Mountain West:

latest news at page 1:
Less than a year after coach Blake Anderson and several players uprooted their lives and moved across the country to team up at Utah State, they triumphantly raised their new school's first Mountain West Conference trophy. Whether they're from Arkansas, Texas, northern Utah or points between, these Aggies are all champions. Brandon Bowling caught two touchdown passes from Logan Bonner during the decisive third quarter, and Utah State won the league title with a 46-13 rout of No. 19 San Diego State on Saturday. Bonner passed for 318 yards and four TDs, while fellow Arkansas State transfer Bowling had eight catches for a career-high 154 yards. The Aggies (10-3) punctuated their inspiring turnaround under their first-year head coach by blowing out the short-handed Aztecs (11-2) for their first win over an AP Top 25 opponent since 2015. Boise State (7-4, 5-2 Mountain West) at No. 22 San Diego State (10-1, 6-1, CFP No. 21), Friday at noon EST in Carson, Calif. (CBS). Line: Boise State by 2 ½, according to FanDuel Sportsbook. Series record: Tied 3-3. WHAT’S AT STAKE? This game has implications for the races in both the West and Mountain divisions. San Diego State has an easier road to the West title and a spot in the league championship game. It can clinch the title by beating the Broncos, or if Fresno State loses at San Jose State on Thursday. The Mountain Division is more complicated, with Air Force, Boise State and Utah State tied at 5-2. If the Aztecs win the West, they will host the title game Dec. 4 at their temporary home, Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, a Los Angeles suburb. KEY MATCHUP San Diego State punter/placekicker Matt Araiza against BSU. The junior from San Diego remains the Aztecs’ most potent threat after repeatedly forcing opponents into bad field position. Araiza, a finalist for the Ray Guy Award, leads FBS in...
There’s no point in denying that San Jose State failed to meet expectations in 2021. Coming off an unbeaten regular season to claim the program’s first Mountain West title, the Spartans fell flat multiple times this fall as the hype from an unprecedented campaign didn’t deliver a worthy encore performance. All is not lost, though. Thanksgiving Day is a chance for repentance at San Jose State (5-6, 3-4 Mountain West), which faces a must-win scenario to qualify for back-to-back bowl games for the first time in 35 years. Standing in the way is none other than rival Fresno State in the eighth rendition for the Battle of the Valley Trophy (Fresno State holds a 42-38-3 edge in the series history overall). “I don’t love where we’re at right now in terms of our record,” San Jose State coach Brent Brennan said. “I think that’s disappointing for everybody involved with Spartan football because we did have high expectations, so this game is huge for us.” Brennan, in his fifth season at the helm, could’ve left...
So much to be decided heading into this week's Thanksgiving college football feast. Let's sort it out, conference by conference. CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM Atlantic Coast Conference: No. 20 Pitt is locked into the conference championship game and will face No. 21 Wake Forest, No. 24 North Carolina State or Clemson. Wake is in with a win. N.C. State takes the Atlantic Division with a win and a Wake loss. If both lose, Clemson gets to the ACC championship for a seventh straight season. American Athletic Conference: No. 4 Cincinnati will play No. 19 Houston. Where the game will be played will be determined by whether the Bearcats win Friday at East Carolina. Big Ten: The winner of Michigan-Ohio State takes the East. Wisconsin takes the West with a victory and Iowa takes it if the Badgers lose and the Hawkeyes win. If both lose, that opens the door for Minnesota and also makes Purdue's result relevant, though the Boilermakers can't win the division. Big 12: Oklahoma State is in. If Oklahoma beats Oklahoma State, the...
(CNN)With hospitals throughout Colorado facing increases in Covid-19 hospitalizations, state officials announced that attendees of large public indoor events in certain jurisdictions must be vaccinated in order to help curb the virus' spread. Gatherings of more than 500 people in parts of metro Denver will require attendees to provide proof of vaccination, according to an amended public health order released Sunday, with exceptions provided to places of worship. Colorado is one of several Mountain West states hit hard by a coronavirus surge this fall, driven by the highly transmissible Delta variant as more than 150,000 Americans have died of Covid-19 since June. The state also reactivated its crisis standards of care last week for staffing of health care systems, allowing for greater flexibility for hospitals to shift personnel and resources to handle the latest wave of Covid-19 patients.Seven states -- all west of the Mississippi River -- have at least 30% of ICU beds filled with Covid-19 patients, according to Sunday data from the US Department of Health and Human Services. Montana leads the nation at around 44%, followed by...
Cargo thefts along the West Coast - home to the nation's largest ports - have jumped 42 percent since last year.  The correlation between the California ports' logjam and crime rise came was hardly a shock to crime and theft specialist Scott Cornell. 'The more that the supply chain in general is backed up, the more cargo you're going to have sitting and that creates a bigger opportunity for thefts,' crime and theft specialist at insurance company Travelers Scott Cornell, told CBS MoneyWatch.  More than $5million in consumer goods were stolen in California during the third-quarter of 2021, according to cargo theft recovery and prevention network CargoNet - another blow to the state's beleaguered ports.  The ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, which move about 40 percent of shipped cargo entering the U.S., are struggling with an unprecedented backlog that’s slowing the nation’s overall supply chain ahead of the holidays. There were 73 container ships at anchor Monday, and 29 container ships at berth. The backlog is exacerbated by thousands of empty shipping containers sitting on the ports, creating...
Fresno State (6-2, 3-1 MWC) at No. 21 San Diego State (7-0, 3-0), Saturday at 10:30 p.m. EDT (CBSSN). Line: SDSU by 1/2, according to FanDuel Sportsbook. Series record: SDSU leads 30-25-4. WHAT’S AT STAKE? No. 21 San Diego State heads into this huge MWC showdown looking to improve to 8-0 for the first time since 1975 and keep its lead over Fresno State in the West Division. The Aztecs are also looking to hang onto the Old Oil Can in this rivalry game. The Aztecs beat the Bulldogs 17-7 in the most recent meeting in 2019. KEY MATCHUP San Diego State’s defense vs. Fresno State’s offense. The Aztecs lead the conference and are seventh nationally in scoring defense at just 15.7 points per game. Fresno State’s offense is second in the MWC and 22nd nationally at 35.6 points per game. SDSU hasn’t allowed more than 24 points in regulation this season. Fresno State has scored 34 or more points five times this season, including 40 in a stunning upset at then-No. 13 UCLA on Sept. 18 and 63 against...
The stretch run for San Jose State will define how fans, boosters and those inside the program view the 2021 season. Sitting at .500 with four games left, the Spartans have experienced their fair share of ups and downs so far coming off last year’s magical Mountain West championship season. Back-to-back conference titles appear out of reach for the Spartans (4-4, 2-2 Mountain West) with No. 21 San Diego State (7-0, 3-0) still undefeated after surviving a double-overtime scare at CEFCU Stadium two weeks ago. San Jose State still has a chance to not only qualify for a bowl game, but to finish with a winning record in consecutive campaigns for the first time in 29 years. Saturday’s home game against Wyoming is the next challenge, and it only gets tougher after that with a trio of matchups against upper-echelon teams in the Mountain West – Nevada, Utah State and Fresno State. Two of those final three games — against the Aggies and a Thanksgiving date with the Bulldogs — are also at home. Meanwhile,...

