The Purdue Boilermakers brought out all the stops in their quest to upset No. 3 Michigan State, including a gorgeous trick play. There are few things better than watching a college football team pull off a reverse or a fleaflicker to perfection. How about a reverse fleaflicker throwback screen? That’s something extra special. Purdue unleashed that chimera of a play against Michigan State and it was beautiful. This Purdue trick play was a thing of beautyPURDUE BRINGS OUT THE TRICK PLAY FOR THE TD ???? pic.twitter.com/06rqhGVD0q — ESPN (@espn) November 6, 2021 Spartans fans may not want to admit it, but that might be one of the best trick plays of the year, if not the decade or the century. There was a fake handoff, a reverse, a toss back to the QB and then throw back to the receiver who originally faked the handoff. All it was missing was a hook-and-ladder element. Playing at home against a Top 5 opponent, the Boilermakers are playing with house money. It makes sense to try a trick play or two if...
Unfortunately for Michigan State football fans, the Spartans don’t have a Heisman winner to brag about (yet). The Heisman Trophy is the most prestigious award a college football player could possible receive. It’s the one that starts a seemingly endless amount of discussions and arguments and it’s one award that a Michigan State Spartans football player has yet to claim. That’s right, unfortunately for the Spartans, there is no Heisman Trophy history for them to celebrate. Michigan State has an above average football program historically. The Spartans have won more than 60 percent of their games all time, have played in 29 bowl games, have claimed 11 conference championships and stake a claim on five national titles (with the most recent being in 1966). This is a program that has made it to the College Football Playoffs, an accomplishment most others are unable to claim. But the Heisman has eluded the Spartans.Michigan State football: Has a Spartans player ever won the Heisman Trophy? All that said, just because a Michigan State player hasn’t won the Heisman Trophy in the past doesn’t...
Stevie Wonders discography, ranked The 8 Best Side Hustles for Gen Z Michigan and Michigan State clinch top spots as the undefeated teams prepare for an epic showdown in Week 9. The beauty of college football is that when you sit down for a Saturday that doesn’t have much walk-up appeal, things will end up happening that you’ve never seen before. Like a nine-overtime game in which only 38 points are scored. Like a quarterback stealing the ball from his own running back and carrying it for a key first down to keep an undefeated season going. Both those things happened in the noon window of games, sending what was supposed to be a mundane weekend off the rails. Illinois stunned Penn State 20–18 in the nine-OT fandango that showed the flaws of the utterly gimmicky new overtime rules and showcased the offensive futility of both teams. It was, technically, the longest game in the history of the sport and also one of the worst. Neither team was capable of mustering three yards for a score across five straight...

View the original article to see embedded media. It was unnaturally hot in East Lansing, Mich., Monday, with the thermometer topping out at a muggy 81 degrees. This was after a run of temperatures in the 70s in preceding days, allowing Michigan State students who spend months in layered clothing to maintain their summer attire a little longer while scootering around campus. Everyone knows that the cold is inevitably coming, so they’ll giddily ride this warm wave for now. That also is the corresponding mood surrounding Spartans football, which has a perfect record nobody saw coming. At 6–0 after a 2–5 COVID-19 mulligan season, Michigan State is the surprise team of college football. The Spartans are good and the Spartans are fun, two things that have rarely happened simultaneously at a program traditionally devoted to the flairless...
A military historian has claimed the famous Spartan warriors were not as fearsome as Gerard Butler made them appear in the movie 300 and said they usually lost battles. According to legend, King Leonidas I of Sparta led 300 warriors to fight hundreds of thousands of Persian invaders under Great King Xerxes in the Battle of Thermopylae in 480 BC. Although the Persians won the battle with just one Spartan surviving, Thermopylae boosted moral and helped the Greeks drive the Persians away the next year. Their courage and self-sacrifice saw Thermopylae become one of the bloodiest and most influential battles of the ancient world. From then on, the 300's actions have gone down in history as a model of courage in adversity. It has inspired poets and artists down the centuries, and was immortalised in 2006 movie 300, which saw Gerard Butler star as the brave King Leonidas. But military historian Myke Cole has claimed the tale of the famous battle, which took place 2,500 years ago, is simply a 'myth', according to the Express. King Leonidas I of Sparta led a group...
