Former President Donald Trump is drawing a great deal of criticism following reports that he made unmasked public appearances and debated now-President Joe Biden in late September 2020 despite having tested positive for COVID-19. But liberal Washington Post opinion writer Greg Sargent goes a step further this week in his column, arguing that these reports are not only damning of Donald Trump, but also, of family members like his son Donald Trump Jr. and former First Lady Melania Trump. “The Trump family has long treated rules and laws as nuisances that are only for the little people, and the news that Donald Trump tested positive for COVID-19 before the first 2020 presidential debate shows that this tendency may be even more depraved and malevolent than you thought,” Sargent writes. “It turns out that this revelation, which comes in a new book by former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, also implicates members of Trump’s family, including Melania Trump and Donald Trump Jr.” On October 2, 2020, Trump announced that he had tested positive for...

A statement from the team’s high performance director, Gillian Bower, emailed by Harrod to The Associated Press, said the athlete is asymptomatic and in contact with the squad’s sports medicine director and internist. Waldner said the U.S. racer was on a charter flight carrying athletes from various countries to Colorado from the previous stop on the men’s World Cup tour in Lake Louise, Alberta. Waldner indicated there was concern about whether the World Cup events scheduled this week could be held, but said he received the “green light” to go ahead as...

A Miss Universe contestant has tested positive for COVID-19 upon arriving in Israel, after the country decided to go ahead and host the beauty pageant despite barring entries to foreigners in a bid to fight the omicron variant. Miss Universe organizers did not identify the contestant or whether she had contracted the omicron variant, but said that she was fully vaccinated and had tested negative before departing for Israel. She was taken to a quarantine hotel provided by the government while people who came into contact with her have been asked to self-isolate. Portuguese health authorities announced Monday they have identified 13 cases of Omicron, a new variant of Covid feared for its ease of transmission. Each case is tied to the professional soccer club Belenenses after one player traveled to South Africa. Saturday, Belenenses entered their Primeira Liga match against Benfica with 17 reported cases of Covid among their players and staff. After they were declined the ability to postpone the match, the game was ultimately abandoned shortly after halftime, when Belenenses was unable to dress the minimum of seven players. “In the middle of the afternoon we communicated to the Liga that we didn’t want to play the game,” club president Rui Pedro Soares told reporters Saturday. “We had eight players who could attend the game and as such, they told us that if we didn’t attend the game it would be unjustified absence. “Playing here today was a shame for all of us.” At the time of the match on Saturday, it was unclear if any of the 17 reported Covid cases from Belenenses involved the Omicron variant. Dutch authorities said Saturday they believe omicron cases are among 61 passengers on two flights from South Africa who tested positive for COVID-19 Friday. The passengers who tested positive are being isolated as authorities conduct further investigation into the cases, some of which they say are likely the highly transmissible new variant that originated in South Africa. More than 500 other passengers on the flights from Cape Town and Johannesburg into Amsterdam have tested negative and were allowed to return home or continue traveling. Those who returned home in the Netherlands were instructed to self-isolate for five days in case of an incubation period. PARIS (AP) — The prime minister of France, who tested positive for COVID-19 Monday, is being singled out on social media and beyond as the prime example of what not to do in the pandemic. Multiple videos are being circulated widely of a maskless Jean Castex vigorously shaking hands with elected officials in an enclosed space at a Paris mayoral congress on Nov. 16. Angry users are pointing out that that goes against the official line that everyone should continue taking preventative measures. They also noted that Castex had called French territory Guadeloupe “irresponsible” in the enforcement of COVID measures when he cannot abide by the rules himself. Gabriel Attal, the French government’s spokesman, had leaped to Castex’s defense at the time the video first began circulating. “We are all only human,” he said. But the Castex’s positive test is a potential embarrassment for the French government and President Emmanuel Macron ahead of April’s presidential election. COSTA MESA, Calif. (AP) — Los Angeles Chargers defensive tackle Linval Joseph entered the league’s COVID-19 protocol on Monday following a positive test. He is the fifth Chargers defensive player over the past two weeks that has either tested positive or had to go on the reserve/COVID-19 list as a close contact. Joseph missed Sunday’s 41-37 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers because of a shoulder injury and will be out for this week’s game at Denver because he is unvaccinated. Linebackers Drue Tranquill, who first went on the list on Nov. 11, and Joey Bosa were activated before the Pittsburgh game. Bosa was an unvaccinated close contact and tested negative five straight days. “I’ve been taking care of myself and been taking precautions to not get it,” Bosa said. “I’m not too worried about it. PARIS (AP) — France’s prime minister tested positive for COVID-19 on Monday, hours after returning from a visit to neighboring Belgium and just as France is seeing a nationwide resurgence of infections, according to his office. French Prime Minister Jean Castex will adapt his schedule for the coming 10 days to continue his activities in isolation, his office said. Officials at the prime minister’s headquarters did not comment on whether Castex has any virus symptoms. One of Castex’s daughters tested positive Monday after her father returned from a meeting with Belgian Prime Minister Alexander de Croo in Brussels, and Castex himself then took two tests that were both positive, his office said. De Croo’s office said he will be tested Tuesday and will self-isolate while awaiting the result, according to Belgian state broadcaster RTBF. The second Pittsburgh Steelers' player has tested positive for COVID-19 in the last three days, according to an ESPN report. Minkah Annane Fitzpatrick Jr., 25, of New Jersey, tested positive for COVID-19 on Monday, the outlet reports citing an unnamed source. Fitzpatrick was scheduled to speak at a press conference Monday at noon but had to cancel due to the test result, according to ESPN. If Fitzpatrick does not test positive in time to play in Saturday's game against the Los Angeles Charges, Tre Norwood would most likely play in his place, according to DKPittsburghSports. Fitzpatrick is in his third season with the Steelers after leaving the Miami Dolphins, DKPittsburghSports reports. He is the second player to test positive over the last three days, the first being quarterback, Ben Roethlisberger, 39, of Ohio, who tested positive on Saturday, missing the game against the Lions on Sunday, as ESPN reported. Both men are required to be symptom free and have two negative tests before they are able to rejoin the team; until then, they remain on the...

