Getty Levi Onwuzurike makes a tackle on Najee Harris in a 2021 game. The Detroit Lions have played better on defense in recent weeks and a big reason has to do with the play of plenty of members of the team’s 2021 rookie class. Detroit has seen numerous players step up and deliver who were on the younger side, so it was a major thrill for the team to witness defensive lineman Levi Onwuzurike score his first sack of the season on Thanksgiving Day. The play got the Detroit defense off the field, and provided the rookie lineman with some major payoff in what’s been a challenging year. The latest Lions news straight to your inbox! Getty Amani Oruwariye dives for an interception of the Bears in 2021. The Detroit Lions remain winless on the 2021 season, but it hasn’t been for a lack of effort. Getty O.J. Simpson during a 2017 parole hearing in Nevada. It might seem like hyperbole to say the Detroit Lions are setting back the game of football with their offensive play calls in 2021, but with a national television audience on Thanksgiving, the rest of the world got to understand how that could potentially be the case. The Lions struggled badly against the Chicago Bears to the tune of just 14 points and an ugly 239 yards of total offense. Getty Jared Goff talks with the referees and Matt Nagy during the Lions-Bears game in 2021. The Detroit Lions were defeated by the Chicago Bears on Thanksgiving Day 16-14, and the team had plenty of chances to expand their lead and put away their first victory of the year. In spite of that, the team made sloppy mistakes and that was punctuated by the fact that they had 10 penalties on the day for 67 yards. As Cairo Santos sent a 28-yard field goal through the uprights while the seconds wound down Thursday afternoon, he saved the Chicago Bears from a bad week turning into an even bigger embarrassment. The Bears didn’t need to give the Detroit Lions their first win of the season on Thanksgiving at Ford Field. Not after Bears rookie Justin Fields injured his ribs and was forced to sit out. Not after a report emerged that Bears ownership told coach Matt Nagy it was going to fire him after the Thanksgiving game. Not after Nagy’s bosses left him to refute the report to the media himself. Santos’ field goal in the final seconds lifted the Bears to a 16-14 victory over the Lions that snapped a five-game losing streak and ended a nightmare of a week. 10 thoughts after the Chicago Bears went on an 18-play drive that lasted the final 8 minutes, 30 seconds of Thursday’s game at Ford Field to set up Cairo Santos’ walk-off 28-yard field goal to defeat the Detroit Lions 16-14 and end a five-game losing streak. 1. Matt Nagy got a reprieve as the Bears encountered a team that consistently does more head-scratching and unpredictably dumb football stuff than they do. The Bears were able to take advantage — even if it required every second of all 60 minutes — and extend the misery of the Lions, who fell to 0-10-1 and have not won since a Dec. 6, 2020, trip to Soldier Field last season. The Lions are 0-14-1 since that afternoon, which was their first game after firing general manager Bob Quinn and coach Matt Patricia on Thanksgiving weekend. The Lions opted to reboot their franchise over the holiday a year ago, and while it looked earlier this week like there was a possibility the Bears would begin a similar process, now it appears that plan...
Who knows what the Thanksgiving traditions are in Matt Nagy’s household? But it’s a good bet that once the Chicago Bears coach returned home from Detroit on Thursday evening, he found his way to the liquor supply and poured himself a drink. Extra stiff. What a freaking week, right? And the tumult may be just getting started. After the Bears suffered a brutal home loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday and then followed with three days of commotion centered around the coach’s job security and grip on the locker room, Bears players regrouped just enough Thursday to sneak past the miserable Lions 16-14 at Ford Field. The victory itself was far from impressive. Miles from it actually, merely earning the Bears an “At least you’re not the Lions” medallion. But at the very least, it ended the team’s 45-day stretch without a victory, snapped a five-game losing streak and allowed Nagy some much-needed relief as he headed into a long weekend. “This is about the team,” Nagy said during a 10-minute postgame news conference....

Cole Kmet had to turn off his phone this week. Enough thoughts already were racing through the Chicago Bears tight end’s head as he tried to prepare for Thursday’s game against the Detroit Lions on a short week while also sifting through a blizzard of rumors about coach Matt Nagy’s job status. He didn’t need to add questions from his friends and family to the mix, as much as the Chicago-area native might understand the craving for info about a bizarre week in Lake Forest. “I’m not going to lie, it’s tough,” Kmet said of the Bears’ week. “You don’t know what’s true, what’s not. Then you see things that are true because you were there for them, and you wonder how those things get out. “So there’s a lot of confusion in that sense. On Sunday November 14, 2021, the Pittsburgh Steelers and Detroit Lions played to a 16-16 tie at Heinz Field, a display of “awful football” on the part of both teams. For one longtime Steelers fan, the game—and perhaps the overtime period in particular—was literally the last straw. According to the obituary of Wayne Olexa of Crafton, Pa., the 76-year-old died “after a long bout with the Steelers. He was at his home with family when (the Steelers) went into overtime against the 0-8 Detroit Lions and that was all he could take.” Indeed the latter stages of that game were particularly hard to watch. The Chicago Bears will try to move past a strange couple of days and focus on topping the Detroit Lions on Thursday at Ford Field. After the Bears’ fifth straight loss Sunday against the Baltimore Ravens, their short week to get ready for the Lions was disrupted by a report that the Bears planned to fire coach Matt Nagy after the Thanksgiving game. Bears Chairman George McCaskey told players and coaches that report was not true, according to the Athletic, but it still put a wrinkle in the team’s preparations. Now the Bears will try to put that distraction out of their minds as they get ready to start quarterback Andy Dalton for the first time since Sept. 19. Meanwhile, the 0-9-1 Lions will try for their first win of the season behind quarterback Jared Goff, who recovered from an oblique injury and is expected to start, according to NFL Network. Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff should be available for the Thanksgiving game against the Chicago Bears barring a setback. The Lions faced off with the Browns last weekend with Tim Boyle at the helm because Jared Goff had an oblique injury. Goff went into this week as a game-time decision but with the Thanksgiving meeting with the Bears approaches, there seems to be some clarity about his availability.Lions plan to start Jared Goff vs. BearsIan Rapoport reported that “the Lions are planning to start QB Jared Goff (oblique) tomorrow…barring any setback overnight.” Detroit is still seeking their first win of the season but they’ve played most opponents close. Boyle came close to pulling off a miracle against the Browns, losing 13-10, despite throwing for just 77 yards. He threw two interceptions as well. Goff hasn’t had much more success in the winning department but he can definitely sling it more capably than Boyle. He’s averaging 234.3 yards per game with a rating of 84.0. He has eight touchdowns and six interceptions. The Lions may be one strong performance from...