SAN JOSE – The situation at quarterback for San Jose State remains unclear, but this much is known: The Spartans can compete whichever Nick is under center. With Nick Starkel sidelined by injury,  Nick Nash got his first collegiate start Saturday night and led the Spartans to a 37-31 victory over New Mexico State. Starkel, the starter in SJSU’s storybook season, was so firmly entrenched that Nash had spent the past two weeks working at wide receiver. An injury — Starkel hurt his left (non-throwing) arm in the previous game at Western Michigan — changed everything. Coach Brent Brennan steadfastly refuses to provide details on injuries.  He stonewalled all last week and offered no hints about Starkel’s status. But he acknowledged having known all along that Nash would be the guy Saturday night. It wasn’t going to be either of the freshmen — Walker Eget or Natano Woods. “We knew that it was going to have to be that way probably Monday night, Monday afternoon,” Brennan said, “so we started putting together that game plan. With the youth...

Amid the banners, flags and emblems displayed at the Jan. 6 insurrection, it was strange, especially for a classicist like myself, to see some in ancient Greek. The phrase molon labe, “come and take [them]”—a phrase attributed to King Leonidas of Sparta, in reply to demands he lay down his arms—was on full display there, as it has often been elsewhere, including on the face masks of Marjorie Taylor Greene. Dozens of products—T-shirts, decals, epaulets, bumper stickers, tattoo templates, and, oddly enough, noise-canceling headphones—now bear the slogan. Above all, the terse Greek sentence—its brevity showing why Sparta, situated in the region called Laconia, has given us the English word “laconic”—adorns guns of every size and description. Pistols bear it on their grips, rifles on their stocks, semi-automatic weapons on their barrels and ammo clips. One gunmaker, the Swiss-German firm Sig Sauer, markets a handgun with molon labe inlaid in 24-karat gold, as part of its “Spartan” line of personal-carry weapons. Leonidas allegedly spoke those newly prominent words in the narrow pass of Thermopylae, 2,500 years ago this month. He...
The most mind-blowing stat from Michigan State football’s season-opening victory over Northwestern has to do with Kenneth Walker III’s awesome performance. Michigan State football proved a lot of people wrong on Friday night when they pulled off a surprise victory over Northwestern. Kenneth Walker III gets most of the credit for that. The Spartans running back had four touchdowns and 264 yards in the opening outing.Kenneth Walker III had an incredible Michigan State football debutThe craziest thing about that rushing total? It was more than any single Michigan State running back managed over the entirety of last season. In 2020, Jordon Simmons led the team with 219 yards in five games. Connor Heyward had 200 in seven games. Walker transferred from Wake Forest and made an immediate impact for the Spartans. He’s already proven himself as an upgrade. They still talk about this streak. Every time De La Salle plays a regional opponent capable of an upset, the latest being just this past Saturday, someone wonders if this will be the night that the Concord powerhouse finally loses to a team from the northern half of the state. And by north, we mean north of the Fresno area. It hasn’t happened in 30 years. Ten years ago tonight, Bellarmine came about as close as you can get. Technically, Palma and Clayton Valley were closer, tying the Spartans in 2004, at a time before the overtime rule was implemented. On Sept. 2, 2011, in Concord, Bellarmine played De La Salle to a 14-14 tie through four quarters. Then after De La Salle, ranked second nationally at the time, scored a touchdown and missed the extra point on its possession of the first overtime, Bellarmine quarterback Travis McHugh ran across the goal line on a naked bootleg to even the score. Kick the extra point and the regional/Bay Area streak would have been history. “Right...
SAN JOSE – Beating the Southern Utah Thunderbirds is one thing. Playing USC is another, as San Jose State coach Brent Brennan is well aware. “USC is that team that everybody grew up watching,” Brennan said after the Spartans’ season-opening 45-14 win Saturday night. “They’ve always been incredible, they’re well-coached, they have awesome personnel. They lost one game a year ago, they lost in the conference championship. They have a first-round draft pick at quarterback, they’ve got draft picks at every position. So how do we get ready for that? For me, it’s day by day. We take it slow and we focus on the process.” Encouraged by his team’s effort, Brennan knows it will take more to beat the 15th-ranked Trojans in their season opener next Saturday at the Los Angeles Coliseum (2 p.m., Pac-12 Network) “I think we have a lot to clean up,” Brennan said. “Obviously there were too many penalties.” Penalties nullified two SJSU touchdowns. Another flag figured in a Southern Utah touchdown. Quarterback Nick Starkel threw an interception — a pick-six,...
