Jim Harbaugh has had to deal with so many expectations since becoming head coach at Michigan, and his reaction to clinching a playoff berth is pure joy.  No coach in college football has gone through as much criticism over his tenure as a head coach as Jim Harbaugh at Michigan. After Saturday’s 42-3 Big Ten Championship victory and clinching a berth in the college football playoffs, the head coach was filled with pure delight. When the Wolverines scored late to seal what was already a near-certain win and all that entailed, Harbaugh couldn’t contain his elation. Jim Harbaugh is absolutely loving it 〽️@UMichFootball pic.twitter.com/V2ancHpE73 — FOX College Football (@CFBONFOX) December 5, 2021 How can he not be? For years, Harbaugh was the center of jokes, and questions grew loud this season about whether or not he could win the big game. Safe to say, those questions have been answered. But before they find out the details of their College Football Playoff fate and more, he obviously needed a Gatorade shower (which he, of course, loved as well). A much...

When did the Iowa Hawkeyes last win the Big Ten? It’s been well over a decade since Kirk Ferentz led Iowa to claim a conference title. The Iowa Hawkeyes are in prime position to go out and win the Big Ten for the first time in well over a decade. It’s been years since Kirk Ferentz and the Hawkeyes have even remotely been in a position to claim the conference championship (the last run which came up short happened in 2015), but it’s been considerably longer since they’ve actually won the Big Ten. The 2015 Big Ten Conference Championship Game that the Hawkeyes lost against Michigan State is the closest Iowa has come to winning the Big Ten since 2004, a year in which the Hawkeyes technically claimed a share of the conference title. When is the last time Iowa football won the Big Ten?The Hawkeyes started the 2004 season off with wins over Kent State and Iowa State but was blown out 44-7 by the Arizona State Sun Devils in Iowa’s third game of the season. Iowa followed that up...
It turns out the College Football Playoff committee does actually watch the teams it ranks on a weekly basis. Who knew? If you needed proof that the College Football Playoff selection committee actually does pay attention to what happens on the field, then here you go. As the college football world navigates what’s going on in the conference championship games, the selection committee got together to watch the games. In a video shared on Twitter by ESPN’s Heather Dinich, the members of this season’s selection committee were hanging out together watching the conference championship games, but they were watching with a really weird set up. Michigan football is seeking its first Big Ten title since 2004 when Jim Harbaugh’s Wolverines take on the Iowa Hawkeyes in the 2021 Big Ten Championship Game. Jim Harbaugh and the Michigan Wolverines have the perfect opportunity to propel themselves right into the College Football Playoff with their upcoming matchup against the Iowa Hawkeyes in the Big Ten Championship Game. The Wolverines haven’t had many opportunities to get into the Playoff discussion in recent years because of the way the Ohio State Buckeyes have been able to find success in the Big Ten. Similarly, the Buckeyes have prevented the Wolverines from being able to go out and compete for the Big Ten in recent years as well. It’s been nearly two decades since Michigan has been able to win its conference. The last time the Wolverines were able to win the Big Ten? 2004, when they shared the conference crown with Iowa.Last Big Ten title for Michigan football came in 2004The Wolverines and Hawkeyes had identical Big Ten records in 2004 with both teams managing to go 7-1 in conference...
Nick Saban’s Alabama football team generally doesn’t find itself as an underdog, but that was the case when the Crimson Tide met the Georgia Bulldogs in Atlanta. The Alabama football program is one of the best-run college football programs in the country. Alabama Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban has assembled a team that has the capability to be a perennial contender to make the College Football Playoff. So it’s not often that the Crimson Tide happens to be an underdog when it goes up against literally anybody. Saban’s teams tend to win far more often than they lose (and it seems like most of those wins are incredibly lopsided), so oddsmakers generally act as if believe that Alabama will beat its foes without much of an issue. Coming into the SEC Championship Game against the Georgia Bulldogs, the Crimson Tide had a record of being favored in 92 games. But Alabama wasn’t favored against Georgia this Saturday. And, as it turns out, the last time Alabama was an underdog was when the Crimson Tide faced off against the Bulldogs a...
