Jill Biden on Monday unveiled a holiday theme close to the heart, tying together her love of learning with the challenges the country faced during the coronavirus pandemic and paying tribute to the former families that lived in the White House. 'Gifts from the Heart' will be the theme for the 2021 White House Holiday Season, the first lady revealed.  Inspiration for the theme came from the 'small acts of kindness and experiences that lifted our spirits this year and throughout the pandemic,' the East Wing said in a statement. Over 100 volunteers decorated the state rooms of the White House over the past week with adornments tied to the theme, including stacks of books, floating candles, and Christmas Tree decorations featuring photographs of previous first families.  Decorating the 55,000 square foot White House involved 41 Christmas Trees, 6,000 feet of ribbon, more than 300 candles and over 10,000 ornaments.  Even the famous Gingerbread White House - which is on display in the State Dining Room - was inspired by the 'gratitude and admiration for our Nation's frontline workers who kept our country...

SustainAble Home Goods sells a selection of eco-conscious products online and also offers cloth wrapping that can be reused.Source: SustainAble Home Goods Some children might be waking up on Christmas morning to find more homemade gifts and a lot less wrapping paper under the tree. One in three shoppers said they plan to ditch traditional wrapping paper for environmental reasons this holiday season, according to an Accenture survey, which asked 1,515 U.S. consumers in August about their holiday shopping plans. Almost a quarter of consumers, meantime, are planning to buy materials or ingredients to give their own homemade gifts this year, Accenture found. And 37% of people say they're likely going to be shopping in secondhand channels such as thrift stores this holiday season — for others and for themselves. That metric ticked up to 50% for shoppers under the age of 40. "It's a sustainable holiday," said Jill Standish, lead of Accenture's global retail practice. "And people are more aware than ever." After spending so much time at home since March 2020, many households are in a "different frame...

He sources locally and can quickly navigate supply headaches plaguing other retailers.Larry Falk | CNBCThis holiday season, Darin Mays isn't staring down labor challenges or supply chain woes like some of his big-box competitors, and sales are strong. The entrepreneur's Minneapolis-based business, Urban Wing, makes wood pole tables that can be used around patio heaters, umbrellas and basement poles. He sells the tables, along with sauna products, online and through Etsy's platform.  Mays decided to pursue his dream of owning his own business after leaving a career in health-care technology last year. His wife is his only employee.  "I source most of the product locally, which gives me an edge," Mays said. "But also as an inventor, I can design and manipulate products on the fly, so it's relatively easy to pivot." Having product available to sell has been an advantage. This month, sales are up some 900% compared with the same time last year, Mays said. He said he's sold more than 500 of his tables...

WHEAT RIDGE, Colo. (CBS4) – A woman’s quest to send tens of thousands of holiday cards to troops overseas is hitting one last hurdle this holiday season. Marlys Halbeisen has written 25,000 cards herself over the past year, but her source for funding the postage dried up. “I just sit down with boxes of cards and a pen and turn on the TV and watch the Hallmark channel and write cards,” Halbeisen said. “I hope people will help me out.” (credit: CBS) On Wednesday, Halbeisen and a few friends loaded up 75 boxes full of letters and shipped them off to a nonprofit in Washington D.C. that then distributes the cards to military bases around the world. Some other volunteers wrote cards bringing this year’s total to about 38,000. “I love every single card I write,” Halbeisen said. “Just think, 38,000 smiles in these boxes.” She was hoping a source of money from last holiday season would pick up the bill for postage again. “Time came and I went to turn in the bill, and they said, ‘Oh no. New York (CNN)The Elf on the Shelf — a popular elf doll that parents place around their home in the runup to Christmas to "monitor" if the kids are being naughty or nice — has been showing up in many American households in the days after Thanksgiving for more than 15 years now. But this year the elves' journeys to stores and homes has been more complicated. All kinds of businesses across the globe have been scrambling to try to manage a stalled supply chain that's created a serious backlog of inventory at major ports and a shortage of workers to deliver it. But the problem feels particularly harrowing for companies that make a highly seasonal product with a tight sales window, like The Elf on the Shelf. The Lumistella Company, the business behind the The Elf on the Shelf storybook and doll brand, makes the elves in China, then -— ideally, at least — gets them to the warehouses for retailers like Walmart, (WMT) Target (TGT) and Amazon (AMZN) weeks in advance of Thanksgiving. Since the product loses its...
Most Americans have only a sketchy concept (if any) of the British holiday Guy Fawkes Night. There are fireworks (or maybe just fires?), and kids run in the streets hitting up people for money. And then there’s that ubiquitous mask. A few questions answered: What’s it all about? It commemorates the 1605 Gunpowder Plot, in which a group of Catholic radicals planned to blow up Parliament — with King James I in it — so they could install Catholic leadership. So the holiday celebrates treason? It celebrates the failure of the treason. The barrels of gunpower were discovered under the House of Lords on Nov. 4, the evening before the planned ignition, and the conspirators were arrested and executed. When word got out of the plot’s failure, supporters of the king lighted bonfires to celebrate his survival. There’s a poem associated with the holiday that begins: Remember, remember the Fifth of November, The Gunpowder Treason and Plot. I know of no reason Why the Gunpowder Treason Should ever be forgot. And Guy Fawkes? One of the conspirators — specifically, the...