Nate Starkel is coming off one of the most successful debut seasons by a San Jose State quarterback. Can the senior follow with a season that will vault him into the pantheon of Spartan signal-callers? SJSU has a rich quarterback tradition. So rich that Steve DeBerg, a member of the school’s Sports Hall of Fame who set nine school records in his two seasons with the Spartans before playing 21 seasons in the NFL, didn’t make our list of the five best QBs in school history. Entering this season, Starkel fits in more closely with one-year sensations such as Ralph Martini, Roger Proffitt and Chon Gallegos. Starkel hit the ground running after transferring from Arkansas. He led the Spartans to an unbeaten regular season  (7-0) and the Arizona Bowl against Ball State. Each of SJSU’s wins were by at least 10 points. Starkel passed for 2,174 yards and 17 touchdowns, completing 64.2 percent of his attempts in his debut season. He was intercepted only seven times. If Starkel can duplicate or improve on what he...
What goes up, must come down. Will that be the case at San Jose State after climbing to the peak of the Mountain West Conference for the first time in program history? Sustainability for success isn’t a recent staple for the Spartans, who’ve failed to enjoy consecutive winning seasons for nearly three decades. But after going undefeated a year ago in a truncated COVID-19 regular season and besting Boise State for the first time in 15 tries to claim the Mountain West title, there’s a growing sense of optimism that San Jose State is trending upward in advance of Saturday night’s season opener at home. “The nation took notice, obviously,” said Jesse Kurtz, lead anchor of the Mountain West Network. “And then the broadcast networks this year. Look no further than the games that were picked up for television for San Jose State. … They’re putting a product out there that people want to see.” Brent Brennan, the 2020 Lombardi Foundation College Football Coach of the Year, enters his fifth year at the helm with...
“He was at the short end of the field when he played for me. So, on this side where they have the best receiver, I know I’m in business. I have no more worries, I know he’s going to do that job.” On May 5, 2021 at 8:00 p.m. Frederick DuchessPress During the three seasons of Benjamin Saint-Germain at Old Montreal, Denise Duchess was the defensive coordinator for the Spartans from 2014 to 2016. “Athlete he took it. Bigger, faster. Athletes like that, not much spent here, especially in this situation. It’s an easy position to break the status quo,” he said of his former cornerback, drafted at 74.e Last Friday night queue. Duchess now occupies the same functions with the carabiners of the University of Montreal, although he has not yet been able to participate in any training. Michigan State is on the bubble for the 2021 NCAA Tournament — a rare spot for the Big Ten powerhouse.   The Spartans have made 22 straight tournament appearances under Tom Izzo. Michigan State’s last miss was in 1996-97 in Izzo’s second season. Michigan State (14-10) started the 2020-21 season with six straight victories, but they lost four of their first six Big Ten games before having three games postponed because of COVID-19.   The Spartans, however, are making a run just in time for March. Will that be enough to make the Big Dance? MORE: Projecting the Field of 68 for the 2021 NCAA Tournament Can Michigan State make the NCAA Tournament? Sporting News had Michigan State as one of “first four out” in the latest Field of 68. Michigan State basketball is squarely on the NCAA Tournament bubble and in danger of snapping a lengthy run of March Madness appearances. There is a reason that many college basketball fans substitute Izzo for the word March come tournament time. The Michigan State Spartans have become NCAA Tournament fixtures under head coach Tom Izzo, who has always done a tremendous job getting his teams playing their basketball by the time March Madness rolls around. The Spartans have reached the dance for 22 straight seasons, the third-longest active streak in Division I, and Michigan State reached the Final Four when the NCAA Tournament was last held in 2019. The last edition of March Madness without Izzo’s team came back in 1997, which was his second year on the job. Related Story: Blank printable March Madness bracket The Spartans went 17-12 in that season and 9-9 in Big Ten play, a mark that saw them finish sixth in the conference during the regular season. Here’s what has to happen for Michigan State to make the NCAA Tournament. The clock is officially starting to run out for Michigan State, which enters this week at just 11-9 overall and 5-9 in Big Ten play. Those numbers, combined with a NET ranking of 81 entering tonight’s game with Illinois, explain why the Spartans aren’t even on the bubble right now. The good news for Tom Izzo’s team is the Big Ten did the Spartans a solid with their rescheduled games from an earlier COVID pause. Games against Illinois and Michigan have been added to Michigan State’s schedule, providing some solid opportunities for the Spartans to rack up some quality wins. Right now the biggest roadblock for Michigan State is an abysmal performance against Quadrant 1 foes, with the Spartans going just 2-8 in ten opportunities against them. A third Quad 1 win fell off the board when Rutgers slipped outside of the NET’s top 30, turning Michigan State’s home victory against them into a Quadrant 2 win instead.Michigan State basketball has a path to the NCAA TournamentA bad...
