ATLANTA (AP) — As Georgia Tech gathered Friday for its football practice of the season, the Yellow Jackets felt good about the future even with a tough schedule ahead. Sure, there will be away games against Clemson, Miami and Notre Dame plus a neutral-site game against North Carolina and a home contest against Georgia, but there’s so much room for improvement after a 3-7 season. The Jackets like that their top two players, quarterback Jeff Sims and running back Jahmyr Gibbs, are back and considered freshmen again. Plus, in addition to 25 freshmen just out of high school, 12 new Jackets have transferred from other programs. Add back seven senior and graduate players who have returned by taking advantage of a free year of eligibility offered by the NCAA for sake of COVID, and there is optimism. “A lot of people look at the schedule from the outside in and they kind of think, ‘Ooh! They’re going to have a tough time doing X, Y and Z,’” said defensive back Tre Swilling, who — entering his fifth season — is...
Former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows still believes there is hope for TrumpWorld to progress. On Friday, July 29, Meadows appeared on Newsmax where he offered some details about Trump's political future. He revealed the former president has conducted a number of meetings with "some of our cabinet members." Although Meadows admitted he had no authority to speak on Trump's behalf, he did insist no meetings would be held at all if Trump had no real plans to "move forward in a real way." Speaking to Newsmax host Steve Cortes, Meadows said, "We met with several of our cabinet members tonight. We actually had a follow-up ... meeting with some of our cabinet members. And as we were looking at that, we were looking at what does come next," Meadows said. He continued, "I'm not authorized to speak on behalf of the president, but I can tell you this, Steve; we wouldn't be meeting tonight if we weren't making plans to move forward in a real way, with President Trump at the head of that ticket." While it...
Charges being filed against former Cardinal Theodore McCarrick might encourage victims of sexual abuse to come forward, according to the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, also known as SNAP. McCarrick, the former archbishop of Washington, has been charged in Massachusetts with sexually assaulting a teenage boy there during a wedding reception in 1974. “We’ve known that he’s a serial predator. The church has known that; they removed him,” said Becky Ianni, SNAP’s leader for Washington D.C. and Virginia. “I’m very thankful to the secular authorities for finding a way to do this,” she said. McCarrick was defrocked after a Vatican investigation confirmed he had sexually molested adults as well as children. The 91-year-old former cardinal is now the highest-ranking Catholic official in the United States to face criminal charges for sexually abusing a minor. “I’m hoping that with this case that other survivors are going to see that the authorities found a way to charge him even though the statute of limitations had run out,” Ianni said. “That might encourage other survivors of McCarrick, or of anybody to...
