SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) — Officers patrolling San Francisco neighborhoods during a crackdown of the rampant surge of vehicle smash-and-grab burglaries have arrested four men and a juvenile and seized several firearms. The citywide auto burglary and armed robbery abatement operation took place over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. READ MORE: Smash-And-Grab Thieves Hit San Jose Eastridge Mall Jewelry Store; 5 SoughtInvestigators said that on Black Friday at approximately 4:55 p.m., officers were patrolling the area of Fulton and Lyon Streets when they observed a white sedan actively casing multiple vehicles. Officers moved in and contained the vehicle. Both suspects attempted to flee the scene, but were taken into custody. The suspects have been identified as 28-year-old Donnell Lee Mark of Vallejo and a 15-year-old juvenile from San Francisco. A search of the suspects’ vehicle uncovered a fully operational “ghost gun” as well as personal belongings and several items of evidence linking them to numerous auto break-ins. Mark has been booked into San Francisco County jail on charges that included second-degree burglary, possession of burglary tools, resisting arrest and possession...
VIDEO2:4902:49PayPal CEO says use of 'buy now, pay later' option soared nearly 400% on Black FridayMad Money with Jim Cramer PayPal CEO Dan Schulman told CNBC's Jim Cramer on Tuesday that use of the company's buy now, pay later option surged on Black Friday. In an interview on "Mad Money," Schulman said PayPal's installment payment service is "one of the stars, actually, of the holiday season for us." "During Black Friday, our volume on buy now, pay later was up almost 400% year over year. We did some 750,000 transactions alone in one day on Black Friday," Schulman said, referring to the day after Thanksgiving that's a key part of the holiday shopping season. The activity on Black Friday continues a trend PayPal observed throughout November, which is the first time the company recorded more than $1 billion of process volume through its buy now, pay later option in a single month, Schulman said. "We did over 1 million first-time users for the first time ever in a month," he added, putting its overall usage "well over 10 million consumers."...
A video posted the day after Black Friday shows shoppers storm into a store and a woman appearing to snatch a box from a small black child during a rush for discounted products. The Twitter account @Imposter_Edits posted the video on Saturday, of what appears to be Black Friday shoppers engaging in a melee in an unidentified store. The shoppers storm in through the front door, knocking over a stack of yellow boxes as they stampede. A white woman then walks up to the boy and grabs the box right out of his hands. The boy's mother begins to grapple with the woman. "Get off of me! Why are you being so offensive? A BLACK Friday thief has been mocked online for looking shocked in her police mugshot after being arrested for a shoplifting spree. Maria Smith, 39, stole clothing and perfume gift sets worth £363 just weeks after being released from jail. 2Maria Smith, 39, who went on a Black Friday shoplifting spree, has been mocked for looking shocked in her police mugshotCredit: SWNS 2She was jailed at York Magistrates Court for 16 weeksCredit: Glen Minikin She will spend Christmas behind bars after being jailed at York Magistrates Court. Smith, who said she lived on a caravan site in Hull, East Yorks., pleaded guilty to theft. But despite being caged before she still looked shocked on her bizarre mugshot, prompting online wags to mock her. Vicki Louise asked: "Why does she look so shocked?" Joseph Kennedy-Pinnock said: "Looks like she still caught by surprise." One wag quipped: "Not sure why she looks so surprised. She'd just come out of prison." Packages move along a conveyor at an Amazon fulfillment center on Cyber Monday in Robbinsville, New Jersey, U.S., on Monday, Nov. 29, 2021.Michael Nagle | Bloomberg | Getty Images Amazon said Tuesday it rang up record-breaking sales during the post-Thanksgiving rush, providing an upbeat outlook for a holiday shopping period that's been lackluster for the retail industry. In a blog post, Amazon said home goods, toys and apparel were among the top categories in the period from Black Friday to Cyber Monday. Popular purchases included Apple AirPods, Fire TV sticks and the Revlon One-Step Hair Dryer. Amazon didn't disclose sales figures for the two notable shopping days, which are typically its busiest in the holiday period. Analysts and investors will have to wait for Amazon's fourth-quarter results in late January or early February for a fuller picture of the shopping season. U.S. shoppers spent $10.7 billion on Cyber Monday, according to data from Adobe Analytics, marking a 1.4% decline from year-ago levels. Black Friday online sales also fell slightly short of last year's total, with retailers recording $8.9 billion...