Despite a 6-0 start that saw Michigan State basketball rated as high as no. 4 in the polls, there’s a good chance the Spartans miss the NCAA Tournament. The Michigan State Spartans are a regular in the NCAA Tournament and the 2020-21 campaign looked like it would be no different. A hot start to the year that included a 6-0 run in non-conference play had the Spartans ranked as high as no. 4 in the polls, but everything has fallen apart for Michigan State in Big Ten play. A 3-7 start to Big Ten play has Michigan State entering the week nowhere near the NCAA Tournament bubble. A win over Duke in the Champions Classic has lost a lot of luster thanks to the struggles of the Blue Devils while a bad loss to Northwestern is an anchor on the Spartans’ resume.Michigan State basketball needs to win the Big Ten Tournament to make the NCAA TournamentThe NET rankings, the NCAA’s new metric that has essentially replaced the RPI for the selection committee, has Michigan State rated 91st. Can this team of San Jose State Spartans do it one more time? Can it bring more thrills to an expanding fanbase and end the season the way it started — perfect? While the football team has emerged as the best story of the college season — one that can complete its undefeated journey at the Arizona Bowl on Thursday — another team has brought that story to life via social meda and is aiming for its own perfect ending. Cam Radford and his video production crew have prepared this week in Tucson just as the football team has, making sure nothing is left uncovered as San Jose State closes in on its first perfect season since 1939. Radford, 33, is the director of digital communications for San Jose State football. He was the man behind the video that went viral in spring 2017, the one in which Alonzo Carter, the assistant coach whose previous career was as a dancer for MC Hammer, showed the team his stuff on the field one day at practice. Minnesota and Michigan State are heading in different directions, with the Spartans having lost two straight while Minnesota is coming off a dramatic Christmas Day comeback victory over fourth-ranked Iowa. Minnesota ranks in the top 10 among Division I teams in possessions per game with point guard Marcus Carr leading the way with 24.6 points and 6.2 assists per game. His 8.6 free-throw attempts per game are seventh among qualifying players as Minnesota leads the country in free-throw attempts per game. When the teams meet on Monday night in Minneapolis, Michigan State will look to keep Minnesota off the free-throw line by holding the Gophers to only one shot per possession as the Spartans are 19th among Division I teams in defensive rebound rate while Minnesota is 214th in total rebound rate. While Minnesota is making just 31.9 percent of its 3-point shots, the Spartans’ defense ranks 273th in opponents’ 3-point shooting percentage and fails to turn teams over, ranking 286th in steals on a per-possession basis. With Michigan State ranking No. 1 in assists per game and per...
SAN JOSE — The San Jose State Spartans football team left town Sunday to write the final chapter of the greatest season in school history. While it’s true that the 1939 team went 13-0, those Spartans didn’t have to play amid a global pandemic that forced them to move six hours away just to have training camp. Or play their games in an empty stadium. Or play a home game in Hawaii and two more in Las Vegas. Or be the subject of controversy instead of celebration. “The hits just kept coming,” one of the team’s star players, defensive tackle Cade Hall, said Saturday. Hall was talking about the season, but he just as easily could have been talking about the past week. The Spartans survived all the hits this season, putting together a 7-0 record, winning the Mountain West championship game against conference kingpin Boise State and rising to No. 19 in the latest Associated Press poll. Only once in history has SJSU been ranked higher; the 1939 Spartans were 18th. And yet, when...
No matter what happens in the Mountain West championship game today against Boise State, San Jose State knows its magical season will not end at Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas. The Spartans are going to a bowl game for the first time since they beat Georgia State in the Cure Bowl to finish a 6-7 season in 2015. But which bowl? San Jose State, 6-0 for the first time since going 13-0 in 1939, can make the process simple. If it beats Boise State, the Spartans will play in the bowl game designed for the Mountain West champion. It’ll be San Jose State vs. Mid-American Conference champion Ball State in the Arizona Bowl at Arizona Stadium in Tucson on Dec. 31. But if the Spartans lose to Boise State, then it’ll be the Broncos against Ball State in the Arizona Bowl, and San Jose State will go … well, it depends on where you look. Here are the latest bowl projections as of midday Saturday: Athlon Sports Birmingham Bowl, Jan. 1:...
