You imitate the movement, but you never get to touch an elevator button to call it, for example. The new technology Kinetic Touchless, developed by the firm Stuck Design, Singapore encourages interaction with devices that work with buttons, but without actually pressing them. The idea is that there is no contact between human and machine. It would be very useful in these 2020 and 2021 pandemics. The Engadget portal reports that the technology mimics the movement of pressing with the fingers. Then a software recreates the tactile response of pressing a button. Therefore the user would have to execute the action, for a sensor to notice the intention. Technology is not limited to simply sinking a button with a simple movement. It also serves to pull outwards and could also be activated with other types of gestures. They explain that their sensors are extremely sensitive and capture movements from various angles. Where did the idea of not pressing a button come from? Obviously, the scientists behind this invention started working on it due to the coronavirus pandemic. The World...
In their COVID—19 information page, both the CDC and the WHO warn people against touching their faces with unwashed hands, since the virus can survive on surfaces. There’s been a rise in the use of touchless technologies as a result, and Singaporean studio Stuck Design envisions a world wherein passengers won’t even have to press elevator buttons with their fingers to get to where they need to go. The studio’s Kinetic Touchless technology can mimic the movement of one’s fingers and recreate the tactile response of pushing a button. It works by using motion as an input method so it doesn’t need direct contact and can imitate the movement from a distance. The studio says the type of touchless interaction its technology offers can be applied to various gestures, as well. That means buttons using the technology can sink inwards or move outwards if the user makes a pushing or pulling motion. A row of buttons can also follow the user’s finger if they make a sliding movement.

Dear Amy: I live in a high COVID-infected area. We are on the verge of a second shutdown. I do my best to stay home and limit the people I see. Columnist Amy Dickinson (Bill Hogan/Chicago Tribune)  Our apartment building has signs up requesting everyone wear their masks, and for one person/party to ride the elevator at a time. I wear my mask from the minute I leave my door to the minute I come back in. The biggest problem I am facing is with the elevator: people wearing no masks who push their way onto the elevator with me (as in: the door is closing and they stick their hand in to open it). If I see them waiting, I try to step back and say, “I’ll catch the next one,” but sometimes they push their way on, and I feel trapped in this situation. By BAILEY SCHULZ, Las Vegas Review-Journal LAS VEGAS (AP) — Rarely does a day go by without a Las Vegas Strip elevator or escalator out of service. Between routine maintenance, cleaning and vandalism, the machines face a number of hurdles that deter smooth operations. For some people, taking the stairs instead is just a sweaty inconvenience. For those who use scooters or wheelchairs, a paused elevator or escalator can foil vacation plans. “You just cross your fingers and hope (the elevator’s) going to work,” St. Louis resident Maria Barnes told the Las Vegas Review-Journal . Barnes visits Las Vegas with her scooter-using husband. “If we go (to Las Vegas) again and run into the problem that we ran into the last visit or two, we’ll probably start saying, ‘Eh, let’s skip it,’" she said. “We’ll go to our son’s (home in Phoenix) or go to San Diego. We’ll do something else.” The vast majority of Strip bridges, excluding a private pedestrian bridge at The Venetian, are maintained by Clark County. In total, the county is in charge of keeping 23...

WASHINGTON (AP) — In recent years Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg was surprised to find herself so popular that “everyone wants to take a picture with me.” The justice, who died Friday at 87, had become a feminist icon, with books, movies, clothing and even coloring books devoted to her. People wanted to give her awards. They wanted to hear her talk. Ginsburg was invited to speak so often that inevitably she was asked the same questions and delivered the same punch lines, always, it seemed, to a delighted new audience. Some of the things Ginsburg liked to tell groups: WHAT SHE HAD IN COMMON WITH A RAPPER Ginsburg came to be known as “The Notorious RBG,” a play on the name of the rapper ”The Notorious B.I.G.” Ginsburg liked to note they had one important thing in common.
