Two teenagers are thought to have been in the car that fatally struck a Fresno State student in a hit-and-run Saturday in Fresno, the California Highway Patrol said. Devan Nicole Elayda, 23, who is from Hollister, was killed after she pulled onto the shoulder next to the median of Highway 180 and got out of her Scion TC around 2:50 a.m. Saturday. CHP officers say she was switching seats so that her passenger could drive. As Elayda stepped around to the passenger side of the car, she was struck by a Lexus sedan in the eastbound fast lane. The driver of the Lexus left the scene. The CHP did not release the names of the two people believed to have been in the Lexus, described as a 16-year-old boy and a 17-year-old girl. The agency said they were identified as persons of interest after a family member contacted the CHP. It is not known which of them is thought to have been driving, and neither had been arrested as of Tuesday. The Lexus was impounded, the CHP said. A...
Washington is in talks with Fresno State’s Kalen DeBoer to be its next head coach, two people familiar with the discussions between the Bulldogs’ coach and the Pac-12 school told AP on Monday. The people spoke on condition of anonymity because a deal between Washington and the 47-year-old DeBoer was not complete, though he was scheduled to meet with school officials in Fresno, California, on Monday. On3 Sports first reported Washington was targeting DeBoer to be its next coach. DeBoer has spent two season at Fresno State, going 12-6. He previously worked under Jeff Tedford at Fresno State during the 2017 and 2018 seasons as offensive coordinator. He left to take the offensive coordinator job at Indiana for the 2019 season before returning to Fresno State in 2020 after Tedford stepped down for health reasons. His history with Tedford likely played in DeBoer’s favor with Washington. Tedford has a tight friendship with former Washington coach Chris Petersen, who has served as an adviser for athletic director Jen Cohen since he stepped down after the 2019 season. Tedford also worked...

SAN JOSE – The Battle for the Valley Trophy wasn’t much of a contest as San Jose State tasted defeat one final time on Thanksgiving Day, 40-9, against rival Fresno State. The Spartans (5-7, 3-5 Mountain West) failed to qualify for a bowl game in the regular-season finale after a second-consecutive rout at CEFCU Stadium in front of 15,323 fans. Last year’s Mountain West title and perfect regular season must seem like a mirage after San Jose State finished with an identical record to its pre-pandemic 2019 campaign. The Spartans trailed 23-9 at intermission after settling for field goals by Matt Mercurio during three trips into the red zone and never established any momentum on offense. San Jose State QB Nick Starkel – 19-of-42 for 260 yards – and his likely successor Nick Nash each lost fumbles in the first half as turnovers plagued the team to the end. There’s no point in denying that San Jose State failed to meet expectations in 2021. Coming off an unbeaten regular season to claim the program’s first Mountain West title, the Spartans fell flat multiple times this fall as the hype from an unprecedented campaign didn’t deliver a worthy encore performance. All is not lost, though. Thanksgiving Day is a chance for repentance at San Jose State (5-6, 3-4 Mountain West), which faces a must-win scenario to qualify for back-to-back bowl games for the first time in 35 years. Standing in the way is none other than rival Fresno State in the eighth rendition for the Battle of the Valley Trophy (Fresno State holds a 42-38-3 edge in the series history overall). “I don’t love where we’re at right now in terms of our record,” San Jose State coach Brent Brennan said. “I think that’s disappointing for everybody involved with Spartan football because we did have high expectations, so this game is huge for us.” Brennan, in his fifth season at the helm, could’ve left...

San Jose State has a lot on its plate Thanksgiving Day at CEFCU Stadium. Not only is the Battle of the Valley Trophy up for grabs for an eighth time, but the Spartans (5-6, 3-4 Mountain West) find themselves in desperate need of a victory in the regular-season finale against rival Fresno State to become bowl eligible. “It’s kind of like a playoff game,” SJSU left tackle Jack Snyder said. “If we win, we get to keep playing, so it’s kind of like all the cards are on the table.” The problem is the Bulldogs (8-3, 5-2) also don’t lack for motivation, considering a victory will secure the Mountain Division title and a spot in the conference championship game – as long as Boise State defeats No. 22 San Diego State on Friday. The Spartans, who closed out their 2019 campaign with a win over the Bulldogs, look forward to the challenge after last year’s matchup was canceled due to COVID-19 complications. “It’s Thanksgiving, we’re on national TV, we’re playing a meaningful game in November,...

A popcorn vendor was filmed selling her wares as a huge brawl erupted at a college football game.  The woman was seen offering treats as three different fights erupted at the Bulldog Stadium in Fresno, California, on Saturday as Fresno State and Boise State battled it out on the field. Boise ended up winning the game 40-14 - but the action in the stands was arguably even more enthralling than the sporting drama, with clips of the violent tiff since shared widely on social media.     Five fans were arrested in Fresno State's 40-14 loss to Boise State that was played before a sellout crowd at Bulldog Stadium. It is unclear what started the fight, although cops say alcohol was a factor, and one eyewitness claimed that an exchange of insults ended up spiraling into physical violence.   So here’s video of what happened just prior to the incident I described below. FRESNO, Calif. Boise State (5-4, 3-2) dominated in the rematch of the 2018 Mountain West championship game. Jake Haener passed for 279 yards and two touchdowns for Fresno State, but threw three interceptions — one in the end zone. FRESNO, Calif. (AP) — Coach Kalen DeBoer doesn’t think he’ll have much trouble keeping his team’s focus off being newly ranked this week. The No. 25 Bulldogs face long-time rival Boise State on Saturday for the first time since 2018, when the two teams met for the Mountain West championship for the third time in five seasons. The game has already been announced as a sellout, Fresno State’s first at home in seven years. “(The ranking) doesn’t really mean nothing if we don’t take care of business this Saturday,” DeBoer said. “If you look at their losses they’re very close losses and they have beat good teams, very good teams. We already know that you throw the records out the door for this game no matter what. Second of all, if you do the math they’re still right there in the hunt on their half of the conference.
