Last week, California health officials encouraged all adults in the state to get a COVID booster. But the advice conflicts with current CDC guidance. As a result, there is now widespread confusion about who can book a booster appointment and how."Do not turn a patient away who is requesting a booster," that's what California's public health officer wrote last week in a letter, saying all adults in the state should be allowed to determine their own risk of exposure.RELATED: Santa Clara Co. clarifies where residents can get boosters after promising everyone can get oneBut online vaccine scheduling systems have yet to catch up with California's more liberal booster policy - which is now open to anyone 18 and older, six months after full vaccination with Pfizer or Moderna, or two months after a J&J shot.Santa Clara mom, Tru Love, tried to make an appointment online at Walgreens. But that led to booster screening questions, based on CDC guidelines, which ruled her out. She's not 65 or older, no underlying medical conditions, doesn't live in a long term care facility, and...

And adding to the challenge is that this time around, people can choose a different brand of vaccine for that extra dose.A number of factors, including the vaccine you started with and when your last dose was, help determine when you qualify. Just like the initial shots, boosters are free and will be available at pharmacies, doctors' offices and clinics. Here are some things to know:Who can get a COVID-19 booster shot now?If you got Pfizer or Moderna shots first, you're eligible if your last dose was at least six months ago and you're 65 or older, or are a younger adult who has health problems or a job or living conditions that put you at higher risk of severe illness or exposure to the coronavirus. Health care workers, for example, are included because they are regularly exposed to the virus and can't come to work with even the mildest of infections. Can you mix and match COVID-19 vaccines? CULVER CITY (KABC) -- If your pet needs a check-up anytime soon, you may want to try and make an appointment now.Veterinarians are experiencing a high volume of appointments and emergency visits that they can barely keep up with."Our patient loads over the last four years has increased 90%," said Access Specialty Animal Hospital administrator Michael James. At Access Specialty Animal Hospital in Culver City, you could wait five to seven hours for a walk-in appointment."Before the pandemic there just weren't as many pets. So with that, the number of emergency visits weren't as significant," James said.Angela Lindstrom came all the way from Fullerton for her cat's appointment."I was trying to make an appointment about a little bit over a month ago and the earliest that I could get in Orange County was November 17," Lindstrom said.James also said there's an industry-wide staffing shortage, and that the increase in patients has also led to burnout."The more patients you add on to that, it becomes a strain on the staff," he said.Follow Sophie on social media:FacebookTwitterInstagram
TheWrap launched an investigation into its CEO Sharon Waxman after she was accused of stopping an employee from taking his fiancée to the oncologist for a cancer check-up and then screaming at him for slacking off. The 58-year-old founder of the Hollywood-focused media business news site reportedly told a former employee whose fiancée had cancer: 'What are you thinking? 'Does she not have a mother or a brother or a family member that can do that s*** for her?'  This was the ex-employee's 'last straw,' which happened in fall of 2020, and he quit on the spot, according to The Daily Beast. Current and former anonymous workers at TheWrap dished more details to The Daily Beast, likening Waxman's workplace to The Devil Wears Prada and Waxman herself to 'Jekyll and Hyde'. 'It was really demoralizing and degrading,' they said, referring to the dictatorial magazine editor Miranda Priestly in the film, who was played by Meryl Streep. The CEO also allegedly had 'screaming outbursts' and was known to tell off employees who had to handle family emergencies during work hours. Sharon Waxman (pictured), 58,...
Arizona Sen. Kysten Sinema perplexed Democratic colleagues once again Friday – this time by skipping town to see a foot doctor with plans to attend a big dollar fundraiser amid tense budget talks in Washington.  Sinema, a key centrist holdout on the $3.5 trillion reconciliation deal that is being trimmed, left DC for a medical appointment at the tail end of a week where she went to the White House four times.  Her office said she remained in touch with the White House even while tending to her hurt foot. 'Senator Sinema is in Phoenix where she has a medical appointment today, and where she continues remote negotiations with the White House,' her office said in a statement. 'Last night, Kyrsten and our team offered the White House continued discussions and negotiations for this morning. We're awaiting word from the White House for their availability,' the statement added. Sen. Secretary of the Department of Energy Jennifer Granholm said at a press conference at the White House on Tuesday that people who are driving electric cars are not affected by the hacker-forced shutdown of the Colonial Pipeline. “I just have a question for each of you. I’ll start with you, Secretary Granholm, because ladies first,” a reporter asked. “Obviously, we have the acute issues with the Colonial Pipeline ransomware attack. But looking more holistically in a macro view, how does this speed up the efforts at DOE to move in more of a renewable direction since this is going to have an impact on people at the pump?” “Yeah, I mean, we obviously are ‘all in’ on making sure that we meet the President’s goals of getting to 100 percent clean electricity by 2035 and net-zero carbon emissions by 2050,” Granholm said. “And, you know, if you drive an electric car, this would not be affecting you, clearly. “ “But it’s just — it’s another — it’s — I don’t want to — this company is acting in a responsible way,” Granholm said. “They took their pipeline...

