Alexander Charos/Facebook The Venus’ last full-length, Ancestor Simulator, was one of the best albums of 2020, but the St. Petersburg psych-rock band didn’t get many chances to play it live, opting instead to release a B-sides companion, Overlooked & Undercooked. The band, led by Alexander Charos (pictured), is finally meeting fans face-to-face at 9 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 5 when it plays The Bends—located at 919 1st Ave. N—alongside Chlorine Fields and Chaunces. The show is 21 & up, and free to attend. Longtime followers of Charos will be surprised to see the songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and Yoko Phono producer once again flanked by Tom Dicks, who played bass with Charos’ other band, Alexander & the Grapes’ on its 2012 debut Hemispheres. Dicks moved north to Nashville, then Raleigh, shortly after the release of the Grapes’ 2014 “Falling Apart” 7-inch. Charos told Creative Loafing Tampa Bay he is, “Stoked to have him back in town and playing music together again.” The Venus, which experimented with its lineup and sound for a handful of shows after the onset of the pandemic, will...
Rolling Stones fans are fighting back against the band's decision to remove Brown Sugar from their US tour setlist after it came under fire over its depiction of slavery and sexual violence.  The song was axed from the 13-date US tour over fears the British rockers would be 'cancelled' by woke music fans who take issue with lyrics like the opening lines: 'Gold Coast slave ship bound for cotton fields / Sold in the market down in New Orleans / Skydog slaver knows he's doin' all right / Hear him whip the women just around midnight.' Confirming its removal from this setlist in an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Keith Richards said the band did not want to get into 'conflicts' over the song. But furious Rolling Stones fans said they don't understand the controversy surrounding the track as it is clearly anti-slavery, with many saying artists should be free to express themselves without fearing 'cancel culture'.  Now fans are calling on the band to reintroduce the song by bombarding the group's official Instagram account with requests for it...
Can you imagine it? Over half a century and hundreds of millions of pounds later, and now both knights of the realm, Paul McCartney and Mick Jagger still can’t resist scoring points off each other. ‘I’m not sure I should say it,’ Sir Paul jibed this week in an interview in The New Yorker, but the Rolling Stones were ‘a blues cover band. That’s sort of what the Stones are. I think our [The Beatles’] net was cast a bit wider than theirs.’ Sir Mick has yet to respond, but earlier this year, after Paul claimed in a radio interview in the U.S. that ‘The Beatles were better [than the Stones]’ and that the Stones envied them because all four Beatles could sing, Jagger did hit back. ‘That’s so funny. He’s a sweetheart,’ he said of Paul. ‘There is obviously no competition . . . One band is unbelievably lucky to be still playing in stadiums, and the other band doesn’t exist.’ Miaow! Of course, they’re both right . . . to an extent. ‘I’m not sure I should say...
The living members of the iconic Canadian prog rock band Rush were "speechless" after they watched a video of the Ohio State University Marching Band performing one of their songs at the school's Saturday football game, according to comments from members after the game. The band brought in extra drums to pay tribute to Rush's late drummer Neil Peart, and the percussion section implemented 20 additional toms and 20 additional cymbals, according to an Ohio State release . "We're speechless," members Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson tweeted from the band's Twitter account , accompanied by three clapping emojis. LET IT BE: PAUL MCCARTNEY INSISTS JOHN LENNON WAS THE ONE WHO BROKE UP THE BEATLES The marching band's percussion group took position at the front and played "The Music of Rush," including "Tom Sawyer," "Red Barchetta," and "Fly by Night," the school said. Mick Jagger has announced the Rolling Stones have decided to stop performing Brown Sugar 'for now', amid discomfort about the 50-year-old classic's references to slavery. The band, currently on the road for a 13-date U.S. tour, have not played Brown Sugar - one of their most recognizable songs - since kicking off in St Louis on September 26. The 1969 song has been a staple of their live show since it came out 50 years ago, and is the second most played song in their catalog after Jumpin' Jack Flash, with 1,136 known performances, according to Rolling Stone magazine.  The last time the Stones played it live was August 30, 2019 at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, Florida.  Jagger, asked about the song's absence from their recent set lists, told The Los Angeles Times they had decided to give the song a break. Mick Jagger is pictured in 1969 at the Altamont Speedway festival in California - the first time they played Brown Sugar. He is seen with Mick Taylor, who left the band in 1974 and was replaced with Ronnie Wood...