The College Football Playoff is the new norm for determining a national champion and already talking expansion. But when did the CFP start? For years, college football fans argued a great deal about the BCS National Championship and, essentially, only two teams having the opportunity to compete for a title. It was a fine system that produced great champions but the argument was always that there could be a better way. That brought about the institution of the College Football Playoff, which allows four teams to make it into the biggest stage of the postseason to compete in a tournament for the title. Now, there is talk of expansion to as many as 12 teams. But when was that switch in format actually made to the current iteration of the College Football Playoff. When did the College Football Playoff start? The first year of the College Football Playoff came back in 2014. That year, Alabama, Oregon, Florida State and Ohio State made the playoff with the Buckeyes winning. In the years since Ohio State emerged in the inaugural playoff, the champions...
Oklahoma State was agonizingly close to winning the Big 12 and making it into the College Football Playoff but their final lunge fell short. College football seasons are defined by the finest of margins. It doesn’t get much finer than the gap between the ball and the pylon at the end of the Big 12 Championship Game. Baylor had built up an early lead but Oklahoma State came back late in the game with a chance to take the lead as the clock ticked under one minute. Facing a fourth-and-goal at the one-yard line, the Cowboys handed the ball off to Dezmon Jackson. The back bounced it outside and raced towards the pylon, but Jairon McVea was with him stride for stride. The safety made the tackle as Jackson stretched out and came just inches short.Oklahoma State missed the playoff by literally a few inches.BAYLOR STOPS OKLAHOMA STATE ON 4TH DOWN ???? pic.twitter.com/9JlKW4ZLrv — SportsCenter (@SportsCenter) December 4, 2021 GAME. The Georgia football team is three wins away from navigating a season to perfection. 15-0 is on the minds of many Georgia football fans, as conference championship week approaches. No matter what happens vs. the Alabama Crimson Tide in Atlanta, Georgia went 12-0 in the regular season and 8-0 in SEC play. The shutout of Georgia Tech in Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate guarantees the Dawgs a spot in the 2022 College Football Playoff. While they could drop Saturday’s game to Alabama and still win it all, when was the last time they went undefeated? The last time Georgia went undefeated, Buck Belue connected with Lindsay Scott on the greatest play in program history.Georgia football: When was the last time the Dawgs went undefeated?Of course, the last time Georgia went undefeated came in 1980. This was Herschel Walker’s first year in Athens. The Dawgs went 12-0 that season and 6-0 in SEC play. The Baylor Bears are Big 12 champions. Could they also find a way to sneak into the College Football Playoff? If things play out right, yes. Baylor looked like they would roll to the Big 12 title early against Oklahoma State. Instead, it came down to the wire as the Bears held on for dear life and the conference championship. The Cowboys were inches short of a touchdown with less than 30 seconds left in the game. The Baylor defense held with the game-saving tackle coming from Jairon McVea. Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is watching the Big 12 Championship, and the former Texas Tech product doesn’t like what he sees. Do either Baylor or Oklahoma State want to win the Big 12 Championship? We assume at the end of four quarters and perhaps a little more, a trophy will be rewarded to one of these teams, but perhaps we could skip it entirely and start Georgia vs Alabama early. Mahomes is a fan of high-scoring, Big 12 football ever since his playing days. The Tyler, Texas native went to Texas Tech from 2014-16, before being drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft. In Lubbock, he 11,252 yards with a touchdown-to-interception ratio of 93:29. He’ll forever be a Red Raiders legend. So, Mahomes has every right to talk some smack. He did so on Saturday afternoon. Are you wondering who this season’s College Football Playoff selection committee is? Meet the 13 members of the 2021-2022 CFP committee. Ever since the start of the College Football Playoff with the 2014 season, a group of individuals has acted as the ultimate decision-making body for college football’s postseason play. At the end of the day and towards the end of the season, the College Football Playoff selection committee makes the choices on which four teams will be able to contend for a national title by playing in the College Football Playoff. The selection committee changes periodically. The group that made the decisions back in 2014 isn’t the group that is acting out that same task nowadays. Despite playing semi-regularly over the years, it has not been since the 2007 season that the Georgia football team has beaten the Alabama football program. With Georgia football fans thinking about the College Football Playoff, Alabama football fans have to win on Saturday to have any shot of getting into the big dance. These two SEC titans will clash in Atlanta on Saturday afternoon. Georgia enters play undefeated at 12-0. Alabama has one loss on the year to Texas A&M, so the Crimson Tide have no wiggle room if they want to make the four-team field. They must beat the Dawgs at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta or else. However, it has been a minute since the Dawgs beat the Crimson Tide. The last time Georgia beat Alabama on the college football gridiron, Nick Saban was just getting started in Tuscaloosa.Georgia football: When was the last time the Dawgs beat Alabama? The last time Georgia beat Alabama was on Sept. 22, 2007. It was an overtime thriller in Tuscaloosa, as Matthew Stafford and the rest of Mark Richt’s team beat a rebuilding Saban squad,...
