father had abandoned him at six months old, and he feared that he would follow in those same footsteps. Even though Gilmore had later received some form of an explanation from his mother. And he grew up with a father figure after his mother remarried. Gilmore just couldn’t shake the fear of bringing a child into the world. After explaining his fear to his partner, who had broached the subject. She reminded him of a magpie that Gilmore had recently mothered after she had been rescued. Ransom Eli Olds invented the Oldsmobile automobile in 1896, but it was just called Olds. The first year of the Olds Motor Vehicle Co. was 1897, when four cars were built, and by 1900 the Oldsmobile name was used for the first time. Oldsmobile became the second division of General Motors in 1908, and Ransom Olds departed to formed a new company called REO (his initials) Motor Co. Many think Henry Ford invented the assembly line, but it was actually Olds who built the famous Curved Dash Olds from 1901 to 1904 using that method. This 1971 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme convertible belongs to Andre Ospital-Cone, of Alamo. (David Krumboltz — for Bay Area News Group)  Oldsmobile was the experimental division for GM. A new idea or invention would be tried with Olds first before the other division would use it. In 1940, for example, Oldsmobile offered a completely automatic four-speed transmission called Hydramatic. In 1949 they introduced their overhead-valve-design Rocket V8 engine which produced more power than the flathead straight-8 design and became very popular with the hot-rod and stock...

Karlla said it all happened 'very fast'.  'I just heard my husband screaming,' she told Crescer.  She said: 'When I got there, she was calm, not crying, just her heart racing. DEAR ABBY: I have recently unearthed some of my old journals. Jeanne Phillips  In them I wrote honestly about my life — my kids, husband, pets, etc. They were a way to vent as well as to describe what my days were like as I kept a home, gardened, worked full time, cared for the kids, etc. A few of the entries concern my spouse who I’m still married to, and they are not flattering. They describe his refusal to help with the chores, his secretive drinking and almost bankrupting us more than once. There are also stories about my children (who are now in their 40s) as children. I was wrong,' McCain says in her upcoming audio memoir Bad Republican.  In January, on her second day back from leave, she was having a squabble with Behar about the state of the Democratic Party. The controversial son of President Joe Biden has been selling artwork for five and six-figure amounts, despite the fact that he has relatively zero experience, training, or standing in the art world. This has raised a reasonable set of ethical questions surrounding the peddling of influence around the White House, though the Biden administration has from the very beginning of this story, have been careful with how they have handled this story. At issue in this segment is White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki dismissing a question about Hunter Biden’s artwork being sold for $75,000 by saying the purchaser is still unknown, an answer which drew criticism from Obama-era US Government ethics Director Walter Shaub: These are legitimate questions. It’s disappointing to hear @jrpsaki send a message that the WH thinks the public has no right to ask about ethics. After the last 4 years, these questions have never been...