The first trick is to pre-register for an appointment at one of the state’s seven mass vaccination sites and regional collaboratives. But remember,...

An eight-year-old boy received a COVID-19 vaccine in Texas last month in what officials have called an 'oversight' due to 'human error.'  The Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccines are only approved for those aged 18 and older and the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine for those ages 16 and older. But a father said he registered his elementary school-aged son for an appointment at a drive-thru site in Dallas County site run by first responders in Grand Prairie, where a paramedic injected the chilld, reported NBC DFW. He assumed that because he had received a QR code confirming the appointment that the child was eligible to get vaccinated.    The father did not know until he spoke to a pediatrician after the fact that children are not eligible to receive coronavirus vaccines. Currently, several vaccine manufacturers including Pfizer, Moderna and AstraZeneca are running clinical trials on children, some as young as six months old. Travel nurse Tiquella Russell of Texas prepares to administer a dose of the COVID-19 vaccine at a clinic at Martin Luther King Jr. Community Hospital in South Los Angeles on February 25, 2021, in Los Angeles, California. Latino communities were among the first to be devastated by the novel coronavirus pandemic, becoming likelier to contract the virus, and die at a disproportionate rate. Now these communities are facing newer obstacles when it comes to vaccine accessibility, ranging from language and technology issues to lack of a primary health provider,The New York Times reports.  There have been negative effects already, findings indicated. “Hispanic people across the United States continue to be especially underrepresented among those vaccinated for Covid-19, according to a New York Times analysis of state-reported race and ethnicity information,” the report said. These barriers “stand in the way of higher vaccination rates, even as the vaccine becomes more widely available,” the report continued. “A trusted health care provider who shares information about the vaccine can alleviate some of these barriers, according to public health experts,” the report said. “But Hispanic people are less likely to have...
(CNN)I didn't know being fat counted as an underlying condition that would qualify me for a coronavirus vaccine until a few weeks ago. I live in New York state, which in February opened up eligibility to people with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 or higher. When my roommate told me about BMI eligibility, I weighed myself for the first time in years and wasn't surprised to find I made the cut. I would've qualified before the pandemic, but -- ironically -- my extra Covid-19 pounds put me more solidly in range. At first, I thought that I would not sign up for a vaccine appointment because there is nothing wrong with me. I didn't want to take a slot from someone who actually needed it. But there is clear evidence connecting Covid-19 outcomes and weight. Studies have found that coronavirus death rates are higher in countries with higher rates of obesity. And while having a higher BMI does not increase the chances of contracting Covid-19, it has been linked to a greater risk of becoming seriously ill from...

