President Joe Biden is facing off with Vladimir Putin in a tense video call from the White House Situation Room on Tuesday morning, where he will warn his Russian counterpart there will be severe economic consequences if Moscow invades the Ukraine.   The call started at 10:07 am ET, according to the White House.  Tuesday's call is one of the biggest test of Biden's diplomatic skills to date as he tries to head off a Russian attack that could lead to additional US troops being deployed to Eastern Europe to support NATO allies against an aggressive threat from the Kremlin.  Putin, meanwhile, has complained that Ukraine poses a threat to Russia because of its relationship with the US and Western Europe.  The Russians released a photo of President Biden's secure video call with Vladimir Putin Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Tuesday that Moscow regretted what he called the White House's predictable tendency to resort to sanctions, but said that Putin was ready to hear out Biden's concerns and that the Kremlin leader wanted to set out his own. A US couple have been praised for 'an incredible gesture' after raising more than $2 million for juvenile diabetes with their extravagant Christmas light display. Joe and Jodi Mure, from Queens, New York, have been adding to their festive decorations for 26 years and now the display is so large it take 150 people to put it up. Joe, a criminal defence attorney, started the traditional in 1996 after he missed Christmas with his daughter Isabella. The family have added to it every year, with the decorations being put up the day after Halloween.  The family appeared on This Morning today to speak to hosts Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby from outside their winter wonderland - which has been dubbed 'The Little North Pole' as it's so large. The incredible garden includes 20ft toy solders, two ice rinks, mechanical dancers, and even a Santa's workshop. Now a huge event in their neighbourhood, the Mure family hold an opening night where they raise money for the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, with hundreds of people also donating online.     RELATED ARTICLES Previous 1 Next...

Much of the region has been socked in by thick morning fog for the past several days, but that’s about to give way to thicker clouds Monday afternoon into the evening. A system that’s now making its way down the coast is expected to bring light rain, arriving first in Ventura County and making its way into the rest of Southern California through the morning commute. Share this: ON THIS DAY IN 1890, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle reported, “Old Fort Putnam and the rounded top of Crow’s Nest looked down upon an unwonted spectacle at West Point yesterday afternoon, one which had never come to pass in the history of the military academy. It was a game of football between the West Pointers and a team from the naval academy in Annapolis. Never before had a visiting team played within the sacred precincts of West Point, and never before had the two schools tried conclusions against each other in the athletic arena. It was, therefore, a remarkable occasion, and one long to be remembered by the cadets themselves, and by the crowd of visitors who witnessed the contest. This first meeting of the embryonic army and navy had been widely heralded by the alumni of Annapolis, who were mainly instrumental in bringing about the innovation, and in consequence an extended interest in the contest was aroused.” *** ON THIS DAY IN 1903, the Eagle reported, “A fire that completely destroyed Brooklyn’s most historic theater, the Academy...

The best place to view the eclipse will be North America, where almost all of the 3.5 hours will be visible, as it will be nighttime when the eclipse begins.  'This is an exceptionally deep partial eclipse,' EarthSky explained, leaving just a thin sliver of the moon exposed to direct sun light at the point of maximum eclipse.  The rest of the moon will take on a reddish, rust colour, typical of a total lunar eclipse and caused by light waves from the sun being filtered by Earth's atmosphere.  According to the Royal Observatory, Greenwich, the partial eclipse will be 'barely visible in the UK' as it occurs when the moon is close to or below the horizon.  The longest partial lunar eclipse of the century will take place on Friday morning, according...

IT can be disheartening to step on the scales during your weight loss journey and see the number has increased. The dreaded “sad step” might say you’ve put on 2lbs overnight despite your best efforts. 1The bathroom scales might lie to youCredit: Alamy But before you throw in the towel on your weight loss plan, it’s important to know there are several reasons why your weight may fluctuate from one day to the next. And putting on weight is not necessarily the true cause. Jonathon Taylor, a senior personal trainer at Ultimate Performance, previously told The Sun that while weight changes are good to keep an eye on, you need to interpret them carefully. "When the scale moves up or down, it only tells you how much you have lost or gained, not WHAT you have lost or gained," he said. "Your bodyweight can fluctuate daily due to several factors that are completely unrelated to how much body fat or muscle mass you have. "For example, how much you sweat, your food and drink choices, the time you weigh in...

American Airlines continued its Halloween horror of a weekend by cancelling more than 200 flights early Monday morning, following more than 1,700 cancellations since Friday as experts warn of looming chaos ahead of the holiday season. The airline has blamed weather control issues, such as strong winds that battered its Dallas hub earlier this weekend, and ongoing staff shortages due to lay-offs made when travel cratered at the start of the COVID outbreak. In total, nearly 2,000 flights have been axed by the airline since Friday with up to 1,000 delays and 500 cancellations potentially looming, according to FlightAware. On Sunday alone, more than 850 flights were cancelled, more than 16 percent of that day's fleet total, while 365 trips were delayed.  Prior to that, 543 flights were cancelled on Saturday while 400 were delayed, and on Friday, 343 cancellations happened. 'With additional weather throughout the system, our staffing begins to run tight as crew members end up out of their regular flight sequences,' American Airlines said in a statement to CNN.  Despite continuing issues throughout the weekend, an spokesman...
Scouting Report: This electric tea kettle deserves a place in your heart and on your counter I’ve always been a tea person. I hate the taste of coffee but I love the morning beverage ritual, brewing a hot cup (or pot) of fragrant tea to wake you up and get you out of bed. I average 4-5 cups of black or green throughout the morning, plus a few cups of herbal in the afternoon and evening (so I pretty much live in my bathroom) but I have a small stove and don't want to clutter it up with a stovetop tea kettle. I’ve tried countless tea kettles – both stovetop and electric; glass, plastic, and metal – and so far, the OXO Electric Tea Kettle is, by far, my favorite. At the end of the day, every tea kettle boils water, but what’s special about this tea kettle is that it boils water extra fast (faster than a microwave) and it’s cord-free when removed from its 360 degree swivel base. It also has an insulated bottom so you can transfer...

Vicente Gonzalez (D) The Daily Kos Elections Morning Digest is compiled by David Nir, Jeff Singer, Stephen Wolf, Matt Booker, and Carolyn Fiddler, with additional contributions from David Jarman, Steve Singiser, Daniel Donner, James Lambert, David Beard, and Arjun Jaikumar. Leading Off ● TX-34, TX-15: Rep. Vicente Gonzalez, who currently represents Texas' 15th Congressional District, says he might seek re-election in the 34th District, where Rep. Filemon Vela, a fellow Democrat, is retiring. In comments to Politico, Gonzalez said that "a large portion of my constituency" would move from the 15th to the 34th under a new map proposed by Republicans, but the word "large" is doing a lot of work there: According to calculations from Daily Kos Elections, 23% of the population of the new 34th would come from the old 15th, while the rest—77%— would come from the old 34th. Kate Brown swiftly signed them into law, making the state the first to enact new House districts following the 2020 census. That final plan differs from a map the state Senate had approved a week earlier, and while it still reflects Democratic priorities, it's a modest gerrymander. To help understand its impact, we’ve calculated the results of the 2020 presidential election according to the new districts. You can also find the new numbers side-by-side with the figures for the old districts in this spreadsheet. Two districts, the 1st and 3rd in Portland, would stay safely blue: The former would have gone for Joe Biden 68-29 and the latter 73-25; under the old lines,...