The Ohio State Buckeyes still have a very slim hope of making the College Football Playoff if chaos reigns in conference championship games. When Michigan beat Ohio State, the Buckeyes had their College Football Playoff hopes essentially dashed. The likelihood of Ohio State making it into the Top 4 teams with two losses and no Big Ten title was exceedingly low. The one thing college football likes to deliver is chaos. And, as they say, chaos is a ladder. Ohio State playoff chances are slim but still possibleThere are seven teams ahead of Ohio State in the CFP rankings and only four spots in the playoff. The Buckeyes need just about everything to go their way. First, they need Georgia to utterly demolish Alabama. It wouldn’t be enough for the Crimson Tide to lose in the SEC Championship Game because they could get in as a two-loss non-conference title winner over Ohio State. Next, Ryan Day and Ohio State need to be big fans of Michigan on Saturday. The Wolverines need to assert their dominance over Iowa and establish themselves...
The last time the Georgia football team won the SEC Championship, the Dawgs made it to the College Football Playoff. While Georgia football fans are so beyond tired having to hear rival fanbases bring up 1980 at every turn, it was not that long ago when the Dawgs got it done in Atlanta. The undefeated Georgia Bulldogs will face the one-loss Alabama Crimson Tide in the 2021 SEC Championship game. While Georgia has almost certainly locked up a spot in the College Football Playoff, regardless of what happens on Saturday, a win over Alabama not only eliminates the Crimson Tide from the playoff conversation, but it guarantees the Dawgs of the No. 1 seed. Simply put, the only way the Dawgs get that No. 1 seed and head to the Orange Bowl is if they beat their perpetual nemesis Alabama in Atlanta.Georgia football: When was the last time the Dawgs won the SEC?Not since the infamous Blackout Game has Georgia defeated Alabama on the gridiron. The final 2021 College Football Playoff Rankings will be released on Dec. 5 with Cincinnati, Oklahoma State, Notre Dame and others awaiting their fate. The most important College Football Playoff rankings of 2021 are almost here. While the initial slate of rankings come on Tuesday evenings, that’s not the case for the final rankings. Championship weekend will help determine those all-important rankings. Georgia claimed the No. 1 spot followed by Michigan, Alabama and Cincinnati. Oklahoma State and Notre Dame were on the outside looking in. As an undefeated team about to play in the SEC Championship Game, there is a sense that Georgia will make the playoff even if they lose to Alabama. The rest need to win to get in. Michigan will take on Iowa in the Big Ten Championship Game while Cincinnati has to get by Houston in...
LAS VEGAS — The Pac-12 will announce its postseason award winners and the all-conference team on Tuesday, following voting that will take place over the weekend. Our selections will be published in this space on Monday. But before we offer a list of 40-something names, here’s a more select group: The Hotline’s picks for the 10 best players in the Pac-12 this season, regardless of position, statistics, team success, draft stock, games played, etc. The best of the best, in our opinion. 1. Utah linebacker Devin Lloyd: Fitting that he made the biggest play in the championship game (a Pick Six that gave Utah a 14-0 lead) because Lloyd made big plays — small ones, too — throughout the season. Always around the ball. Always a physical presence. Played the position as well as anyone has played it in years in this conference. 2. USC receiver Drake London: Was the best player in the Pac-12, and perhaps the country, while healthy. But he missed the final four games and has been downgraded on our list as a result — all...