The teen was told that because he was registered at another surgery in his university town of Southampton, Hants, he could either wait two days to re-register or go to an urgent care walk-in centre. He went to the centre and was seen by nurse practitioner Briony Jefferis, who wrongly diagnosed him with tonsillitis and gave him antibiotics. Over the next 24 hours Mr Hudson's condition deteriorated in front of his parents who called 999 when he slipped into unconsciousness. He went into cardiac arrest but was delayed in getting...
The new prime minister chosen by President Tshisekedi represents a new generation of leaders. This choice reinforces the new majority of “Sacred Union” desired by the Head of State. Portrait Un young man (43 years old), originally from Likasi in Katanga, Congolese Prime Minister Jean-Michel Sama Lukonde Kyenge, whom the press calls “Sam” Lukonde, represents the rising generation. His appointment to replace Ilunga Ilunkamba, a veteran of politics, has been rather well received by Congolese opinion. Indeed, this engineer by training, who had just been appointed to the post of general manager at Gécamines in the hope that he would counterbalance the very powerful Albert Yuma, “ticks several boxes” of the political spectrum and he has ‘a network of personal relationships within several parties.
The swollen face of Amélie Challeat, an influential blogger on Instagram, is touring the web. She says she was hit by her neighbor while she was with her premature baby. Above all, she claims that she was unable to make an appointment with the police to file a complaint. She detailed this assault of which she says she was a victim on the social network. The instagrammer explains that she was returning from the hospital with her little girl, born premature in October at 26 weeks and who must undergo regular examinations, when she crossed her neighbor. “He couldn’t stand that I left the car for five minutes in front of the door of the building to bring my baby in a stroller when it was minus 5 degrees. And that he is fragile and cannot stay in the cold. . “ The situation quickly escalates. “In the hall of the building he yelled at me, telling me that I was not allowed to leave the car, that I had to park it elsewhere. I told him to...
DENVER (CBS4)– The COVID-19 vaccine program is picking up steam with vaccine going directly to pharmacies, like King Soopers and Walmart, without cutting into the allocation to states. But it is still tough to get appointments for the shots. (credit: Michael Ciaglo/Getty Images) Clyde Mancuso of Centennial is trying to get a COVID vaccination for his wife. It should be getting easier. King Soopers is now one of the businesses getting the Moderna vaccine directly from the government through the Federal Retail Pharmacy program. But when Mancuso went online to make an appointment what he got was “sorry there are no available time slots at this location. Try another.” “I did that at 12-15 King Soopers locations, and it was all the same, it said no vaccine available,” Mancusco said. It was good news when Gov. Ralph Northam announced last week that CVS would be making 26,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccines available per week in Virginia, but the program launched early on Tuesday and has led to confusion so far. “Not an ideal rollout,” state vaccination coordinator Dr. Danny Avula said at a media briefing Tuesday. The plan was for CVS to start accepting appointments on Thursday for vaccinations starting Friday, Avula said. But the site launched two days early in an effort to get all the people who had signed up for vaccine appointments with local health departments to get into the CVS system. That didn’t happen, and instead, when the site went live, anyone was able to sign up. Avula said the idea was for people who had signed up with local health departments to get into the CVS system when it opened Thursday, so as to reinforce Virginia’s equity guidelines and priorities. “For various reasons, CVS was … not able to deliver a technological solution that would allow us to preregister folks who had already been waiting...
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — The location of some vaccination sites are not being made public until someone makes an appointment. Dr. Cindy Schorzman with UC Davis Student Health Services says the demand for the shots continues to exceed supply. That’s why the locations of some sites are being kept secret. “We say we have your dose ready, get here within 15 minutes,” Dr. Schorzman said. Sutter Health System has three Valley vaccination clinics, but they are only disclosing the addresses to people who have appointments. But, they have still had to turn away people trying to drop in. The vaccine site at UC Davis is not a secret, but they are trying to keep people from crashing the clinic. Tracey Peterson, a 911 dispatcher, has been waiting a while to get her vaccine. “It’s a lot easier to get the vaccine, forget it, and done,” Peterson said. Peterson has been on a waitlist for the vaccine and got a welcome phone call Tuesday. “There are some people who will try to sneak in,” Dr. Schorzman said. “We do have security on-site...

Another problem is that the site is seeing people who have appointments showing up hours before their scheduled time. SOLANO COUNTY (CBS13) – The dash to get vaccinated is highlighting all kinds of delays in California’s distribution system. People are dealing with wait times lasting several hours or getting no call back at all. But some are finding ways to cut through cracks in the system and get in line. “Misinformation, no information, wrong information,” said Geoff Wilson. CBS13 spoke to people who, despite that, found success. Lola Ferguson, 68, talked to us just hours after getting her first dose. “I tell you – I hit the sweet spot,” she said. The sweet spot of a phone call to Kaiser Permanente at the right time. “I called at midnight and it was a 10-hour wait! So I set my alarm to get up at 7,” Ferguson said. It was the 7 a.m. call that finally went through. Ferguson advises others, “I would just randomly call once a day, different times,” she said. Don Swartzell, 77, said he got an appointment by emailing his primary care doctor at Kaiser directly, not by calling the mainline. They never replied to his...
NORTH TEXAS (CBSDFW.COM) — The pandemic has greatly limited access to local and state government offices and resulted in a waiver being granted for expired driver licenses and identification cards… but that grace period is coming to an end. The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) announced that the waiver on expiration dates for DLs and IDs will end on April 14, 2021. With that in mind, officials are urging customers who need to renew to make an appointment immediately. The waiver, granted in March of last year, applied to DLs, commercial DLs, commercial learner permits, ID cards and election identification certificates that expired on or after March 13, 2020. The push for residents whose documents have already expired, coupled with individuals renewing their information on-time will likely lead to longer than normal waits. To assist customers needing DL services, designated offices are now offering expanded hours from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Friday. Locations across North Texas offering extended hours include — CARROLLTON DALLAS SOUTH DENTON FORT WORTH MEGA...