The FBI conducted 187,585 National Instant Criminal Background System (NICS) checks on gun sales and transfers on Black Friday 2021 alone. The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) reports the Black Friday 2021 NICS checks surpassed those of 2020, which came in at 186,645. Moreover, NSSF noted that the FBI performed a total of 687,788 NICS checks during the entire week, including those on Black Friday. NSSF president Joe Bartozzi commented on the tremendous number of background checks conducted last week: This figure of over 687,000 background checks is truly remarkable. This year has already been shaping up to be the second strongest year for firearm sales on record, second only to 2020’s record-breaking number of 21 million background checks for a firearm sale. We anticipate, based on annual data, that firearm sales will rise during the final month of the year coinciding with hunting seasons and holiday sales. This figure, though, underscores the appetite for lawful firearm ownership in America and the resilience of the firearm and ammunition industry to meet that demand. Background checks have been relatively high during 2021, with the...

ICYMI, Black Friday has become more of a bona fide season than it is a single day. Whether you were still too lethargic from your turkey-day coma to scroll through the endless deals or simply are looking for extra savings to be found ahead of the holidays, these post-Black-Friday and Cyber Monday sales are basically just as good as last week's, so no FOMO is in order. by Brooke Rogers | CBS 11 DALLAS, Texas (CBSDFW.COM) – ‘Tis the season to spend, and shoppers are back in the stores this year. But experts say consumers actually kicked off the season well before Black Friday. READ MORE: 16 Units Damaged In 3-Alarm Apartment Fire In Fort WorthBlack Friday traffic in stores was down nearly 30% from 2019, according to Sensormatic Global Retail Consulting. Senior Director Brian Field said shoppers are more enthusiastic about shopping in stores than they were last year. He said while shoppers are still concerned about the pandemic, increases in online shopping and hybrid shopping, like curbside pickup, contribute to the data. He also said consumers started shopping earlier this year and opted not to wait for sales because of supply chain concerns. Black Friday failed to bring back the typical level of shopping it brought to stores prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, with both in-person and online shopping over the holiday on the decline in comparison to 2019. Retail stores in the United States saw a decrease of 28.3% in Black Friday shoppers compared to 2019, the last year before COVID-19 . Some have attributed the decrease in visits to supply chain issues and shoppers already completing most of their shopping, according to the research conducted by Sensormatic Solutions . SMALL BUSINESSES WILL HIT TURBULENCE THIS HOLIDAY SEASON “While in-store shopping is still not back to 2019 levels, more shoppers felt comfortable visiting stores in person this Black Friday than in 2020,” said Brian Field, senior director of global retail consulting at Sensormatic Solutions. "One driver of this increased traffic could be ongoing supply chain challenges and shipping delays, which are resulting in consumers shopping earlier to ensure their gifts arrive on time." Shopping in-person on Thanksgiving itself plummeted by 90.4% compared to 2019. The decrease was...
The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), the firearm industry trade association, revealed that the FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) processed 687,788 background checks during the week leading up to and including Black Friday. FBI’s NICS recorded 187,585 on Black Friday alone, ranking it among the Top 10 Highest Days for NICS checks and a .50 percent increase from Black Friday 2020 (186,645). The NICS checks are unadjusted, representing raw data from the FBI and are inclusive of all background checks related to firearms. NSSF has worked with firearm retailers to spread out special sales offers to customers throughout the week leading up to Black Friday so as not to overwhelm FBI NICS on Black Friday which can result in longer than normal wait times. “This figure of over 687,000 background checks is truly remarkable,” said Joe Bartozzi, NSSF President and CEO. “This year has already been shaping up to be the second strongest year for firearm sales on record, second only to 2020’s record-breaking number of 21 million background checks for a firearm sale. We anticipate, based...