Downing-USA TODAY Sports “We’re really just looking at the landscape and debating what expansion would mean for the Mountain West Conference,” MWC commissioner Craig Thompson told reporters Thursday, via the Fort Collins Coloradoan. “If it’s something that makes sense for us, we’ll look at that. But really, I’m defining it as we’re studying our options.” Thompson said MWC athletic directors have been meeting “twice a week for several months now” to discuss the possibility and that he spoke on Thursday to the presidents of two universities interested in joining the conference. Earlier in 2021, Oklahoma and Texas accepted invitations to join the SEC by 2025, although it's possible the pair of universities will do so sooner. The Big 12 responded to those impending departures by announcing that BYU, Central Florida, Cincinnati, and Houston will join...

San Jose State might need to readjust its long-term goals after the reigning Mountain West champion suffered a serious setback Saturday afternoon in Fort Collins, Colorado. A 32-14 loss at Colorado State not only leaves little room for error in a quest for back-to-back conference titles, but it also brings into question whether the Spartans (3-3, 1-1 Mountain West) will qualify for a bowl game. No. 25 San Diego State comes into town this upcoming Friday, which could leave San Jose State below .500 and in need of three wins over the final five games in order to participate in the postseason. With quarterback Nick Starkel still sidelined by an undisclosed upper-body injury, San Jose State backup Nick Nash was unable to rekindle the magic from last week’s 37-31 victory over New Mexico State. Nash turned it over twice, with an interception in the first quarter and a fumble with 7 minutes, 56 seconds left in the game. He finished 10-of-21 for 152 yards, with an 18-yard touchdown to tight end Derrick Deese Jr. late in...