LAS VEGAS — Pac-12 commissioner George Kliavkoff lauded the coaching moves made recently by several schools as the carousel spins at a dizzying rate. “The news from the last week was terrific,” he said prior to the conference championship at Allegiant Stadium, “and it wasn’t just the news from USC, although that was fantastic.” The Trojans made the marquee hire, luring Lincoln Riley, a three-time playoff participant, away from Oklahoma. But Washington picked Kalen DeBoer from Fresno State, Oregon State locked up Jonathan Smith with a contract extension, and Washington State promoted interim Jake Dickert to the permanent job. In addition, Arizona State confirmed that Herm Edwards will return next season, and UCLA seemingly moved closer to retaining Chip Kelly. But the carousel hasn’t stopped spinning. Reports surfaced Friday that Miami is targeting Oregon coach Mario Cristobal, who played for the Hurricanes and is from Miami. Sources believe the Hurricanes are preparing an offer for Cristobal that could double his current salary of $4.3 million (approximately). And if Cristobal stays in Eugene, he would assuredly receive a huge contract extension,...
LAS VEGAS — The head of Pac-12 football operations on Friday offered a largely positive assessment of the conference’s officiating performance in 2021. “We have work to do, but this is not the same unit it was a few years ago,” said Merton Hanks, who is completing his second season as the senior associate commissioner for football operations. “We are not the same.” Hanks has not taken a deep dive into the officiating analytics — that process will unfold over the winter — but he offered two data points and several opinions on the state of officiating prior to the Pac-12 championship game at Allegiant Stadium. Hanks joined the conference in Sept. 2020 and spent the bulk of his first fall navigating the COVID disruptions. But this season unfolded smoothly, with no games affected by wildfire smoke and only one (Cal-USC) impacted by COVID. That allowed Hanks and his deputy, associate commissioner for football operations Shonna Brown, to focus on the traditional responsibilities, with officiating a key component. Although there were numerous instances of questionable calls and irate coaches, Pac-12...

The Utah football program has been in the Pac-12 for more than 10 years now. Have they ever taken home the Pac-12 Championship Game? For the third time since they joined the Pac-12, the Utah Utes are playing for the conference crown in 2021. Kyle Whittingham’s program adapted to life in the Power 5 relatively quickly but they have yet to break through for the top prize. Has Utah ever won the Pac-12 title? No, the Utes have lost both conference title games they have played in. They first won a share of the Pac-12 South title in 2015. However, USC had the tiebreaker and went on to lose to Christian McCaffrey and Stanford. Utah’s first-ever appearance in 2018 ended in disappointment as Washington won a low-scoring battle, 10-3. Neither offense found the endzone but disaster struck for the Utes when Byron Murphy intercepted Jason Shelley and returned the pick for a touchdown in the third quarter. That was the difference in the game. Utah scored their first Pac-12 Championship Game touchdown in 2019 against Oregon but that was only after...
Georgia football head coach Kirby Smart may have just called out new USC head coach Lincoln Riley for ducking the SEC. With the biggest game of the season ahead of them on Saturday, Georgia head coach Kirby Smart may have taken a not-so-subtle shot at former Oklahoma and new USC head coach Lincoln Riley. There has been some debate as to if Riley ducked the SEC. His former employer is slated to join the SEC in a few years to make it a 16-team league, along with arch rival Texas. Riley had elite job security in Norman and would have made the transition to the new league had he stayed put. Though the opportunity to rebuild at a place like USC is appealing, here is what Smart had to say. “The amount of pressure that’s put on coaching staffs to win now is immense,” said Smart ahead of the 2021 SEC Championship game vs. Alabama on Saturday. “I think you have to understand when you get into this business, the nature of this business and the high stakes that are involved...