NEW YORK (AP) — The last time Coldplay put out an album, it was like a warm embrace of Earth. This time, the British foursome has gone bigger — cosmically bigger. “We’re looking upwards and outwards and trying to find answers, and I think maybe trying to find some perspective,” says drummer Will Champion. “Music of the Spheres” is a spacy 12-track collection with waves of synth and airy melodies. The track “Infinity Sign” sounds like it was created inside a starburst and “Biutyful” is a hit of ecstasy in musical form. This is an album that should be playing as astronauts gather on a slowly spinning space station for a galactic rave. “It is a bit grander in its sound,” says lead singer Chris Martin. “The songs come first, but the picture frame of the title of ‘Music of the Spheres’ sort of easily said which songs might fit within it. But you’re always at the mercy of what what songs decide to show up.” Guitarist Jonny Buckland uses a fishing analogy: “The concept kind of builds the...
Sir Paul McCartney has set the record straight on the Beatles' split in 1970, insisting: 'I didn't instigate the split.' Speaking in an upcoming episode of BBC Radio 4's new interview series This Cultural Life, McCartney, 79, said: 'John walked into a room one day and said 'I am leaving the Beatles''.' He added: 'This was my band, this was my job, this was my life, so I wanted it to continue,' The Guardian reports. Candid: Paul McCartney, 79, has set the record straight on the Beatles' split in 1970, insisting: 'I didn't instigate the split' It has often been heavily implied that Paul instigated the band's break-up, with The Mirror reporting on the split in 1970 with the headline: 'Paul Quits The Beatles.' Keen to set the record straight, Paul insisted in his new interview that other band members (Ringo Starr and George Harrison) wanted the Beatles to continue, going as far as to say that if Lennon had not quit at the age of 29, the iconic group's journey 'could have been much longer'. The pandemic-delayed Met Gala and its fashion parade kicked off Monday night with a marching band and gymnast and early walkers in sultry, sparkly looks. Keke Palmer wore a stunning, earth-tone body hugger with a train, while Ilana Glazer took her moment on the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in feathery long sleeves and a creamy, high-neck gown. Emma Chamberlain went for a gold mini with cutouts at the waist and chunky mirror and chain detail. Gala overseer Anna Wintour arrived early with a wave to the crowd accompanied by her pregnant daughter, Bea Schafer, in a floral design with ruffles at the neck. The gala, which raises money for the museum's Costume Institute, was pushed last year from its traditional May berth and morphed this year into a two-part affair. It coincides with the opening of "In America: A Lexicon of Fashion," the first of a two-part exhibition at the Met's Anna Wintour Costume Center. READ MORE: Walnut Creek Man Dies Jumping Over Roiling Surf Along Oregon Coast Formed in 2013 by guitarist/singer Sean McVay, bassist Dan Reynolds and drummer Scott Donaldson, the band weaves together elements of melodic psychedelia indebted to pre-Dark Side Pink Floyd, progressive experimentation and riff-focused stoner rock to craft its unique sound. Events like Bellator 263 and a Black Crowes concert have gone forward with audiences since the Forum reopened in July.
That winter of 1965, the Rolling Stones had just released Satisfaction, seemingly the most smutty single ever. It wasn’t actually smutty at all — the most suggestive thing about it was the title — but they were at a peak of notoriety encouraged by their manager, Andrew Oldham, who realised that fans wanted something edgier than the family-friendly Beatles. Soon afterwards they did a gig at the ABC Cinema in Stockton-on-Tees and that’s where I first met Charlie Watts, interviewing him and the rest of the band backstage as a cub reporter for a northern newspaper. With the press depicting them as scruffy and dirty, I expected to be greeted by a bunch of grunting Neanderthals, but Charlie was the most hygienic, fragrant and well-dressed pop musician you could wish to meet. The others were more wacky but even Brian Jones, the prototype rock star, washed his hair twice a day and they were all perfectly nice to me, even signing a page of my notebook. I first met Charlie Watts, interviewing him and the rest of the band...