A PET Dalmatian was the first UK dog to test positive for Covid, say experts. Kip was in agony with breathing problems after apparently catching the virus from his owners’ family. 1Defra announced a dog had tested positive for Covid earlier this month in a first official government test Gareth Ayles-Owen and wife Alison took him to the Ralph Veterinary Referral Centre in Marlow, Bucks, for checks. Further analysis at Montpellier University in France — one of the only labs in the world testing pets last December — confirmed the Kent variant. Dr Luca Ferasin, at the Ralph centre, wrote: “To our knowledge this is the first report of infection in dogs.” Last week, Defra announced a dog had tested positive for Covid earlier this month in a first official government test. But an insider said nine-year-old Kip’s result was thought to be the first identified by a private organisation. Marketing consultant Alison, a mum of three from South West London, said: “The family had Covid in October 2020 and we think that is how Kip got infected. ...
Everyone has an opinion on Aaron Rodgers and his stance on the COVID vaccine. That now includes the White House weighing in on him spreading misinformation. Jen Psaki returned to her role as the White House press secretary on Friday after missing time due to testing positive for COVID-19. In her first press conference, she was asked about Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers who has come under fire for his comments regarding the COVID vaccine. “You know how we feel about misinformation. We’re against it,” she said via USA Today when asked if she had anything to say to celebrities like NFL star Aaron Rodgers who have promoted dubious alternatives to vaccines. Rodgers tested positive for COVID-19 last week and missed the team’s game vs. the Kansas City Chiefs as a result. Rodgers said he was immunized but was not vaccinated, which caused an uproar for what many felt was him lying, or being misleading, about his status. He blamed a “woke culture” and even tried comparing himself to Martin Luther King Jr. for fighting against what he felt were...
White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki had a brief but pointed response to NFL star Aaron Rogers over his Covid controversy. On Friday afternoon, Ms. Psaki returned to the James Brady Press Briefing Room to brief reporters for the first time since testing positive for the coronavirus. She opened the briefing by talking a bit about her return and her illness. “First, let me say it’s great to be back with all of you, although as a longtime hater of heels, I do miss my slippers, so — which I’m sure some of the women in this room can agree with,” Psaki joked. “But just to reiterate, I had intended to go on the trip with the President about two weeks ago. I did not go on the trip because I had members of my household who had tested positive for COVID. So out of an abundance of caution, I stayed home. I received four negative tests, and then, on October 31st, I received a positive test,” Psaki said. “And I put out that information out of an abundance of transparency....
Eight big cats at the St. Louis Zoo are under close watch after the animals tested positive for COVID-19 on Friday, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported. The infected cats include two African lions, two snow leopards, an Amur tiger, a puma and two jaguars. The cats are expected to recover, as they had mild symptoms, although some had a cough and nasal discharge. None of the other 12,000 animals in the zoo have tested positive, the local newspaper reported. Staff have not traced the source of the infection among the cats. The zoo has been vaccinating its animals with an animal-specific vaccine for more than a month against the disease that has wreaked havoc on the global human population. The cats were vaccinated with a two-shot regimen during a three-week period starting Sept. 30, but were likely exposed between doses, staff told the Post-Dispatch. According to the local outlet, staff at the zoo are required to be vaccinated and to wear a mask indoors so as not to transmit the virus to animals.  In September, six big cats tested positive for the...
(CNN)White House press secretary Jen Psaki returned to the White House briefing room Friday for the first time since testing positive for Covid-19, telling reporters she completed a 10-day quarantine and received a negative Covid-19 test on Thursday."It's great to be back with all of you, although as a longtime hater of heels I do miss my slippers, which I'm sure some of the women in this room can agree with," Psaki told reporters at a White House briefing. Psaki, who is fully vaccinated against Covid-19, said she had intended to travel with President Joe Biden to Rome and Glasgow for his trip to Europe late last month, but stayed behind because members of her household had tested positive for Covid-19. After receiving four negative tests, she tested positive on October 31. "I had mild symptoms, primarily fatigue, and I remain incredibly grateful for the vaccine and the impact of the vaccine in keeping me safe and other people in my house safe as well," Psaki said.Psaki said she had not seen the President for five days prior to her...
White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki likes to “circle back.” On Friday, she did just that as she returned to the White House’s James S. Brady Press Briefing Room, just over a week after testing positive for the coronavirus. Psaki announced on Oct. 31 she tested positive for Covid. In her statement that day, she said that “in coordination with senior leadership at the White House,” she decided not to accompany President Joe Biden on his five-day trip to Europe that included going to the Vatican, where Biden, who is Catholic, met with Pope Francis; Rome for the G20; and in Scotland for a U.N. climate change conference. Psaki said that “members of her household [tested] positive for Covid-19” and that she had quarantined and tested negative over four days afterward only to get a positive test the day before her announcement. She noted that she hadn’t “had close contact with the president or senior members of the White House since [the previous] Wednesday.” Psaki reiterated on Friday that she made the announcement “out of an abundance of transparency” and...