Major cities across the United States fell victim to mass looting throughout Black Friday weekend as retailers fell victim to what liberal officials deemed "organized robbery." California was hit with "smash and grab" and "flash-mob–style" looting in Los Angeles County, according to a report . A group of 15- to 20-year-olds wearing ski masks allegedly broke into a Home Depot on Friday and seized mallets, crowbars, and sledgehammers. A top Amazon official said on Sunday that the online retail giant had a "record -breaking Black Friday" this year. While appearing on CBS's "Face the Nation," Dave Clark, CEO of Amazon Worldwide Consumer, was asked by host Margaret Brennan what he expected from the holiday shopping season this year, noting rising inflation. "Well, we're right in the middle of what we call 'Turkey 5,' which is between Thanksgiving and Cyber Monday, and we're off to a great start. We had a record-breaking Black Friday and we're seeing customers engaged," Clark said. According to Clark, consumers are spending money on clothing, holiday decor and toys for children. He also noted that there was a slight downturn in electronics purchases, saying people had already invested a great deal in their home offices due to the work-from-home conditions that were brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. Several localities across the United States have reported smash-and-grab robberies on Black Friday, contributing to a larger reported number of similar crimes in recent days. In California, the cities of Lakewood, Los Angeles and Monterey all experienced smash-and-grab robberies on the busy post-Thanksgiving shopping day.  The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department reported that on Friday evening eight people entered a Home Depot in Lakewood, which is a part of Los Angeles County, and went directly to the tool aisle. Officials said that roughly $400 worth of sledgehammers, hammers and crowbars were immediately taken from the store. The department noted that the robbers may have gotten inside of a damaged, red Mercedes Benz upon taking off. According to the Los Angeles Times, the Los Angeles Police Department also reported a string of robberies in the city Friday evening. Several of those crimes involved physical altercations with staff: At one store a worker was reportedly sprayed with a chemical agent, while at another multiple employees were said to have been pushed to the ground as the robbers fled. Meanwhile, in Monterey, $30,000 worth of sunglasses were taken by...
Retailers are on track to hit record sales this holiday season despite bargain hunters not finding the usual amount of Black Friday deals because of inflation and supply chain issues. Shoppers spent slightly less online during Black Friday this year, with many venturing back to physical stores despite coronavirus fears, tight supplies and retailers' efforts to encourage earlier holiday purchases.   For November and December, online sales are estimated to hit a record $207 billion, up 10 percent from last year, according to Adobe Digital Economy Index.  Meanwhile, the National Retail Federation has forecast combined brick-and-mortar, and online holiday sales to reach between $843.4 billion and $859 billion, an 8.5 percent to 10.5 percent spike from last year. 'Even though the holiday season should be okay from a sales standpoint - because retailers are discounting less - the margins won't necessarily be higher because of inflation,' said Forrester Research analyst Sucharita Kodali.   People shop at Macy's Herald Square store during Black Friday in New York. The U.S. Small Business Administration became a co-sponsor in 2011. President Joe Biden, like many Americans, got some of his Christmas shopping out of the way on Friday, picking up Pokeman cards for the grandkids and some kids books for Baby Beau. Biden spent more than an hour wandering around the cobblestone sidewalks of downtown Nantucket, popping into stores and stopping to talk with the locals. 'He was really nice. We had a conversation,' said one of the staff of Craftmasters of Nantucket, where Biden bought a leather passport holder to give as a Christmas gift. The store sells leather goods. 'He's a very fine gentleman.' At the Sunken Ship, Biden bought Pokeman cards for his grandkids, paying with $100 bill for the $19.99 pack, according to employees inside. Shoppers with bags from various stores stand next to each other as Black Friday sales begin at The Outlet Shoppes of the Bluegrass in Simpsonville, Kentucky, November 26, 2021.Jon Cherry | Reuters Traffic at retail stores on Black Friday dropped 28.3% compared with 2019 levels, as Americans shifted more of their spending online and kicked off their shopping earlier in the year, according to preliminary data from Sensormatic Solutions. Traffic was up 47.5% compared with year-ago levels, Sensormatic said. This time in 2020, many shoppers stayed at home due to fears around the coronavirus pandemic and as retailers operated on somewhat reduced hours. "It's clear shoppers are shopping earlier this season, just as they did last season," said Brian Field, senior director of global retail consulting at Sensormatic. He added that the two main reasons shoppers are spreading out their holiday purchases are ongoing concerns about Covid and worries about the supply chain. The peak time for Black Friday shopping in stores was 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., similar to trends in past years, Sensormatic said. Black Friday is still...