I’VE been banging on about Coldplay’s hotly anticipated new album for a while and couldn’t wait to see what they’d come up with as they officially unveiled Music Of The Spheres last night. No thanks! John Lydon was allegedly snubbed from being involved in the Sex Pistols drama as he was 'too difficult to work with,' according to the band's former muse Jordan Mooney In a new interview with The Sun, Jordan said that it's likely better for the series' producers that Johnny has not been involved. 2021 has become a year for Arsenal fans to forget. After crashing out of the Europa League against Villarreal, the Gunners now face a season without European football, following a dismal Premier League campaign in which mid-table obscurity seems inevitable. 18 The last time this happened to the North London giants was in 1995, in a similarly poor season where they finished 12th in the Premier League and lost in the European Cup Winners' Cup final to Real Zaragoza and THAT Nayim goal. It was a different world back then, with British music ruling the airwaves, Pierce Brosnan's first outing as James Bond, and Kate Moss proving to be the anti-thesis to the supermodels of the time. 1995 was also the start of a foreign revolution in the Premier League, with the likes of Dennis Bergkamp and Ruud Gullit arriving on our shores. 18Arsenal's flops crashed out of the Europa League and face a season without European footballCredit: Reuters BRITPOP In 1995, bands like Oasis, Pulp, Blur, Supergrass were regulars on Top of the Pops - and were the new...

The University of Texas at Austin band will be required to play "The Eyes of Texas," the school's alma mater, after the tune sparked a backlash from students and athletes. The Longhorn Band and the Longhorn Pep Band will both have a "required repertoire" of "traditional university selections," including "The Eyes of Texas," the college's Butler School of Music wrote Wednesday. The institution introduced a “to be named” group "that will not play the university alma mater or fight song." “We need to celebrate and nurture what makes UT special, and the Longhorn Band is one of those great organizations that shape our campus culture, elevate school spirit and provide amazing opportunities for our students,” University of Texas at Austin President Jay Hartzell, who approved the plan, said in a statement. “Our multi-million-dollar commitment over the next five years will support the Longhorn Band in restoring — and even going beyond — its former glory, while also providing strong support for our entire portfolio of university bands.” Football players at the school in March alleged that top brass...

This is the first time that the fast-food giant will highlight a celebrity's favorite order in more than one market. The promotion will start rolling out on May 26. McDonald's has been using its Famous Orders promotions to reintroduce consumers to its core menu items, like the Quarter Pounder burger, and to stay culturally relevant. The company kicked off the marketing strategy in September by teaming up with rapper Travis Scott. His order was so popular that it caused Quarter Pounder shortages for some McDonald's locations, and McDonald's executives told investors that the company hit multiple records across its social media accounts when the collaboration was announced. A follow-up deal with reggaeton singer J. Balvin also boosted sales. But McDonald's could surpass its prior success...

Like many an Angeleno, the city’s famed Hollywood Sign has undergone its share of cosmetic makeovers. In both 1976 and 2017, cannabis advocates amended the sign to read “Hollyweed” — and as recently as February, a group led by model Julia Rose rechristened the sign “Hollyboob” to promote breast cancer awareness. On the afternoon of Friday, April 2, a new posse of pranksters returned to accessorize the sign, this time by draping a painting of a cow across the first “O,” which stands 45 feet high by 33 feet wide. After the police pursued the perpetrators via helicopter, then on foot, three suspects were apprehended: visual artist Danny Cole, photographer Landon Yost and Greg Aram, the singer-songwriter behind the L.A. alt-rock band Junior Varsity. During its virtual analyst event today, T-Mobile outlined some bold plans for expanding its 5G coverage and speeding up its current offerings. The company says that by the end of 2023, it will cover 90 percent of Americans (about 300 million) with what it calls Ultra Capacity 5G (its faster mid-band and mmWave service). It also plans to cover 97 percent of Americans (approximately 320 million) by the end of 2022 with its slower low-band 5G, which it calls Extended Range. Currently, 125 million are covered by Ultra Capacity, with Extended Range covering 287 million. Additionally, those currently covered by Ultra Capacity 5G will see an increase in average speeds from 300Mbps up to 400Mbps, thanks to additional megahertz devoted to 5G, and T-Mobile says that more speed increases are on the way. This portion of T-Mobile’s 5G service is largely based on spectrum acquired from its Sprint merger, with mid-band frequencies well-suited to faster speeds and broad coverage. T-Mobile’s C-band acquisition figures into expansion plans starting in 2023. Already having access to...