Where the outside saw darkness, coach Brent Brennan saw the light. Before the 2019 season, Brennan showed his players screenshots of scoreboards from their 1-11 season. There were four times when the Spartans were tied or leading in the fourth quarter. They lost three of those games, but Brennan made his point: They were close. For the players who are still around, the message stuck. And while San Jose State’s improbable season has caught the college football world by surprise, the undefeated Spartans knew this type of success would come. “I remember those pictures,” linebacker Kyle Harmon said. “The memory I have of those was that we are not too far off here, regardless of record or what people might be saying.” Two years removed from the one-win season, San Jose State will face Boise State on Saturday in Las Vegas in its first appearance in the Mountain West championship game. No matter the outcome, the Spartans (6-0) are bowl-bound for the first time since 2012. The historic season is a far cry from where San...
Last weekend, all logic pointed to a San Jose State loss. The undefeated Spartans’ previous two games had been canceled. They couldn’t practice or play at home because of new county restrictions. They had to travel from the brisk Bay Area to hot and humid Honolulu to play Hawaii, which had just beaten the only other Mountain West team without a loss this season, Nevada. What happened in the middle of the Pacific spoke volumes about San Jose State football in 2020. Under circumstances that would’ve caused most teams to wilt, the Spartans didn’t miss a beat. They scored the first 21 points, all in the first quarter, and went on to a double-digit victory that kept them in a prime position to play in the Mountain West championship game next weekend. If San Jose State beats Nevada on Friday night in Las Vegas, the Spartans are in. San Jose State’s official slogan is, “Climb the mountain.” Given all the Spartans have endured, and how they’ve responded, BYU’s might be more appropriate.  “Any time....
In their third game of the season, the depleted Notre Dame Fighting Irish slumped to a defeat. They had come off a win against Detroit, but they were always second favorites in the game against Ohio State. Their solid home record was the only thing working in their favor. They were unbeaten in over 20 games since 2017 at the Joyce Center. At half-time, it seemed like the Fighting Irish could hold on to their record. But the Buckeyes kept the pressure on and piled on 56 points in the 2nd half to win by five points. This is their second loss after the season opener loss to the Michigan State Spartans. Could the Notre Dame Fighting Irish have been in a better position? While their record might read 1-2 currently, it could have potentially been 3-0. They lost by just 10 points to the Spartans and now this was a five-point loss. SAN JOSE — San Jose State’s game Saturday against Hawaii will kick off at 3 p.m. Pacific, the school announced Wednesday, but where the undefeated Spartans are practicing remains a mystery for now. A school spokesman responded to questions about when the undefeated team will depart for Hawaii and where it currently is conducting practices by emailing, “we’re following county guidelines and preparing for Hawaii as it relates to this week’s team activities.” That’s a noticeable difference from its county neighbor to the North, Stanford. The private school outlined its itinerary for this Saturday’s game at Washington and next week’s game at Oregon State in a news release Wednesday. The San Jose State game is scheduled to be broadcast by Spectrum Sports, Hawaii’s broadcaster. But fans can watch the action on the Team1 Sports app free of charge, according to a San Jose State news release. The game originally was scheduled to be played at San Jose’s CEFCU Stadium, but officials from the school and the Mountain West Conference had to find a new location because...
Here’s a look at some of the significant games in the San Jose State-Fresno State rivalry over the past 35 years. 1986: San Jose State 45, Fresno State 41 — Mike Perez outdueled Heisman hopeful Kevin Sweeney, throwing for 433 yards. The teams scored 38 points in the fourth quarter and combined for 1,072 yards of offense in the game. SJSU went on to the California Bowl and routed Miami (Ohio) 37-7. 1987: San Jose State 20, Fresno State 16 — For the second year in a row, the Spartans rallied with less than two minutes left to beat the Bulldogs. This time, it was Kenny Jackson, who scored on a 14-yard run off a trap play with 1:34 left. This was SJSU’s last 10-win season before the Spartans went 11-2 in 2012. 1990: San Jose State 42, Fresno State 7 — Fresno State was going for its third straight conference title, but two TD runs by Leon Hawthorne and Paul Franklin’s 24-yard interception return for a TD put this one away by halftime. SJSU then beat...