Oklahoma football will be coached by Bob Stoops in their bowl game after Lincoln Riley’s exit but the question of pay made Stoops even more of a legend. Things got pretty ugly quick for Oklahoma football with Lincoln Riley leaving abruptly after the loss in Bedlam. Quick to step in, though, was Sooners head coaching legend Bob Stoops, who will serve as the interim head coach for the program in their bowl game to finish off the season. As if that wasn’t an already legendary move enough from Stoops to step away from his FOX broadcasting duties to coach the program that he handed Riley the keys to, it gets even more so with details of his pay being revealed. Of course, the Sooners wouldn’t listen and are still going to pay him. Joe Harroz: Bob Stoops “twice refused” to be paid for his services...

Cincinnati Bearcat quarterback Desmond Ridder wants to help college students through Dr. Pepper. He also hopes to right a college football wrong. Cincinnati Bearcat quarterback Desmond Ritter did not expect to be one win away from a chance to play in the College Football Playoff when he decided to come back for his senior season. “That was something we never really talked about as a program,” Ridder told FanSided. “Our main focus being from a group of five smaller school program is winning conference championships.” That is not to say that Ridder didn’t believe the Bearcats belonged in the playoff or could compete, but more a reflection on the selection process that had snubbed worthy candidates. One that he knew especially well. “There have been a lot of teams in our conference, even us last year, UCF in 2018 and 2017, that had a good shot at it and they did not give them the respect they deserved,” Ridder said. “We are excited to get out there and not only perform for us but for every smaller school in the...

The penultimate CFP rankings were released on Tuesday night and we’re dissecting the new Top 25 to see where the committee was right and wrong. Nothing about this season or any iteration of the CFP rankings has been ho-hum this season. Every week, we’ve seen big shake-ups in the College Football Playoff picture and this past week was no exception, though that could’ve been expected during rivalry week. With Michigan upending Ohio State, previously ranked No. 2, and Oklahoma State picking up a monster win over Oklahoma in Bedlam, we knew that things were going to get moved around in the committee’s latest iteration of the Top 25. The big question was how things would be moving. We got our answer on Tuesday night with the new Top 25 CFP ranking, the next-to-last of the season heading into the conference championships. Let’s take a look at the rankings before breaking down our thoughts on how the committee did.CFP rankings Week 12 release: College Football Playoff committee reveals penultimate Top 25Georgia Bulldogs Michigan Wolverines Alabama Crimson Tide Cincinnati Bearcats Oklahoma State...
Georgia is still the top team in America with the regular season in the books. The latest College Football Playoff rankings were released Tuesday night on ESPN, and the Bulldogs are still sitting in the top spot as we enter conference championship weekend. (RELATED: David Hookstead Is The True King In The North When It Comes To College Football) Michigan, Alabama and Cincinnati rounded out the top four. Oklahoma State and Notre Dame are in the fifth and sixth spots respectively.   View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Georgia Football (@georgiafootball) As I’ve said for the past several weeks, I have nothing against Georgia being in the top spot. They’re undefeated, won the SEC East and will play Alabama for the SEC title. They have every right in the world to be ranked number one and it’s not a surprise among fans that they’re still holding onto that spot.   View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Georgia Football (@georgiafootball) As for Michigan rising up to the second spot, I’d say they’ve earned it after the...
Michigan State football coach Mel Tucker earned a huge honor Tuesday. The head coach of the Spartans was named the Big Ten Coach of the Year after leading MSU to a regular season record of 10-2. There’s no doubt about that at all. He took a struggling MSU program and got them to ten regular season wins in his second season as the head coach of the Spartans.   View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Michigan State Football (@msu_football) If that’s not impressive, I don’t know what is. Again, not sure he’s worth $95 million over the next decade, but MSU clearly thinks he is. What I do know is that the better MSU is...