San Jose State got a taste of its Mountain West title defense last month in Hawaii, but the conference schedule begins in earnest this weekend with a trip to Colorado State. The Spartans (3-2, 1-0 Mountain West) won’t face another nonconference foe the rest of the regular season after Saturday’s 37-31 victory at home against New Mexico State. As expected, the coach provided no update on the health status of quarterback Nick Starkel, who suffered an undisclosed upper-body injury two weeks ago at Western Michigan and missed Saturday’s win. Brennan, who doesn’t comment on injuries, did discuss his comfort level with backup Nick Nash, who rejoined the quarterback room last week after filling in as a wide receiver the previous two games. “I was comfortable going into the game knowing that Nick (Nash) was going to be the guy playing quarterback,” Brennan said. “Whenever he’s gone in and played for us, he has been effective at moving the football.” Nash’s next test will be the first of seven games in eight weeks against Mountain West...
SAN JOSE – Nick Nash made his first start as a college quarterback Saturday night and led San Jose State to a 37-31 victory over New Mexico State. It was the Spartans’ first home game in more than five weeks, since the Aug. 28 opener, and a crowd of 15,803 turned out. Nash, subbing for the injured Nick Starkel, passed for three touchdowns, completed 16 of 19 passes for 216 yards and played a turnover-free game. Nash was flawless in the first half, completing all eight of his passes for 134 yards and a pair of touchdowns as the Spartans (3-2, 1-0 Mountain West) headed into the locker room up 24-14. It helped that SJSU recorded its first interception of the season after cornerback Nehemiah Shelton jumped a pass to the slot receiver in the final minute of the first half. On the next snap, tight end Derrick Deese Jr. – who finished with seven catches for 130 yards – hauled in a 12-yard TD pass with 54 seconds left. Meanwhile, defensive lineman Cade Hall,...

SANTA CLARA COUNTY (BCN) – Santa Clara County’s Vector Control District will conduct mosquito control treatment in parts of Palo Alto and Mountain View on Friday after detecting the West Nile virus in mosquitos in those areas. The Vector Control District announced the positive mosquito cases and the treatment plans on Wednesday. Affected areas include neighborhoods near West Middlefield Road and San Antonio Road, in parts of ZIP codes 94043, 94303 and 94306. The mosquito control treatment begins around 10 p.m. Friday and will last about three hours. Those who want to be extra cautious can stay inside and close windows and doors. The treatment involves a low-volume insecticide that has been approved by the federal and state Environmental Protection Agencies widely used by vector control agencies throughout California. This is not the first time this year the West Nile virus has...
LOGAN, W.Va. (AP) — When a mine industry conflict a hundred years ago sparked the largest armed uprising in the United States since the Civil War, The Associated Press was there, sending multiple bulletins each day to update the nation’s newspapers on each development. Thousands of coal miners had marched to unionize, fed up with poor wages and living conditions and angered by killings of their supporters. Defying martial law, they gathered weapons and were met on Blair Mountain by forces mustered by the anti-union Logan County sheriff. At least 16 men died in the 12-day battle, which included planes dropping bombs on the miners’ camps. They finally surrendered to federal troops sent by President Warren G. Harding on Sept. 3, 1921. Another dozen years would pass before workers were guaranteed the right to collectively bargain in 1933 as part of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal. West Virginia coal miners then joined the United Mine Workers by the thousands. As descendants of those miners march this Labor Day weekend to remember the sacrifices that enabled...
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — Fed up with poor wages, work and living conditions, thousands of coal miners a century ago marched in an effort to unionize in West Virginia, resulting in a deadly clash and the largest U.S. armed uprising since the Civil War. On Friday, some descendants of those involved will join others in retracing the steps that culminated in the 12-day Battle of Blair Mountain. The miners — whites, Blacks, and European immigrants — banded together, bent on doing something about their treatment by coal operators. They became known as the “Red Neck Army” for the distinctive bandanas they wore around their necks. At least 16 men died before the miners surrendered to federal troops in September 1921. Bloody conflicts in the mining industry in the early 20th century, known as the West Virginia Mine Wars, have been overlooked in public schools. But recently Blair Mountain has received much greater attention in the public. In 2018, the Blair Mountain Battlefield was restored to the National Register of Historic Places, protecting the site from coal...
Marie Tuite, the former San Jose State athletic director whose handling of sex abuse allegations led to her reassignment in May, has left the school. Tuite, 67, announced her departure in an email Friday to some athletic department staff members. The school has made no announcement. “Now, after all the unique challenges and circumstances presented during this past year, it is an ideal opportunity for me to close one chapter in my career and turn my time and energies to exploring future opportunities. Accordingly, I am resigning from my current position with the University effective today,” she wrote. One of 12 women athletic directors in the country, Tuite presided over the most successful football season in 80 years at San Jose State. Her decision to extend the contract of coach Brent Brennan after a three-year record of 8-29 paid dividends in 2020 when the Spartans went 7-0 and won the Mountain West championship. Despite losing its bowl game, SJSU was ranked 24th in the final Associated Press poll. Marie Tuite joined the on-field celebration when SJSU won...
Following the kickoff of the 2021-22 college football season, two San Jose State seniors have been awarded Player of the Week honors by the Mountain West Conference, it was announced Monday. Spartans quarterback Nick Starkel was named the Mountain West Offensive Player of the Week, and punter Will Hart was tabbed as the Special Teams Player of the Week. Starkel completed 16 passes for 394 yards and four touchdowns in three quarters during San Jose State’s 45-14 win over Southern Utah. He rushed for a fifth touchdown on a one-yard run for the first score of the game. Starkel, who transferred from Arkansas in 2020, led touchdown drives of 80, 79, 66, 70 and 65 yards on San Jose State’s first five possessions. To earn Special Teams Player of the Week, Hart averaged 40 yards on two punts. Both pinned Southern Utah near their own goal line. The first was fair caught at the 11-yard line and the second was caught at the 7-yard line. While this is a strong start for the Spartans (1-0) after...