(CBS)- If you watched a Michigan State game over the last two years, you likely heard the name Xavier Tillman quite a bit throughout the broadcast. The 6’8″ 245-pound forward routinely stuffed the stat sheet for the Spartans. He also did plenty of things that don’t show up in the box score, like setting hard screens, making the defensive rotation just ahead of the ball, anticipating where it’s going next. Playing against him is likely exhausting. Tillman prides himself on that hard work, the gritty areas of the game that others may do, but with no particular joy in the task. That playing style was instilled in him early by his mother, Tanya Powell-May. SAN JOSE — From the time his team put the finishing touches on an impressive win over San Diego State to when he boarded the plane to come home less than 90 minutes later, San Jose State coach Brent Brennan said he received 592 text messages of congratulations. As of early Monday afternoon, an appreciative Brennan had only whittled down the number of unread messages to 363 — as he heard from other coaches like Jeff Tedford and Mike MacIntyre, and alumni like former NFL receiver James Jones. “It’s funny,” Brennan said. “Everyone loves you when you win, they hate you when you lose. That’s the world we live in, but I do think that it’s pretty cool to hear from people, and know that a lot of people are excited about our process.” There’s no doubt about that, especially after the Spartans beat San Diego State 28-17 on Friday to improve to improve to 3-0 for the first time in 38 years. The excitement will only build, too, should San Jose State beat UNLV on Saturday...
A week after renewing their heated rivalry, both Michigan and Michigan State fell flat. It’s hard to figure out which team should feel more disturbed. The 23rd-ranked Wolverines lost their second straight game Saturday, falling 38-21 to No. 13 Indiana. It’s been quite a decline for Michigan after what looked like a promising season-opening win over Minnesota. Less was expected from Michigan State, but the Spartans upset the Wolverines last weekend. Then they were routed Saturday, 49-7 by Iowa. “Totally unacceptable performance,” Michigan State coach Mel Tucker said. “Our standard is much higher than what we’ve shown. We’re going to go back and take a hard look at every single play, every single player.” Plenty of football fans in Michigan probably had a similar reaction on this day. The Spartans failed to build on their big victory over the Wolverines, and rivalry considerations aside, that win lost some of its luster when Michigan lost again. For a second straight week, the Wolverines had problems in pass coverage. Indiana’s Michael Penix Jr. threw for 342 yards and a career-high three touchdowns....
San Jose State is 3-0 for the first time since 1982 when the coach was John Elway’s dad. The Spartans’ latest victory — 28-17 over San Diego State — was the signature win of Brent Brennan’s coaching tenure. Not only did the Spartans beat a Mountain West bell cow, but they did it after losing their quarterback on the first series. Nick Starkel, the graduate transfer from Arkansas who had thrown seven touchdowns in victories over Air Force and New Mexico, left the field with an undisclosed injury. When he returned, he was in street clothes and the Spartans were down 10-0 on the road. Still the Spartans won. This is how they did it. 1. Nick Nash’s unexpected heroics Sophomore quarterback Nick Nash had never gotten extended playing time, let alone start a game, but that’s essentially what happened Friday night. Nick Starkel is helped off the field after taking a hard hit early in the first quarter. ( Miguel Vasconcellos) Starkel went out, Nash came in, and he performed admirably. With his...
Did anyone have a worse week than Michigan football after losing again to Michigan State? This week in the Powerless Five, upsets and embarrassments abound. One team deserves an honorable mention this week, and that is Georgia, more specifically, Georgia’s offense. This was supposed to be the year the Bulldogs opened things up and modernized the offense. Saturday against Kentucky, Georgia threw the ball 14 times and ran it 42. 1. Michigan WolverinesLet the Harbaugh to the NFL talk begin in Ann Arbor. Under Harbaugh, the Wolverines have yet to defeat the Buckeyes and are 3-3 against little brother Michigan State, and no one likes to lose to their little brother. This game against the Spartans was quite odd in many ways. The Spartans exposed some issues in the Wolverines’ secondary. Last week against Rutgers, the Spartans’ offense played well but made critical mistakes against the Knights. This week, Michigan State did not make those mistakes, and Michigan could not force them into mistakes. For example, Michigan State quarterback Rocky Lombardi threw for 300 yards again this week, but no...