Tony Iommi is one of the most influential rock musicians of all time, having been the primary architect behind the band Black Sabbath and, in turn, what would come to be known as heavy metal music in the early ‘70s. Untold legions of other musicians have been inspired by his deeply ominous, earth-rattling guitar riffs, which originated, at least in part, from a need to change his playing style after an injury as a teen left him without the tips of two fingers. Iommi’s much-imitated, never fully duplicated, signature sound is on full display on Rhino Records’ deluxe reissues of 1980’s “Heaven and Hell” and 1981’s “Mob Rules,” which were the first Sabbath record to feature Ronnie James Dio on the microphone after original vocalist Ozzy Osbourne had been booted from the band. Both offerings include newly remastered versions of the original landmark albums as well as plenty of bonus material, including some truly epic live cuts from the era. Each one is available as a 2-CD set ($19.98) and a 2-LP package ($31.98), as well as through the usual...
Aura Moreno Toluca / 04.03.2021 19:00:36 After overcoming breast cancer, Tonantzin Mejía Salazar discovered the challenges faced by those who live with this disease, for this reason she transformed her experience into learning and created the “Chichis pa la Banda” foundation to help those who go through this situation . “It started with a personal issue because I suffered from breast cancer; I realized that there was no association that would help you with prosthetics, nor that would give you free psychological therapy and that there are women who cannot buy a lymphedema sleeve or a medicine for 28 thousand pesos that lasts for a month, there are times when you run out of a peso ”. He pointed out that economic, physical, psychological and moral wear and tear is only part of what is experienced in the process, so he decided to start this project to help those who face this reality without resources or support. As part of the foundation’s activities, they raise funds to acquire and donate first and second stage external prostheses and to...

New York : In the 14 years since the band Jarana Beat has been founded, it has only produced two albums, “¡Echapalante!”, In 2011, and “Vibración por simpatia,” which was released earlier this month. The reason is very simple, as explained by the founder of this band formed in the South Bronx, Sinuhé Padilla-Isunza: “Our motivation was not the band’s career, but the sound of our community.” So much so, that this project took seven years to materialize, which were documented in a triple album. In them the passage by the band of 55 musicians and singers is recorded, most of them experts jaraneros and soneros of this popular rhythm from the Mexican state of Veracruz. This album, in addition to being a musical jewel, has the clear intention of being anthropological material because in its lyrics, all original, it carries a message of inclusion, tolerance and understanding. “Having a microphone is a privilege,” said the musician, who is also the group’s director. “I believe that artists have a responsibility to be the voice of a community […] Music...
There have been no surprises; Lithuania has re-elected the group The Roop, who would have been their representatives in the canceled 2020 contest, to represent the country in the next Eurovision Song Contest 2021. The Lithuanian band has managed to gather the maximum score of jury and public in the preselection ‘Pabandom Is Naujo!’ and they have assured, once again, their participation in the contest. The Roop will represent Lithuania at Eurovision 2021 For the success of what has finally been the theme chosen to represent Lithuania in Eurovision 2021, « Discoteque », the result has not surprised anyone. The song had already managed to reach the number one in sales nationwide and break stream records on Spotify, so a last minute surprise from one of the other five competitors who reached the final of the selection process was unlikely. The band has prevailed over the other 20 candidates that opted to represent the country this year in the contest. They have also achieved it breaking the historical public televoting record (calls and SMS messages), reaching 86.6% of the total...