As Washington Football Team owner Daniel Snyder casually scopes out sites for a new stadium, he might want to think about addressing the repeated leaks from his current one. And not just the leaks that led to Jon Gruden’s ousting from the Las Vegas Raiders, but literal leaks that have fans repeatedly asking if sewage water is being dumped on them while watching a game. During the Washington Football Team’s Monday night matchup with the Seattle Seahawks, fans at FedEx Field scrambled as water poured down on them. If this story sounds familiar that’s because it is, the WFT crowd was rained on by an unknown substance for the second time this season. In September, the crowd panicked as they believed a burst sewage pipe was dumping poop water on them. Monday night, similar panic set in as another water disaster filled a FedEx Field luxury suite. Tuesday is the eight-year anniversary of one of the greatest moments in college football history. On November 30, 2013, Auburn and Alabama played in the Iron Bowl and the closing seconds were cemented in history forever. (RELATED: David Hookstead Is The True King In The North When It Comes To College Football) With one second on the clock, the Crimson Tide attempted a deep field goal to win the game. Instead of securing a victory, the ball fell short and right into the hands of Chris Davis. The rest is history. Davis took it to the house and won the game in unreal fashion. Army’s uniforms for the Navy game are absolutely incredible. ESPN analyst and former Steelers safety Ryan Clark spoke at length about how the 5-5-1 Pittsburgh Steelers lack physicality in a disappointing season. “They’re not my beloved Steelers anymore.” That’s how Ryan Clark began a two-minute ESPN segment on how the Steelers have transformed over the course of a season. Clark, who was drafted by the New York Giants in 2002, spent the majority of his NFL career in yellow and black. During his stint there from 2006 to 2013, Clark became a Super Bowl Champion and a 2011 Pro Bowler. He played alongside Troy Polumalu in a dangerous safety tandem that instilled fear across the league. Today, Clark is disappointed in his former team as he watched them come undone in a 41-10 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals. “Nobody is scared to play this team,” Clark said. “There’s absolutely no physicality. There’s no energy defensively. There’s no tone-setters.” Clark mentioned Minkah Fitzpatrick, whom he considers “one of the best play-making free safeties in football”, dubbing him “a fifth linebacker” because the Steelers linebackers refuses to tackle runners.Former Steelers safety...
EAST HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — UConn athletic director David Benedict spent almost a week in Idaho visiting with Jim Mora and talking football and life, before deciding that he’d found the right man to become the Huskies’ head coach. While many things about the former UCLA and NFL coach impressed Benedict, what may have sealed the deal is a “really huge book” Mora showed him, in which the 60-year-old had chronicled every mistake he believes he’s made on the sideline and written down what he should have done instead. “I was worried it was going to take us a couple of days just to get through ’em,” Benedict joked. “To me that says a lot about a person that they are willing to learn from those mistakes, they are willing to own those mistakes.” Mora insists the book isn’t that big, and he notes he also journals about successes and good ideas. He said the UConn job, which he officially started on Sunday, will give him the ability to put everything he’s learned into one more football challenge. He also...
(CNN)The world's best footballers will be recognized at the annual Ballon d'Or ceremony in Paris on Monday.Lionel Messi, Robert Lewandowski and Mohamed Salah are among the favorites to be crowned the best men's player, while Barcelona's Alexia Putellas and Jennifer Hermoso headline the women's nominees. However, the scheduling of the awards in the middle of a women's international break has drawn criticism, a decision that makes it hard for some of the nominees to attend. For instance, Australia and Chelsea star Sam Kerr, who is in the running to be crowned the best player in the women's game, is set to be a notable absentee from the ceremony with the Matildas facing the US in Newcastle on Tuesday."Incredibly disappointing that the highest award for the best female players in the world is not even accessible for them to attend -- these things need to keep being highlighted as not acceptable," Rehanne Skinner, head coach of Tottenham Hotspur Women, said on Twitter. A female Italian TV reporter was slapped on the rear live on air by a football fan in the aftermath of a game played this weekend to raise awareness of violence against women.  Greta Beccaglia, a journalist with Italy's Toscana TV, was reporting live from outside the Carlo Castellani stadium in Empoli where Fiorentina lost 2-1 to the hosts in a Serie A clash.  Beccaglia was speaking to despondent Fiorentina fans following the game when two men approached her from behind. One of the men appeared to spit in his hand, before slapping the journalist on the rear live on air.  A visibly disgusted Beccaglia turned on the men, wagging her finger before telling them: 'Sorry, you can't do this, I'm sorry.'  But the men quickly made their exit before another fan jumped into shot and swore at the camera.  The incident came in the immediate aftermath of the game in which players wore a red mark on their cheeks during the game in support of the 'give violence against women the red card' campaign, on the same week of the...