Michigan State football is so bad but the bright side for Spartans fans is that it’s almost basketball season. The Michigan State football season just begun but it’s already over. It’s going to be a long season for the Spartans if the start of their opener vs. Rutgers is any indication. Rutgers has been one of the worst, if not the worst, Power 5 team in college football the last few years but they look like Ohio State against Mel Tucker’s team. Rutgers scored on their first possession, then forced a fumble and forced a second fumble on the one-yard line, stoning Michigan State on fourth down and took a commanding 14-0 lead in the first quarter. It’s time for Michigan State football fans to look forward to basketball seasonSure, a 14-0 lead may not be a commanding lead in many games, but considering Rutgers needed five Big Ten games before they put up 14 in a game last year, this start vs. Michigan State is more than noteworthy. It was always expected this would be a rebuilding year of sorts...
SAN JOSE — For senior linebacker Tysyn Parker, being back in San Jose means piling a lot on his plate. As in food. Parker, a 6-foot-1, 237-pound starter, reported servings were a little skimpy with coaches doling out meals to the San Jose State football team during a 1 ½-week stay in Humboldt County to prepare for the Oct. 24 season opener. But having coaches moonlight as food servers also was an example of how the Spartans became a family heading into an abbreviated season that begins at CEFCU Stadium next weekend against Air Force. “No job is too big or too little in our program,” Parker said. While the Spartans say they are ecstatic to start practicing on campus Friday, they also are grateful for the experience at Humboldt State University behind the so-called Redwood Curtain. School officials worked out a deal with Humboldt State to temporarily relocate the team 320 miles to the north to avoid Santa Clara County restrictions that did not permit contact drills until this week. The team...
After months of uncertainty, San Jose State will indeed play football this year. And no matter what unfolds, the 2020 season will go down as the most unique in program history. Aside from an eight-game schedule and late-October start, the Spartans spent 10 days practicing more than 300 miles from campus, at Humboldt State in Arcata, because Santa Clara County coronavirus restrictions prevented them from contact drills at their home facility. Regardless of the circumstances or challenges, the goal of breaking .500 for the first time under coach Brent Brennan remains intact. Here are five unanswered questions ahead of the 2020 season, which starts Oct. 24 against Air Force: 1. How will no fans in the stands affect San Jose State? By now, San Jose State’s players and personnel have had many opportunities to observe fanless games across the country. How the Spartans will perform in empty stadiums remains to be seen. Football without fans, at both the collegiate and professional levels, has been defined by several nuances. Offenses have clearer lines of communication....
Jalen Watts-Jackson, Michigan State Spartans, Michigan Wolverines. (Photo by Rey Del Rio/Getty Images) ESPN had to remind Michigan football fans of something horrible from 2015.Michigan football would like to forget what happened vs. Michigan State football back in 2015. Too bad ESPN College Football wants the internet to never forget what occurred in that Big Ten rivalry game. It was Jim Harbaugh’s first year as the Michigan Wolverines head coach. It was 23-21 Wolverines with merely seconds on the clock. Deep in their own territory, they were forced to punt. Good coverage would have ended the ball game. Then, something unthinkable happened. Michigan punter Blake O’Neill fumbled the snap. Michigan State cornerback Jalen Watts-Jackson scooped up the loose ball en route to most glorious pay dirt. The result was a shocking 27-23 victory for the Spartans in The Big House. Mark Dantonio’s team remained undefeated, as the Spartans went on to win the Big Ten Championship and reach the College Football Playoff. As for Michigan, we got arguably the greatest and most definitive example of the surrender cobra of all...
San Jose State will no longer allow the “Spartan Up” gesture at sporting events. According to SJSUNews.com, the famous symbol, which is meant to look like a spartan helmet, for the schools athletic program is no longer allowed after university president Mary Papazian announced the decision in an email to the student body. (RELATED: David Hookstead Is The True King In The North When It Comes To College Football) Why is it being banned? Well, it’s because it resembles the okay hand sign, which some now claim to be a symbol of white power.   View this post on Instagram   A post shared by San Jose State Football (@sanjosestatefb) on May 31, 2020 at 4:51pm PDT Yes, you read that correctly. SJSU banned an athletic symbol that’s known for being the okay sign because some people think it’s racist. The SJSUNews.com article literally links to an ADL page talking about how the belief that it represents racism was a hoax started on 4chan. Congrats, everyone! You banned a hand sign over a hoax! Job well done!   View this post on Instagram...