Copywriter and Orlando, Florida, resident Monica Morrison became one such story this month. Although the healthy 35-year-old does not fall into any of Florida’s current vaccine priority groups, she was able to score a Moderna shot after driving her mother Cherie to get vaccinated and learning that the site had extra doses. Despite her not currently qualifying, nurses opted to vaccinate Morrison. This is her story.  I was lucky enough to get my 70-year-old mom a vaccine appointment at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando. Her appointment was on Jan. 6 — the day of...
Al Roker received his first dose of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine live on the Today show on Tuesday morning after spending the entire weekend trying to book an appointment through the New York State Department of Health website.  The weatherman, who qualified to get the vaccine in New York because he is over 65, scored a highly-coveted appointment at Manhattan's Lenox Hill Hospital, which made 300 available on Sunday. According to the Today show, they were all booked in less than 10 minutes.    'I kept hitting refresh, refresh, refresh on the browser and finally got in,' Al, 66, explained. 'They put up a certain number of appointments each day, and then, luck of the draw. You have to keep going in.' A lawyer has slammed Governor Andrew Cuomo for New York's 'disgraceful' vaccine roll-out saying he can't get an appointment for his 88-year-old grandma because the state-run sites are booked up until April.  Chris Marchese, a lawyer based in Washington DC, hit out at Cuomo on Twitter Thursday saying the state's system for getting the COVID-19 vaccine is 'so messed up' that his grandmother Barbara Keller, soon to turn 89, has been unable to get a shot.   Both Cuomo and New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio have hit out at the federal government for a lack of doses and warned that they will run out of shots as soon as next week while eligible individuals could be waiting six months to be vaccinated given the current rate of supply.  New York receives just 300,000 doses per week and with the state this week expanding eligibility to those aged 65 and over and the immunocompromised, seven million people now fall into this priority list.   But others are pointing to issues within the state, with New York Assemblyman Ron Kim, a Democrat,...
Andrew Cuomo's vaccine rollout timeline nosedived even further Tuesday, with the governor now saying it could take six months for all priority people to get an appointment if the federal government continues to provide just 300,000 doses a week. In a conference call Tuesday, the New York governor upped his attack on the federal government over the slow vaccine distribution, saying that a change in CDC guidelines means around 7 million New Yorkers are now eligible for the current round of shots. Cuomo warned that this group can now expect to wait a staggering six months for a shot if the federal government continues to send just 300,000 doses per week to the Empire state - up from the already dismal 14-week timescale he warned of Monday. New York City endured one of the longest lockdowns during the first wave of the pandemic and many business owners such as restaurants and bars are teetering on the brink with indoor dining closed.  Vaccine distribution is being touted by the governor as the key to getting the city back up and running....
(CBS DETROIT) – On Monday, Michigan moved into a new phase of vaccination. All counties may begin vaccinating Michiganders over age 65. Some essential workers will also begin to be vaccinated including: school and child care staff frontline county, state and federal responders staff in jails, prisons and shelters “The more people we can get the safe and effective vaccine, the faster we can return to a sense of normalcy,” said Whitmer. “I urge all seniors to get the COVID-19 vaccine as soon as possible and that all Michiganders to make a plan to get vaccinated when it becomes available to you. And as always: mask up, practice safe social distancing, and avoid indoor gatherings where COVID-19 can easily spread from person to person. We will eliminate this virus together.” Whitmer said on Jan. 6, that 80 percent of deaths have occurred among those age 65 and older. In addition to vaccinating Michiganders who are 75+ in Phase 1B (Phase 1B, Group A), MDHHS is accelerating to vaccinate individuals 65-74 years old (Phase 1C Group A). MDHHS is...

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Under intense pressure to expand COVID vaccine eligibility, Gov. Andrew Cuomo says that starting Monday, millions more New Yorkers can begin making appointments to get vaccinated. It’s good news for police, firefighters, teachers, transit workers and those over 75. But with over 4 million New Yorkers now eligible, the governor says it could take weeks, if not months, to get an actual appointment. “Don’t be surprised if the appointment is three months from today,” Cuomo said Friday.