Getty Jerry Jacobs celebrates the Lions game in Cleveland in 2021. Jerry Jacobs has been a revelation for the Detroit Lions this season at cornerback, and the rookie undrafted free agent is a great example of how sticking to a plan can help a player land a full-time role in the league. Not even Jacobs probably figured that he would crack the Detroit roster, but he did. After he managed to do that, Jacobs was soon thrust into a full-time role by virtue of the fact that multiple injuries played out around him. Quickly, he was able to earn the trust of the team and the staff and has continued to do that with some hard work every single day in the facility. The latest Lions news straight to your inbox! Thanksgiving Day is traditionally brought you by the three F’s: Family, food and football. And it is one of the best days of the year, even if your favorite team isn’t taking the field, because Thanksgiving Day football has brought the NFL some of its most famous moments. While the Dallas Cowboys and Detroit Lions play every year, players from those teams have not necessarily produced some of the best moments from the final Thursday of November. Here are some of the top moments from the Thanksgiving Day games over the last several years. Getty AJ Parker celebrates an interception for the Lions in Cleveland. The Detroit Lions keep inching closer to turning their season around, and if they manage to get it done, it’s going to be on the defensive side of the ball. After a shaky start to the season, Detroit’s defense is rounding into form a bit and managing to keep the team in games. Over the last few weeks, Detroit’s defense has not been the reason the Lions have lost games, but rather, the reason they were in them in the first place. For a short week, the lead-up to the Chicago Bears’ game against the Detroit Lions on Thursday has had a whole lot of drama. An injury to rookie quarterback Justin Fields and the return of veteran Andy Dalton as the starter. A report that coach Matt Nagy had been told he will be fired after the Thanksgiving game and Nagy’s subsequent denial. And — oh, yeah — the Bears trying to move past a five-game losing streak after giving up game-winning drives in the last minute of the last two games. Getty Andy Dalton throws for the Bears against the Ravens. The Detroit Lions are looking everywhere to try and find some momentum in the second half of the season, and they will be trying for their very first win in Week 12 against the Chicago Bears on Thanksgiving Day. At this point, the Lions can’t take anything for granted even as they have played much better in recent weeks and have come closer to a win. The Bears are struggling as well, losers of five straight games. None of that seems to matter in the minds of the oddsmakers, however, leading into the first Thanksgiving game of 2021. The NFL has come down hard on taunting this season, and on Sunday Detroit Lions offensive lineman Jonah Jackson was given a costly unsportsmanlike conduct after insulting Cleveland Browns defender Jadeveon Clowney’s mother.  Lions coach Dan Campbell told reporters after the game that both sides were going at it late in the third quarter when "something about somebody’s mother" was said.  BAKER MAYFIELD’S WIFE, EMILY, SHARES POST CRITICIZING BROWNS PLAYERS, QUICKLY DELETES IT "I don’t know what to tell you," he said, via the Detroit Free Press. Getty Roger Goodell during the 2021 NFL Draft in Cleveland, Ohio. The Detroit Lions remain the only winless team in the NFL, but all that negativity has come with one major positive in the form of the 2022 NFL draft order. At this point in time, the Lions continue to take small steps toward ensuring that all the losing comes with the benefit of the first pick in the draft next year, and it’s becoming harder to ignore that the team may be in the driver’s seat for that selection when all is said and done. Much to coach Mike Zimmer’s consternation, the Minnesota Vikings have made quite the habit of these white-knuckle, high-stress finishes. All that experience must be paying off. They deftly followed the winning formula for beating the Green Bay Packers by making sure Aaron Rodgers was on the sideline at the end and not on the field. Greg Joseph made a 29-yard field goal as time expired to give the host Vikings a 34-31 victory over the Packers in a classic back-and-forth with their division rival and longtime nemesis. “You know how they say, ‘Sunday is fun day’? It’s not at all,” an exhausted Zimmer said after the game was decided on the final snap for a sixth time in 10 games. The Vikings (5-5) have won three and lost three of those. The only team in the NFL this year to hold a lead of seven or more points in every game, all but one of the Vikings’ games have been decided by one score. Kirk Cousins passed for 341 yards and three touchdowns to help the...