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Andy Avalos is back on the blue turf at Boise State, this time as coach of a Broncos team that is primed to regain what it considers its rightful spot at the top of the Mountain West Conference. The Broncos are the overwhelming pick to win the Mountain Division and have their sights set beyond that after making four straight appearances in the conference championship game, including a loss to the surprise team of 2020, San Jose State. Avalos, a fan favorite as an all-conference linebacker at Boise State in the early 2000s, was hired away from his job as Oregon’s defensive coordinator after Bryan Harsin became Auburn’s head coach. After his playing days, Avalos served on the staffs of BSU coaches Dirk Koetter and Dan Hawkins, including as defensive coordinator. Avalos understands the responsibility he’s taken on at his alma mater. “We’ve been very blessed to have the opportunity to help the program grow in certain areas,” he said. Avalos will welcome back 19 returning starters, nine on offense and eight on defense, from a...

What goes up, must come down. Will that be the case at San Jose State after climbing to the peak of the Mountain West Conference for the first time in program history? Sustainability for success isn’t a recent staple for the Spartans, who’ve failed to enjoy consecutive winning seasons for nearly three decades. But after going undefeated a year ago in a truncated COVID-19 regular season and besting Boise State for the first time in 15 tries to claim the Mountain West title, there’s a growing sense of optimism that San Jose State is trending upward in advance of Saturday night’s season opener at home. “The nation took notice, obviously,” said Jesse Kurtz, lead anchor of the Mountain West Network. “And then the broadcast networks this year. Look no further than the games that were picked up for television for San Jose State. … They’re putting a product out there that people want to see.” Brent Brennan, the 2020 Lombardi Foundation College Football Coach of the Year, enters his fifth year at the helm with...

Boise State, entering its first year under Andy Avalos after Bryan Harsin’s departure for Auburn, has definitely been the league’s premier program since it joined back in 2011, but has maybe not been quite as dominant as perceived. In those 10 seasons, the Broncos have three outright conference titles, with one shared title back in 2012. But San Diego State and Fresno State have also won it twice outright, in addition to both sharing it with Boise in 2012. Entering 2021, there are a lot of intriguing teams in the Mountain West. That includes defending champion San Jose State. There will also be a lot of attention on Nevada, a team with a potential first-round QB in Carson Strong. (All odds via BetMGM.) San Jose State senior defensive lineman Cade Hall was voted Mountain West preseason defensive player of the year and three other Spartans appeared alongside him in the all-conference media poll’s first team entering the 2021 season. The accolades continue to roll in for Hall, an All-American last season and the Mountain West’s defensive player of the year. The three-year starter — and product of San Jose’s Bellarmine Prep — was named last week to the preseason watch list for the Chuck Bednarik Award, which honors the top defensive player nationally. Fellow defensive lineman Viliami Fehoko, a junior, joined Hall on the preseason all-conference team, as well as junior defensive back Tre Jenkins and senior offensive lineman Jack Snyder. Hall, Fehoko and Snyder all earned first-team all-Mountain West honors following last season, in which the Spartans went undefeated in regular-season play and captured their first Mountain West crown. LAS VEGAS (AP) — Nevada coach Jay Norvell remembers being overcome by heartbreak last season on senior night, when each honored player was introduced with nobody but teammates, opponents and game officials to hear their names. “I think (that was) one of the most disappointing things from last year, having no family or fans in the stands,” Norvell said. “That was really hard. But I’m very grateful that we get this season. and that many of those kids can play this year and have another opportunity for their senior year.” The return of fans and in-person meetings were an overwhelmingly hot topic Wednesday as Mountain West coaches kicked off the conference’s media days looking ahead to a more typical 2021 season after a pandemic-plagued 2020 campaign. “I couldn’t be more fired up for this city, our school, stadium,” UNLV coach Marcus Arroyo said. “To have fans come in that stadium to see us, to have our guys come out to fans and their families — man we’re fired up.” Norvell’s Wolf Pack was chosen to win the conference’s West Division,...

New Mexico Over 4.5: There was not a team last season I was more impressed with than New Mexico. The Lobos were forced to play home games in Las Vegas at Sam Boyd Stadium while regularly holding practices in hotel ballrooms as opposed to the usual facilities. Even so, Danny Gonzales led New Mexico to two wins and four covers in seven games in his first season as coach. They took games from Wyoming and Fresno State as 18- and 12-point underdogs in the final two games of the season, showing real improvement as the campaign went on. This year, the Lobos bring back 17 starters, as well as key transfers such as Terry Wilson from Kentucky....

Tucker Carlson tried to claim that liberals are fleeing big states to move to the Mountain West, when the reality is that right-wing white flight from urban areas has transformed those states politically. Tucker Carlson has become a relentless promoter of his twisted-bowtie version of the white nationalist “replacement theory” of immigration—namely, that Democrats are deliberately opening the national gates to a floodtide of brown immigrants whose primary purpose is to displace and dispossess Republican white voters. With the nodding approval of Fox News executives, Carlson has been repeating the theory, doubling down and characterizing immigration itself as “the most radical possible attack on the core premise of democracy.” If you pay close attention to these rants, a pattern emerges: Carlson bloviates a lot of important-sounding words, but he almost never actually illustrates his claims with any evidence supporting them. When he actually does so, a little careful examination reveals the evidence actually to be not just ephemera, but classic right-wing up-is-down inversion of reality on its head, revealing his argument for the bad-faith charade in which he specializes. No. 21 Missouri State pulled out of the Missouri Valley Conference tournament on Saturday after a positive COVID-19 test was found in Bradley’s program the night before. The two teams were scheduled to meet in the semifinals, but the Lady Bears decided to opt out and head home just before tip-off, not risking the chance of potentially getting infected. They are expected to make the NCAA Tournament when the field is announced Monday. The conference had a specific set of rules it came up with before the tournament began about what would happen if a team were to opt out or be unable to play because of positive COVID-19 tests. “We had policy guidelines on tournament re-seeding by the athletic administrators,” Missouri Valley Conference Commissioner Doug Elgin said in a phone interview Saturday. “After Friday’s game if one team is unavailable the highest remaining seed advances, and we reshuffled the deck.” Drake, which was the No. 2 seed, was given a bye to the finals and will play the winner of the Bradley-Loyola, Chicago game on Sunday. The Bulldogs...

(CBS Local)- The Mountain West Conference tournament returns to CBS Sports Network and CBS this weekend as teams fight for the right to cut down the nets in Las Vegas, Nevada and earn the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. San Diego State enters as the number one seed, looking to win the tournament for the first time since 2018. The Aztecs are, as usual, a pain on defense, holding opponents to just 60.1 points per game and 32.5% shooting from beyond the arc. Brian Dutcher’s squad runs 10 deep with players getting at least 12 minutes per game. It allows players to remain fresh throughout playing a higher level of intensity that really frustrates opponents.
